KATY ISD’S PARTNERS IN EDUCATION
LAUNCHES FIRST EVER FOOD FOR FAMILIES-
SCHOOL’S OUT CAMPAIGN
Katy ISD’s Partners in Education is inviting the community to bring hope
to families who could use some extra help this summer. For the first time
ever, the Food for Families program is expanding to include support for
Katy ISD families in need over the summer too. Partners in Education is
working with all the Katy ISD junior high schools for this summer launch.
The Katy ISD junior high campuses help to identify students for the
program and Partners in Education collects community and corporate
donations. Food for Families - School’s Out will benefit those select
Katy ISD junior high families in need this summer. Those interested in
supporting Food for Families can contribute online or via check, remitted
to “Katy ISD Food for Families” and mailed to Partners in Education, Katy
ISD ESC, 6301 South Stadium Lane, Katy, TX 77494. Food for Families is
a community initiative raising monetary donations to purchase grocery
gift cards for Katy ISD students and their families in need over the
holidays and NOW over the summer. Cards are distributed to students
before school is out with a note of best wishes from our community. In
the 2020 holiday season, Food for Families raised over $60,000. Since its
inception in 2002, this initiative has raised over $300,000 and assisted
more than 6,300 families.
Food for Families, a Katy ISD Partners in Education yearly initiative,
unites our Katy ISD staff and community in support for select students
and their families. To learn more, visit Partners in Education under the
“Community” tab at www.katyisd.org or contact Tammy Stringer, 281-
BOARD OF TRUSTEES LOOK TO MOVE FORWARD
WITH FUTURE KATY ISD VIRTUAL HIGH SCHOOL
Katy Independent School District is preparing to move forward with the
establishment of a virtual high school after trustees discussed and voted
to approve the item at tonight’s Regular Board Meeting, pending future
guidance and funding from the state. The Katy ISD Virtual High School would
be tuition-free and considered a full-time stand-alone virtual high school
campus. The virtual high school criteria and student eligibility include:
• The virtual campus would have its own Texas Education Agency (TEA)
campus code.
• Students would be required to submit an online application during a
designated window of time.
• Students would need to meet the required criteria for acceptance into
the virtual high school.
• Enrollment in the virtual high school would be for one calendar school
year. Students would be able to elect to withdraw and return to their home
campus during the summer and before the start of a new school year.
• Students would graduate from the Katy ISD virtual high school and
would earn a GPA, class rank (top 10%) and quartile rank with their virtual
school cohort.
• Students attending the virtual high school would not be eligible to
participate in their home campus UIL and/or extracurricular activities.
This past April, the District sought input from parents of secondary students
through an interest survey. More than 1,200 responses were received from
parents who expressed an interest in their child(ren) attending a standalone
virtual high school during the 2021-22 school year.
KATY’S NEWEST FILMMAKING AND ANIMATION
CAMP CREATED BY SLHS ALUMNI
Session 2: July 20 th -22 nd : 8:30 AM-3:30 PM
Howdy! Our names are Kai, Cazden, Robbie and Jack, we are four SLHS Alumni
and Texas Film School Graduates. For the past year we have been creating
Katy’s newest and only Animation and Filmmaking camp, Creator Camp! Our
goal is to share with students the wonders of film and animation without the
dullness of note taking and lectures. We designed our 3-day camps so that
students will learn hands-on and in real-time, creating Special effects, Green
Screen effects, Sound effects and loads more. Each day, students will come
home with a new movie they created themselves and on the last day we will
transform a classroom into a mock Oscars Film Festival where your child will
pick their favorite film that they made to be shown on the big screen! We are
running our first camps this summer and we would love to have some support
from the local community to get us off to a good start. Camps are held at Mirus
Academy Katy, 5561 3 rd St, Katy, TX 77493 and Each camper will receive a free
shirt and goody bag. Two Sessions will be held this summer: If your child is
interested in filmmaking or animation please visit our site at CreatorCamp.org.
