"Fargo" may be my least favor
ite of the six films written, pro
duced and directed by brothers
Joel and Ethan Coen But it does
deliver something special: a police
investigator unlike any that has
walked across the screen.
Actress Frances McDormand,
interviewed with the directors in
New York recently, calls Marge
"Midwestern nice." She works
with the people she's interrogat
ing, draws them out with a friendly
"work with roe here," but then
gets tough if they don't treat her
with equal courtesy
"She's never trying to build
herself up as smarter or dumber
than she actually is." McDormand
says. "She's just doing ei
actly what needs to be done nghl
then It's a very Midwestern trait:
you do not expend any energy un
less absolutely necessary, and
then, if it's necessary, you lake
control "
Marge holds the film together
When she s off screen you miss
her. left with a fairly routine murder
mystery laced with quirky
Coen louche*. Marge trails a shady
Brainerd. Minnesota, car deal
er behind in his payment* (William
H Macy) who plots lo have
his wife kidnapped so he can split
the ransom money with thugs-forhire
"Steve Buscemi and Peter
Stormare).
Though you'll never get them to
admit it. this very Midweatern
murder mystery reads like the
-Coens' allerftc reaction to just
about everything popular in Hollywood.

classical composition and almost
painfully slow pacing. The banter
between gunmen that Quentin
Tarantino has lad ua to expect is
now one guy talking to a human
wall Much of the humor here is
based on the characters' accents,
so thickly Scandinavian that the
Coens' former Minnesota neigh
bora will probably be put off.
"Even 'Raising Arixona." about
as innocuous a movie as you can
imagine, offended some people in
Arixona for whatever reason.
Ethan says. "If you're at all spe
cific in terms of region or anything.
some people tend to be of
fended and nothing will stop
them."

cagey when interviewed about
what is real and what fiction You
wonder after awhile if there really
was a case like this at all.

to be more faithful to the real story'*
No. they just wanted a particular
topical reference to Johnny
Carson
And why did they call the mov
ie "Fargo." when virtually all of
the action lakes place in Minnesota*
