NATIONAL CHARITY LEAGUE, INC. LADY BIRD
CHAPTER HOSTS FOOD DRIVE
The National Charity League, Inc., Lady Bird Chapter (NCL, Inc.)
hosted a food drive at the Westland Baptist Church on Grand
Parkway/99. The Lady Bird Chapter class of 2026 hosted the event
and invited participants to drop off non-perishable food items in
large paper bags to the church. Over 111 bags, 375 pounds of nonperishable
food items were collected and donated to Katy Christian
Ministries (KCM). KCM is one of 27 philanthropic organizations that
the National Charity League, Lady Bird Chapter supports in the Katy,
Texas area. Katy Christian Ministries has been helping local families
and individuals fight poverty, food insecurity, domestic violence and
sexual assault since 1984 and the NCL Lady Bird Chapter is proud to
continue to support their cause.

organization comprised of mothers and daughters, grade 7-12,

KATY VIRTUAL SCHOOL RECOGNIZED FOR
OUTSTANDING DISTANCE LEARNING
At Katy Independent School District, online learning has become
an increasingly popular and effective method of education, by both
students and parents, because of the expanded learning opportunities
available. Due to its commitment to offer distance education, the
District’s Katy Virtual School (KVS) has been recognized by the Texas
Distance Learning Association (TxDLA) as the 2021 K-12 winner of the
Outstanding Commitment to Excellence and Innovation in Distance
Education recognition.
“Katy ISD was the only K-12 school district in Texas to receive such a
prestigious award,” said Susan Richards, Katy ISD Instructional Technology
e-Learning Manager. “KVS has expanded over the years to provide
secondary students quality instruction outside of normal school hours and
during the summer to support their graduation plans,” added Richards.
KVS launched in 2013 with a primary goal of offering choice and
flexibility for rigorous online courses developed and taught by Katy ISD
teachers. Over 45 Advanced Placement (AP), Katy Advanced Program and
academic level courses were available to students this year with more
courses being added each year. Just last year, over 4,000 students utilized
KVS to reach their educational goals. KVS is a different program from the
recently developed Katy Virtual Academy (KVA), which was created for
online learning during the pandemic.
DONATUTORS
Donatutors is a nonprofit tutoring organization that donates 100% of
our proceeds to charity. All of our tutors are straight-A students at Seven
Lakes High school and we offer a multitude of courses like creative
writing, computer science, biology, public speaking, ICTW writing and
many different math courses too. We charge $20 per class, but the first

Donatutors was able to raise $1,283 which we used 70% to give to a
Houston based charity called NAMI and 30% to buy a bunch of masks

JUNE IS NATIONAL CAMPING MONTH
National Camping Month in June is an excellent time to pack up your
gear and experience nature. Whether you like roughing it or prefer
to have a few modern conveniences when heading out to the trail, it’s
important to keep a few things in mind:
1. Make sure you have plenty of fresh water or a fresh water source.
2. Take a first aid kit and that it is stocked.
3. Pack waterproof matches.
4. Take non-perishable food such as granola bars, jerky, peanut butter,
chocolate bars and dried fruits, especially if you are not taking a cooler.
5. Pack fruits, vegetables and meats separately and keep chilled in a
cooler.
6. Include sunblock, even for cloudy days.
7. Rain gear, jackets and blankets are necessary for cooler weather.
Around the country, there are a variety of campsites available. The more
modern campsite includes showers and recreational facilities. These often
include water hookups and parking pads for RVs and campers and cabins to
rent as well as more primitive sites with no electrical hookups designed for
tent usage. Other parks only allow primitive camping and require everything
you pack into the park to be packed out. So, seriously consider your needs
if you are hiking into the park for your stay. These are not for the glampers.
Gather family and friends, don’t forget the s’mores supply and go
camping! Nature is calling and there are so many ways to enjoy a
weekend or even more camping. National Camping Month has been
observed since the 1970s.

NATIONAL PTSD AWARENESS DAY
National PTSD Awareness Day is observed annually on June 27 th . This is a day to recognize the
effects post-traumatic stress has on the lives of those affected by it.
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder has a profound effect on the lives of those who suffer from
it. The statistics alone are staggering, but can only tell a portion of the story. The trauma
and anxiety associated with PTSD is a constant burden, inseparable from the sufferer. It was
once a condition that was attributed only to returning combat veterans, but more and more
the condition is diagnosed in those who have experienced violent crime or lived through
catastrophic events. According to PTSD United, 20% of adults in the United States who have
experienced a traumatic event suffer from PTSD.
The United States Senate established PTSD Awareness Day in 2010 following then-Sen. Kent
Conrad’s efforts to designate a day of awareness as a tribute to Army Staff Sgt. Joe Biel of the
North Dakota National Guard, Davison said. Biel suffered from PTSD and took his life in April
2007 after returning to North Dakota following his second tour of duty in the Iraq War. Biel’s
birthday, June 27 th , was chosen to mark PTSD Awareness Day and honor his memory.
Reach out to someone you know who suffers from PTSD. Let them know you care and are
there to help.

Howdy! Our names are Kai, Cazden, Robbie and Jack, we are four SLHS
Alumni and Texas Film School Graduates. For the past year we have
been creating Katy’s newest and only Animation and Filmmaking camp,
Creator Camp! Our goal is to share with students the wonders of film and
animation without the dullness of note taking and lectures. We designed
our 3-day camps so that students will learn hands-on and in real-time,
creating Special effects, Green Screen effects, Sound effects and loads
more. Each day, students will come home with a new movie they created
themselves and on the last day we will transform a classroom into a
mock Oscars Film Festival where your child will pick their favorite film
that they made to be shown on the big screen! We are running our first
camps this summer and we would love to have some support from the
local community to get us off to a good start. Camps are held at Mirus
Academy Katy, 5561 3 rd St, Katy, TX 77493 and Each camper will receive a
