Corporation asked to cover
costs of Lord Mayor’s Show
IT’S barely missed a show in over
eight hundred years but the pandemic
put a temporary halt to the Lord Mayor’s
Show which attracts millions of viewers,
writes Julia Gregory, Local Democracy
Reporter.
The annual event involves 7,000
participants from city workers, liveries
and charities, 140 floats and 20 marching
bands and is held in November.
It traces its origins back to 1215 when
King John gave the City the right to
choose the Mayor, provided they pledged
allegiance to the monarch at Westminster.
The journey from the City to Westminster
grew into a civic procession by the fourteenth
century.
By the early sixteenth century it had
become a day of public celebration and
entertainment.
It was cancelled in the seventeenth
century because of the Plague and last
year due to COVID-19.
The Show has entertained Londoners
for over 800 years. It attracts half a
million spectators as the ornate Lord
Mayor’s State Coach decorated with gold
leaf travels the three miles from Mansion
House to the Royal Courts of Justice on
the Strand and back. Two million people
watch it from home on BBC television.
Last year it lost £210,000 because of
the pandemic. Organisers planned in the
hope that the annual event would go on
last November.
According to a report by the City
Remembrancer Paul Double: “Given the
long history of the Show in continuing to
take place despite disruption caused by
war or other social concerns, the view
was taken last year to continue to plan
and prepare for a Show in 2020 for as
long as possible.”
But as a worsening public health
seemed to loom last autumn, they
cancelled the show in September.
It meant they lost income from the
show and had to dip into reserves which
had built up to cover all its costs.
The City Corporation has been asked to
fund the costs from its Contingency Fund
in case the show has to be cancelled
again.
It has been asked to underwrite the
Lord Mayor’s Show
costs so this year’s show can go on. Once
£30,000 reserves are built up again it will
be paid the surplus income and the costs
the Corporation shoulders to stage the
event.
The show normally earns its income
from the fees participants pay, which
normally cover the costs and make a
small surplus.
However it does not cover the costs
of services such as street cleaning, road
closures, stewarding and security as well
as providing the splendid eighteenth
century Lord Mayor’s Coach, which
is usually displayed at the Museum of
London.
It costs the highways department alone
£99,000.
The extra attractions including an
Illuminated River installation, evening
event at Tower Bridge, and fireworks
display are not likely to happen this year,
which will also affect income.
The Corporation’s policy and resources
committee, finance committee and
general purposes aldermen committee
will discuss the options.
“We must remain
vigilant as City of
London reopens”
WHEN zero COVID-19 deaths were
reported last week, it was a stark reminder
of how far we have come in tackling this
pandemic, writes Catherine McGuinness,
City of London Corporation Policy Chair.
And we are soon set to reach stage four
of the Roadmap.
If the Government decides to go ahead
it will mean the relaxing of all major
restrictions on 21 June. In other words,
we get to invite into our homes as many
friends and family as we like; a freedom
that we have all been waiting for, for a long
time.
However, we must remember that
COVID-19 will remain part of our lives for
the foreseeable future. Hands, face, space
and fresh air must become second nature
to us all. And we may still have to wear
masks in some places but that will surely
feel like the smallest of infringements on
our liberty compared to what we have all
endured over the past year.
It is also important that businesses,
who may see an increase in staff coming
back to offices over the coming weeks,
continue to adhere to the rules to protect
their employees and prevent outbreaks of
the virus. Anybody who walks around the
Square Mile will know that visitors flock to
heritage sites like St Paul’s Cathedral, The
Monument, and Tower Bridge.
Indeed, prior to the pandemic, there
were 7.4 million annual visits to the City’s
creative and heritage attractions.
COVID-19 has clearly had a devastating
impact on the whole capital’s tourism and
cultural sectors.
But we will make sure that the City builds
back better and remains a vibrant and
buzzing destination for residents, workers
and visitors alike.
That’s why we have extended the
deadline for submissions to our COVID
Business Recovery Fund to 30 June 2021.
It offers up to £50 million of support for
SMEs which contribute to the Square Mile’s
vibrancy at street level and which directly
provide services to returning City workers,
visitors and residents.
This pandemic has been a hugely
challenging time for us all, so taking this
next step safely is important. We must
remember to keep up the good work for
a little while longer and continue to follow
the rules in order to keep control of the
virus.
To help us tackle coronavirus in all City
communities we are seeking volunteers
to help us share all the latest public health
messages. To get involved, please call 0207
241 4443 to join our team of City Public
Health Community Champions.
It is important to remember to get tested
if you have symptoms and to test twice
weekly if you must go out to work. If you
test positive for COVID-19 and are told to
self-isolate, but you are not able to work
from home and will lose income as a
result of self-isolating, you may be eligible
for a £500 payment. You can call the City
Corporation on 020 7332 3937 to find out
more. We have a community pharmacy
vaccination site at Boots, 120 Fleet Street
– the Square Mile’s dedicated vaccination
site.
