NEWSLETTER DEADLINE: submittals to Dave Ellis (dave@daveellis.com) by the 20th of each month
Williamsburg Settlement | June 2021 3

The Yard of the Month for May 2021 is awarded to Viki Henson
LeCamu and Gary LeCamu of 22403 S. Rebecca Burwell.
Vicki and Gary were married in 2019 after dating for 20 years! At
home their “baby” is their 13 year old dog Molly. Their son, Steven
LeCamu, lives in Denver, Colorado with his wife Sloan. Vicki is
now retired after working for Chevron Corporation for 40 years
and now keeps herself busy working with glass mosaics and
fusing along with her gardening. Gary is still working running two
businesses.
MAY YARD OF THE MONTH
lantanas in red, yellow, orange and pink. The pink azaleas in those
beds froze but are now showing signs of life as are several of their
hibiscus plants. These beds also include orange cannas; white
crepe myrtle; spider plants and roses in red, pink and yellow. Their
yard is certified by monarchwatch.org as providing a monarch
butterfly friendly environment. In the center of the side yard,
they have many milkweed plants for the monarch butterflies and
caterpillars and in that same bed thy have a large leaf milkweed as
they do in their backyard. Continuing the butterfly friendly theme
their backyard also has milkweed and pipevine plants
As they live on a corner lot Vicki and Gary have a huge yard which
they put to excellent use by filling it with a large variety of trees
and plants. The front yard contains two well-maintained pine
trees, surrounded with wandering purple jew which has small
pink flowers that the bees love. They also have a beautiful white
magnolia tree that has paperwhite bulbs in the bed below it.
Like so many of our yards theirs also is still recuperating from the
damage done by our February freeze. Their beautiful ivy in that
bed froze and has not yet shown signs of life - but they say that
they still have hope! Their yard also has a couple of oak trees and a
large pecan tree from which the squirrels get most of the pecans.
But Vicki and Gary say they don’t mind! Surrounding the house
are flower beds with a large variety of plants including a red tip
photinia; more wandering purple jew; a pink pillow shamrock
plant that dies down in the heat of the summer; purple salvia and
4
All the flowerbeds in the front are surrounded by beautiful natural
brown rocks. At the front door entrance, there are several pot
plants one being a huge Christmas cactus. There are also two
ivies, one named monstera adansonia swiss cheese and the other
is a money plant ivy. There is also a miniature cypress tree that
Vicki got at Christmas and which still has the bow on it!
Vicki says that the thing she likes about the Settlement are the
wonderful people who live here and the mature trees that you
can only have in a subdivision as old as ours.
Our congratulations go to Vicki and Gary in being awarded May
2021 Yard of the Month. The result of the effort that they spend
on their yard is much appreciated by all of us – as well as by the
monarch butterflies!
ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
The 2021 Annual General Meeting of members of the Williamsburg
Settlement Maintenance Association was held on April 20 th at our
Clubhouse. The main business of the meeting was the election of
two directors to fill the expiring terms of CO Holt and Dave Ellis
plus two vacancies left following the resignations of Chris Cox and
more recently, for health reasons, Michael Wood.
Unfortunately, no candidates stood for election for the two
vacancies left by these resignations. Both CO and Dave were
elected by acclamation each for another 3-year term.
As the one-year terms of the Association Officers expire at the
annual meeting it has to be followed by a regular Board meeting
to elect new officers. At this Board meeting CO was reelected as
President and Dave as Association Secretary and Treasurer.
A REMINDER OF AN OVERLOOKED
MAINTENANCE FEE PAYMENT OPTION
For those who every year have difficulty in making the January
1 st Association maintenance fee payment there is an option
that you may want to consider. Although at first blush it may
seem counter-intuitive, with a bit of advance planning it has
considerable advantages. This is to get “ahead of the curve” and
pre-pay your fees. At no cost to you you can make regular (or
irregular!) payments of any value either by check or on-line via
the Crest website thus building a pre-paid balance. So when
the invoice for the following year arrives you will have a part
or all of it already paid! And you will avoid all fees and interest
charges associated with a Payment Agreement; you will be
able to get your pool tags and rent the clubhouse; you won’t
get your trash cut off for late payment and you will never end
up with large collection bills from the Association Attorney.
