Page 2A THE BEACON September 2021 By Tamara Taylor Serendipitous I recently had the opportunity to have supper with my dear friend after a funfilled day of meetings and happenstance. As I strolled toward the restaurant where we planned to meet, I noticed a couple taking their photos in front of the interactive mural of whiskey barrels that Lawrenceburg Main Street had recently installed on the side of the building. Naturally, I offered to take a photo of the Publisher/Editor Tamara M. The southern drawl of their response was captivating. Of course, that led to a plethora of questions. Where are you from? What brought you to the charming town of Lawrenceburg? Have you seen the other murals in town, Hillforest, Aurora, Greendale’s Ridge Avenue, Rising Sun? The couple was from Tupelo, Mississippi. What captivated me most was their enthusiasm for our community and ALL that it has to offer. Shared from an outsider’s perspective. Serendipitous. Just that morning, a wonderful photo crossed my desk of one of the interactive murals in Lawrenceburg. I took the opportunity to call Lawrenceburg Main Street about the photo, and who should answer the phone but Gayle Stephens. That same word, Over 22,000 distribution & growing! Gayle shared that a recent article in the BEACON led to her reconnection with a close friend from college. They had lost touch a “few” years ago (I have no idea if Gayle is age-sensitive, but I am! Read on...) and had recently been searching for each other. The friend found The BEACON’s article about Gayle joining the team at Lawrenceburg Main Street, providing the opportunity for the friends to reconnect. Serendipitous. I first met Gayle about the time she lost touch with her friend. Unbeknownst to both of us, we were both graduates of UC’s College of Design, Art, Architecture, and Planning (DAAP). Graduating from DAAP is like a badge of honor- the intensity of the programs closely resembles the commitment required to earn a degree in medicine. Honestly. But I digress... As I spoke with Gayle, that age-old question kept poking at me. The one that has resulted in new acquaintances growing to become old friends. What brought you back to our community? Why are you here? Gayle’s answer was incredibly similar to so many others- This is home. Ms. Stephens has a history that spans the globe and took her places others only dream of. She turned her passion for fashion design into a career that has taken her to Broadway, the fashion district of New York City, the streets of Paris, and many other locations, all culminating in fifteen years in Hawaii. What I didn’t know about Gayle is that she enjoys creating perfumes and is a master blender/perfumer, an expert in creating perfume compositions. This requires a keen sense of smell and skill and knowledge of a vast variety of fragrances while being able to distinguish each one individually or in combination with others. One has to wonderwhat enchanting fragrances did Gayle encounter during her childhood in Moores Hill that led her down that path? Beyond her fashion career, Ms. Stephens is a licensed massage therapist and certified aromatherapist. She immersed herself in four years of the study and practice of Craniosacral Therapy, a pursuit that took her to Hawaii, Italy, Switzerland, and the United States. When asked that infamous question about coming back, Gayle eloquently stated, “Something about the simplicity of a small town, the 403 Walnut St • Lawrenceburg, IN 47025 (812) 537-2020 • lawrenceburgeyecenter.com Gayle Stephens tightness of family.” Ms. Stephens now enjoys living in Lawrenceburg, the small-town feel where everyone knows everyone and the three-minute walk to work (who wouldn’t!). When asked about her experience of moving back home, Ms. Stephens said, “I feel that I am in the right place, right now, and for the right reasons. I feel at home.” A calm and peace can be heard in Gayle’s voice as she speaks. I found the descriptive words of intelligent, eloquent, mixed with a bit of a creative intrigue running through my mind as I spoke with Gayle. Thank you, Gayle Stephens, for coming home and applying all that you have learned from your life experiences with all of us. People like you make our community the wonderful place that it is. Please note that the people who are featured in this column are unaware of the article until it is published. They are the members of the community who would be the first to say that they are not deserving, that others do so much more than they do. In reality these are the people whose actions and life choices inspire us to get involved, do what is right, and improve the lives of our fellow neighbors. Several residents shared information about land usage for contiguous plots that should remain unchanged. Others discussed conditional uses and the feasibility of the parameters. Business owners reviewed boundaries and proposed variance requirements. Some community leaders inquired about parcels that may become incorporated into cities and towns in the area. Pence Recognizes Judge Cleary for VTC Continued from page 1A Mentor Program. Judge Cleary has seen firsthand the concerns that arise from a veteran coming back to his or her community after witnessing the atrocities of war. He strives to consider each case independently and has a strong relationship with Veteran Affairs to address the needs of those veterans who have developed issues. Judge Cleary shared, “For Rep. Pence to have chosen to visit us is huge. He acknowledged that what we are accomplishing is good, and any doubts about the effectiveness of the program are gone. His support inspires us to find ways to make our VTC better.” Before his recent visit, Rep. Pence had contacted Judge Cleary about meeting to discuss VTC. However, Judge Cleary was involved in a jury trial and had to decline the invitation. But Rep. Pence was persistent and found his way to Judge Cleary’s court for VTC. He spoke to the veterans who were in attendance that day, offering encouragement and support. He assured them that bills in front of the House of Representatives receive bipartisan support. “If there’s a veteran’s bill, every one of us is on it. We see it as a moral requirement to do something for our veterans.” Judge Jonathan Cleary and Rep. Greg Pence Forty-two years after volunteering to serve our country, Rep. Pence stresses that he and his staff will continue to work for veteran concerns. He urges veterans needing assistance to contact his office at https://pence.house.gov. The next steps in the process for the zoning changes will be for the County Plan Commission to review the input submitted by the public. Future public workshops are being considered for August or September of this year. According to Mr. McCormack, “Until we get a significant amount of input/ feedback that the board members are comfortable with, we will not proceed with finalizing the draft, updated text, and map.” Upon approval of the new zoning ordinance map by the Plan Commission, a public hearing will be held, followed a vote by the Dearborn County Commissioners. Residents are encouraged to submit written comments and suggestions to Dearborn County Planning and Zoning, 165 Mary St, Lawrenceburg, IN 47025.
