JOHN RADFORD
Welcome to Stefan Rupp,
Bradford City’s chairman,
to One Call Stadium for today’s
match.
Our opening three league matches
have produced a good, early points
tally.
We can all see the positivity with
which our players are endeavouring
to play, none more so than on
Tuesday night at Colchester.
I was greatly encouraged to see some
eye-catching, free-flowing football
and our display on the night should
have merited all three points.
Today’s match is likely to be our
sternest test so far against a Bradford
City outfit who many are tipping
as promotion contenders, though I
know we have enough quality in our
ranks to maintain our excellent start
to the season at One Call Stadium.
Elsewhere, I was delighted to see
so many supporters at our Open
Day at RH Academy last Sunday. It
was a perfect day to show our new
training ground to the community of
Mansfield for the first time.
Many of our new signings remark
about the facilities upon joining
us and I am proud that we have a
training base of this quality. It is a
first-class facility for our first-team,
academy and ladies and will be a real
legacy for the club.
Thank you to the 224 supporters who
made the 340-mile round journey
to Colchester in mid-week. It is an
outstanding show of support towards
our team to travel such a distance
on a Tuesday evening, with all the
expense included.
Let’s maintain our strong home start
this afternoon.
NIGEL
CLOUGH
Welcome to Bradford City The early signs are good and
manager Derek Adams, we’re encouraged by our opening
along with the players, staff and three matches, with seven points
fans from West Yorkshire this acquired.
evening.
We found a way to win in both of
our opening two matches – against
Bristol Rovers and Newport County
- when we were perhaps not as
fluent as we would like to be. But
regardless, we scored four good
goals in our two home league
games to help us earn maximum
points.
We know we can be better with and
without the ball, but to win two
home games without playing at our
best is an encouraging sign.
A very good performance at
Colchester United followed in
mid-week, where we controlled the
game for long periods and created
numerous opportunities.
The frustration for us was not
seeing out the game, following a
number of chances created, and
conceding a last minute penalty
after a very poor decision from
the referee.
With that noted, it’s up to us to
kill the clock prior to the penalty
and we have to be better with
our decision-making in games.
But we take heart from some very
good football played. We probably
created more opportunities on
Tuesday than we did from the first
two home games, so there are
many positives still to take from
our match at Colchester, despite
dropping two points.
With eight new players in the squad,
the players are still getting to know
one another and it’ll likely take a
few months for us to be a truly welloiled
team.
The players are enjoying playing in
front of you, our home supporters,
and it’s down to us to maintain
our promising start with positive
performances and results.
Enjoy today’s game.
NEWSDESK
NEW SCOREBOARD
COMING SOON
Last week, we were proud to announce that
a new LED scoreboard will be installed at One
Call Stadium by the end of the calendar year.
Commissioned by global leaders in sports
stadia LED solution technology, ADI, the new
screen will replace the existing scoreboard on
the Bishop Street side of One Call Stadium.
The new screen, 25m 2 in size, will show a wide
range of visual features, including previous
match highlights and commercial adverts.
The new scoreboard will enhance the matchday
experience of our supporters and commercial
partners.
Chief executive officer David Sharpe said:
“The upgrading to a new scoreboard has been
overdue and we’re pleased to be working
with one of the leading specialists in LED
technology, ADI, who will help fulfil our
ambitions.
“The screen will be far more flexible and
effective than our current one and will enable
us to produce and project dynamic content on
a matchday at One Call Stadium.
“The new scoreboard will also be used as
an innovative, promotional platform for
advertisers, both locally and nationally, to
showcase their brands.
“We’re very much looking forward to its
installation and will keep our supporters up-todate
with the latest developments as and when
necessary.”
Stags’ forward Tyrese Sinclair
STAGS PROGRESS TO PREMIER LEAGUE CUP GROUP STAGE
Mansfield Town’s under-23s will
join Leeds United under-23s,
Sunderland under-23s and Wigan
Athletic under-23s in the Premier
League Cup group stage, following a
recent 3-2 win at Salford City in the
competition’s qualifying round.
Salford took the lead in the first-half
through a Matt Sargent goal in the
17th minute, but the Stags responded
through James Clarke and Jimmy
Knowles at the Peninsula Stadium.
Late on, the hosts equalised through
Ben Finley, but a stoppage time
penalty, converted by Tyrese Sinclair,
secured Mansfield’s passage to the
competition’s group stage.
The Premier League Cup is a UEFA
Champions League style competition,
with 32 clubs’ under-23 sides making
up the group stage. Because more
than 32 clubs entered this year’s
competition, there was an extra round
of qualifying, which the Stags faced
Salford in last week.
The Stags will face Leeds United U23,
Sunderland U23 and Wigan Athletic
U23 in their group, home and away.
