Following its successful launch in March 2010, the
St. Moritz Award is to be presented for the second
time in St. Moritz from 18th to 20th March 2011. Now
with a more elaborate surrounding programme,
the event has been extended from two to three
days. A celebrity ski race on the Corviglia will open
the St. Moritz Award 2011 on Friday, 18th March.
Former and current big names from ski racing and
ohter sports will join in a friendly race with award
winners, Honour Committee members, VIP guests,
partners and sponsors of the St. Moritz Award. The
original idea was to go back to the good old times
when St. Moritz was a special place that inspired
outstanding people to make a special effort for a bet-
ter world. The St. Moritz Award is now the result of

”Welcome to St. Moritz, where Heaven is a local call.”
That’s how we were greeted by Hans Wiedemann,
the General Manager of Badrutt’s Palace Hotel, and
truer words were never spoken. Flying over fields
and farms, guided by the magnificent Rhine, we had
the perfect introduction to the beauty of St. Moritz -
the jewel of the Alps.
The Badrutt’s Palace Hotel is known worldwide as
one of the greatest hotels on earth, and I know why.
I have never been so well treated, day after day, by
every member of a hotel staff. Every time I asked
where someplace was, I was answered with an offer
to take me there. We spent eight days at the Badrutt’s
Palace Hotel with six children and four adults. I don’t

think we heard the word “no” the entire time. Each day
we skied from ten till four, and the kids couldn’t wait
to strip off their parkas and go for a nice, long swim,
indoors and out. I loved the pools, the steams, the
sauna, and just relaxing in my room. It was magical.
The Gala presentation of the St. Moritz Award was
the highlight of the trip, and I was so very honored
and proud to share it with my family and friends, old
and new. President Adolf Ogi delivered inspiring remarks,
and one of the greatest living artists, Arnoldo
Pomodoro, created a magnificent original sculpture
to commemorate the event. With all its pomp, the
Gala will not be forgotten. Still, the rest of the week
was also unforgettably beautiful and luxurious,

starting every day with a sumptuous breakfast buf-
fet, and every evening with a lovely tea service, re-
plete with crumpets and tiny cucumber sandwiches.
The skiing was out of this world. We skied in virgin
powder by day and sped down the Corvatsch at night.
We skied on groomed slopes and on the glacier. We
skied in bright sunshine and were nearly blinded by a
blizzard. We took our time on some slopes and raced
down others. We skied at four resorts, and rarely
saw other skiers, thanks to the knowledgeable and
wonderfully good- hearted instructors and Swiss
guides.
Chef Reto Mathis fed us pizza and truffles on Corviglia
Mountain, and at night, we glided on horse-

drawn sleighs through the snowy evening, past
Nietzsche’s home, climbing through the Alpine
woods to a traditional Swiss chalet.
When Alexandra della Porta Rodiani and Maura
Wasescha informed me that I was the first recipient of
the St. Moritz Award, and that the Robert F. Kennedy
Foundation of Europe would receive a grant to ed-
ucate high school students about human rights
and to support our work in Haiti, the Gulf Coast,
Darfur and beyond, I was delighted to accept. Little
did I know that the St. Moritz Award is more than a
prize, it is an experience of hospitality and beauty,
family and friends, that lasts a lifetime. I am truly
grateful.

St. Moritz Award
International award for outstanding work
For many decades St. Moritz has been a favourite
meeting place for international celebrities from the
fields of politics, commerce, sport and culture. The
St. Moritz Award is the first of its kind to honor international
celebrities who use the privileges they enjoy
through their personal fame for the good of others,
by making a significant contribution in the area of
charity and humanitarian aid. The St. Moritz Award
is presented every year in St. Moritz, at a gala ceremony.
This international accolade has been awarded
for the very first time in 2010. The St. Moritz Award
2011 goes to Johann Olav Koss, the former Norwegian
speed skater, multiple Olympic medallist and
world record holder, and the international organisation
founded by him, Right to Play, which helps children
all over the world to gain a new outlook on life
through play and sport. The St. Moritz Award 2011
also goes to the famous tenor José Carreras and his
José Carreras International Leukaemia Foundation,
in the area
of charity and humanitarian aid
which has dedicated its efforts against this blood disease
since the star tenor recovered from it in 1988.
The award is designed by the international artist
Arnaldo Pomodoro. St. Moritz and the Engadine region
have always been a source of inspiration for philanthropy
and helping the less fortunate in society.
In the pristine alpine air, social status and monetary
worth tend to lose their importance: no matter how
wealthy people are, they are very humbled in the
presence of the mighty 4000-metre peaks that encompass
the valley.
Despite the many events, fund-raising initiatives and
award ceremonies that take place in St. Moritz, there
has never been an official award that honors socially
committed celebrities who use their privileged
position to do good in this world. The St. Moritz Award
fills this gap by creating a framework that honors ini-
tiatives by public figures in the field of human rights
and humanitarian projects.

