Dear Friends of Sinclair,
2004 was a year of tremendous change and accomplishment in the life of the college and the
foundation. In 2004, the college continued toward the goal of expanding capacity to enroll
and educate students in the Miami Valley region. This meant taking advantage of opportunities
to partner with the YMCA in parts of northern Montgomery County and continuing to explore
the possibility of becoming the official community college of Warren County. As of June 2005,
both of those partnerships have borne fruit and Sinclair will soon be a multi-campus college
while at the same time maintaining our investment and growing the enrollment at the main
downtown Dayton campus.
Also in 2004, the Sinclair Foundation launched the public phase of the $12 million Changing
Lives campaign with an announcement of $10.3 million already pledged or given. Sinclair was
also proud to celebrate the largest gift in the history of the college - $2.5 million from the
Mathile Community Fund. We expect to reach our $12 million goal and celebrate a successful
campaign in 2005.
The Mathile Community Fund gift is helping Sinclair address campaign goals of Readiness,
Resources and Retention. Some Mathile funds have already been expended in the establishment
of five new Academic Resource Centers (ARC) in Miami Valley high schools. These centers help
students increase their readiness to succeed with college level work once they enroll at Sinclair
or elsewhere. More ARC’s are scheduled to open over the next three years around the area.
We are grateful to our donors and supporters who have pledged and contributed $5,779,622
– more than any previous year in the history of the college. Our gains on investments amounted
to $1,677,448. Our net assets reached $26,405,365 at the close of 2004.
Sinclair continues to be the community’s college. We want to serve growing local educational
needs while being a resource to individuals who are seeking a better life and career through

Russ Hollis, a longtime supporter of students
at Sinclair Community College, was always

providing scholarship money for students
interested in engineering technology. hoiukjh His fotkukj
contributions became a meaningful dheyrytg way to fjjfirf
participate in the teaching and
learning process.
More than 30 years ago,
Russ Hollis decided to
open his business,
Venture Mfg. Co. He’d
observed how some
companies were managed
and how poorly their
employees were treated, and
thought there was a better way. Hollis knew that
using modern methods and treating employees
well were the keys to success of any business.
Today, his company is an outstanding example
of American manufacturing at its best.
By providing funds to support high school
students attending engineering courses at Sinclair,
students can obtain meaningful technological
careers.
Hollis’ viewpoint is, “I believe every person
needs the opportunity for a job.” Providing aid
to students gets them on the way to those jobs.

MORTENOUS A. JOHNSON

Mortenous Johnson, Sinclair’s Enrichment
Center Manager, is a joyful contributor to the
campaign. Johnson has had an interesting
journey. He’s a native New Yorker, an Air Force
veteran assigned to England and Wright-Patterson
Air Force base, a former
Sinclair student and current
staff member. His
undergraduate work
was at Wilberforce
University and he
received his master’s
from the University of
Dayton. Johnson is familiar
with Ohio education at many
levels. He is committed to
helping people receive great educational
experiences. Johnson has benefited from
Sinclair both as a student and staff member and
has received Sinclair’s Future Leaders and Student
Advocacy awards.
When Johnson worked as a facilitator for Sinclair’s
Young Scholars program, he was instrumental
in helping and motivating these high school
students to prepare for higher education. The
first in their families to attend college, the Young
Scholars are exposed to mentoring and other
on-campus experiences designed to inspire their
future success. Johnson also helped implement
the first of the Academic Resource Centers in
area high schools where he worked with students
who wanted to improve their academic skills
and college readiness.
When asked why he donated so generously to
the Changing Lives campaign, he smiled and
said, “It’s a small way my wife, Fran, and I can
contribute to the lives of people in our
community.
My family is guided by spiritual and practical
principles that suggest we must always give back.”

