“I will remember the deeds of the LORD; yes, I will remember your miracles

of long ago. I will consider all your works and meditate on all your mighty

deeds. Your ways, God, are holy. What god is as great as our God? You are

the God who performs miracles; you display your power among the peoples.”

// Psalm 77:11-14

2020 was a year to remember. Despite all the hardships that 2020 brought, there was also

cause for celebration. 2020 was the 60th anniversary of Youth With a Mission, as well as the 30th

anniversary of Homes of Hope! Through both of these movements, thousands of people have

been impacted with hope and freedom, shelter, and the good news! Join us as we look back over

2020, and beyond, and remember the foundations that brought us to where we are today.

SEAN LAMBERT WITH TRANSLATOR IN

BAJA, MEXICO IN THE EARLY 80’s

“I will remember the deeds of the Lord; yes, I will remember your miracles of

long ago. I will consider all your works and meditate on all your mighty deeds.”

// Psalm 77:11-12

Throughout the Bible, the people of God are exhorted to remember and to reflect on both who God is and on

the work of God in our lives. Remembrance is a vital ingredient and aspect of our faith journey. In Psalms 78, we

read that God’s people had forgotten what He had done and the wonders he had shown them, which ultimately

led them into unbelief and misery. The Scriptures remind us that God is at work even when we go through various

trials and testing. As I look back on 2020, I am so thankful for God’s amazing provision, guidance and sustaining

grace poured out upon the ministry of YWAM San Diego/Baja. He is truly faithful!

I am so grateful to all of our amazing partners and friends, who stood with us through all of the adversity of

2020. Through your generosity, we were able to feed over five thousand families in need who were impacted by

Covid-19, through our Baja Food Relief Initiative. Along with food, we were also able to distribute vital Covid-19

health information and a message of hope as we visited and prayed with these precious families. Perhaps our

biggest test was stopping the Homes of Hope program for seven months. It was agonizing to know that families

who were previously poised to get a new home, were forced to continue to live on dirt and in tiny shacks made

of scrap materials, as they waited for us to be able to start up again. I am pleased to report we are back building

again with smaller teams, using Covid-19 safety protocols! Come join us, the poor are waiting for you. I am also

very encouraged by our strong University of the Nations student turnout in the fall of 2020. We hosted over 100

students in five different courses. We also engaged thousands of people in discipleship and training initiatives

using Zoom, Facebook live and other creative platforms. 2020 also marked the 60th anniversary of Youth With A

Mission (YWAM) and the 30th anniversary of Homes of Hope!

It is good to remember who God is and all His goodness to us, even in years of difficulty. Forgetfulness leads us

into unbelief and misery, but remembrance leads us into new levels of faith and grace for our future. Please join us

throughout the course of these pages as we remember all that God has done. On behalf of all of our dedicated

missionary staff and our board of directors, we want to say thank you for your partnership, prayers, and support in

2020. We also look forward to continued partnership in 2021 and beyond.

Sincerely,

Sean Lambert

60 Years

of YWAM

In June of 1956, Loren Cunningham, a twentyyear-old

student from the United States

received a vision from God while on a trip in

the Bahamas. In the vision, he saw waves of

young people, from all over the world, going

into all the world to preach the gospel. After a

few years, Loren began to take steps towards

establishing this vision, and in 1960 Youth With

A Mission was officially born. They started by

sending short term YWAM teams to the West

Indies, Samoa, Hawaii, Mexico, and Central

America. At the time, this was a revolutionary

concept of missions; it was unheard of to not

only send youth out, but to send them for a

short term trip. Up until that point, the idea of

missions had meant that someone picked up

their life and moved permanently to another

part of the world. Throughout the years,

multiple YWAM locations were established in

different cities, nations, and even continents.

YWAM also founded the University of the

Nations and began to offer various training

programs such as the Discipleship Training

School and other University level courses. As the

vision grew, thousands were mobilized in order

to be equipped to share the gospel through

training, mercy ministries, and evangelism. To

date, YWAM is a global missions movement

with over 18,000 full-time missionaries around

the world, working to make God known.