What’s not to love about this?
STREET LIGHT OUTAGES
To report a burned out streetlight, any resident may call
CenterPoint directly at 713-207-2222. However, for those with
Internet access, you may also make this report on-line. For those
interested, you can go to http://cnp.centerpointenergy.com/
outage. Then enter your contact details so that they can get back
to you if more information is required. On the following page
enter the details of the light(s) with the problem. Just as you
would if reporting the outage via the telephone, you will need
to provide the street address where the light is located and the
6-digit number that is prominently displayed on the front of the
pole. Under normal circumstances the crew will be out to fix the
problem within 7 working days.
Anyone noticing a streetlight that is out or has some other
malfunction is encouraged to report the problem to CenterPoint
via either of these two methods without delay. Our Association is
charged for every streetlight each month, irrespective of whether
or not the light is functioning. So please help us get value for your
hard earned money!
DRAFT MINUTES OF THE APRIL 20, 2021 ANNUAL MEETING OF MEMBERS
OF WILLIAMSBURG SETTLEMENT MAINTENANCE ASSOCIATION, INC AND
THE FOLLOWING MEETING OF THE ASSOCIATION BOARD OF DIRECTORS
The Annual Meeting of Member of the Williamsburg Settlement Maintenance Association, Inc. was held on Tuesday, April 20, 2021 at 7
PM at the Williamsburg Settlement clubhouse, 1602 Hoyt, Katy, Texas 77449.
ATTENDANCE
Board Members present were Dave Ellis, CO Holt, Jim Calvert,
James Kelley and Bill Petry.
Also, in attendance was Cindy Bojé, representing Crest
Management.
A quorum was qualified by representation in person and/or
by proxy of ninety-four (94) members. With a quorum being
established, the meeting was called to order at 7 PM
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
The minutes of the March 16, 2021 Board of Directors Meeting were
presented and a motion was made, seconded and unanimously
approved to accept the minutes as written.
ELECTION OF DIRECTORS
The next item on the agenda was the election of four (4) directors.
Two positions will each be for a three (3) year term and two
positions will be to fill two director vacancies the terms of which
expire in 2023. There were two (2) candidates on the ballot, CO
Holt and Dave Ellis. The floor was opened for nominations. There
were no nominations from the floor and a motion was made,
seconded and unanimously approved to close nominations
from the floor. With no further nominations, a motion was made,
seconded and unanimously approved to elect the two candidates
by acclamation. CO and Dave will serve until 2024. The vacant
positions remain open and when filled the appointments will be
announced at a later Board meeting.
FINANCIAL PRESENTATION
The next item on the agenda was the Association financial report,
a copy of which was included in the members’ packets. The
report was presented by Dave Ellis, the Treasurer. He reminded
those present that the Association budgets for both the annual
operating expenses and to fund the periodic replacement of
the Association’s infrastructure as items reach the end of their
operating lives and that the funds are maintained and managed
in two separate accounts for this purpose. He presented the 2020
budget followed by the financial results for the year showing
performance compared with that predicted and explained how
a reserve study is update annually to compute the required
contribution to the capital reserve.
He concluded by stating that the Association’s finances are in
excellent health. 2020 was closed out with a surplus in excess of
$60K due primarily to the termination of the HOA funded security
patrols and a capital reserve funding level of 102%.
COMMUNITY OPERATIONS UPDATE
CO Holt informed the members that the Association has
completed several projects this year including the replacement
of the lighting in the clubhouse big room and exterior hallway
and replacement of the pool diving board. New Christmas
decorations were also purchased and installed. CO stated that,
6
as could be seen by the attendees, the clubhouse suffered major
damages during the freeze and the Association is working with
approved contractors to return it to service as soon as possible.
As the kitchen was badly impacted the opportunity is being
taken to bring forward a planned upgrade to include replacing
the aging kitchen appliances. The big room repairs will include
replacing the carpet and vinyl tiles and also the installation of
sound absorbing panels on the big room walls to improve the
acoustics. Future planned projects include adding Wi-Fi capability
and enhancements to our security surveillance system.