Visit the NHS website or call 119 for the
current eligibility criteria, and information
on how to book.

Mayor launches London Eats campaign
in welcome boost to hospitality sector
SADIQ KHAN has launched the ‘London
Eats’ campaign as indoor hospitality
venues welcome back customers for the
first time since January, writes Joe Talora,
Local Democracy Reporter.
Part of the wider £6 million ‘Let’s Do
London’ campaign aimed at attracting
visitors back to the capital, London Eats will
focus on highlighting the food and drink
offerings in the city.
The Mayor of London kicked off the
campaign in Chinatown where he was
joined by renowned chefs Angela Hartnett
and Monica Galetti.
Mr Khan said: “I’m proud to be launching
London Eats as part of my Let’s Do London
campaign – the biggest domestic tourism
campaign the capital has ever seen.
“The hospitality sector has been one of
the hardest hit by the impact of the pandemic
with too many jobs lost and under threat.
As the Government continues with this
roadmap and more businesses are able to
open up, we are joining with famous chefs,
foodies and hospitality venues to celebrate
our city’s world-renowned industry.
“Together we will be sharing our favourite
places to eat and drink in London and
highlighting the huge range of exciting
events and openings that will be taking
place this summer.
“There is no doubt that our capital has the
greatest food and drink offer in the world,
and I’m proud to be getting the message
out to Londoners and people across the
country that the capital is ready and waiting
to welcome you safely once again.”
Famous Londoners such as Harry
Redknapp and Drag Race UK star Bimini Bon
Boulash will soon be heard making tannoy
announcements on the Tube as they share
their favourite food and drink spots in the
capital.
More information about the London Eats
campaign, including details of upcoming
events, can be found on the Visit London
website. Mr Khan has reminded Londoners
to “enjoy yourself, but do it safely” as
concerns grow over the Indian variant of
Covid-19, after cases were discovered in the
borough of Hackney.
The Mayor of London called for the
Government to offer vaccinations to young
people in areas where the new variant
has been discovered and has encouraged
Londoners to get regular Covid-19 tests.
shuffleboard has found its place in the
Shuffleboard, in which players slide pucks
Reservations are recommended, though
golf bar, Puttshack is all about the future.
They throw all the technology they can into
this golfing experience located right by Bank
The whole space is designed to feel like
an amusement park. Bright colourful lights
fill all the rooms. Dinging noises and music
bounce off all the walls. It’s a sensory overload.
But in all the best ways. You feel fully
immersed in this world of party golf.
And Not only do the Puttshack courses
create a unique vibe, but unlike any other
crazy golf course, they offer a different interactive
game at every hole. That means you
can be working on your Beer Pong skills at
one hole and then test out your pop culture
knowledge at their True or False hole. You
can’t find this anywhere else.
And there’s no need for paper score cards
here – that means there’s no room for
cheating. Before you play a round (and drink
a round), each ball is sanitised and dispensed
with your game profile automatically linked
to that ball. It tracks your hits and lets you
know who is truly winning. That means
there’s more brain power left for hanging
They have created an entirely virtual world
while linking people to different third
Fight off zombies with colleagues, swing
through the forest vines as wind blows in
game (if you haven’t had any of that this
year). It a whole heap of silly fun. And it is a
Do you really miss playing Mario Party, but
don’t want to buy an old Nintendo 64 just for
the occasional fun? Or maybe you desperately
want to play the original PlayStation
Well, the fine folks down at Platform have
created the perfect place to indulge in these
nostalgic games, all the while feasting on
pizza and getting around plenty of pints of
beer.
Book a table for 2-6 people and go wild
on the multiplayer games on offer. They
even have a special esports section in the
back. The fully kitted out space is your stage
to achieve the impossible.
Complete death-defying raids, secure
passionate about bringing indie games &
You don’t need to be a pro to play here. It’s
all just meant to be a whole lot of silly fun.
Pimp Shuei
We didn’t think we needed an underground
martial arts themed gaming bar until we
went down to Pimp Shuei in Farringdon.
The whole space is decked out like an old
school kung fu cinema, filled with original
movie posters, vintage TV screens and retro
arcade games.
But trying to get a go at the arcade games
might not be so easy – they are hot property.
Get in early and take turns with your mates,
before a line starts to form behind you. But
the games are just one of the novelties here.
Get around their Asian-inspired cocktails
like the Pimp’s Cup cocktail and Bangkok
CHAOS KARTS
Now these guys aren’t strictly opening until
August, but we can tell that this is gonna be
one of the best gaming bars in London once
it opens.
Think of it as Mario Karts in real life. Drive
around a racecourse, kitted out with all the
best augmented reality tech.
CHAOS KARTS throws players into this
hectic virtual world, living inside a real-life
video game to race / battle their friends,
family, rivals, colleagues and more.