In February of 2020, we held a conference celebrating 60 years of Youth With

a Mission. It was a beautiful time to remember the past and look forward

to the next 60 years! We had the privilege of hearing from our mission’s

founders, Loren and Darlene Cunningham, as well as various others about

the stories that defined us as a mission. What a privilege it was to come

together as a family with YWAMers from all over the world to remember the

faithfulness of God.

30 Years

of Homes

of Hope

Thirty years ago Maria was doing everything she could

to sustain her family. She had moved with her children

into an old abandoned bus crashed on the side of a

hill. Making the best of a difficult situation, she set up

a cooking area under the hood where the engine had

once been. Things were difficult, but in May of 1990

there was excitement in her neighborhood. A group of

YWAM missionaries from Los Angeles, California, had

traveled to Mexico to build a home for Maria’s neighbor.

She was thrilled for her friend. One of the missionaries

brought his three-year-old daughter, Andrea. A little

three-year-old girl isn’t exactly safe on a construction

site, and her father Sean was focused on leading

the team. Maria saw to it that Andrea was safe and

welcomed her into her makeshift bus home to play with

her children. What Maria couldn’t have known was that

her hospitality sparked something in this young child.

When the project was finished, Andrea approached her

father and asked the question, “Daddy can we build

a home for the bus family too?” This simple question

from a three-year-old had an incredible impact and has

spurred a global movement leading to the construction

of over 7,000 homes in 24 nations. Thirty years ago

Homes of Hope was born, and thanks to Maria’s kind

gift of hospitality, today over 130,000 volunteers have

been inspired to come to give the gift of a home.

BAJA

The Covid-19 pandemic has wreaked havoc on so many things, and

Mexico has not been immune. In April of 2020, the government of

Mexico asked its citizens to shelter at home due to the Covid-19

pandemic. As families were unable to work due to the shelter-athome

orders, many were running out of ways to put food on the

table. Thousands of families were left struggling, and seeing the

great need; we decided to do something! Thanks to the generosity

of many of you who partnered with us, we were able to give out

food boxes to over 5,000 families in need!

In Ensenada, the local government gave us a list of families that

needed food. While wearing masks and practicing social distancing,

we went to the families’ homes and met them at their door, handing

over a box of food and supplies and praying for them. During one

of our outings, we planned to meet up with a man at the end of his

street. Upon arriving, we noticed that he was elderly and using a

cane, limping along as he came to greet us. He couldn’t carry

the box of food, so we helped him back to his house.

As we entered the home to drop the food off

and put the items in their fridge, all that was

inside was a head of lettuce and a half used

jar of mayonnaise. When his wife saw the

box of food, tears filled her eyes. We

prayed with them and

shared that God is

our provider, saying

“God is good,” and the

man beamed, responding,

“No, God is super good!”

BAJA FOOD RELIEF INITIATIVE

The Bucio Matus family received a Home of Hope early

on in 2020. Before the house was built, Marco was living

in despair, at the age of 25, his health was declining

due to diabetes. Overwhelmed, he had no interest in

changing his diet or taking his medicine. He had lost

hold of hope.

When we visited them to bring a box of food, Nuria,

tears in her eyes, shared that receiving a Home of Hope

had truly changed the trajectory of their life. They no

longer took things for granted; hope had sprung up

once again for their future. Marco began to take care

of his health, eating vegetables and even taking the

appropriate medications to regulate his diabetes. The

dignity imparted through a proper home was enough to

spark hope, helping him realize his value and motivating

him to take care of his health!

Due to Covid-19, Marco lost his job at the bakery, but

despite the difficult circumstances, the family was still

in good spirits. Putting to use the counter and the new

stove they were given when they received their home,

Marcos decided to get creative and use his skills to

provide for his family during this difficult time.

