Deschampsia cespitosa<br />
TUFTED HAIR GRASS<br />
A cool-season native. Grows in a tufted mound<br />
<strong>of</strong> narrow, green foliage. Long stalks are topped<br />
by a multitude <strong>of</strong> airy, light-green inflorescences<br />
in early summer (flowers more in cool climates).<br />
Blooms are most pr<strong>of</strong>use in sun but will grow<br />
in part shade. Large groupings can be used as<br />
ground cover. Semi-evergreen in mild winters.<br />

Cool season, green, 1’, 1.5’ with blooms, sun-part<br />
shade, average-wet, flowers early summer (mostly<br />
in cool climates), Zones 4-7, Origin: Northern and<br />

Deschampsia cespitosa ‘Goldtau’<br />
GOLDEN DEW TUFTED HAIR GRASS<br />
Like the species, this cultivar is clump growing<br />
and semi-evergreen, with fine stems topped<br />
by airy flowers. But, ‘Goldtau’ produces chartreuse-yellow<br />
seed heads; great for cut flowers.<br />
Plant in masses or contrast with sedges,<br />
ferns, or Hosta. Flowers best in cooler climates;<br />
needs semi-shade in warm climates (bloom<br />
production may lessen).<br />

Elymus hystrix<br />
BOTTLEBRUSH GRASS<br />
Produces appealing, airy, bottlebrush seed<br />
heads in midsummer. Deep green, narrow leaves<br />
reach about 3’; flowers rise a foot above. Adaptable<br />
to clay, sandy soils, and rich garden soil;<br />
will grow where other grasses will not, including<br />
dry shade. Formerly called Hystrix patula.<br />

Cool season, green, 3’, 4’ with blooms, part sunshade,<br />
dry-moist, flowers midsummer, Zones 4-9,<br />