HOMEOWNER OPEN FORUM
At this time, there was a general question and answer period
covering various topics including the Association’s savings from
the removal of the HOA funded security to cover Association
ongoing expenses and gratitude to the MUD Board for installing
generators at their plants.
The Annual Meeting was adjourned at 7:46 PM and those residents
interested were invited to stay to attend to a Board meeting to
immediately follow at which Association officers would be elected
and responsibilities assigned.
PET ID TAGS
Folks - as soon as the vet gives your young pets their Rabies shot
remember to get their ID tags. The Rabies tag lists the name, phone
number and address of the vet. So! All you need to do is put the Rabies
tag onto the pet’s collar and leave it there all the time. That way, if the
pet gets loose, anyone finding him or her can look at the tag to see
the vet’s phone number and call to report the lost animal. Better yet,
add another tag to your pet’s collar that lists the dog or cat’s name
and your own phone number or address. You can get these from any
pet store. When a pet has these but goes astray, anyone finding it can
call you and you can go get him or her right away. Your pet will be
very glad to see you! A happy pet is a loving pet.
Animals that are not properly restrained pose a threat to all our
residents. While you may know your pet is friendly, an animal
running at someone who is walking by is very scary for that person.
Many children are afraid of animals and become frightened, which
could result in the child getting hurt trying to avoid the animal.
Veterinary Public Health (formerly called Harris County Animal
Control) advises that, “All dogs and cats must be kept under
restraint while in the unincorporated areas of Harris County, Texas.
The custodian of a dog or cat is not authorized to have, harbor
or keep any unlicensed dog or cat or to allow any dog or cat to
become a stray.”
Restraint is defined as the control of a dog or cat under the
following circumstances:
1. When it is controlled by a line or leash not more then six (6)
feet in length, if the line or leash is held by a human being who
is capable of controlling or governing the dog or cat in question.
2. When it is within a fully enclosed vehicle.
3. When it is on the premise of the custodian and the animal does
not have access to sidewalk to street.
While it may be nice to have your animal out in the yard while you
work or play, it is against the law, unless the animal is properly
restrained.
Let’s all help keep our community a safe and comfortable place
for all our residents by being responsible pet owners. This will not
only protect anyone who may be walking or bicycling in the area,
but also the pet owner who could be held legally responsible or
possibly sued for failing to properly restrain their pet.
KATY VIRTUAL SCHOOL RECOGNIZED FOR
OUTSTANDING DISTANCE LEARNING
At Katy Independent School District, online learning has become
an increasingly popular and effective method of education, by both
students and parents, because of the expanded learning opportunities
available. Due to its commitment to offer distance education, the
District’s Katy Virtual School (KVS) has been recognized by the Texas
Distance Learning Association (TxDLA) as the 2021 K-12 winner of the
Outstanding Commitment to Excellence and Innovation in Distance
Education recognition.
“Katy ISD was the only K-12 school district in Texas to receive such a
prestigious award,” said Susan Richards, Katy ISD Instructional Technology
e-Learning Manager. “KVS has expanded over the years to provide
secondary students quality instruction outside of normal school hours and
during the summer to support their graduation plans,” added Richards.
KVS launched in 2013 with a primary goal of offering choice and
flexibility for rigorous online courses developed and taught by Katy ISD
teachers. Over 45 Advanced Placement (AP), Katy Advanced Program and
academic level courses were available to students this year with more
courses being added each year. Just last year, over 4,000 students utilized
KVS to reach their educational goals. KVS is a different program from the
recently developed Katy Virtual Academy (KVA), which was created for
online learning during the pandemic.
DONATUTORS
Donatutors is a nonprofit tutoring organization that donates 100% of
our proceeds to charity. All of our tutors are straight-A students at Seven
Lakes High school and we offer a multitude of courses like creative
writing, computer science, biology, public speaking, ICTW writing and
many different math courses too. We charge $20 per class, but the first
one is free! For more information, check out donatutors.com or email
us at donatutors@gmail.com. What’s even cooler is that this summer
Donatutors was able to raise $1,283 which we used 70% to give to a
Houston based charity called NAMI and 30% to buy a bunch of masks
and canned food for donation. Please check us out!
