Held at the KatherineResearch Station, we had 17 participants attendingfrom Central Australia, Katherineand the Douglas Daly regions. Presented byPeter Smith from Irrigation Australia, the twoday course covered a range of topics from introductionto centre pivot and lateral movemachines, financial and planning and designconsiderations, performance evaluation,sprinkler packages, operational issues andmaintenance of centre pivot and lateral moveirrigators.Grant Stuart from Irrigation ComponentsAustralia presented the practical elementof the course. Grant demonstrated differentsprinkler types for different crops and situationsas well as design and maintenance ofthese sprinklers. The Australian TaxationOffice (ATO) has shared their top 4 taxtips for people working in the agriculturalindustry to help them get it right this taxtime.provide a sufficient degree of protectionagainst that risk, for example, a cattlefarmer can claim gloves and steel-cappedboots. You can’t claim a deduction forbuying or cleaning conventional clothingworn at work, for example track pants,jeans or jackets.411. Car expenses – You can claim thecost of using your car when you drive betweenseparate jobs on the same day, forexample driving from your first job as afruit picker to your second job in the canefields. You can’t however, claim a deductionfor the cost of normal trips betweenyour home and work.2. Travel expenses – You can claim adeduction for the cost of travelling overnight,for example carting cattle longdistances. This includes the cost of yourmeals, accommodation, fares and incidentalexpenses. You can’t claim a deductionfor travel costs incurred looking forwork or travelling to a new job.3. Clothing, footwear and laundry expenses–You can claim clothing and footwearyou wear to protect yourself fromyour income-earning activities or the environmentin which you carry them out.