Through trial and error and watching YouTube tutorials,

he figured out how to make dough from scratch and

started to make donuts. On the weekends, Nuria goes

out to sell the donuts that Marco makes; through this

they are able to make enough to provide for their

basic needs.

HOPE

Our Hope Zone ministry has been present for

over 11 years in the community of Zona Norte,

downtown Tijuana. What started as a simple

children’s ministry, doing games and classes

in a local park, has grown into a community

center. Families are able to find community, gain

skills, training, and discover more about God’s

purposes for them. 2020 of course brought

challenges with the Covid-19 pandemic and

caused us to reevaluate and seek the Lord for new

strategy as a ministry. In the midst of everything

going on around us, we are celebrating that

we were able to reach new heights of deeper

relationship with some of our families.

As we met with our families one by one on our

property, a deep sense of vulnerability began

to occur. As families began to open up more

about their life and their challenges, they were

gaining an awareness of the presence of God, a

new hope for their now and for their future and

an overall freedom from fear and bondage. We

continue to rejoice that although this season has

looked drastically different than the past, we

have witnessed incredible victories from 2020

that are worth celebrating.

28

29

One of those victories came through the

story of a woman close to our heart named

Maria. She has been connected to Hope

Zone for many years. In the beginning

she would bring her children solely to

drop them off and then she would go

on her way. Back then, Maria was heavily

using drugs and not making the best

decisions for her girls nor for herself. She

later became pregnant with twin boys but

because of her constant drug use, she was

not given custody over the babies when

they were born. For the last year, she has

fought hard to overcome her addictions

and face the hard reality that she needed

to change her life. Recently, she stepped

onto our property with incredible news

and the biggest smile on her face - after

a year of being set free from drugs, she

finally gets to bring her baby boys home!

She went on to share with us that years

ago, she never had an interest in being

a part of our program for herself but now

feels that Hope Zone is a place for her - a

place where she belongs! Maria has now

become a mother figure to many children

near her home who are alone due to their

parents who are abusing drugs. Maria

came to us and asked if we would dedicate

her baby to the Lord as a demonstration

that her family was now marked with a

new future and a new hope.

God is no doubt using Maria and

redeeming her story. After years of

cheering her on to stay clean from drugs

and constantly praying for freedom over

her life, we are celebrating this huge

victory with her as she steps forward

into the new Maria and all that God has

for her. Maria’s story brings us hope:

it reminds us to never stop fighting for

those in bondage, it means standing with

them until we see them set free!

HOMES

Homes of Hope is making a difference all over the world, one family at a time. Each family is

required to buy their own land, then fill out a Homes of Hope application, followed by a site

visit from someone on our family selection team. Once approved, the family helps get the site

ready for the new home and works hand and hand with the volunteers to see the home built.

Each house is gifted to the family and funded by the volunteer group that come to build the

house. We also receive scholarship donations from those who are not able to build but

would like to see a family in need get a home.

HOMES OF HOPE IN 2020

HOMES OF HOPE IMPACTS FAMILIES IN

FIVE KEY AREAS:

• Economic: A debt free home helps leverage families out of

poverty, creating long-term equity.

• Education: Children who come back to a home are three

times more likely to attend school.

• Health: Moving from dirt to a real floor reduces anemia,

diarrhea, and reoccurring respiratory problems.

• Transformed Mindset: Receiving a new home helps

each family see beyond their own poverty and gives

fresh perspective and hope about their future.

• Spiritual: Each family experiences a practical

demonstration of God’s love, hears the good

news of the gospel, receives a Bible and an

invitation to a local church near their home.

While Covid-19 delayed many home builds, 148

families in 8 different nations still received new

homes in 2020!

Over eight years ago, Tonia and her family had

purchased land in Tijuana, but like so many

other families, they couldn’t afford to build

on it. In the meantime, they were living with

someone else when one day the woman kicked

them out. She threw them and their stuff onto

the street with everyone in the community

watching them. They had no choice but to go

to the land they had purchased and create a

makeshift shelter.

