PET SAFETY IN THE SUMMER
Every summer, veterinary clinics can set calendars by the number of
heat related emergencies seen. The variety of symptoms runs from
dehydration, to heat exhaustion to shock to even death.
In many areas of the country, temperatures reach the hundred-degree
mark on a daily basis and heat stroke is a common occurrence. Regular
as clockwork, dogs are brought in because the owner was going to run
into the store for just a minute, got to talking to someone and thirty
minutes or more pass. In just minutes, a closed car can reach temps of
120-140 F. A common misconception is that a cracked window is going
to make a difference. Take the test yourself. Let the dog out of the car,
roll down the window 2 inches and YOU set in there for 30 or so minutes
with the engine off. Always remember, you have the option of getting
out, your dog doesn’t.
Another common problem seen with dogs in the summer, are the
owners that like to let their dogs ride in the back of a truck. The number of
instances where dogs have fallen out or been dragged behind a vehicle
are staggering. If the results of falling out at 70 MPH weren’t enough, get
a piece of sheet metal, set it out in the yard on a hot, sunshiny day and lay
on it for several hours. Rolling every once in a while to get the full effect
of course. Burns to skin and the pads of feet are very common in dogs left
to ride shotgun.
Animals tied up to trees, trailers and posts are also high risk. In this
scenario, dogs are not the only ones at risk. Owners often tie up horses,
goats, lambs, ponies and all types of livestock never making sure that
there is nothing the pet can get tangled up on. Never realizing, tangled
ropes or chains make it impossible to reach shade or water.
The natural tendencies of cats are to be self-sufficient. As long as they
have shade and a fresh water supply, they can take care of themselves.
It is when owners want to take them places or try to put them in cages
outside, problems occur. There are many who will scoff at the idea of
having cats in cages, don’t, it happens.
Make sure if your pet is outside in the summer heat that there is plenty
of shade and water!
NATIONAL CELL PHONE
COURTESY MONTH
National Cell Phone Courtesy Month during July encourages us to
evaluate our cellular habits and consider others before we reach for
our phone. Our phones have become an integral part of our lives. We
schedule events organize shopping lists order birthday presents and
communicate all from this one, small device. Do we even make a phone
call any more?
Phone courtesy has always been in fashion, but when they became
smart, it seems we lost a few brain cells. National Cell Phone Courtesy
Month strives to bring polite phone usage back in style.
DOS AND DON’TS
Silent the phone whenever you’re spending time with anyone. That
includes work, a meal, meeting or with family. If you are attending a
performance of any kind, turn the phone off. There are exceptions to this
rule for medical professionals or other expectant emergency situations.
Hidden phones are forgotten phones. We pay attention to the people
in the room, the performance or the meeting. It’s also a signal to the
people we are with that they are important to us.
Step away if you do need to take a call. No one needs to hear your
conversation while trying to enjoy a meal for two.
Shhh. Monitor the volume of your voice. Even when you step away,
voices carry.
Pause before sending emails, texts or social media posts. Consider
the content, especially if it is posted in haste. Ask yourself the following
questions. Sometimes just the need to ask will be all the answer you need
before deleting the comment or text: Will I regret sending this later? Am I
angry? Will this hurt someone? Is this appropriate? Will this affect my job
or relationship?
Don’t use your phone and drive. Many states prohibit cellular use or
limit it to hands-free only. Any message can wait until you arrive at your
destination. If it truly is urgent, pull to a safe stopping area to receive the
message or call.
Don’t let your mobile device become a social hindrance. We often
look to our phone for social engagement when we don’t know what else
to do. Meet new people when you are in a new circle of people and begin
networking with the people near you. Expand your social circle face to
face and broaden the world around you.
Our phones are tools. They shouldn’t replace every social context in
our lives. Practice a little courtesy and gain improved relationships
everywhere you go. Encourage your friends and families to join you
throughout the month.
