Johann Olav Koss right to Play Right To Play is the leading international humanitarian and development organization using the trans- formative power of sport and play to build essential skills in children and thereby drive social change in communities affected by war, poverty and disease. Right To Play creates a safe place for children to learn and fosters the hope that is essential for children to envision and realize a better future. Right To Play programs target the most marginalized individuals including girls, persons with disabilities, children affected by HIV and AIDS, street children, former child combatants and refugees. www.righttoplay.com Right To Play has been a pioneer in innovation for social change and has a track record for creating programs that are both sustainable and replicable. Each week, more than 700’000 children take part in regular sport and play activities and a combined total of more than 1 million children attend regular programming and special sports events and festivals. This is made possible by more than 15’000 local Coaches, Teachers and Leaders.
The St. Moritz Award 2011 goes to | Johann Olav Koss and Right To Play Working in both the humanitarian and development context, Right To Play trains local community leaders as Coaches to deliver the programs in 20 countries affected by war, poverty and disease in Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and South America. The programs incorporate a unique methodology that uses sport and play as tools for learning in four development impact areas: 1. Basic Education and Child Development: Right To Play’s sport and play programs foster the physical, cognitive and social development of children to teach important values and life skills. 2. Health Promotion and Disease Prevention: Right To Play’s sport and play programs are used to educate and mobilize communities around national health and disease prevention priorities, including HIV and AIDS, malaria and immunization. 3. Conflict Resolution and Peace Building: Right To Play’s programs are tools for teaching conflict resolution and peace building skills. Participation in regular activities facilitates the healing of communities and reintegration of children affected by war. 4. Community Development and Participation: In order to create change and have a sustainable impact, we work in partnership with local organizations to build community infra- 27 Johann Olav Koss structure through the engagement of local staff and local and international volunteers. A Global Leader in Sport for Development and Peace: Right To Play is committed to every child’s Right To Play and takes an active role to facilitate research and promote advocacy in this area. The aim is to engage and positively influence key decisionmakers from the development, sport, business, media and government sectors to ensure every child benefits from the positive power of sport and play. An International Team of Athlete Ambassadors: Right To Play is supported by an international team of top athletes from more than 40 countries. As role models these athletes inspire children, raise awareness and promote opportunities for funding for Right To Play projects. The Right To Play Athlete Ambassadors include Haile Gebrselassie, Alexander Ovechkin, Aksel Lund Svindal, Anja Pärson, Bernhard Russi, Vreni Schneider, Simone Niggli, Dario Cologna, Viktor Röthlin, among many others. From Sport to Social Innovation: Johann Olav Koss is one of the greatest winter athletes of all time. The fourtime Olympic Gold Medalist in speed skating made world headlines when he won three Gold Medals at the 1994 Lillehammer Games in the 1’500-, 5’000- and 10’000-metre events. Over the course of his career, he broke a total of 11 world records, won three World All-round Championships, and won numerous World Cups and National Championships. Johann Koss first became involved with Right To Play – then known as Olympic Aid – in 1993 when he visited the African country of Eritrea. He was profoundly moved by the plight of the children. At Lillehammer, Johann Koss donated the prize money from his 1’500m victory to Olympic Aid and challenged other athletes to do the same. Since Lillehammer, Johann Koss has dedicated himself to growing Right To Play into an internationally recognized non-government organization (NGO) and a lead in Sport for Development. Sport for Development uses sport and play to enhance the healthy physical and psycho-social development of children and build stronger communities.