“I remember the first night when we arrived;

we didn’t have anything. It was cold, wet, and

windy. Everything got wet, including us. All we

could do was hug each other,” Tonia’s mom,

Araceli recalled. One day, Tonia’s dad Miguel

was bit by an animal, and his hand got so

swollen that he couldn’t work anymore. They

weren’t able to afford anything to eat. Tonia

was going to school then, but she wanted

to help her family, so she told her mom she

would drop out of school to sell gum to help

her family. She cried out to God every night

for help.

Soon after, Araceli contacted YWAM to ask

for help. She explained the situation to them

and showed their makeshift home, made of a

tent with three walls, a fourth wall made of a

curtain, a tarp roof, and no door. When YWAM

said they would build them a house, they all

went outside jumping and screaming for joy!

When they finally received their house, they

couldn’t believe it. As the keys were passed

around after the house was completed, Tonia

shared a letter she had written,

“My heart overflows with joy. Although I have

not had what other little girls have had, I know

this house is forever...Thank you for giving us

something to eat when we were hungry. Thank

you for giving us something to drink when we

were thirsty. And when we were cold, you

covered us with your arms. Thank you for my

house. I am so thankful to my daddy God for

hearing my prayers.”

Because of receiving a home, Tonia didn’t

have to quit school. In fact, she graduated

from 6th grade a few weeks after receiving

her home! Thanks to a generous donor,

Tonia also received a scholarship to pay for

her school fees for high school. When she

began high school, she said, “I think we

can all have success. I think we can all

be extraordinary.”

Tonia has proven her statement true,

yet it has not come without its challenges

for her and her family. She lives in a place

where not many people succeed, and

while there are immense odds

against her, she has persevered.

Tonia has continued toward

the dream God had given

her to be a nurse and to

fulfill her potential and it

all started with a home.

Years after receiving

their Home of Hope,

Tonia is not only the

first in her family to

finish both middle

and high school,

she is currently in

university studying to

be a nurse!

As a young woman, Janet Lambert answered the call in 1967 and committed

her life to serve the Lord in missions. Janet had heard about Youth With a

Mission at church and decided to do a Discipleship Training School with

them in Los Angeles. This launched Janet into a fulfilling life and gave

her the foundational skills she would need as she and her husband Sean

founded the work of YWAM San Diego/ Baja.

Youth with a Mission is committed to teaching and training those who long

to serve. The University of the Nations (UofN) was created as the training

branch of YWAM, to be a multiplier for missions and to equip people to

fulfill the Great Commission and disciple the nations. Today the UofN is a

full-fledged global University with educational centers around the world,

that teach students in almost every modern language.

Investing in people takes time and intentionality. As YWAM San Diego /

Baja, we are passionate about training young people through the University

of the Nations and equipping them to become world changers. Simple

seeds of love and belief can yield incredible fruit down the road. We may

never know the full impact our students will have as they launch out of our

training programs into a world that needs to hear a message of hope.

DISCIPLESHIP BIBLE SCHOOL

The year was 1977, and a group of staff from Youth With

a Mission Los Angeles, traveled down south, across the

border into Baja California to pass out Bibles. Camping

at a KOA campground along the coast, they visited the

surrounding communities to share the word of God. One

of the team members was Janet Lambert; she didn’t

know then that 14 years later in 1991, she would move

to the area with her husband and pioneer the ministry

of YWAM San Diego/ Baja. As YWAM SDB, we had

our humble beginnings in a run-down warehouse near

the beach in Playas de Tijuana. As the ministry grew, in

2001, the need for a larger campus to host teams, staff

and students became apparent.