KATY’S NEWEST FILMMAKING AND ANIMATION
CAMP CREATED BY SLHS ALUMNI
Session 2: July 20 th -22 nd : 8:30 AM-3:30 PM
Howdy! Our names are Kai, Cazden, Robbie and Jack, we are four SLHS Alumni
and Texas Film School Graduates. For the past year we have been creating
Katy’s newest and only Animation and Filmmaking camp, Creator Camp! Our
goal is to share with students the wonders of film and animation without the
dullness of note taking and lectures. We designed our 3-day camps so that
students will learn hands-on and in real-time, creating Special effects, Green
Screen effects, Sound effects and loads more. Each day, students will come
home with a new movie they created themselves and on the last day we will
transform a classroom into a mock Oscars Film Festival where your child will
pick their favorite film that they made to be shown on the big screen! We are
running our first camps this summer and we would love to have some support
from the local community to get us off to a good start. Camps are held at Mirus
Academy Katy, 5561 3 rd St, Katy, TX 77493 and Each camper will receive a free
shirt and goody bag. Two Sessions will be held this summer: If your child is
interested in filmmaking or animation please visit our site at CreatorCamp.org.
PLAYING IT SAFE ON VACATION
With headlines reporting attacks against tourists becoming more and
more common, vacationers are on the alert.
DON’T LET A FEW CRIMINALS RUIN YOUR VACATION - By taking a
few precautions and staying alert, you can avoid spending part of your
holiday filing a report at an exotic police station.
BEFORE YOU GO, CALL AHEAD - While deadbolts and peepholes
are standard in motel rooms these days, safety awareness on the part
of hotel management varies widely, so it’s worth calling ahead to ask
specific questions.
LOOK FOR ROOMS THAT OPEN ONTO AN INTERIOR HALLWAY,
RATHER THAN TO THE OUTSIDE - While it’s easier to unload the car
when it’s parked right outside the door, a room that opens directly onto
parking makes it easier for thieves to monitor your comings and goings
and to get into your room when you drive off for the day.
DON’T PACK VALUABLES IN BAGGAGE YOU PLAN TO CHECK. - Your bags
will pass through a lot of unsupervised hands on its cross-country flight, so
keep your jewelry, money and travelers checks close at hand in a carry-on
bag. And there’s always the chance that your baggage may not keep up with
you, so pack medications and prescriptions in your carry-on bags.
AIRPORT SAFETY - Watch your bags! Baggage theft at airports is on
the rise and half of the bags stolen are those left unattended. Thieves
know that carry-on bags are where people carry their valuables and cash.
Outside the airport, too and anywhere on the road, never leave your bags
unattended for a second, especially in Europe and Asia. Use teamwork.
Have one family member-a teenager or adult-anchor the bags and the
younger kids while an adult goes off to get directions or a cab.
WATCH YOUR POCKETS - People bumping into you could very well be
pickpockets and people asking you questions could be diverting your
attention while an accomplice grabs your bag. This advice applies in
spades to tourist attractions and public transportation, as well. Consider
purchasing a money belt or money bag that you wear inside your
clothing and using it. Carry in your pockets only enough cash for a day
and only one credit card.
ON THE ROAD WITH YOUR RENTAL CAR - When you pick up your car
rental, ask which parts of town to stay away from. Staying away from
high-crime parts of town could be the most important safeguard you can
take. It’s all too easy to inadvertently drive into bad neighborhoods when
you’re in a strange city, but with a little foresight and a decent map, it’s
just as easy to avoid them.
DON’T LOOK LIKE A TOURIST - Tuck the Disneyland bags and travel
guides discreetly away in the trunk when you’re away from your car.
It doesn’t hurt to leave a local paper in plain sight to further enhance
the illusion that you’re one of the locals. Cars have been broken into for
jackets and shopping bags.
HOTEL SAFETY - Know where the emergency exit is in case of fire.
SHOW YOUR CHILDREN HOW TO CALL THE FRONT DESK. - While
they may know how to dial 911 in case of emergency at home, unless
you tell them, they won’t know to dial 9 for an outside line or to dial 0 for
the hotel receptionist.
OUT AND ABOUT - ID YOUR KIDS - On an index card, write each child’s
name, your name and hotel address and phone number, as well as the
phone number of a close friend or relative back home. Always have a
recent, clear photo of your child with you. If you do get separated, the
authorities will want an up-to-date picture.
