PLANNING WISELY - CONSERVING WATER 

Water is a limited resource everywhere. Though the eastern half of the 

United States typically receives enough (or sometimes too much) there 

are dry areas that sometimes do not receive enough rain for the demand. 

Most low-elevation areas of the western United States have low rainfall 

rates and a long dry season and though the overall western water supply 

remains virtually fixed, ever more people are putting demands on it. 

Thus, conserving water is (or should be) a concern everywhere. Here are 

a few tips for waterwise gardening. 

LOCATE PLANTS CAREFULLY 

Group plants with similar water needs together. They can then be 

irrigated together and no plant will receive too much or too little water. 

This concept is called hydro zoning. To cut water use on plants that need 

regular moisture, site the “thirsty” individuals in a spot shielded from 

drying summer winds. 

MULCH YOUR PLANTINGS 

An organic mulch spread several inches thick over the soil acts as an 

insulating blanket, slowing evaporation from the soil and keeping it cooler 

than it would be if unprotected. Rocks and gravel also do the job. Black 

plastic sheeting, sold in rolls, conserves moisture and suppresses weeds. 

You can also buy rolls of various plastic materials known collectively as 

landscape fabrics. Permeable to water and air, these are manufactured 

expressly for use as a mulch. 

ELIMINATE RUNOFF 

Don’t waste water by irrigating paved surfaces. If your sprinkler system 

showers water over sidewalks, patios or driveways, replace the heads with 

a model that delivers water where it is needed. Or redesign the system. 

Sloping land and heavy clay soils invite runoff - due to gravity in the first 

case, due to slow water penetration in the second. To solve the problem, 

adjust the rate at which water is applied. If you use sprinklers, you can 

improve penetration by watering in several successive short intervals, 

allowing time for water to soak in between each spell of sprinkling. 

Terraces and basins can also help prevent runoff on slopes.

ANNUAL SUPERINTENDENT’S 

FUN RUN RAISES $120,000 

Through continued and tremendous generosity, Cypress-Fairbanks 

ISD staff, students, community members and business partners came 

together to raise $120,000 for the eighth annual Superintendent’s Fun 

Run, held virtually this year on May 1 st . CFISD presented a check to the 

Cy-Fair Educational Foundation (CFEF) on May 5 th . 

Tasked to “Run Together From Wherever,” numerous CFISD staff members 

and students and community members performed their own run or 

walks virtually on May 1 st , posting and sharing photos on social media. 

Woodard Elementary School was recognized as the top contributing 

elementary school, followed by Duryea Elementary School and third 

place Andre’ Elementary School. Woodard was also honored as the 

elementary campus with the highest overall participation. Among middle 

schools, Hamilton Middle School was the top contributing campus. It was 

followed by Salyards Middle School and Arnold Middle School, which 

placed second and third, respectively. 

Cypress Ranch High School was recognized as the top contributing high 

school, followed by runner-up Cypress Falls High School and third place 

Bridgeland High School. Cypress Ranch was also recognized as having 

the most members (26) register for the Superintendent’s Century Club 

(registration total equaled or exceeded $100). 

CFISD’s School Administration & Leadership Development department 

was recognized as the top contributing small department. Among 

large departments, the honor went to Curriculum, Instruction and 

Accountability. 

CFISD PROPOSES PLAN TO BOARD 

FOR VIRTUAL SCHOOL IN 2021-2022 

CFISD administrators presented proposed plans for a Cypress-Fairbanks 

ISD Virtual School to the Board of Trustees during its regularly scheduled 

meeting on May 10 th . The virtual campus plan is contingent upon the 

Texas Legislature adopting specific legislation to permit and fund remote 

learning for the 2021-2022 school year. In the event this does not occur, 

CFISD will not be able to open the virtual school and applicants will be 

notified. 

The CFISD Virtual School would be open to incoming students in grades 

4-12 who meet entry requirements. The campus would have no tuition 

fees and a variety of courses would be offered. All coursework would be 

completed virtually and teachers would only teach virtual students. 

Students not currently enrolled in CFISD may apply to the Virtual School; 

however, students must be enrolled for the 2021-2022 school year in order 

to be eligible. Virtual students will have the opportunity to participate 

in virtual clubs and organizations and will not participate in on-campus 

activities at their zoned campus. Applications will be available on the 

CFISD website. 

CFISD FAMILIES IN TRANSITION 

PROGRAM OFFERS BACKPACKS OF LOVE 

This spring, CFISD’s Families in Transition (FIT) program continued to 

support students who have been identified as homeless with a new 

initiative: Backpacks of Love. The FIT program aims to provide students 

with EASE (enrollment, attendance, success academically and extended 

services) support. The Backpacks of Love project was designed to ensure 

that students in grades 3-12 were equipped with tools that enabled them 

to take part in the district’s free and/or virtual summer school offerings. 

