– the Listening Post.
A self-powered audio sign,
the Listening Post delivers
quality audio to your indoor
and outdoor projects just
by turning its handle,
adding depth and a sense
of personal connection to
the storyteller.
Many visitors prefer to listen, rather than read.
By including an audio aspect to your interpretive
signage you will ensure all visitors to your site are
engaged. Audio signs add an immersive layer to
interpretive sites and can either stand alone to
deliver stories or compliment existing signage.
Introducing sound and voice gives greater
authenticity to the stories we share - imagine
trying to place your visitors into the story by
describing the sound of a kookaburra laughing, or
the waves crashing on the shoreline. Sometimes
words alone just aren’t enough.
Using the Listening Post enables you to share
your story in multiple different languages, and
opens up your stories to visitors who may have
low vision or reading difficulties, ensuring your
interpretive site is accessible to all visitors.

The Listening Post provides an
immersive layer to the interpretive
experience. It captures the
essence of story telling through
the audio medium. It is this
advantage of audio that was key in
the Listening Posts development.

The Listening Post is a
versatile self-powered and
self-contained unit with
endless potential. An audio
sign that can be used virtually
anywhere, whether it be
interior or exterior.
With sustainability at the
forefront of its design, the
Listening Post’s audio tracks
can be updated easily without
altering the unit in anyway. It
is completely self-sufficient
and there are no costly
considerations around
connection to power or power
outages becoming a problem.
It can be activated at anytime
of the day and is not reliant on
the sun or other factors.
The benefits of audio are
endless. One of the main
advantages is the increased
audience reach. Not only is
audio a more engaging
medium, it provides the
opportunity to record stories
in different languages.
The Listening Post has been
installed for years in harsh
exterior environments. You
can visit them at both
Rottnest Island and Alkimos,
where they have stood the
test of time.

The Listening Post
You can customise your Listening
Post to fit within its surrounding
environment, or to match the rest of
your signage family.
There’s room to display information that supports the
story - such as an introductory paragraph, graphics
or imagery - which also helps to tell your story.

Your Listening Post can be built into its own custom
designed housing to meet unique requirements – the
sky is the limit!
The audio sign uses two standard graphic panels as
displayed to the right. The top panel (1) is used to list
the tracks, whilst the bottom panel (2) is dedicated to
the operating instructions enabling a better user
experience.

The Listening Post Signature panels
give you the option to further customise
your audio sign. The Signature panels
provide flexibility and can be used as a
second graphic panel.
The side panels can be used as Signature panels which
allow for further customisation of the Listening Post to
align with your brand or environment.

Get to know the
Listening Post
Easy to Use Low Maintenance Ample Storage Space Generous Track Length Effortless Updatability Customisable
The Listening Post is simple
to use – select the track, turn
the handle until the track
plays and you can listen to
your heart’s content. There’s
no need to run up the power
bill, as the Listening Post is
powered by an easy-to-use
hand-crank dynamo that
brings your audio to life
– now that’s sustainable!
Intuitive prompts help make
operation and updates
stress free and easy for
anyone to follow.
Holds up to 8 separate
audio tracks (16MB in total)
and you can access track
statistics to learn which
tracks are most listened to.
Maximum individual track
length is approximately 1
minute and 50 seconds. We
have determined this to be
the optimal track length at an
accessible volume. Keep in
mind – the higher the volume,
the more power is needed to
play the track, which reduces
the track length.
You can easily update tracks
yourself using the
accompanying USB dongle
and the Listening Post
accepts .MP3 audio files.
The USB dongle can also
be used to control the
volume, so that it perfectly
suits the surrounding
environment (and for peace
of mind – visitors will not be
able to adjust the volume
without the dongle, so you
can be rest assured your
audio volume stays set to
what works best).

Finishing Options
The Listening Post has a
powdercoated finish, giving
the audio sign a durable,
long-lasting lifespan.
Durable Environment Flexible
The Listening Post can be used in
both exterior and interior
environments. They need to be able
to withstand harsh weather
conditions. Powdercoating ensures
that the Listening Post is a durable
option that will survive a range of
environmental conditions from the
coast to the desert, whilst being
highly resistant to vandalism.
A key driver in the Listening Post’s
fabrication is the environment.
Powdercoating provides
environmental benefits that liquid
finishing products like paint do not,
such as the reduction of solvents into
the atmosphere and the recycling of
unused powder.
There are many powdercoat options
available to suit any environment and
project. We would be pleased to work
with you to determine the best colour
choice for your project and location.

Rottnest Island Audio Signage

Installed since 2015, Publik designed multiple audio
signs, installing them all over Rottnest Island.
The audio signs provided a maintenance free solution
and have run without error even in this harsh coastal
environment with zero maintenance.
This audio sign pictured uses the same materials and
unit that is supplied within the Listening Post.