YOU DON’T NEED A WALLET FULL OF CREDIT CARDS WHEN YOU
TRAVEL - Bring only what you need-two should be enough-and leave
copies of the front and back of each card and any other important
documents you are carrying with a friend or close relative. If they are lost
or stolen, you’ll have easy access to the necessary information. Also leave
a list of your travelers checks, by number. A member of the party who’s
not carrying the credit cards and travelers checks should also carry a copy
of this list. And consider having Mom carry one credit card and Dad carry
the other.
the best places to camp in Texas. Here, you and your family can enjoy
geocaching, birding, and more. There’s even a cliff-diving experience
to be had at the Devil’s Waterhole area of the lake. There are 22 cabins
BIG THICKET
NATIONAL PRESERVE
#2
If you love nature, then you absolutely
must come to see this place!
It is popular with visitors who enjoy
a variety of outdoor pursuits, including mountain biking, hiking, canoeing,
and horseback riding. The area is known as “the biological
crossroads of North America,” being a transitional zone where deciduous
forests, pine savannas, swamps, plains, and sandhills meet.
There are plenty of primitive campsites to choose from spread out
among the cypress-lined bayous and longleaf pine forests.
COLORADO
BEND STATE PARK
#3
One of the primary outdoor attractions
in the state and provides
visitors with the perfect blend of
outdoor fun activities and mind-blowing views. There are drive-up
campsites, primitive sites, and backpack sites all available in this
stunning setting. The hike-in and drive-up sites all have water nearby
but no hookups. Perhaps the highlight of this location is spectacular
Gorman Falls, where water cascades down 65 feet into a fern-shrouded
grotto. On hot summer days, you can cool off in one of the many
pretty swimming holes. Ample opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors
from paddling the river, fishing, mountain biking, and hiking
around 35 miles of trails. While you’re here, why not get down and
dirty and take a guided cavern tour?
BIG BEND
NATIONAL PARK
#4
One of the best places for camping
in Texas! Take the Ross Maxell Scenic Drive to see the ruins of Sam
Nail Ranch. Spectacular limestone canyon of Santa Elena, carved
over millennia by the Rio Grande. Pay a visit to historical Langford
Hot Springs, where you can see the foundations of an old bathhouse.
Big Bend extends for 114 miles along the Rio Grande and offers visitors
the best primitive and roadside camping options in the entire
state of Texas. Experienced backpackers will relish the challenge of
tough hiking trails that ascend to almost 8,000 feet, where incredible
panoramic vistas can be enjoyed in total isolation. Families will love
the dinosaur fossil experience. You can take a canoe or kayak and
go paddling down the Rio Grande through Mariscal and St Helena
Canyons, taking in some of the most beautiful, memorable views of
nature at its best in the whole of the state.
#5
ENCHANTED
ROCK
The area is probably most well-known for its colossal piece of pink
granite rock, which is one of the largest known natural rock formations
in the U.S. The area has almost 11 miles of hiking trails (although
biking is not permitted.) You can even take a midnight hike
to see the incredible display of brilliant stars against the velvet-black
summer sky without the interference of urban light pollution. Experienced
rock climbers will find a challenge in scaling the pink granite
cliff faces here, and there’s plenty of desert wildlife for the kids to spot
too. There are 35 walk-in campsites here, all of which are equipped
with picnic tables, grills, water, tent pads, fire rings, and restrooms
with showers. If you prefer to keep things super-basic, there are 20
primitive, hike-in campsites scattered around Moss Lake and Walnut
Springs, accessible via a one to three-mile hike across rugged terrain.
There’s also a group primitive campground that will take 75 people.
The site has a private entrance and composting toilets but no water.
GARNER STATE PARK
Garner State Park is a great place to
visit for a swim or hike, or to enjoy
a relaxing weekend. With 2.9 miles
of Frio River winding through 1,774
acres of scenic Hill Country terrain, the park offers lots to see and do!
Swim in the Frio River or float its waters on an inner tube, operate
a paddle boat, and hike 16 miles of scenic trails. You can also camp,
study nature, picnic, canoe, fish, play miniature golf, geocache and
ride bikes. Overnight visitors can stay in screened shelters, cabins
or campsites. Large groups can rent the screened shelter or group
campsite. The park’s concessionaire sells meals and snacks during
the busy season, and rents the pavilion in the off season. Since the
1940s, young folks (and the young at heart) have been gathering at
the park’s concession building on summer evenings for a jukebox
dance. They still do so today. Visitors can rent paddle boats, kayaks
and inner tubes, as well as tables, barbecue pits, heaters and fans.