“It is our goal to provide homeless students with essential supplies 

for academic success,” said Bobbie Jones, lead attendance officer and 

homeless liaison. “This project was a labor of love and brought so much 

joy to our hearts.” 

During the week of April 12 th , retired counselors and members of the 

FIT team diligently worked to fill backpacks with hand sanitizing wipes, 

hygiene kits, a wireless mouse, a magnetic dry-erase board, dry-erase 

markers, a mouse pad, an adjustable clip lamp, snacks and headphones. 

A select number of high school juniors also qualified to receive an iPad 

to aid in their access to courses and college/workforce training. The team 

prepared more than 600 backpacks in their effort to continue to ensure 

that every student has the materials and opportunity to succeed. 

CFISD NAMED ONE OF 2021 BEST 

COMMUNITIES FOR MUSIC EDUCATION 

CFISD was awarded the “Best Communities for Music Education” national 

designation from the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) 

Foundation for the fourth consecutive year. 

A signature program of the NAMM Foundation, the designation showcases 

a commitment to music education and the arts by offering an array of 

opportunities for students. Now in its 22nd year, the award qualifications 

include nuanced questioning on funding, participation, instruction time 

and more. The qualification process is done in partnership with the Music 

Research Institute at the University of Kansas. 

The NAMM Foundation and the Music Research Institute strive to support 

communities that are continuing to assure music education standards for 

their students.

There are plenty of primitive campsites to choose from spread out 

among the cypress-lined bayous and longleaf pine forests.

outdoor fun activities and mind-blowing views. There are drive-up 

campsites, primitive sites, and backpack sites all available in this 

stunning setting. The hike-in and drive-up sites all have water nearby 

but no hookups. Perhaps the highlight of this location is spectacular 

Gorman Falls, where water cascades down 65 feet into a fern-shrouded 

grotto. On hot summer days, you can cool off in one of the many 

pretty swimming holes. Ample opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors 

from paddling the river, fishing, mountain biking, and hiking 

around 35 miles of trails. While you’re here, why not get down and 

dirty and take a guided cavern tour?

in Texas! Take the Ross Maxell Scenic Drive to see the ruins of Sam 

Nail Ranch. Spectacular limestone canyon of Santa Elena, carved 

over millennia by the Rio Grande. Pay a visit to historical Langford 

Hot Springs, where you can see the foundations of an old bathhouse. 

Big Bend extends for 114 miles along the Rio Grande and offers visitors 

the best primitive and roadside camping options in the entire 

state of Texas. Experienced backpackers will relish the challenge of 

tough hiking trails that ascend to almost 8,000 feet, where incredible 

panoramic vistas can be enjoyed in total isolation. Families will love 

the dinosaur fossil experience. You can take a canoe or kayak and 

go paddling down the Rio Grande through Mariscal and St Helena 

Canyons, taking in some of the most beautiful, memorable views of 

nature at its best in the whole of the state.

ENCHANTED 

ROCK 

The area is probably most well-known for its colossal piece of pink 

granite rock, which is one of the largest known natural rock formations 

in the U.S. The area has almost 11 miles of hiking trails (although 

biking is not permitted.) You can even take a midnight hike 

to see the incredible display of brilliant stars against the velvet-black 

summer sky without the interference of urban light pollution. Experienced 

rock climbers will find a challenge in scaling the pink granite 

cliff faces here, and there’s plenty of desert wildlife for the kids to spot 

too. There are 35 walk-in campsites here, all of which are equipped 

with picnic tables, grills, water, tent pads, fire rings, and restrooms 

with showers. If you prefer to keep things super-basic, there are 20 

primitive, hike-in campsites scattered around Moss Lake and Walnut 

Springs, accessible via a one to three-mile hike across rugged terrain. 

There’s also a group primitive campground that will take 75 people. 

The site has a private entrance and composting toilets but no water.

GARNER STATE PARK 

Garner State Park is a great place to 

visit for a swim or hike, or to enjoy 

a relaxing weekend. With 2.9 miles 

of Frio River winding through 1,774 

acres of scenic Hill Country terrain, the park offers lots to see and do! 

Swim in the Frio River or float its waters on an inner tube, operate 

a paddle boat, and hike 16 miles of scenic trails. You can also camp, 

study nature, picnic, canoe, fish, play miniature golf, geocache and 

ride bikes. Overnight visitors can stay in screened shelters, cabins 

or campsites. Large groups can rent the screened shelter or group 

campsite. The park’s concessionaire sells meals and snacks during 

the busy season, and rents the pavilion in the off season. Since the 

1940s, young folks (and the young at heart) have been gathering at 

the park’s concession building on summer evenings for a jukebox 

dance. They still do so today. Visitors can rent paddle boats, kayaks 

and inner tubes, as well as tables, barbecue pits, heaters and fans. 

The park’s concessionaire operates a tube shuttle and putt-putt golf 

course during busy seasons. Rent a small locker near the boathouse
