Genevieve Flowers Elementary Education Award presented by Dr. Frank Thouvenot James Povich<br />

This award is given for service to the School of Education and the <strong>University</strong>, involvement in<br />

education activities, and potential as a professional educator. Mr. Duane Flowers, a member of the<br />

<strong>Lindenwood</strong> <strong>University</strong> Board of Directors, established this award in honor of his mother, a retired<br />

teacher.<br />

Larry Doyle Secondary Education Award presented by Dr. William Blackburn Nickola Nicholson<br />

This award is given for service to the School of Education and the <strong>University</strong>, involvement in<br />

education activities, and potential as a professional educator. Dr. Doyle, a professional educator and<br />

former professor in the <strong>Lindenwood</strong> School of Education, established this award.<br />

Joe and Nora Killian Physical Education Award presented by Dr. Annie Alameda Andrew Elmendorf<br />

This award is given for service to the Physical Education Department and the <strong>University</strong>, involvement<br />

in physical education activities, and potential as a professional educator. Vice President Richard<br />

Boyle and his wife, Karen, established this award in honor of Karen’s parents.<br />

Richard and Karen Boyle Special Education Award presented by Dr. Janis Freeman Emily Milligan<br />

This award is given for service to the School of Education and the <strong>University</strong>, involvement in<br />

education activities, and potential as a professional educator. Dr. Richard Boyle, a professional<br />

educator and Vice President for Human Resources and Dean of Faculty at <strong>Lindenwood</strong> <strong>University</strong>,<br />

and his wife Karen, a former special education teacher and now a counselor in the Fort Zumwalt<br />

School District, established this award.<br />

Lois A. Evans Gifted Education Award presented by Professor Mary Gismegian Janel Hubbard<br />

This honor is conferred upon the graduate student who exhibits the most outstanding ability to<br />

merge conceptual intelligence and creativity in the design of learning experiences or curricula for<br />

academically gifted students. <strong>Lindenwood</strong> President James D. Evans established this award in honor<br />

of his wife, a teacher and specialist in gifted education.<br />

Nancy Polette Early Childhood Education Award presented by Dr. Donna Nack Jennifer Nutt<br />

This award is given for service to the School of Education and the <strong>University</strong>, involvement in<br />

education activities, and potential as a professional educator. Paul Polette established this award in<br />

honor of his wife Nancy, who has been a professional educator for over 50 years.<br />

Sue Spellmann Graduate Award in Education presented by Dr. Terry Stewart Lori Elliott<br />

This award is given to the graduate student who has demonstrated outstanding academic achievement,<br />

leadership, and potential as a professional educator. Former <strong>Lindenwood</strong> <strong>University</strong> President Dennis<br />

Spellmann established this award in honor of his wife, a distinguished teacher.<br />

Francis and Elizabeth Huss Graduate Award in Education Administration presented by Vice President Richard Boyle Kim Harris<br />

This award is given to the graduate student who has demonstrated outstanding academic achievement,<br />

leadership, and potential as a professional school administrator. Dr. Francis Huss, a retired<br />

achievement or potential as a school librarian. Dorothy Doyle, a retired school librarian, is the<br />

Alvin M. Francis Award in Educational Leadership presented by Dr. Cynthia Bice Patricia Leitsch<br />

This award is given to a first generation graduate student from rural roots. The student receiving<br />

This award is named for the Lectra Corporation in recognition of its significant $3 million donation<br />

of state-of-the-art industry software. This honor goes to the student who has exhibited the most<br />

outstanding creative and academic talent and exceptional promise in the field of fashion design.<br />

The James Magee II Memorial Scholarship <strong>honors</strong> the memory of James Magee II, a <strong>Lindenwood</strong><br />

Ledell Bitzer Communications Award presented by Dean Mike Wall Micah Woodard<br />

This award is given to the senior who demonstrates outstanding academic performance and<br />

distinguished service in department activities. Mrs. Ledell Bitzer established this award. Her late<br />

husband, Ralph, was a communications attorney who represented KCLC during its power increase<br />

from 10 watts to 1,500 watts in the 1960s.<br />

The Robert and Pauline Hammen Lifelong Learning Award presented by Professor Charlene Engleking Benjamin Heisel<br />

This award recognizes high scholarship and the zealous pursuit of leadership and community service<br />

and is awarded to the outstanding male student engaged in degree-oriented lifelong learning. It is<br />

named in memory of Pauline Hammen, longtime Office Manager of the LCIE <strong>program</strong>, and her<br />

husband Robert.<br />

This award is named in memory of Jean Fields, who taught English at <strong>Lindenwood</strong>. It is presented<br />

to the freshman whose essay or creative writing is judged by the English faculty to be the best of the<br />

This award, named in honor of <strong>Lindenwood</strong> alumna Linda Ross, is given to the sophomore, junior, or<br />

senior whose work in poetry, fiction, or drama is judged by the <strong>Lindenwood</strong> English faculty to be the<br />

best submitted.<br />

Howard Barnett Essay Award presented by Professor Spencer Hurst Kyle York<br />

This award is named in memory of Dr. Howard Barnett, who taught English at <strong>Lindenwood</strong>. The<br />

award goes to the sophomore, junior, or senior student who, in the judgment of the English faculty,<br />

has written the best essay of the year.<br />

French Award presented by Dr. Nancy Durbin Amanda Moehlenpah<br />

The recipient of the French Award is selected based not only on his or her outstanding academic<br />

achievement in the study of French language and literature, but also for a recognized interest in the<br />

acquisition of cultural proficiency, as well as enthusiastic dedication to the French <strong>program</strong>, including<br />

participation in extra-curricular cultural activities and efforts to encourage others in their pursuit of<br />

This award recognizes academic excellence in the study of religion. This award is named in honor of<br />

Harmon and Professor Emerita Jeanne Harmon Huesemann. Dr. Harmon was a longtime chaplain and<br />

Pals, alumna and former member of the <strong>Lindenwood</strong> <strong>University</strong> Board of Directors, and Mr. Pals,<br />

businessman and community leader, established this award.<br />

Joseph G. Mathews Sales and Marketing Award presented by Dr. Okey P. Onyia Fabian Willskytt<br />

This award <strong>honors</strong> academic accomplishments, professional promise, and scholarly activities in the<br />

fields of business, marketing, and sales. Mr. Mathews, a member of the <strong>Lindenwood</strong> <strong>University</strong><br />

Board of Directors, established this award in the memory of his granddaughter, Mariah Sights<br />

Dennis Spellmann established this award to promote the next generation of nonprofit leaders and was,<br />

himself, a pioneer graduate (1956) of the American Humanics Program.<br />

This award is given to the international student who has shown exemplary academic achievement and<br />

This award is for a student in interdisciplinary studies who has contributed to the field of international<br />

initiative to make a difference. The award is given in honor of Dr. Rose Lyn Zanville, Ph.D., by her<br />

sister Dr. Holly Zanville, Ph.D., both graduates of <strong>Lindenwood</strong> College for Women.<br />

This award recognizes the student who has demonstrated academic achievement and leadership in<br />

Dr. Donna Card Charron Philosophy Award presented by Dr. Rachel Douchant Emily Platt<br />

The Dr. Donna Card Charron Philosophy Award is given to the student who shows<br />

academic excellence in philosophy and a concern for what Dr. Charron called philosophy’s role as<br />

“reason in the world.” Dr. Charron was professor of philosophy at <strong>Lindenwood</strong> from 1989-2005.<br />

During that time she laid the foundation for the Philosophy Program, helped found the Honors Program<br />

and Honors College, and tirelessly promoted the classical tradition of liberal learning and culture.<br />
