ANGLING & BOATING
Saturday 24 November was our last outside trip for 2012.
It turned out to be a Treasure Hunt, there were five Charter boats all moving about trying to find fish. Our catch
was light on 23 fish, 14kg. Bob Minshall winner on day.
It was an enjoyable day, weather perfect, lots of small boats out plus the Voyager of the Sea in the harbour.
We were passed by the Voderdam on her outward voyage. The day finished off with a picnic at Mosman.
I thank all who fished this year and wish you a Merry Christmas and prosperous New Year.
Still on our Calendar. Sunday 9 December – Annual Picnic at Roseville River, 11am – all
welcome. AGM Thursday, February 21.
DANCE & SOCIAL
Our last Wednesday Night Dance for 2012 was very well represented by lots and lots of Christmas colours and
music to match. MC for the night was our Clive “of India” Nagel and he did a great job.
Prizes –
Barn Dance: Geoffrey Gilchrist, Judy Vidler, Clive Nagel & Pam Piper
“Pass the Parcel”: Trevor Watson & Gaye Condon
Pass the Parcel always goes well – lots and lots of laughter as people get caught with the
parcels. We “oldies” have never moved more quickly than in passing the six parcels around a
group of sixty or so dancers, especially as those caught get eliminated and the parcels arrive
more quickly.
Monte Carlo: Noel Shaw & Jan Gilchrist
Lucky Door: Sandra O’Nion & Denis Lee
We are all looking forward to our Dinner Dance to be held on Saturday 8 December. There are
94 already booked to come so another good night is anticipated.
We hope everybody has a safe and enjoyable Christmas.
FLYING BOWLERS
You will all be pleased to know that John & I delivered the wonderful array of toys donated by
the members of the Flying Bowlers to the Salvation Army at Dee Why yesterday. Claire
(at the Salvation Army) was openly delighted with this wonderful donation and told us
that she had been advised that the Manly district need 5000 gifts this year to bring a little
happiness to all the needy in this area. A special ‘thank you’ to Shirley Ellis who, even
though she was unable play on the day, especially brought a toy for inclusion along to
Twilight bowls last Friday. Thank you everyone for your generosity.
There are no functions for the Flying Bowlers during December but suddenly we will be into 2013 when our next
occasion is New Years Bowls Day – 20 January 2013. More details later.
Our February get-together is our Life Members’ and Patrons’ Day on 17 February and our Annual General
Meeting will follow lunch on that day so be prepared for a longer day out.
Our thoughts go out to the various members struggling with aches and pains at the present time and hope that
everyone improves as we participate in the Festive Season.
Wine and beer also went down a treat .Thanks go to the chefs for a wonderful meal and also to Kim who
helped with the organising, setting the tables for us and not complaining when we were there at the same time
to add our bob bons (christmas crackers to the poms) and bits and bobs.
As usual Santa paid us a visit and gave everyone a chocolate. It was a very hot day so he must
have been really hot in his outfit. Bob Connors made us all laugh with his jokes, a page full.
celebration Thanks also go to all the committee for all their hard work and making it a success once more and
special thanks to Pam Estherby who helped on the day.
WALKERS
WOLLI CREEK to KYEEMAGH – Mon 19 th Nov. Although the weather was overcast and we had a few spots
of rain earlier, 31 walkers met at Wynyard Station for a trip to Turrella. This was a walk through the Wolli Creek
and Cooks River valleys which included lovely bush tracks and paths through reserves.
Some people thought that the walk was over before it began as the footbridge across Wolli Creek at Turrella was
closed for repairs.
After a few hesitant moments we managed to get everyone across the creek via stepping stones. The path
took us across open parkland to bush tracks that at one point ran in front of a row of old stone cottages on the
fringes of Undercliff. Here we met a local resident who gave us a history of the valley, the cottages and the fight
against valley development. We continued along more bush tracks before arriving at Gough Whitlam Park for
morning tea. We crossed the Cooks River at Tempe Station before continuing on to the busy Princess
Highway. It was a relief to get away from the traffic noise when going across Cahill Park near Sydney Airport.
The path continued through the Rockdale Wetlands at one stage passing under the busy M5
motorway. Next we were walking beside large Chinese Market Gardens, their existence was
amazing as they were so close to Sydney Airport and they had managed to escape the clutches of
greedy developers.
We had lunch at the boat ramp next to where the Cooks River empties out into Botany Bay.
Refreshed we continued on to Brighton-Le-Sands along the Botany Bay waterfront. Here we
caught the bus along Bay Street to the train home from Rockdale Station ending a great day’s
walk.