The Honor Committee
The winners are assessed every year through
close collaboration between the organizers of the
St. Moritz Award and the Honor Committee. Winners
of the St. Moritz Award are then invited to join
the Honor Committee and automatically take part in
selecting the nominees for next year’s award.
The Honor Committee is made up of distinguished personalities
who have made a name for themselves internationally
through their commitment to a range of
causes and through personal charitable projects. It
is a great honor for the St. Moritz Award to be able to
welcome these esteemed ladies and gentlemen to the
Honor Committee. The President of the Honor Committee
is the former President of Switzerland, Mr Adolf Ogi.

Dr. h.c. Adolf Ogi
Adolf Ogi is a member of the Swiss
People`s Party (SVP) and was its
President from 1984-1987. He was
a member of the Swiss Parliament
and elected Federal Councillor from
1988-2000. Adolf Ogi was President
of the Swiss Confederation in 1993 and 2000. From 2001-
2007 he was Under-Secretary-General of the United
Nations and Special Adviser to the UN Secretary-General
Kofi Annan and Ban Ki-moon on Sport for Development
and Peace. He is currently active in a number of other
functions including the Advisory of the Swiss Economic
Forum, Honorary Chairman of the Swiss Olympic Association,
Honorary Chairman of the Geneva Centre of
Security Policy, Member of the International Olympic
Truce Committee
Kerry Kennedy
Kerry Kennedys’ life has been devoted
to the vindication of equal justice,
to the promotion and protection of
basic rights, and to the preservation
of the rule of law. She established
the Robert F. Kennedy Center for
Justice and Human Rights in 1988 and she has worked
on diverse human rights issues such as children’s rights,
child labor, disappearances, indigenous land rights, judicial
independence, freedom of expression, ethnic violence,
impunity, and the environment. She has led over
40 human rights delegations across the globe. At a time
of diminished idealism and growing cynicism about public
service, her life and lectures are testaments to the commitment
to the basic values of human rights.
Adriano Galliani
Adriano Galliani was born in July
30th 1944 in Monza. He started
his career in 1975 as businessman
of the company “Elettronica
Industrale” producing instrument
for reaching TV signals and he cre-
ated channels for receiving foreign TV in Italy. In 1982 he
created “Italia 1” and in 1984 “Rete 4”. In 1986 Adriano
Galliani became Managing Director of “A.C. Milan”, a
year later he became Vice President of the “Lega Calcio” .
Adriano Galliani is now Vice Executive President and
Managing Director of “A.C. Milan”, President of “Milan
Entertainment s.r.l.”, President of “Milan Real Estate
S.p.A”., President of “Fondazione Milan Onlus” and
President “di Categoria per la Serie A”.
Arnaldo Pomodoro
He is considered the most important
living Italian sculptor, and his work
has won international appreciation
and fame as well. His works embellish
important cities such as Rome,
Milan, Turin, Copenaghen, Brisbane,
Dublin (in front of Trinity College), Los Angeles, moreover
in Mills College in California, in the “Cortile della
Pigna” in the Vatican Museums, in the major museums
worldwide as well as at the Kremlin and at the United Nations.
He is well known most of all for his unique bronze
spheres, the material he prefers for his works of art,
which “break down” and open in front of the watcher who
looks for the internal mechanism, in a contrast between
the perfect smoothness of the shape and the complexity
hidden inside it. Since 1954 he lives and works in Milan,
near the dock of Porta Ticinese. In 1995 he created the
Arnaldo Pomodoro Foundation dedicated to his work and
to contemporary art.
Carla Fracci
Carla Fracci is the leading Italian
ballerina of the last century, renowned
for the high quality of her
acting. Carla Fracci was born in
Milan. She studied at the La Scala
Ballet School with Vera Volkova and
others, graduating into the company in 1954. At La Scala
she created Juliet in Cranko’s Romeo and Juliet (1958)
and Elvira in Massine’s Don Giovanni (1959). She appeared
with many companies like London Festival Ballet,

