IAN EVATT
The Manager
GOOD EVENING AND WELCOME BACK TO THE UNIVERSITY OF BOLTON STADIUM
FOR OUR SECOND HOME MATCH IN QUICK SUCCESSION FOLLOWING OUR OPENING
DAY SKY BET LEAGUE ONE GAME AGAINST MK DONS.
Tonight we host Barnsley in the
first round of the Carabao Cup and
I’d like to welcome their manager,
Markus Schopp, his staff and the
travelling supporters.
Barnsley are a strong Championship
side who reached the Play-Off semifinals
last season so will provide us
with a good challenge this evening.
We will of course be looking to
progress as far as we can in all the
cup competitions this season as we
want to build up momentum that will
benefit us for our league campaign.
Looking back at Saturday, it was
amazing to finally be playing in front
of crowd once again after such a
long period of absence.
That over 16,000 of you were in
attendance was a sight to behold as
we walked on to the pitch for kick
off. The noise and atmosphere was
extraordinary and it is a memory that
myself, staff and players will cherish
fondly for a very long time.
Seeing the smiles on your faces
and hearing the roar as each goal
went in was spine-tingling and we
look forward to creating many more
memories together over the coming
weeks and months.
Regarding the game, it went as I
expected in terms of possession
which was about 50-50 because
both teams like to keep hold of the
ball and dominate possession.
In terms of chances created, I
thought we edged it but we just
didn’t quite take them, which sounds
a bit crazy as we scored three. The
goals we conceded were soft, which
left a bitter taste in the mouth but this
is something that we will of course
rectify.
I thought it was going to be open,
there was going to be goals in it and
it was who took advantage of the
better opportunities.
As I said, the atmosphere was
fantastic and it lifted our players,
particularly in the last five minutes
where I have no doubt it helped us to
get the equaliser.
It was a game we didn’t deserve to
lose and we got something out of it
which was important.
Thanks for your excellent support.
Ian
Enjoy the game,
WANDERERS SNAP UP
Kachunga
IAN EVATT BOOSTED HIS ATTACKING OPTIONS ON THE EVE OF BOLTON WANDERERS'
RETURN TO SKY BET LEAGUE ONE ACTION BY SIGNING FORMER GERMANY UNDER 21
INTERNATIONAL ELIAS KACHUNGA ON A TWO-YEAR DEAL, SUBJECT TO CLEARANCE.
The 29 year-old had been a summer
target for the Wanderers’ manager
following his departure from
previous club Sheffield Wednesday.
Born in Germany, Kachunga came
through the youth system of Borussia
Monchengladbach and gained
experience with several clubs in his
homeland, including appearances in
44 Bundesliga matches.
He moved to English football in 2016
where he joined Huddersfield Town
initially on loan.
After helping the Terriers win
promotion to the Premier League, the
West Yorkshire outfit paid just over
£1 million to secure his services on a
permanent basis.
He made over 100 appearances for
Town, including 39 in the Premier
League, during his time at the John
Smith’s Stadium.
The versatile frontman, who can play
as a number nine or on either wing,
has been capped at under 19 and
under 21 levels by Germany and also
has represented DR Congo at full
international level.
Speaking to the club’s official
website, Kachunga said: “I’m really
happy and excited to have signed for
Bolton Wanderers.
“I’m a player who puts a lot of
passion in my game and I will work
very hard for this football club.
HE IS VASTLY EXPERIENCED, WELL-EDUCATED AND
HAS PLAYED THE GAME AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL.
“I had really good talks with the
gaffer and Chris (Markham –
Technical Performance Director) and
they explained what their plans for
the club are.
“It’s been a really long time without
supporters in the stadium and I’m
now looking forward to playing in
front of them here at the University of
Bolton Stadium.”
Wanderers Manager Ian Evatt added:
“Elias was one of our primary targets
in the summer but it didn’t quite work
out then.
“Sometimes football’s a funny old
game and opportunities come
around again.
“Elias is a fantastic player with a great
pedigree and is versatile in attack
which gives us the ability to play him
in different ways.
“He is vastly experienced, welleducated
and has played the game
at the highest level.
“We are delighted to have him on
board.”
Polish international defender
Michał Helik enjoyed a successful
first season in English football with
Barnsley in 2020/21, establishing
himself as a regular in the team
with 49 appearances for the Tykes.
Also chipping in with five goals, the
imposing centre back was one of
the key men last term as the South
Yorkshire outfit reached the Sky
Bet Championship play-offs against
many people’s expectations.
Beginning his career with Ruch
Chorzów, Helik went onto sign for
Cracovia in 2017 – one of the City
of Kraków’s two biggest clubs.
Impressing during just over three
years at Stadion Miejski Cracovii, he
earned a move into the English game
with Barnsley in September 2020 –
joining for an undisclosed fee.
One of Bury’s most notable
academy graduates during recent
years, Styles broke through the
youth ranks at Gigg Lane to make
his professional debut for the
Shakers at just 16 years of age.
Going onto make 47 appearances
for the club as a teenager, the
talented midfielder completed a
move to Barnsley in August 2018.
Styles has become a regular in
the team at Barnsley and made an
impressive 50 appearances (5 goals)
last term as the Tykes reached the
Sky Bet Championship Play-Offs.
With a bright future ahead of him, he
will be aiming for another stand-out
campaign in the second tier this time
around.
