Erwin Aladar Rado (1914-1988)<br />
Order of Australia Medal (AM)<br />
Awarded to Erwin Aladar Rado (founder<br />
of the Melbourne Film Festival) in<br />
January 1976 for service to the film<br />
industry.<br />
Born in Budapest in1914, with<br />
photographic ambitions, Rado arrived<br />
in Australia in 1939 and established<br />
a photographic studio in Camberwell.<br />
In 1950 he joined the Melbourne Film<br />
Society, serving as secretary and a<br />
member of the organising committee<br />
of the Melbourne Film Festival. Rado<br />
was appointed AM in 1976 for his<br />
uncompromising drive in shaping the<br />
Melbourne Film Festival and was an<br />
icon of Melbourne’s cultural life. After<br />
25 years as festival director, he retired<br />
in 1983, since serving on a number<br />
of boards, including Film Victoria. <strong>The</strong><br />
Erwin Rado <strong>The</strong>atre at the offices of the<br />
Melbourne International Film Festival<br />
and the Film Victoria Erwin Rado Award<br />
for best Australian short film are named<br />
in his honour.<br />