Fried Chicken
You could make this on National Fried Chicken Day July 6th!
INGREDIENTS:
2 to 3 pounds chicken, cut into pieces
3 cups all-purpose flour
5 tbsp. seasoned salt
3 tbsp. garlic powder
Salt and pepper to taste
4 eggs, beaten
Vegetable oil for frying
DIRECTIONS:
In a shallow plate or bowl, mix the flour, seasoned salt, garlic powder, salt
and pepper. Roll or shake the chicken pieces in the flour mixture and place
on a platter. Then dip each chicken piece in the egg and roll again in flour
mixture.
Heat oil in a deep-fryer or large skillet to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Fry
coated chicken pieces in hot oil for about 5 minutes on each side. Cover
skillet and cook on lower heat for about 10 minutes. Remove cover, turn
up heat and fry for 5 minutes on each side to make chicken crispy. Chicken
is done when it is no longer pink inside and its juices run clear. Drain fried
chicken on paper towels and keep warm in oven until ready to serve.
JULY IS NATIONAL ICE CREAM MONTH
In 1984, President Ronald Reagan designated July as National Ice Cream
Month and the third Sunday of the month as National Ice Cream Day.
He recognized ice cream as a fun and nutritious food that is enjoyed by
over 90 percent of the nation’s population. In the proclamation, President
Reagan called for all people of the United States to observe these events
with “appropriate ceremonies and activities.” The International Ice Cream
Association (IICA) encourages retailers and consumers to celebrate
July as National Ice Cream Month. About 10.3 percent of all the milk
produced by U.S. dairy farmers is used to produce ice cream, contributing
significantly to the economic well-being of the nation’s dairy industry.
BASIC GRILL TIPS
1. Always grill in a well-ventilated area away from shrubs, buildings and
overhangs such as awnings or patio umbrellas.
2. Never leave a lighted grill unattended.
3. Keep young children and animals away from the grill.
4. Wait until the charcoals begin to turn white before you start to grill
(approximately 40 minutes).
5. Never use kerosene or gasoline to start a charcoal fire in the grill. Avoid
using chemical starters or chemically treated briquettes as well, as they
will affect the taste of your food.
6. To start a fire, pile the briquettes in a pyramid shape. Once hot, however,
they may be distributed in a single layer across the grill.
7. Place the rack of the grill at least five inches above the coals.
8. Always have a pair of fire-resistant cooking mitts handy and use longhandled
tongs while cooking.
9. Fire flare-ups can be avoided by raising the height of the grill rack or
closing the vents of a covered grill. A spray bottle filled with water is also
helpful to have around. Gas- or electric-grill flare-ups can be controlled
by lowering the heat thermostat.
10. To make a charcoal grill hotter, either move the coals together,
open the grill vents partially if closed, lower the height of the grill rack
or add more dry briquettes to the fire. Never add briquettes that are
precoated with a fire-starter fluid to the existing hot coals.
11. Try not to turn fish fillets on the grill more than once, as they are
delicate and may fall apart.
12. Most important, don’t be afraid and have fun while you’re grilling. You
will be a pro by summer’s end.
GARDEN TIPS FOR JULY
• Plant fall flowering annuals where your spring annuals have bloomed
out. Set our seeds like zinnia, marigold, cosmos, petunia and portulaca so
you’ll have color until frost. Don’t let seedlings dry out.
• In summer, prune roses to keep them in shape. Continue black spot and
insect treatments. Water 2” once per week.
• Remove spent crepe myrtle flowers to prolong bloom production.
• Weeds rob plants of valuable water, nutrients--remove them.
• Great sun/heat-lovers include coral honeysuckle, coreopsis, lantana,
oleanders and hamelia.
• Fertilize flowers lightly, if at all; too hot for heavy feedings.
• Water your lawn longer but less frequent. Deep water of about 2 - 3” per
week forces plant roots to grow down, instead of sideways into sunbaked
upper soil levels. Use a bowl in your yard to measure during waterings.