DR. NICHOLAS SCAMBILIS
The Sinclair Community College faculty and staff
have wholeheartedly supported Changing Lives.
Dr. Nicholas (Nick) Scambilis, Chairperson
for Fire Science Technology, Safety Engineering
Technology and Environmental Technology
departments knew how lives can be changed
through education. He and his wife, Estelle,
donated very generously to the campaign.
While serving 49 years in the Air
Force, Scambilis completed his
education. Sponsored by the
Air Force, he received both
his master’s and doctorate
degrees. The Scambilis’ last
Air Force assignment was at
Wright Patterson Air force Base
in 1985. Feeling that they had
benefited from the government’s
programs, the Scambilises felt that they should
give back to others.
Scambilis’ eight year career at Sinclair has provided
the opportunity to do so. During that time,
Scambilis saw a lot of kids who wanted to go to
school, but didn’t have the resources. “We’ve
been very fortunate, so we just wanted to give
something back. We wanted to make sure others
had the opportunity to attend college.”
JAN & JOE TOBIAS

Jan and Joe Tobias have more than 45 years of
combined service to Sinclair Community College.
They have lived in Dayton their entire lives.
The Tobiases met at church as teenagers and
have been together ever since. They’ve worked
together at Sinclair and have seen its impact on
many people. A relationship with Sinclair has
been a family affair. Jan Tobias’ father worked
at Sinclair for 10 years and had a second retirement
from the college. Their children attended classes
at Sinclair. Joe Tobias’ brother, who
works in the air conditioning
business, takes classes at Sinclair
as part of his continuing
education. So when asked
why they gave to the
Changing Lives campaign, Jan
Tobias said, “Sinclair has been
good to us.” Joe Tobias agreed
and added, “We knew if we gave
money to Sinclair, it would be spent wisely.”
As manager of the Sinclair bookstore, Joe Tobias
knows the costs of books. He said, “A freshman
may spend $500 - $600 for their books. You
know Sinclair has very low tuition, but even
Sinclair’s low tuition may not seem low to some
students.” This financial burden on students can
be relieved through the philanthropy of caring
and generous people like the Tobias family.
Jan and Joe Tobias gave to the campaign, because
they are thankful that Sinclair enabled them to
have a good life and they want to share their
blessings with others. Jan Tobias retires in 2005,
but she leaves knowing her family’s contribution
will change the lives of deserving Sinclair students.

Alumni Advisory Committee During 2004-05, the Alumni Advisory Committee met quarterly to discuss
the launch of new activities and benefits for the college’s more than 25,000 alumni.
Alumni Group Travel Program Alumni Affairs kicked off a new group travel program for alumni,
employees, and other friends of the college, with proceeds benefiting the Sinclair Alumni Association
Scholarship fund.
Short-Term Medical Insurance New graduates caught in the medical insurance gap between graduation
and their first job now have the option to purchase short-term medical insurance.
Career Fairs Approximately 35 alumni volunteered at the Career Services’ Career Exploration event
by providing testimonials and inspiration to current students seeking career information.
Special Events Alumni Affairs hosted its third annual Alumni Night at the Theatre at a Sinclair Theatre
Department’s performance of Glass Menagerie. Also hosted was the second annual Alumni Jazz Night,
with a special alumni reception prior to the performance. These events brought more than 100 alumni
and friends to campus this year.
The Alumni Association continued researching a linkage with the Sinclair Tartan Campus Store
to expand its retail merchandise offerings. In addition, they joined the Alumni Affairs office in the
launch of the new travel program and hosted its very successful Breakfast with Santa for Sinclair
alumni, family and friends. All proceeds from Alumni Association fundraising initiatives support
scholarships for Sinclair students.

The indoor donor recognition area, located in the Great Hall of Sinclair Center, celebrates lifetime giving of over $250,000. This
location features two separate water walls flanking the opening at the north end of the hall. Bronze plaques engraved with donor
names are mounted on either side of the two water elements. This site in the Great Hall was chosen for recognition because it is
the on-campus location most frequently visited by members of the community.
The outdoor donor recognition area is located on the broad plaza outside the west entrance to the Great Hall. The 60' x 60' area
is bordered by four L-shaped planters, each containing a black granite wall to which are affixed bronze plaques engraved with
donor names. Initially, one corner will be used to celebrate Changing Lives donors of $10,000 or greater; another will recognize
David A. Sinclair Legacy Society donors. The remaining two corners are for visions yet to come.