JUNE IS NATIONAL CAMPING MONTH
National Camping Month in June is an excellent time to pack up your
gear and experience nature. Whether you like roughing it or prefer
to have a few modern conveniences when heading out to the trail, it’s
important to keep a few things in mind:
1. Make sure you have plenty of fresh water or a fresh water source.
2. Take a first aid kit and that it is stocked.
3. Pack waterproof matches.
4. Take non-perishable food such as granola bars, jerky, peanut butter,
chocolate bars and dried fruits, especially if you are not taking a cooler.
5. Pack fruits, vegetables and meats separately and keep chilled in a
cooler.
6. Include sunblock, even for cloudy days.
7. Rain gear, jackets and blankets are necessary for cooler weather.
Around the country, there are a variety of campsites available. The more
modern campsite includes showers and recreational facilities. These often
include water hookups and parking pads for RVs and campers and cabins to
rent as well as more primitive sites with no electrical hookups designed for
tent usage. Other parks only allow primitive camping and require everything
you pack into the park to be packed out. So, seriously consider your needs
if you are hiking into the park for your stay. These are not for the glampers.
Gather family and friends, don’t forget the s’mores supply and go
camping! Nature is calling and there are so many ways to enjoy a
weekend or even more camping. National Camping Month has been
observed since the 1970s.
8 BEST SUMMER VACATION
DESTINATIONS IN TEXAS
1. GALVESTON: If you’re looking for a classic beach getaway, then a visit
to Galveston is a must. Galveston beach is a popular summer destination
among Texans, especially those in Houston, since Galveston is only about an
hour drive from downtown. Galveston offers more than just the beach too,
however beach fun is why many people flock here. Enjoy great shopping
along the Strand, escape the heat by visiting Moody Gardens or try the
thrilling water rides at Schlitterbahn Waterpark. There are plenty of hotels,
resorts, and rental properties here that cater to the influx of summer tourism.
2. GARNER STATE PARK: Spend time camping and tubing down the Frio
River when you visit Garner State Park this summer. Garner State Park,
located in Concan, Texas, is a popular summer destination among Texans.
Although there are plenty of hiking and wildlife watching opportunities
in the park, the main draw here is truly the Frio River, where the state park
has 10 acres of river frontage. Many people kayak, tube, fish and even
snorkel here. Garner State Park is so popular during the summer that
the park hosts live music concerts on the weekend. This Texas summer
destination is definitely a family-friendly spot.
3. CORPUS CHRISTI: If you’re looking for more of a quiet beach scene than
Galveston, then Corpus Christi is more your vibe. Tourism grows here during
the summer and for good reason. Corpus Christi, or simply referred to as
“Corpus” by Texans, has beautiful Gulf Coast beaches that are perfect for
sunbathing, surfing, and windsurfing. If you’ve grown tired of the beach scene,
the town of Corpus Christi offers a number of attractions, such as the Texas
State Aquarium, the South Texas Botanical Garden, and the U.S.S Lexington.
4. SAN ANTONIO: Escape to central Texas this summer by vacationing in
San Antonio. With a unique city vibe full of history and culture, this Texas
city makes for a great summer getaway. Stroll the Riverwalk to enjoy a great
meal, explore the Alamo to learn about Texas history or even enjoy a thrilling
roller coaster at Six Flags Fiesta Texas. San Antonio is a great summer vacation
for foodies, since the area is packed with incredible restaurants from hole-inthe-wall
Mexican joints to classy cuisine found along the Riverwalk.
5. SOUTH PADRE ISLAND: South Padre Island may be known as a spring
break destination but it shouldn’t be dismissed as a great summer travel
spot as well. This Gulf Coast town is home to the most beautiful beaches in
the Lone Star State. If you’re hoping for beach time this summer, then South
Padre Island should be your destination of choice. With miles of white sand,
plenty of shops to occupy your non-beach days, and even a Schlitterbahn
Waterpark location, South Padre Island transcends from its spring break
reputation into a popular spot during the summer months too.