Royal Ballet, Stuttgart Ballet and Royal Swedish Ballet.
From 1967 she was principal guest artist of the American
Ballet Theatre. She is renowned for her interpretation
of the romantic roles. Giselle was her greatest success.
She danced it with many great partners like with Rudolf
Nureyev, Vladimir Vasiliev, Mikhail Baryshnikov and Erik
Bruhn. She was director of ballet in Naples 1990-91
and in Verona 1995-97. She is now director of Balletto
dell’Opera di Roma.
Ornella Vanoni
Ornella Vanoni, is one of the most
credited traditional pop singers of
Italy. She started her artistic career
in 1960 as a theatrical actress under
the direction of Giorgio Strehler
in his Piccolo Teatro of Milan. The
folklore and popular songs she reinvented in her recordings
of this period, especially the ones connected with
organized crime, gave her the nickname cantante della
mala (“Underworld Singer”). Owing to the songs “Senza
fi ne” and “Che cosa c’è” written for her by Gino Paoli, her
popularity rose in 1963. In 1976, Vanoni worked with Vinicius
de Moraes and Toquinho releasing the hit “La voglia,
la pazzia, l’incoscienza e l’allegria”. During the 1980s,
she released “Ricetta di donna”, “Uomini”, and “Ti lascio
una canzone” (a duet with Gino Paoli). In addition to her
singing career, Ornella Vanoni was active in other arts,
starring in stage and TV shows, movies. Today, she is still
recording and performing with great success.
Milva
Singer and actress Milva reigned for
decades among the most popular
and far-ranging performers. Born
Maria Ilva Biolcati, at 20 she beat
out more than 7,000 rivals to claim
top honors in an influential talent
showcase, and in 1960 cut her debut single, a cover
of Édith Piaf’s “Milord”. In 1961 Milva won third place at
the influential San Remo Music Festival. In 1962 Milva
headlined 15 Paris’ legendary Olympia Theatre, perform-

ing a set of Piaf songs to rapturous reception. Soon after,
she befriended actor and director Giorgio Strehler, who
nurtured her interest in musical theater and encouraged
the expansion of her repertoire, recommending works
spanning from the Italian resistance movement to Bertolt
Brecht. She remained a remarkably eclectic and adventurous
performer in the years to follow. In 2009 Milva
received the Legion d’Honneur.
Murat Yakin
Swiss football coach, former footballer
and member of the Swiss
national football team. Through
his foundation “Murat Yakin und
Stamm”, he is actively engaged in
providing support to children and
young people in need worldwide, and he is a leading personality
in Swiss sport. During the course of his career he
has received 50 caps for the Swiss national football team.
The St. Moritz Award
The trophy for the St. Moritz Award was created by the
artist Arnaldo Pomodoro. It will be assigned every year
at the St. Moritz Award Night.

Impressions
The first St. Moritz Award was presented at a glam-
orous gala evening held in St. Moritz on Saturday
27 th March 2010. Mary Kerry Kennedy and her broth-
er Christopher Kennedy accepted the St. Moritz
Award from Adolf Ogi, former President of Switzer-
land. Daniele Massaro, a former world champion
football player, accepted the award as ambassador
of the A.C. Milan Foundation. Both winners re-
ceived an award, designed by the international artist
Arnaldo Pomodoro, at the gala evening in Badrutt’s
Palace Hotel in St. Moritz. The popular Italian sing-

er Milva inspired the audience with a gripping performance
of her popular hits. She gave impressive
interpretations of songs by major stars such as
Edith Piaf, Andrew Lloyd Weber and Lucio Dalla,
among others. Around 250 VIP guests attended
the award ceremony in glamorous surroundings.
Some 30 representatives from the global media
were also there to report on the event. The St. Moritz
Award 2010 was a major success and a memorable
evening for our many guests. We hope the Award
2011 will be even more remarkable than the last!

Johann Olav Koss is one of the greatest
winter athletes of all time. The fourtime
Olympic Gold Medalist in speed
skating made world headlines when
he won three Gold Medals at the 1994
Lillehammer Games in the 1’500-,
5’000- and 10’000-metre events. Over
the course of his career, he broke a
total of 11 world records, won three
World All-round Championships, and
won numerous World Cups and National
Championships.
Johann Koss first became involved
with Right To Play – then known as
Olympic Aid – in 1993 when he visited
the African country of Eritrea. He was
profoundly moved by the plight of the
children. At Lillehammer, Johann
Koss donated the prize money from
his 1’500m victory to Olympic Aid and
challenged other athletes to do the
same.
Since Lillehammer, Johann Koss has
dedicated himself to growing Right To
Play into an internationally recognized
non-government organization (NGO)
and a lead in Sport for Development.

Leukaemia FOUNDATION
The Catalan tenor advanced to world star status in the
second half of the 20th century. In 1975, José Carreras
premiere at the Milan Scala in a performance of Ver-
dis’ “Un ballo in maschera” found the attention of con-
ductor Herbert von Karajan who would henceforth
greatly support José Carreras. With his powerful
voice he found attention all over the world as possibly
the World’s most beautiful tenor voice of our age.
Soon, he became a crowd favourite on the big stages
of New York, Buenos Aires and Vienna. In the early
1980’s José Carreras took on roles such as Alvaro in

Giuseppe Verdi’s “La Forza del Destino” which require
an exceptionally dramatic and strong voice.
With his unmistakable voice and awe-inspiring opera
performances he soon found his way to collaborate
with Plàcido Domingo and the late Luciano Pavarotti
in the 90’s up until 2003 in order to form the World’s
most famous singing trio, “The three Tenors”.
José Carreras’ extensive discography includes over
150 recordings, notably 50 complete operas, oratories,
popular and classical recitals.

