BACK TO SCHOOL
SAFETY CHECKLIST
As summer draws to a close and children start heading back to school,
family life can get pretty hectic. It’s important to remember - and share
with your children - some key tips that will help keep them safe and
healthy throughout the school year.
Getting to School: Whether children walk, ride their bicycle or take the
bus to school, it is vitally important that they and the motorists around
them - take proper safety precautions.
Walkers: Walk on the sidewalk; if there is no sidewalk and you must walk
in the street, walk facing traffic • Before crossing the street, stop and look
left, right and left again to see if cars are coming • Never dart out in front
of a parked car
Parents: Practice walking to school with your child, crossing streets at
crosswalks when available • Never walk while texting or talking on the
phone • Do not walk while using headphones
Bike Riders: Always wear a helmet that is fitted and secured properly
Children need to know the rules of the road: Ride single file on the right
side of the road, come to a complete stop before crossing the street and
walk the bike across • Watch for opening car doors and other hazards
Use hand signals when turning • Wear bright-colored clothing
Bus Riders: Teach children the proper way to get on and off the bus •
Line up 6 feet away from the curb as the bus approaches • If seat belts are
available, buckle up • Wait for the bus to stop completely before standing
• Do not cross in front of the bus if possible or walk at least 10 feet ahead
until you can see the other drivers
Drivers, Share the Road: Don’t block crosswalks • Yield to pedestrians
in crosswalks and take extra care in school zones • Never pass a vehicle
stopped for pedestrians • Never pass a bus loading or unloading children
The area 10 feet around a school bus is the most dangerous for children;
stop far enough back to allow them to safely enter and exit the bus
Teen Drivers: Teens crash most often because they are inexperienced.
They struggle judging gaps in traffic, driving the right speed for
conditions and turning safely, among other things. As your teen becomes
a new driver, learn more about what you can do as a parent to keep them
safe.
NATIONAL BACK TO SCHOOL MONTH
Back to School Month in August gears up parents, teachers, schools and
students gear for education. With shorter days, it’s time to dust off the
backpacks, fill them up and plan for a new school year. Preparing children
for the new year includes everything from supplies, clothes, checkups,
planning schedules and making new friends. Teachers develop their
lesson plans and ready their classrooms for the new, smiling faces.
Despite all the excitement, the expense of going back to school can put a
damper on going back to school. Fill-the-bus events, back-pack programs
and teacher supply initiatives help to fill the gaps. Organizations around
the country pull together to make the first day of school fun every year.
Whether you’re ready or not, friends, activities and books are just around
the corner. Get ready to learn! National Back to School Month has been
observed since the 1960s. The school year has traditionally begun in
the fall and ended in late spring allowing the children of farmers in our
agricultural society to help with planting and harvesting. Though today
most families have moved to a more urban and suburban lifestyle, most
schools in the United States still function on this system. However, a
trend toward a year-round school year is gaining steam.
HOME REMEDIES FOR SUNBURN
Summer’s here, and that means it’s time to head outside and
soak up the sun. But along with the all those hours spent outdoors
during the summer season, there usually comes one
inevitable thing: sunburn. Fortunately for all of us, there are
plenty of household items you can use to cool the burning,
itching, and peeling that come with damage from the sun.
COOL WATER
Sunburn, basically, is inflammation of the skin. One of the
easiest ways to treat inflammation is to cool down the affected
area. An effective way to immediately help sunburn,
even while you’re still outside, is to hop in the water, whether
it’s an ocean, lake, or stream. Dipping in and out throughout
the day can help keep sunburn from worsening. Be wary of
pools, as chlorinated water can irritate the skin more. You
should also avoid directly applying ice. Although it may look
appealing when your skin is burning, it could actually cause
even more damage to your extra-sensitive sunburned skin.
You can also try hopping in the bath to help cool and soothe
your skin.
BAKING SODA AND OATMEAL
Throwing a few heaping tablespoons of baking soda into a
bathtub full of cool water and soaking for about 15 to 20
minutes helps minimize sun damage. Adding a cup of oats to
the bath also soothes irritation and helps the skin retain its
natural moisture. Don’t scrub your skin, either in the bath or
after getting out. Dab yourself dry with a towel — don’t rub.
ALOE VERA
If you don’t have
an aloe vera plant
in your house, you
should get one. The
gel inside this succulent
plant has been
used for centuries
for all sorts of ailments,
from upset
stomachs to kidney
infections. It’s also the sunburn relief most commonly found
over the counter.Breaking off a chunk of the plant and applying
the gel directly to the skin provides immediate, soothing
relief from the sting of minor sunburn. If you can’t get your
hands on a plant, try a 100 percent aloe vera gel (not an aloe-based
lotion or ointment). You can find these gels in most
pharmacies.
