Rossland Fire Dept
history on display
Forged in Fire: The Rossland Fires covers the history of Rossland’s
significant fires and the beginning of the Rossland Fire
Department.
Like many boomtowns, Rossland was plagued with fires in
its early days. Mining camps were especially affected by fires
due to quickly-built and makeshift structures largely constructed
of wood. Insurance companies urged the town to
make fire upgrades, and in 1896 the Rossland Fire Department
was formed as a volunteer force. Still, Rossland’s downtown
was hit by huge fires in 1902, 1927, and 1929, altering the
building landscape and forcing additional fire safety upgrades.
The most notable difference was the loss of the upper floor of
the Post Office in 1929. The history of the fires and Rossland’s
firefighters is a tale of perseverance, calamity, and community.
While we could not bring one of the fire trucks in our collection
downtown, Forged in Fire features photographs and artifacts
from our extensive fire department collection. We have
created a map showing the locations of the major Rossland
fires to help explain where key fires took place.
This exhibit will be on display in the front window of the
Prestige Mountain Resort during the summer of 2021. Follow
that up with a visit to the museum to check out our fire trucks
and additional equipment!
Invasive Asian Clams Found in
Kootenay Waterbody
The Ministry of Environment (MOE) confirmed that invasive
Asian clams (Corbicula fluminea) were found in the Pend
D’Oreille River this spring. This is the first confirmed presence
of live invasive freshwater clams in the Central Kootenay
region. However, this is not the first confirmation of these
clams in B.C.: they exist in the lower mainland, and in 2020,
they were found in Shuswap Lake. The MOE is assessing distribution
and have conducted preliminary surveys near the
Salmo River confluence.
The non-native clams are a concern to the Central Kootenay
Invasive Species Society (CKISS), a local non-profit that works
to prevent the spread of invasive species in the region. The
clams can clog water treatment systems, contaminate drinking
water, and negatively alter aquatic ecosystems by competing
with native species for food and habitat.
In response to the recent discovery, CKISS is urging watercraft
users and anglers to Clean, Drain, and Dry all gear and
watercraft every time they leave a lake or river. The larvae of
this species are microscopic and could hitchhike in the smallest
amount of water in your watercraft, surviving to populate
another lake. A single clam can create a new population due to
self-fertilization, producing up to 70,000 eggs per year.
Asian clams are found in the pet trade as an aquarium
species, which is another potential pathway for this invasive
species to spread. CKISS wants to remind aquarium owners
to never dump the contents of their aquarium (animals and
plants) into natural places including waterways.
BC’s Family Fishing Weekend
and Father’s Day :)
B.C.’s Family Fishing Weekend is an annual celebration of
fishing that coincides with Father’s Day weekend each year. In
2021, this falls on June 18 - 20. During the three-day event,
residents of Canada (individuals who have lived in Canada for
the preceding 12 months) can go fishing without a licence.
Fish for Free During Father’s Day Weekend - June 18 - 20,
2021
The provincial government waives the requirement for residents
to buy or carry a non-tidal (freshwater) basic licence
during the third weekend in June, and the Friday immediately
prior. The federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada,
which manages tidal fishing, also offers the opportunity to
go saltwater fishing for free. This is a great opportunity to get
together with family and friends and try fishing!
Exceptions: If you plan to fish for species that require a conservation
surcharge stamp (steelhead, Shuswap Lake rainbow trout
and char, Kootenay Lake rainbow trout, white sturgeon, and
salmon in both tidal and non-tidal waters); or angle Classified
Waters (highly productive trout streams; listed as Class I or Class
II waters in the water-specific tables of the fishing regulations)
you are still required to purchase the appropriate licence(s) and
conservation surcharge stamps