The search was on for the perfect property that would

fit the ministry’s needs. Sean and Janet began a process

of scouting out the land, looking for a safe place to host

the thousands that would come every year to bless the

poor. On one afternoon, Janet reminded Sean of the

campground where she stayed when passing out Bibles

back in 1979. They decided to visit and were thrilled to

find the campground was up for sale! That campground

is now YWAM San Antonio Del Mar, a property that we

have been developing for the past two decades. One

by one, we build new dorm buildings and classrooms as

the funds are donated, and as each building is finished,

it is filled with the faithful people who come here to

serve with Homes of Hope and to learn as students in

our University of the Nations program.

With 2020 forcing us to shut down many of our

community ministries, including Homes of Hope, we

decided to use that time as a time to invest in our

staff- by encouraging them to join a course through the

University of the Nations. In total, during our 2020 Fall

quarter, we had 35 staff members grow deeper in their

faith and their foundation for the word of God. 30 staff

members participated in our three month Discipleship

Bible School while five staff members began the nine

month Chronological School of Biblical Studies!

Erick and Josefina Ochoa were two of the staff members

who took the Discipleship Bible School. After receiving

a Home of Hope in 2010, they eventually joined staff

after completing a Discipleship Training School and a

Community Development School with us! They now

work with our Homes of Hope family selection team,

ministering to the families as they apply and wait for

a home. Josefina shared about her experience in Bible

School: “I had never read through the whole Bible

before. There was so much I didn’t understand, but

through the classes, I was able to truly see who God is

and what his intentions are, not just for my life but for

the nations.”

Back in 1977 a team of young people came, committed

to sharing the Bible as a foundation for transformation.

They could have never known that three decades later a

new generation of young people would be in that same

place, growing deeper in their understanding of the

Bible so that they can continue to bring transformation

to the communities all around.

DTS STORY OF CONNECTION:

Itaí Peña Armendáriz received a Home of

Hope at the age of 10. After experiencing the

build, he felt a sense of belonging with the

group that came to build for him, and a dream

was planted in his heart to serve and build

more houses in the future. The Home of Hope

was just the beginning of a beautiful journey

with YWAM San Diego/Baja.

After receiving the home, Itai joined our after

school tutoring program “Círculo Andante”

right in his community. As a participant

he spent time learning about God, math,

Spanish, geography, and even history. With

his fellow Circulo Andante participants, Itai

danced a traditional Mexican folk dance at our

25th anniversary celebration of “Homes Of

Hope.” After growing out of Circulo Andante,

Itai joined another one of our local ministries,

called “La Industria” where local boys and

girls would come to the base each week and

play soccer and have devotionals. Itai continued to stay

connected to us, eventually joining an internship program

building the very windows that go into our Homes of

Hope houses.

Thanks to generous donations from our community, Itai was

able to receive a scholarship to be a student in our Photo-

Storytelling Discipleship Training School in September of

2020. Growing in his faith and knowledge of the Lord, He

dedicated his life to God and even got baptized!

Itai shared his experience with YWAM SDB and getting

to know the Lord, “My past was painful. I lived without

purpose and God, but my life has been radically changed.

God has given me new life, he has used everything for

good. Now I recognize that I have a purpose to preach,

to share God and to love my neighbor. Now I recognize

who I am.” It is beautiful to see that throughout the years,

different people and various ministries, God has been

faithfully bringing transformation. It all starts with a seed.

46

47

DTS STORY OF CONNECTION:

Edwin got connected to YWAM SDB through

our Hope Zone ministry in downtown Tijuana.

His family had been coming to the community

center for eight years. Edwin wasn’t involved

until he witnessed the radical transformation

of his father, who left a life of crime to serve

the Lord and be a blessing in his community.

The pull of a criminal lifestyle, drug dealing,

and joining a gang is strong for young men

in downtown Tijuana. And it could have easily

been a reality for Edwin. But he chose a

different path.

A year after joining the youth program, he

came to do a Discipleship Training School

with us in 2020 at our San Antonio Del Mar

campus. It was incredible to see how much

God was doing and had done in his life!

During DTS, he chose to further commit his

life to the Lord with a baptism. Afterwards he

wrote, “The person you see now is the new

me, the real Edwin. I like who I am now.”