CHAMOMILE
TEA
Chamomile tea
can be soothing
to your spirit, but
it can also soothe
your sunburned
skin. Brew the tea
as you normally
would and let it
cool. When it’s
ready, soak a washcloth in it and apply it to the affected area.
If you are allergic to pollen, you shouldn’t use this treatment.
It may cause an allergic reaction in your skin.
VINEGAR
Opinions are mixed about using vinegar for sunburn relief.
Some say adding two cups of vinegar to cool bath water can
help take the sting out of burn, while others say the high
acidity in vinegar only makes things worse. If you haven’t
used the treatment before on smaller, lighter sunburns, it’s
best not to try it for larger, more serious burns.
WEAR LOOSE CLOTHING
As your skin is repairing itself, make sure to wear clothing
that doesn’t stick to your skin. Your skin is your body’s largest
organ, so it’s best to give it some room to breathe as it heals
from a major traumatic episode like sunburn. Natural fibers,
such as cotton or bamboo, make for the best post-sunburn
coverings.
SPECIAL LAWN AERATION
DRINK LOTS OF WATER
As your skin is battling the damage from the sun’s rays, it
needs moisture that it lost during your time out in the sun. If
you aren’t already drinking your eight glasses of water a day,
a nasty sunburn should be reason enough to get you to start
doing so.
DON’T FORGET THE MOISTURIZER
After the initial treatment, you skin will still need some tender
loving care. One of the most important things you can
do to prevent skin from peeling — or at least keep it to a
minimum — is to regularly apply moisturizer to the affected
areas. Use scent- and dye-free moisturizer (marketed for
“sensitive skin”) to keep skin irritation to a minimum.
Stay hydrated, keep cool, and if the sunburn is too painful,
you can take some ibuprofen. You should also make sure
you stay covered up next time you go outside so your sunburn
isn’t exposed to even more sun. Call a doctor if a sunburn
causes you to have a fever or if you are showing signs
of dehydration. And remember, the easiest way to treat sunburn
is to avoid it.
NATIONAL SANDWICH MONTH
August is National Sandwich Month. The basic concept of the sandwich
long predates the Earl of Sandwich, the real-life 18th-century aristocrat
who reportedly loved them, and gave them their modern name. The
ancient Jewish sage Hillel the Elder is said to have wrapped lamb-meat
and bitter herbs between two pieces of matzoh (unleavened bread)
during Passover. Early versions of the “wrap” have also been found in Asia
and Africa. The sandwich grew in popularity among aristocrats in the
18th and 19th centuries. Legend has it they were popularly shared, held
with one hand, during late-night gaming and drinking.
According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, a sandwich must have
at least 35% cooked meat and be no more than 50% bread. The average
American child eats about 1,500 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches
before finishing high school. Astronaut John Young once smuggled a
corned beef sandwich on board a Gemini flight. Submarine sandwiches
are called “hoagies” in Philadelphia and “heroes” in New York. The
Dagwood sandwich was first introduced by Chic Young, creator of the
Blondie strip, who described the sandwich as a “mountainous pile of
dissimilar leftovers.”
SANDWICH HACKS: HOW TO ENJOY NATIONAL SANDWICH MONTH
When making a BLT, weave the bacon together to avoid the bacon from
falling out when you bite into it. Instead of bread or toast, make your
breakfast sandwiches with waffles. Turn your freshly-baked bread over
and slice it on the soft side. That helps prevent squishing the bread.
HOW TO OBSERVE
Try a new sandwich recipe every week and share them on social media!
GARDEN TIPS FOR AUGUST
• Time now to make plans for fall landscaping projects.
• Clean up flowerbeds of fallen foliage, yellowed leaves and dead wood.
Light green leaves may signify lack of iron (chlorosis). Correct with iron
cheleates.
• Cut off old dead foliage on irises. Scratch in a little bone meal around
the roots.
• Prune roses to reshape and groom plants for fall growth.
• Wait until November to plant petunias and pansies.
• Chinch bug damage is obvious now. You will have areas of thin and/
or dead turf where they weren’t brought under control. There is a new
generation going now. This batch causes the most damage. Use Dursban
to stop the damage.
• Until the weather gets back to the 80’s, St. Augustine grass grows slowly.
If you fill in with sod, don’t expect a fast turnaround. The sod may look
like it’s not growing while it puts down roots. You will need to water the
new sod often and deeply to get it started but this also creates a disease
environment. Water early so the sun can dry the turf.
• Now is a good time to work new beds. Till them up, add organic material,
mix it in, then let them cure for a month or so. Add in any amendments
like micro-nutrients. Keep the beds moist so the microorganisms have a
favorable environment.
