ANGLING & BOATING
On Sunday we enjoyed a day out. There were 20 of us in a mini bus travelling to the Southern Highlands
with Bob Connors driving. We stopped for morning tea in a park at Mittagong. The tulips and pansies were
in full bloom. Here we enjoyed beverages and Diane Connors delicious cakes. Then we drove to Berrima
where we came across a school fete. It was great and we all bought something.
Lunch was at Mittagong R.S.L. and here we were served at the tables roast or fish and chips
and pavlova or apple crumble. We also enjoyed a beer .So all in the bus again travelling
back to Bowral’s Corbett park to see the tulip display. The trees were just as admiral as
the flower beds. Rain sent us scurrying back to the bus again and we were homeward
bound.
Angling and Boating coming event for fishing is on Saturday the 29th October.
4 DAY GETAWAY TO QUEANBEYAN AND CANBERRA - 14 – 17 Oct. 2011. This was a great getaway
enjoyed by 40 members. We were so lucky with fine weather, good company, food, accommodation,
transport, bowls and friendships.
We arrived at Parliament House where we met up with our flyers, Margaret & Kerry Cliff and Vicki & Dick
Adamson. Lunch was delicious, held in the very nice Members & Guests Dining Room followed by a
guided tour of the “House”.
Saturday off to Queanbeyan RSL Memorial Club for a morning of bowls and lunch, then an
afternoon cruise on Lake Burley Griffen. Our very obliging “Coach Captain” transported us
to the steps of Old Parliament House for our official photo and the presentation of the
Wings to our flyers.
Sunday another clear day and we were welcomed by Yowani Travelling Bowlers for a fun morning of bowls
followed again by a delicious lunch. Many of us won prizes (scratchies) in the “spider” with our gold coin
donations to The Shepherd Foundation. There were some wins and some losses in both our games. One
of our ladies got quite a boost when she realised her “sports drink” was her brandy supply for pre-dinner
drinks that night. Caused quite a lot of laughs on the rink though. After lunch we proceeded to the
Australian Institute of Sport for a very good guided tour. Unfortunately we saw no budding Olympians
training as it was their “day of rest”.
On our way home we stopped at Bungendore for a coffee and browse in the shops there. At Goulburn we
picked up a tour guide from the Information Centre who expertly explained different historical sites in
Goulburn and a tour of the Returned Soldiers Memorial high on the hill outside Goulburn. A very nice lunch
at Diggers by the Park Soldiers Club.
We really appreciated the welcome given to us by the Queanbeyan and Canberra Bowling Clubs. Also a
big thank you to our coach driver, and our hard working committee for bringing this trip together; and to
you, our members and friends, for making this another fun- fabulous getaway.
On a more subdued note, we had eight who had to cancel because of illness and our thoughts were with
you and any others on the sick list.
Our last event for 2011 will be the Christmas Bowls Day on 20 th November. The list is now up in the
men’s locker room – more details next week.
Lo Flyer
As reported last week, that I would give you the progress scores for the FAT, here they are – with only one
round to go there are only three remaining members who can win it.
They are – Joan MacDonald 13 pts, Jan Carty 14 pts, and Brian Chaffer, also on 4 pts. Good luck to the
three of you.
Tonight’s game will be an “Open” event and our little “Treasure” John will be running the games
as Doug and Martha Bain are “cruizin” for 2 weeks, George and Margaret North are “surfin” in
Hawaii for 2 weeks (can’t wait to see the photo’s of them in their grass hula skirts), and Kerry
and Brian will not be in attendance. (You can handle it John).
Carol Taylor had her name called out again last Thursday night. Good luck Carol in the big draw in
December. Don’t forget I’m on 10%. (That’s all the gossip).
Last Thursday night we had 18 starters. (very good). In the first round we had 2 max’s of 6 shots (very
rare), also a dead heat for 1st with Jo Yen, G North, Daisy NG, tying with J Taylor and D Sorbara on 12
shots each. The runner’s up were Tom NG, June Carswell and Margaret North. In the second game John
White (Little Treasure), Rita Lee and Margaret North were the winners, and the runner’s up were George
North and Deirdre Sorbara. Welcome home to our Flying Bowler’s members who just had four day’s in the
nation’s capital. I was told they had a great time.
That’s all the results and gossip for the week, so, until next week, enjoy the warm weather, and – I’ll see ya.
For better or for worse, you have me back after 7 weeks for a variety of reasons. Unfortunately I do not
WALKERS REPORT
“Bogey Man”
ENGADINE TO WORONORA – Fri 7 th Oct. The Walkers Group took part in a most enjoyable walk from
Engadine to Woronora. Fourteen members met at Town Hall station & travelled by train to Engadine where
we alighted at about 9.45 am & commenced our walk. We traversed several streets until we arrived at
Dobell Road Reserve. Here we had morning tea before continuing on to the main part of the walk.
We followed a good track, mainly a fire trail, located close to Loftus Creek which flows along a fairly deep
gully west of the Princes Highway. On both sides of the gully was typical Australian bushland
which included many tall Gymea Lilies in various stages of flowering. We walked generally in
a northerly direction and encountered several creek crossings which required some careful
stepping because of the amount of water flowing through. Along part of the way we followed a
large water supply pipeline which supplies parts of Sydney from the southern dams
(Woronora, Cordeaux, Cataract etc).
We eventually reached Woronora at about noon and had lunch on the southern bank of the Woronora River
in Princes Park. The walk was about 7 km in length, the weather was very kind to us and the temperature
was just right. After lunch we caught the bus back to Sutherland station for the train back to the City.
WOMEN'S BOWLS
Thursday 13th October - Mixed Mufti
Seventeen players enjoyed a lovely day for bowls. Today's winning rink was Bob Butler, Kevin Nicey,
Bruce Robinson & Ann Nicey and the runners-up (from the same lucky rink) were Bob Butler, Caryl Flint,
Gen Robinson & Fay Butler. Kay King won the raffle.
Tuesday 18th October - T.J. Andrews Day & Minor Singles Semi Final
Thirty seven players enjoyed a gorgeous sunny day for bowls. President Ann welcomed Pat Pierson, a
visitor from East Roseville, who is very well known to most of our ladies through Flying Bowlers and interclub
competitions and Ann also welcomed back Ilva Hopwood for her first game back with us after a long
absence.
After lunch T.J. Andrews representative Mark Franklin presented the victorious teams and 13 lucky raffle
winners with their prizes. The winning rink was Jeanette King, Norma Craighill & June Reed and we had 2
runners up rinks which were Jan Donnelly, Jan Carty & Ilva Hopwood and Lois Foster & Ella Winner. The
winner of our lucky lunch was Tanya Carey and Caryl Flint won the Club raffle.
Minor Singles Semi Final Result - Tanya Carey def. Lois Foster 31-30 in a match which went for 40 ends
(that's a lot of bowls!). Unbelievably this is the same score as last week's semi final
Tanya had the upperhand for the first half of the match then Lois fought back strongly to lead 30-24. It was
then Tanya's turn to fight as Lois remained on 30 for the final 6 ends. It is often said at the conclusion of
such a close match that it is a shame someone has to lose but in this match even the spectators felt the
intense tension of the situation between these two very popular ladies. Congratulations to both Tanya and
Lois on playing such an exciting and very high standard match which was played in fantastic spirit. Thank
you to Ella Winner for marking the match.
Tanya now meets Margaret Cliff in the final which will be played next Tuesday. Good luck to both ladies.