The park’s concessionaire operates a tube shuttle and putt-putt golf
course during busy seasons. Rent a small locker near the boathouse
for stashing your valuables. For more information, visit Garner State
Park Concessions.
Fried Chicken
You could make this on National Fried Chicken Day July 6th!
INGREDIENTS:
2 to 3 pounds chicken, cut into pieces
3 cups all-purpose flour
5 tbsp. seasoned salt
3 tbsp. garlic powder
Salt and pepper to taste
4 eggs, beaten
Vegetable oil for frying
DIRECTIONS:
In a shallow plate or bowl, mix the flour, seasoned salt, garlic powder, salt
and pepper. Roll or shake the chicken pieces in the flour mixture and place
on a platter. Then dip each chicken piece in the egg and roll again in flour
mixture.
Heat oil in a deep-fryer or large skillet to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Fry
coated chicken pieces in hot oil for about 5 minutes on each side. Cover
skillet and cook on lower heat for about 10 minutes. Remove cover, turn
up heat and fry for 5 minutes on each side to make chicken crispy. Chicken
is done when it is no longer pink inside and its juices run clear. Drain fried
chicken on paper towels and keep warm in oven until ready to serve.
JULY IS NATIONAL ICE CREAM MONTH
In 1984, President Ronald Reagan designated July as National Ice Cream
Month and the third Sunday of the month as National Ice Cream Day.
He recognized ice cream as a fun and nutritious food that is enjoyed by
over 90 percent of the nation’s population. In the proclamation, President
Reagan called for all people of the United States to observe these events
with “appropriate ceremonies and activities.” The International Ice Cream
Association (IICA) encourages retailers and consumers to celebrate
July as National Ice Cream Month. About 10.3 percent of all the milk
produced by U.S. dairy farmers is used to produce ice cream, contributing
significantly to the economic well-being of the nation’s dairy industry.
BASIC GRILL TIPS
1. Always grill in a well-ventilated area away from shrubs, buildings and
overhangs such as awnings or patio umbrellas.
2. Never leave a lighted grill unattended.
3. Keep young children and animals away from the grill.
4. Wait until the charcoals begin to turn white before you start to grill
(approximately 40 minutes).
5. Never use kerosene or gasoline to start a charcoal fire in the grill. Avoid
using chemical starters or chemically treated briquettes as well, as they
will affect the taste of your food.
6. To start a fire, pile the briquettes in a pyramid shape. Once hot, however,
they may be distributed in a single layer across the grill.
7. Place the rack of the grill at least five inches above the coals.
8. Always have a pair of fire-resistant cooking mitts handy and use longhandled
tongs while cooking.
9. Fire flare-ups can be avoided by raising the height of the grill rack or
closing the vents of a covered grill. A spray bottle filled with water is also
helpful to have around. Gas- or electric-grill flare-ups can be controlled
by lowering the heat thermostat.
10. To make a charcoal grill hotter, either move the coals together,
open the grill vents partially if closed, lower the height of the grill rack
or add more dry briquettes to the fire. Never add briquettes that are
precoated with a fire-starter fluid to the existing hot coals.
11. Try not to turn fish fillets on the grill more than once, as they are
delicate and may fall apart.
12. Most important, don’t be afraid and have fun while you’re grilling. You
will be a pro by summer’s end.
GARDEN TIPS FOR JULY
• Plant fall flowering annuals where your spring annuals have bloomed
out. Set our seeds like zinnia, marigold, cosmos, petunia and portulaca so
you’ll have color until frost. Don’t let seedlings dry out.
• In summer, prune roses to keep them in shape. Continue black spot and
insect treatments. Water 2” once per week.
• Remove spent crepe myrtle flowers to prolong bloom production.
• Weeds rob plants of valuable water, nutrients--remove them.
• Great sun/heat-lovers include coral honeysuckle, coreopsis, lantana,
oleanders and hamelia.
• Fertilize flowers lightly, if at all; too hot for heavy feedings.
• Water your lawn longer but less frequent. Deep water of about 2 - 3” per
week forces plant roots to grow down, instead of sideways into sunbaked
upper soil levels. Use a bowl in your yard to measure during waterings.
