Solution 1
This dashcam is also a rear view mirror. The dashcam is
attached to the bottom of the rear view mirror. It has 360
degree vision as there are two cameras on the spherical
dashcam, one facing the road, and the other facing inside
the vehicle. The glass mirror also works as a taximeter, as it
is able to display the fare of the taxi ride. Below the mirror,
there are a row of buttons that can be used to calculate the
fare. The dashcam has a mounting system that is used for
regular rear view mirrors, which consists of a base that
connects to a mounting system that is attached to the
windscreen of the car.
Solution 2
This dashcam has a long cylindrical shape. On the bottom of the dashcam, there is a screen that flips out that
works as a taximeter, displaying the total fare of the ride to the customers. It also has a screen that shows the
user what is being recorded, a dual camera that records the road as well as the inside of the car, and buttons on
the bottom of the dashcam that help to calculate the fare. On the left side of the dashcam, there is a power-on
button that powers the unit. On the bottom of the dashcam, there is an emergency alert button, it is placed on the
bottom of the dashcam to avoid the user accidentally
pressing it. When this button is pressed it will send an alert
to call for help, which can be used when the user is in danger.
The dashcam has a suction cup mounting system.

MY TARGET MARKET...
TAXI DRIVERS
MY MINI BRIEF
There are dangers that taxi drivers face from the road as well as the customers they meet. They have the responsibility of
keeping themselves safe as well as their customers, and with the rise of Uber, Lyft, and other taxi booking services, taking a
taxi is more common for everyday people. Design and graphically communicate a new concept design for a dashcam that is to

EMERGENCY ALERT
Definition
Emergency is defined as “an unforeseen combination of circumstances or the resulting state
that calls for immediate action”. Alert is defined as “an alarm or other signal of danger”.
Research
Taxi drivers face unforeseen events everyday, it is part of their job description to pick up
strangers and deliver them to their wanted destination. There are many different instances
where taxi drivers are faced with assault by their customers. For example an instance over
the summer of 2020 where a man unprovokedly broke a beer bottle over the head of his taxi
driver and threatened to stab him with the glass shards.
how it effects my design
These situations are very dangerous for the taxi drivers as they are alone with their customers
and can’t ask for help. Therefore, an emergency alert feature would be extremely beneficial for
their jobs.
NIGHT VISION
Definition
Night vision is defined as “the ability to see in the dark”.
Research
Night vision can be incorporated into the dash cam by using auto-contrast effects to the
recordings in low-light conditions. This will allow footage to be clearly viewed from all times
of day, ensuring that the dash cam can achieve its full-function whenever necessary. The
Nextbase dash cams have night vision which use sensors to “improve picture clarity for
night-time driving” and “adjusts the contrast and brightness to further enhance the footage”
how it effects my design
Taxi drivers can operate at any time of the day. That is why it is essential that the dash cam is
able to work at high quality even when there is little light available..
The USB type-C socket is

Definition
Safety is defined as “the condition of being safe from
undergoing or causing hurt, injury, or loss”.
Research
Driver safety is essential to taxi drivers as they not only have to
look out for their personal safety, but also the safety of their
passengers and others on the road. They bear great
responsibility in this aspect, therefore having features on the
dashcam that enhance driver safety is a thoughtful element for
the target market of taxi drivers. Some elements that can be
included are location tracking, having a clear
audio/microphone, and a 360 degree view camera.
how it effects my design
These elements are to protect drivers from assault,
harassment, and car accidents, as it is able to provide clear and
concrete evidence on the events that happen if it is needed.

Taximeter Dash Cam
Definition
Taximeters are the device that record the fare of the taxi ride. It is formally defined as “an
instrument for use in a hired vehicle (such as a taxicab) for automatically showing the fare due”.
Research
A taximeter works by taking into account the distance traveled, the total time of the trip, the basic
rate, and the stop times, and uses those figures to calculate the total amount to be paid. Electric
pulses are sent by sensors which are attached to the car’s transmission system each time the
car travels a certain distance. In Dublin, the day rate is €3.80 for the base charge, 1.14 - 1.50 € for
every kilometer traveled, and 0.40 € per minute which is used for when the car is stopped or
instructed to wait.
how it effects my design
A taximeter being incorporated into the dash cam will be convenient for taxi drivers as it provides
two essential products in one.