6. AUSTIN: Texas’ capital city has plenty to see and do during the summer
months. Known as the Live Music Capital of the World, music lovers will
find plenty of live music acts in Austin when they visit during June, July
and August. Big headliners always hit up ATX during their summer tours,
while local acts can be seen for free anywhere from coffee shops, local
music venues and even the airport. Visit the Texas State Capitol, view the bat
colony under the South Congress Bridge at dusk, shop the electric boutiques
along South Congress Avenue and enjoy a wide variety of food truck cuisine
during your summer stay in Austin. If you’re looking to escape the heat, take
a dip in the Barton Creek Greenbelt or Barton Springs Pool.
7. NEW BRAUNFELS: New Braunfels is a Hill Country destination that has
grown into a popular summer getaway due to the Guadalupe and Comal
Rivers and the up-and-coming craft beer scene here. Beat the Texas heat
by floating in the cool waters of the Comal or Guadalupe Rivers. New
Braunfels has strong German roots, so enjoy a bratwurst and a German
beer during your summer stay here. If dancing and live music is your
thing, then don’t miss out on a visit to the historic Gruene Hall, which is
only 10 minutes outside of New Braunfels.
8. BIG BEND NATIONAL PARK: Last but not least is Big Bend National
Park. Although this park is located in west Texas, a desert environment,
don’t let the heat scare you away. Take a hike during the early mornings
or evenings to catch views of wildlife and avoid the desert heat during
the day. This area is also known for its dark night skies, so stargazing is a
must when you visit during the summer. Take a scenic drive or raft the Rio
Grande to find a cool escape in this desert oasis.
KATY’S NEWEST FILMMAKING AND ANIMATION
CAMP CREATED BY SLHS ALUMNI
Howdy! Our names are Kai, Cazden, Robbie and Jack, we are four SLHS
Alumni and Texas Film School Graduates. For the past year we have
been creating Katy’s newest and only Animation and Filmmaking camp,
our 3-day camps so that students will learn hands-on and in real-time,
more. Each day, students will come home with a new movie they created
themselves and on the last day we will transform a classroom into a
mock Oscars Film Festival where your child will pick their favorite film
that they made to be shown on the big screen! We are running our first
camps this summer and we would love to have some support from the
local community to get us off to a good start. Camps are held at Mirus
Academy Katy, 5561 3 rd St, Katy, TX 77493 and Each camper will receive a
ROSE THERAPEUTIC FARM AND GOAT YOGA
SUMMER CAMPS
ROSE Therapeutic Farm Summer Camps are an exciting way to light
up any young person’s summer. Our camps provide unique, hands-on
opportunities for learning, growth, and fun. Campers spend their time
here immersed in the natural world, with animals and the environment.
Each camp is loaded with creative, enriching activities meant to help
your kiddos connect with nature and learn how to enjoy “the simple life.”
This is meant to be a real farm/ranch life experience so we will get dirty!
We will also be outside all day. We have a large barn where we will do our
crafts, eat lunch and other activities but it is not air-conditioned. Please
have your kiddos dress accordingly. If they don’t like being outdoors or
getting dirty, this may not be the camp for them.
* 1 to 4 day sessions available.
*Our camps are geared toward children ages 6 – 12.
*Each camp will have 18 or less participants. We must have at least 5
campers to start each camp.
Lunch can be provided or you can send a bag lunch with your kiddos.
We have a cooler we will keep these in. We will have access to fresh iced
water all day. Of course you are welcome to send a lunch with your kiddo
if you choose.
We have done everything we can to try and reopen our doors, including
becoming the first theater in the country to install hospital grade UV
lights in our air filtration system. We even offered a safe and distanced
indoor concert as well as an indoor offering from our educational touring
unit this past fall. And when those projects proved financially challenging
and COVID numbers spiked again, we created “Light Up the Lot” and
moved all our programming outdoors.
We’ve never given up. We never will give up. But due to circumstances
beyond our control, we find ourselves needing to pivot once more.
Which brings us to the announcement of our virtual season. Go to www.