The karts will be equipped with features
to produce real life sensations and reactions
that will immerse competitors fully into the
ride of their life.
The experience comes complete with
varying circuit designs, pumping music and
most importantly, usable in-kart power-ups
and weapons that will allow players to ‘battle’
right up to the finishing line. The future of
gaming is here folks. Well and truly.
Skylight Rooftop has partnered with Budweiser
Summer. They’ve installed a giant screen on
the rooftop, alongside smaller ones under the
pergola – with its beer-hall style seating. This
option also comes with skyline views, banging
street food and beer aplenty. As well as this,
the team are transforming the Cocktail Cinema
NEW OPENING / Sabine
St Paul’s is getting yet another rooftop
bar – this time on top of one of the Square
Mile’s Leonardo hotels. This botanical rooftop
bar provides the perfect place to escape the
concrete jungle. Stunning views of the cathedral
can be enjoyed from every angle against a
backdrop of vibrant foliage and contemporary
design. And with two outside terraces – one
with a retractable roof for all-weather drinking
and dining – Sabine is a bar for all seasons.
But they are a lot more than just a rooftop bar.
Expect the likes of burrata with white peaches
and pistachios and big Lebanese meat platters.
This is a must-see spot.
or gathering starfish on the beaches of
Cornwall, Eileen Agar transformed the
everyday into the extraordinary.
Her unique style nimbly spanned painting,
collage, photography and sculpture, even
ceremonial hats.
Combining order and chaos, Agar’s work
fuses vivid abstraction with imagery from
classical art, the natural world, and sexual
pleasure. This definitive retrospective charts
her ground-breaking career from the 1920s
to the 1990s.
UAL STUDENTS TAKE OVER VACANT
SHOP UNITS ACROSS THE CITY
An innovative partnership between
businesses in the Square Mile and the
renowned arts school, UAL Wimbledon
Arts College, will see this year’s Graduate
Showcase ‘take over’ a number of empty
retail units.
Starting later this month (21 June)
students from the Performance Arts course
will have their final degree pieces exhibited
in sites across the City of London, in the EC
Partnership’s tower cluster area and also
across Cheapside.
The project activates some of the central
London spaces now vacant as a result of
the COVID pandemic and its impact on
retail and hospitality, providing an attractive
welcome for visitors and workers as they
start to return to London.
It also gives the students a high-profile
and easily accessible platform to showcase
their skills and expertise. The COVID
restrictions have limited the ability for the
students to exhibit at the college both last
year and this year.
The project was developed by the
Cheapside Business Alliance and the EC
Partnership – business collectives working
to enhance their local areas and drive local
economic growth.
LFA BENCHES UNVEILED IN CHEAPSIDE
AND ALDGATE
Nine new public benches have been
unveiled in Cheapside and for the first
time, Aldgate, to mark the 2021 edition of
the London Festival of Architecture’s City
Benches competition with Cheapside
Business Alliance and Aldgate Connect BID.
Designed by an emerging group of international
and interdisciplinary architects and
designers, these new benches will enliven
the public realm across the City with their
bold and imaginative designs, as London
begins to welcome visitors, commuters and
locals back to its streets this summer.
This year’s collection of benches offers
a fresh new take on bringing people back
together post pandemic, providing a safe
and inviting environment for people to
meet again and enjoy the capital with a
creative approach to the festival’s 2021
theme of care.
The designs hope to start a conversation
on how we can better care for another
and our built environment, from telling the
forgotten stories of the local area through
local landmarks and materials to supporting
wellbeing by encouraging interaction and
tackling sustainability by challenging views
on littering and introducing more planting.
WHITECHAPEL GALLERY: Eileen Agar’s retrospective.
In addition to providing much-needed
seating, the benches also encourage
passers-by to pause, rest and once again
make the most of the City.
NEW CITY GIFT CARD
Since the launch of the City Gift Card at the
end of 2020, the scheme has continued to
develop and grow steadily. There are now
around 80 businesses signed up from the
retail, hospitality and leisure sectors across
the City, where the gift card can be used,
and this number continues to increase
week by week.
There are currently around 2,000 cards in
circulation, totalling up to a value just under
£50,000, which will be spent back into the
local economy. As the City continues to
open up and we start to see visitors and
workers returning to the Square Mile, the
City Gift Card makes a great companion.
Are you a business wanting to reward
your staff members? Are you stuck for gift
ideas for your friends and family? The City
Gift Card is your perfect solution. With
participating businesses ranging from
restaurants to bars, from retailers to leisure
activities, from hotels to service providers,
the City Gift Card has it all.
The City Gift Card has been created by
the City of London Corporation, Aldgate
Connect BID, Cheapside Business Alliance,
Fleet Street Quarter and the EC Partnership.
It has been implemented to help and
support local businesses within the City of
London and to promote local spending.
Support the places we all know and love
and purchase a City Gift Card today.
