MENS GOLF Last weekend (24/25 November), 15 members and 3 visitors journeyed to the Blue Mountains for our sections annual away weekend. This weekend is now part of our golfing calendar and is organised by our Vice President Craig Tomkins. On Friday morning with a 10.30am start, a warm up game was held at Wentworth Falls Golf Club for those that could attend. Members and visitors then enjoyed dinner at The Blackheath Golf Club on Friday night where pairings for the main game on Saturday were announced. On Saturday morning members and visitors enjoyed a gourmet buffet breakfast at Redleaf Resort, joined by three members who drove up early that morning. Members and visitors then began to hitoff from the 1st tee at 8.00am. This game is the main game on the weekend, an individual Stableford event, and results count towards various trophies played for each year. In addition a 2BBB and secret 6 holes were also held. Results for the Individual Stableford event were: 1st Neville Catterall 39 points cb 2nd Dennis Chiddy 39 3rd Bernie Love 38 cb from Clay Forbes and Bruce Miller. NP Dennis Chiddy, Chris Tomkins (2), Steve Sydenham, Neville Catterall and Visitor EN Peter Newland, Neville Catterall and Visitor LD Rob Millynn, Chris Tomkins To fill in the afternoon, members and visitors participated in a nine hole Ambrose event won by John Matthews/Peter Newland/Dennis Chiddy/Ian Ross (visitor). Saturday night saw everyone attend an Appreciation Dinner at Blackheath Golf Club. There were quite a few prizes to be presented and thanks go to Nev Catterall, Bernie Love, John Matthews, Peter Leigh, Chris Tomkins and the Golf Section for donation of trophies for the day. Sunday morning saw members and visitors enjoy another gourmet breakfast at the Redleaf Resort before travelling to Wentworth Falls Golf Club for another game of golf. Overall a most enjoyable weekend with the section’s traditional comradeship evident. Special thanks to Vice President Craig Tomkins for organizing a busy weekend. CAPTAIN/PRESIDENTS GOLF DAY Our end of year golf event will be played on Sunday 9 December at Mona Vale Golf Course. On the completion of their rounds, members will return to the RSL for our end of year barbeque lunch followed by our annual trophy presentations and Annual General Meeting. Our first game in 2013 will be at Warringah on Sunday 20th January. That’s it for now SPORTS COUNCIL Weatherman Willy Just a reminder that the next Sports Council meeting will be held on Monday 10 th December in the View Room commencing at 6pm. Bill Law Chairman TRAVEL 65 members attended the Christmas dinner on Sunday and what a super day it was. Everyone was there early to catch up on all the news before the dinner was served. What a delightful dinner it was too. There was rib eye beef served on a bed of mashed sweet potato with asparagus and snow peas or chicken breast with wing bone attached served with asparagus whole new carrot, snow peas and baby chat potatoes. The desert was berry meringue roll with a berry coulis or Christmas pudding with lashings of custard. Wine and beer also went down a treat .Thanks go to the chefs for a wonderful meal and also to Kim who helped with the organising, setting the tables for us and not complaining when we were there at the same time to add our bob bons (christmas crackers to the poms) and bits and bobs. As usual Santa paid us a visit and gave everyone a chocolate. It was a very hot day so he must have been really hot in his outfit. Bob Connors made us all laugh with his jokes, a page full. Thanks go to all the members who attended for without them there would be no special Christmas
celebration Thanks also go to all the committee for all their hard work and making it a success once more and special thanks to Pam Estherby who helped on the day. The Traveller VETERAN’S GOLF It is great to have so many players turn up each Friday – 47 again last Friday for the Monthly Medal Game. Col Coupland was the winner (26) 58 and playoff for the year is being held this Friday 30. Our thoughts and best wishes to Nick Trahair, who was admitted to hospital with a ruptured appendix and also to John Waite who has had an operation on a shoulder – no doubt he will be back on the firways driving the ball 300 plus metres AND telling us this weeks starters are Tony Betts and Col Coupland. We had two visitors play with us. Visitors are always welcome – Adam Watt and Graeme Mahn. The committee has decided that the game on December 7 will be an Ambrose event. Don’t forget our Annual Dinner and Presentation Night is on Friday 14 December. Bookings and payments will be gladly accepted by Bill Shields. WALKERS WOLLI CREEK to KYEEMAGH – Mon 19 th Nov. Although the weather was overcast and we had a few spots of rain earlier, 31 walkers met at Wynyard Station for a trip to Turrella. This was a walk through the Wolli Creek and Cooks River valleys which included lovely bush tracks and paths through reserves. Some people thought that the walk was over before it began as the footbridge across Wolli Creek at Turrella was closed for repairs. After a few hesitant moments we managed to get everyone across the creek via stepping stones. The path took us across open parkland to bush tracks that at one point ran in front of a row of old stone cottages on the fringes of Undercliff. Here we met a local resident who gave us a history of the valley, the cottages and the fight against valley development. We continued along more bush tracks before arriving at Gough Whitlam Park for morning tea. We crossed the Cooks River at Tempe Station before continuing on to the busy Princess Highway. It was a relief to get away from the traffic noise when going across Cahill Park near Sydney Airport. The path continued through the Rockdale Wetlands at one stage passing under the busy M5 motorway. Next we were walking beside large Chinese Market Gardens, their existence was amazing as they were so close to Sydney Airport and they had managed to escape the clutches of greedy developers. We had lunch at the boat ramp next to where the Cooks River empties out into Botany Bay. Refreshed we continued on to Brighton-Le-Sands along the Botany Bay waterfront. Here we caught the bus along Bay Street to the train home from Rockdale Station ending a great day’s walk. PEDRO DIARY NOTES ECHO POINT ROSEVILLE CHASE - PICNIC/BBQ – Wed 5 th Dec.