Recently named as the club’s new
captain, Cauley Woodrow is the
focal point to Barnsley’s attack
and will continue to carry the lead
role under new manager Markus
Schopp. Coming through the youth
ranks at Fulham, he went onto make
66 appearances (12 goals) for the
Cottagers, before a permanent
move to South Yorkshire in July
2019.
Arriving at Oakwell after a successful
loan spell, since his permanent
switch he has made 92 appearances
(30 goals). During his time at Fulham,
the former England U21 international
also had loan spells with Luton Town,
Southend United, Burton Albion, and
Bristol City.
A Foot In
BOTH CAMPS
PROFILING A PLAYER WHO HAS REPRESENTED
BOTH BOLTON WANDERERS AND BARNSLEY.
Ricardo Vaz Tê
Born in Lisbon in October 1986, Ricardo
Jorge Vaz Tê spent time in his native
Portugal playing youth football for Real
Massama and Farense before signing
for Bolton Wanderers in 2003 after
impressing during a trial period with
the club.
Making his debut for Bolton in a 1-1 FA
Cup draw against Tranmere Rovers at
Prenton Park in January 2004, Vaz Tê
would go onto spend over seven years
in BL6. Although he had a brief loan stint
at Hull City in 2007, he made a total
of 78 appearances (7 goals) before
ultimately joining Hibernian in a
permanent deal in January 2011.
Spending the second half
of the 2010/11 season with
the Edinburgh club, the
Portuguese forward
signed for Barnsley in
the summer of 2011.
Spending the first
half of the 2011/12
season at
Oakwell, he was
excellent for the
Tykes and made 24 appearances (12
goals) before completing a January 2012
move to West Ham United.
Vaz Tê spent three years with the
Hammers and made a total of
61 appearances (19 goals) in the
Championship and Premier League.
Sandwiched between spells in Turkey
and China, the forward had a brief
spell with Charlton Athletic where he
made 12 appearances in two and-a-half
months. Now a veteran at the back end
of his career, Vaz Tê is currently playing
for Portuguese Primeira Liga side,
Portimonense.
We have delved into the archives
to come up with some of Bolton
Wanderers’ best performances in
the League Cup in years gone by.
To start with, a seven-goal thriller
against the Villa.
Wanderers had reached the semifinals
of the League Cup and earned
a double-header against Aston Villa
after seeing off Walsall, Gillingham,
Liverpool, and Southampton en route
to the final four.
In his final game before heading
to the African Cup of Nations to
represent Nigeria, Jay Jay Okocha
put in a phenomenal display scoring
two brilliant goals to help Sam
Allardyce’s side to a memorable
victory. Although Villa won the
second leg 2-0 at Villa Park, it wasn’t
enough to stop Bolton reaching the
final.
Giving Football Back to
Small Business
At eBay, we know small business and
football clubs used to be like chips and
gravy, two peas in a pod – a match
made in community heaven.
Ironmongers, ship workers, spring
makers and cobblers, all formed clubs
which decades later are still prospering.
But nowadays, you’d think it was all
eyewatering transfers, Super Leagues
and mega sponsors, detached from the
humble origins of our historic clubs.
That’s why eBay are proud to support
300,000 small businesses who help
power EFL clubs nationwide. We’ll be
donating our advertising space to a lot
of these businesses – on match day
hoardings, around grounds and beyond –
throughout the coming season, to ensure
they can continue to thrive in our local
communities. So, join us in giving your
support to Small Business Power, because
today, they need us more than ever.
30th November 2005 | League Cup Fourth Round | Reebok Stadium
Wanderers battled to an extratime
victory against Championship
side Leicester City at the Reebok
Stadium to reach the Quarter-Finals
of the competition – just 18 months
after finishing as runners-up.
With the score goalless, the
game went to extra time and Sam
Allardyce’s side took the lead just
before the break through Jared
Borgetti. Ricardo Vaz Te added a
second just after the restart, but
Leicester halved the deficit through
Gareth Williams shortly afterwards
to run their Premiership opponents
close.
IT WAS A STRANGE GAME IN MANY WAYS. WE THOUGHT WE HAD IT, WE
THOUGHT WE’D WON IT, AND THEN THEY THOUGHT THEY’D WON IT, BUT WE
ENDED UP SHAKING HANDS WITH A DRAW. THERE’S LOTS OF POSITIVES REALLY,
I SAW GREAT CHARACTER FROM MY PLAYERS AND I THINK AT 2-1 UP WERE
DOMINATING THE GAME AND THEY LOOKED LOW ON ENERGY. BUT, LIKE I SAY
GREAT CHARACTER FROM THE PLAYERS TO COME BACK AND GET A DRAW.
REFLECTS ON
DRAMATIC
OPENING DAY
DRAW AGAINST
MK DONS
Alex Baptiste was in the right place
at the right time to score a last
gasp equalising goal against MK
Dons at the University of Bolton
Stadium, on the opening day of the
Sky Bet League One campaign. The
defender spoke shortly after the
game to give his assessment of an
all action afternoon of football
He said: “I’m happy to have helped
out with the goal, it was carnage of a
first day. There was mistakes, goals
and end to end stuff. I imagine it was
a great game of football for the fans
to watch with a few heart in mouth
moments.
“We thoroughly deserved something
from the game and like I said
anything I can do for the team I’ll try
to do, and I’m happy to have got the
equaliser today.
“The last five minutes it’s started
chucking it down and Kacha (Elias
Kachunga) has done unbelievably
well to cut the ball back when I
thought the ball was going to go out
for a goal kick and I’ve done my best
to miss it (Laughs).”