HOW IT MEETS THE REQUIREMENTS
1. The dashcam uses a double-sided tape mounting system.
HOW IT MEETS THE REQUIREMENTS
1. The mounting system is one of a regular rear view mirror, the base connects to the existing mount that is on the
windscreen of a car.
2. There is a dash cam connected to the bottom of the rear view mirror which can record the road as well as the
inside of the car.
3. The dashcam has simple controls as it has a minimal amount of buttons. The buttons can be used to calculate the
taxi fare as well as control the dashcam.
4. The dashcam has elements of driver safety as it has a 360 degree view camera which helps to ensure the
driver’s safety by providing proof of events
5. The dashcam is also a taximeter, displaying the total fare to customers on the glass mirror.
2. There is a camera on the front side of the dashcam which is able to record the events that take place on the road ahead.
3. The dashcam has simple controls, a power-on button and four buttons located on the button mechanism that can be stored away.
4. The dashcam has elements of driver safety by having a clear microphone and speaker, which allows events to be clearly recorded
for evidence.
5. The dashcam also functions as a taximeter by having a screen that can display the total fare of the taxi ride.
This rectangular dashcam has a button mechanism on the bottom of
it. The mechanism works by pushing the bottom of the dashcam
where the mechanism is located, which releases the base where

pushed back into the body of the dashcam. The buttons are used to
help calculate the total fare of the taxi ride. The dashcam consists ofMy dashcam will use the mountingThe dashcam will have a front-facing camera as

record a 360 degree view of the environment.
The elements of driver safety that my dashcam will
have will be 360 degree vision which can be seen
from solution 1 and 2. This element of driver safety is
extremely important to include as taxi drivers not
only take the risk of the road ahead of them but as
well as the clients they have. That is why 360 degree
vision is important for driver safety.
HOW IT MEETS THE REQUIREMENTS
1. The dashcam uses a suction cup mounting system which can be mounted onto the
windscreen of a car.
2. There is a camera on the front and on the back of the dashcam. It can record the
inside of the car as well as the road ahead.
3. The dashcam has simple controls. It has a power-on button, four buttons to help
calculate the fare and control the dashcam, as well as an emergency alert button.
4. The dashcam has elements of driver safety as it has an emergency alert button as
well as a 360-degree view.
5. The dashcam also functions as a taximeter when the screen on the bottom flips out.

REQUIREMENTS
My dashcam will have a button mechanism that
is seen in solution 3, as well as a power-on

presented in the way of solution 1. This means that
the taximeter will be shown on the mirror/screen
of the rearview mirror, as it will display the total
fare on it. This is the most practical solution as this
will allow one product to fulfill three uses, dash
cam, rearview mirror, and taximeter.
1From output 1, I researched the different mounting
systems that dash cams have. The main mounting
systems that dash cams have are suction cup and
foam tape mounting systems, there are also some
more advanced systems like magnetic as seen in the
Next Base dash cams. The mounting system is
important as it places the dash cam in a stable
position so it can record the footage most clearly. My
dash cam must have a stable mounting system.
2From output 1, I researched the importance of recording
to dash cams. The sole purpose of a dash cam is to
clearly record the events that happen on the road to
playback in the future. They record the footage in order to
provide evidence if it is needed, for example if there is an
argument or court case. That is why it is necessary for
the dash cam to also record in high quality so it can
capture the most precise detail. My dash cam must be
able to record the events on the road.
3When modelling the Claoner Dash Cam, I noticed that
there was little space available for the features (buttons,
USB, HDMI, etc.) to be placed, limiting the number of
features that could be provided by the dash cam. I felt like
to maximise the features offered by the dash cams, there
needs to be a good system to organize the features and
simplify them. My dash cam needs to have simple
controls.
4In output 7, I researched the importance of driver
safety for taxi drivers. I researched elements that
could be provided by the dash cam to ensure safety,
like 360 degree vision, clear audio/microphone, and
location tracking. Their safety is important, as it can
be a dangerous job in its own aspects, the dash cam
will help to provide safety for them. My dash cam
needs to provide features that ensure driver safety.
5In output 7, I researched taximeters and how they
work. They are an essential device for all taxi drivers
as they need a device to fairly calculate the price of
the rides. The calculations of taximeters are
standardised, but the way of calculation by h
taximeter can vary. A tool that incorporates a
taximeter and dash cam element will be specific to
taxi drivers and benefit their work. My dash cam needs
to have a taximeter element.