Fixture details will be announced in
due course.
Each side in the Premier League
Cup is allowed to field three ‘overage’
outfield players, as well as a
goalkeeper born before 01 January
1997 in the 2021/22 season. All other
players must be under-23.
The competition format is as
follows...
• Qualifying stage If more than
32 clubs enter the competition, a
qualifying knock-out stage takes
place between Category 3 and 4 clubs
to determine who joins Category 1
and 2 sides in the Group stage
• Group stage The tournament
will be split into eight groups of four
clubs, with each team playing their
opposing clubs home and away.
The top two teams advance to the
knockout stage.
• Knockout stage The last 16,
quarter-finals, semi-finals and final
will all be one-off knockout ties. If the
ties are level after 90 minutes, they go
to extra-time and then penalties if the
teams still can’t be separated.
Following the game, academy
manager Richard Cooper said: “As
an academy and a football club, it’s a
great achievement to reach the group
stages [of the Premier League Cup].
It’s all very new to us.
“To ‘mix it’ with these types of teams,
it gives us six games [three home,
three away] against Leeds, Wigan and
Sunderland, and it hopefully brings a
lot of positives for the club.
“I was as pleased as punch for the
young lads [who played in the game]
and because of where the academy is
heading as a whole.
“Yes, we have a games programme
for our young lads, but now we also
have access to that ‘next tier,’ in terms
of us pitching our players against a
Premier League under-23 side.
“From a development point of view,
it certainly gives you an indication of
where your players are at and what
level we’re at.”
Under-18s’ striker Jack Deakin tells
the story of last week’s narrow 2-1
defeat to Scunthorpe United at The
RH Academy, a game the forward
netted in from the penalty spot.
think we were the better side
I in the first-half, especially for
the first 30 minutes. We’ve been
working hard on our pressing and
that seemed to work throughout
the whole half.
We started to create more chances
than we were doing in pre-season,
which all comes from our learning in
training.
With Scunthorpe, they were very
good at playing out from the back and
getting it up to the strikers quickly.
We got to half-time at 0-0, and the
coaches told us that we needed to
be more composed in the final third.
We agreed that, as a team, we just
needed that bit of composure after a
good first-half.
But, early in the second-half,
Scunthorpe got a goal from a corner.
We didn’t mark the back post as well
as we should have done, but it was a
good delivery by the corner taker.
Our reaction to the goal was good as
we didn’t let our heads go down. We
kept winning possession by pressing
high up the pitch, starting with the
forwards.
Taylor Anderson whipped a ball into
me and I got taken down in the box,
THE
ACADEMY
GOALSCORER
DISCUSSES
NARROW
DEFEAT
Striker Jack Deakin prepares to take
his penalty at The RH Academy
which led to a penalty. I put it away
to get us back into the game and I
think from there we had the edge,
but we were unlucky with the second
Scunthorpe goal.
We were trying to push for that
second ourselves, but their goal came
from not tracking a runner. They
managed to get down the sides and it
ended up being a tap-in from a cross
to make it 2-1.
It was disappointing to lose so late
on. Looking forward, we need to have
some added composure in the final
third and not waste our chances.
If you rush the chance, you have less
of an opportunity to score, so some
more composure is needed in the
next game.
Despite the loss, any time of
the season is good to get on the
scoresheet. I had a really good season
last term with my goal return and I
didn’t want that to drop.
I returned from having COVID on
Thursday and had my first game of
the season on Saturday, so to score
was brilliant.
CONSIGNS HIS PET HATES
INTO ROOM 101…
PEOPLE: T-Bag from Prison Break. He’s the
dirtiest human I’ve ever seen in my life.
FASHION: Stompers. They’re big clunky things.
Shin-breakers.
FOOD: Cheese. I’ve never liked cheese. It stinks,
tastes horrible and is a dirty food.
SPORT: Every time I play tennis, my Mrs. beats me. We
played as recently as last Thursday and she cleaned
me up in three straight sets, so I’ll put tennis into Room
101.
MODERN LIFE: There’s too much technology now,
for kids especially. I remember going out to play
when I was young and just enjoying being free.
Nowadays hardly any kids seem to go out and play
in the park. There’s too much technology; games
and social media keep them indoors.
WILDCARD: I hate losing football matches. I need about
three to four days afterwards to ‘get over’ losing a game
of football.
Giving Football Back to
Small Business
At eBay, we know small business and
football clubs used to be like chips and
gravy, two peas in a pod – a match
made in community heaven.
Ironmongers, ship workers, spring
makers and cobblers, all formed clubs
which decades later are still prospering.
But nowadays, you’d think it was all
eyewatering transfers, Super Leagues
and mega sponsors, detached from the
humble origins of our historic clubs.
