in Air Force boot camp, Whorf
worked at radio stations in Cape
Cod and near Philadelphia before
coming to Detroit in 1964 where
he transformed WJR's 15-minute
foreign music program. "Kaleido-
scope," into stories interwoven
with music.
"I told (sportscaster) Paul
Carey 1 had sn idea snd he said.
Go sbead and do it, nobody lis-
tens to the show," " Whorf aaid.
"The next day 1 had to see the
station manager. He said, 'I don't
know what you're doing, but keep
dOing iL The phones sre ringing
off the hook.' "

And a lot of Hollywood's great
performers were on radio. The
"machismo voice" of Steve Wil-
son. editor of the crusading news-
paper on "Big Town." waa Ed-
ward G. Robinson while Clair
Trevor played society editor Lore-
lei Kilboume. Boris Karl off per-
formed in many of the "Inner
Sanctum" myateriaa, and Orson
We I lea was the first to play "The
Shadow, mysterious character
that aids the forces of law and or-
der, (who) ia really Lamont Cran-
ston."
Radio's 'best'
And "some of the beat of radio
was heard" on the "Bob Hope
Show" with singera Judy Gar-
land, Doria Day and Frances
Langford, band member Lea
Brown and the comedian's recog-
nizable theme. "Thanks for the
Memories."
"It's just one man's opinion,
but the greateat comic on the ra-
dio was Jack Benny," said Whorf.
'His timing was unbelievable, his
writers were supreme, and his
cast of supporting characters waa
the best."
And mixed in were a doten quil
shows, "the best by far," accord
ing lo Whorf, being "You Bel
Your Life" where Groucho Marx
would interview contestants and
mil in humor.
While familiea gathered around
the radio to be entertained at
night, daytime programming in-
clude soap operas, 16-minute
ahowa that aired between 10 a.m.
and 4 p.m. Whorf credits Frank
and Anne Hummert with creating
the American soap opera. Prolific
writers, they had nothing less
than 20 hita on the radio.
"The Guiding Light" told the
story of the Rev. Ruthledge, and
"Young Dr. Malone" practiced al
Oaks Medical Center, but "the
quintessential soap of the era was
'The Romance of Helen TrenL' "
A fashion deaigner, Helen "eels
out to prove that because a wom-

be over."

hand and glove, according to
Whorf. People were transfixed lis-

Lowell Thomas, the "dean of
broadcasting" who aigned off with
"So long until tomorrow."

"People panicked, familiea