José Carreras Leukaemia Foundation
After successfully fighting Leukaemia
in 1987/1988, José Carreras dedicated
many of his following performances to
his new effort against Leukaemia. Ultimately,
this resulted in the creation
of his International Leukaemia Foundation
on July 14th 1988, as a proof of
his deep gratitude to both science and
society for the care and affection he
received during his illness.
The Foundation was first established
in Barcelona thanks to the support of
Mr. Carreras’ family and a very prestigious
group of scientists and business
entrepreneurs. The creation of
the Foundation made a great impact
world-wide. Consequently, other José
Carreras Leukaemia Foundations
were created in the United States,
Switzerland and Germany.
The José Carreras Foundations share
a common goal: to achieve that one
day, Leukaemia becomes a totally
curable disease – always and for everyone.
They concentrate their efforts
in four main areas:

1. International Fellowships: The
support to scientific research is one
of the most important priorities of the
José Carreras Leukaemia Foundations
and one of the areas of financing
to which the Foundation has devoted
more resources. The program supports
the development of research
by an ambitious program of annual
scholarships, targeted mainly to
young and promising scientists from
any country in the world. Since 1988,
more than 400 research projects
have been funded and more than 100
grants have been awarded.
2. Support to health care: Another
of the main goals of the Carreras
Foundations is to bring technological
advances in health care closer to
patients. The José Carreras Foundations
provide hospitals, laboratories
and health care centres with new
technology and infrastructure. More
than 40 projects have been awarded.

3. Promotion of bone marrow and
umbilical cord blood transplant:
Bone marrow and cord blood transplant
(the latter basically for paediatric
patients), constitute very good
treatment options for many Leukaemia
patients. The Carreras Foundations
have contributed largely to the
creation and development of transplant
units in cities such as Barcelona,
Munich, Warsaw, etc. They have
also financed the creation of two of
the world’s major cord blood banks
established in Barcelona and Düsseldorf,
targeting each at 45.000 cord
blood units stored and available for
transplantation.
4. Social Services for patients and
their families: Frequently, families
have to move out of their hometown,
region or even country due to a Leukaemia
treatment. The International
Foundation offers free accommodation
near health care centres to low
income patients and their relatives.

Where is our
conscience?
Did you see that? What an awful thing, that child who died of cold! All
these disasters kill so many people, including children in Africa. God,
those looks on their faces. There’s nothing we can do, but at least we
don’t let it get us down. Anyone for rummy? So where is our conscience?
Where is our sense of pity, our compassion? TV has a numbing effect.
Too many tragedies inure us to seeing certain sights – even the most
heart-rending. Still, amid so much selfishness, there are people who
commit their lives to missions in Africa, Haiti or wherever people are in
need. Such need exists even in our own country – and on quite a large
scale. Better not to see, though, better to pass. I just say, “Grim, isn’t it?
So many people sleeping on the streets!” I look the other way. It shocks
me. Anyway, there are volunteers who give a little support, kind souls
who think they can and ought to do something. Some are even famous
– artists, for example. They do a lot to help people dying of hunger,
because they realise how privileged they are. On the other hand, all of
us sometimes eat more than we need.

Acknowledging the honour conferred by the St. Moritz Award, the gift-
ed tenor José Carreras will treat the audience at the gala evening in
Badrutt’s Palace Hotel, St. Moritz, on 19th March 2011, to a selection
sung from his repertoire.
In 1972, Ovation magazine described the voice of a young man making
his debut as Pinkerton in Madame Butterfly at the New York City Opera.
It was "a honeyed lyric tenor, richly colored, clear and true and possessing
a sensual beauty that is quite extraordinary." The young man
with the sensuously beautiful voice was José Carreras.
With his unmistakable voice and awe-inspiring opera performances he
soon found his way to collaborate with Plàcido Domingo and the late
Luciano Pavarotti in the 90’s up until 2003 in order to form the World’s
most famous singing trio, “The three Tenors”. In 1992 José Carreras
was engaged as Musical Director of the memorable Olympic Games
held in Barcelona.
José Carreras’ repertoire includes over sixty operas. Together with
his opera activities, he has given frequent recitals in the world’s most
famous halls - his wide concert repertoire includes over 600 titles of
the most diverse styles ranging from the baroque to contemporary music.