That’s why eBay are proud to support
300,000 small businesses who help
power EFL clubs nationwide. We’ll be
donating our advertising space to a lot
of these businesses – on match day
hoardings, around grounds and beyond –
throughout the coming season, to ensure
they can continue to thrive in our local
communities. So, join us in giving your
support to Small Business Power, because
today, they need us more than ever.
Mansfield Town Ladies were in
action last Sunday at our Open
Day at The RH Academy – the Stags’
training ground – drawing 2-2 with a
Nottingham Forest Women XI.
Shannon Purdy and Amy Dawson
were on the scoresheet for the home
side, who had the delight of playing in
front of supporters after two null and
void seasons.
Ladies’ director of football Allan
Woodfield says it was ‘really great’ to
see fans at a ladies’ fixture after some
difficult moments for the side over the
past 17 months.
“It was an excellent day. There were
a lot of fans there, which was great. It
was some great exposure for the team
to play in front of so many people,” he
told The Stag.
“It’s really great that fans could come
in and see what Mansfield Town is
about, with us being such an inclusive
club.
“The game itself was a good one.
In the first 45, we started to gel as a
team, then Andi [Bell, manager] tried
a change of shape in the second-half
which didn’t perhaps work as well as
we’d hoped.
“We learned a lot from the game. If
anything, it told us what we need to
work on in training to ensure we’re
ready to go at the start of the season.”
Mansfield Town Ladies and Nottingham Forest Women
line up ahead of last week’s match at The RH Academy
Woodfield also looked ahead to the
new campaign, which starts away
at local rivals Chesterfield in early
September.
“The first game of the season is always
important, whether it’s Chesterfield
or not. It’s important to us to start
the season well and get points on the
board,” he added.
“We’re looking to place well this
season, so the points are valuable to
us right from the off.
“Because we’re playing Chesterfield,
our closest rivals, it’s going to make
for a great occasion to start the
campaign.
“The most important thing is that we
come away from that game with a
positive result.
“We want to give the players the
opportunity to gel, which may take
us three or four games. In the first
few games, it’s just about getting the
results, whether it looks good or a bit
messy.
“Everyone is particularly excited this
year, as we may get that full campaign
after two null and void seasons.
“But there’s also a bit of nervousness
as COVID hasn’t gone away and we still
have to be mindful. We’ll just have to
keep our fingers crossed that we can
get a good run of games in and play
consistently throughout the season.”
THE GOLDEN ARCHIVE
From the sublime to the ridiculous
and everything in between, we look
back with a Stags’ hero of the past,
focusing on memorable behindthe-scenes
moments they will never
forget.
‘HIS STORY’
PROJECTING A PARADE OF GLORIOUS DAYS FROM
THE WORLD’S OLDEST PROFESSIONAL GROUND
Continuing the season with ‘His-
Story’ is former favourite Tony
Lowery, who played for the club from
1982 – 1991.
The first story I recall is one time,
before a game, I was in a rush to
get the train.
Anyway, I got to the ground and was
getting changed when suddenly one
of the lads shouted towards me, “he’s
got a pair of knickers on!” So, I looked
down and, sure enough, at the front
of my ‘shorts’ was a pretty flowery
bow.
The next thing the word had spread
around the changing room that I’d
got a pair of knickers on! To this day
the lads won’t let it go.
What had happened is that, in my
rush for the train, I’d just grabbed
some underpants from the drawer
without looking and inadvertently
picked up a pair of our lass’!
The story has gone down in Mansfield
Town folklore. A few years later Kevin
Kent was on the local radio, and he
was asked what’s the funniest thing
he’s seen in football? You can guess
what he told them - people refer to
this story to this day and still pull my
leg over it!
Another story involves my inability to
head the ball – I was never any good
at my timing for them. So, one week
– before a County Cup match against
Notts County – Ian Greaves had me
involved in some drills where balls
were continuously chipped up to me
on the 18-yard line for me to practice
set pieces and head the ball on the
edge of the opposition’s box.
So, the match came… we had a
corner, and I drifted into the box
(which I wasn’t supposed to do as
Greavesy wanted me to stay on the
edge) – the ball was coming toward
me, and I saw Brian ‘Killer’ Kilcline
coming right for me… I thought I was
going to get clattered, so I turned
my back, ready to get hit. As I did so,
the ball hit me on the head and flew
into the back of the net! I couldn’t
believe it!
Then, another time – I was sharing
a room on an away day with Kevin
Hitchcock and Neville Chamberlain.
‘Hitchy’ used to snore like a pig.
Anyway, this one night, there was a
big moth flying around the room, so
I caught it and put it in his mouth…
until he then ended up choking!
Hitchy, from that moment, vowed to
get me back. And I’ll leave it at that!
