MANAGER’S NOTES
“Before the closure of the window at the end of the movement, I hope that we will
have further additions to the squad in a number of areas to make us stronger”
After a hectic couple of days, we are
looking forward to match day again as
we welcome Huddersfield Town to
Bramall Lane.
I am aware of the pride that Yorkshire people
feel when they beat local rivals and the aim is to
make Blades fans happy at 5pm tonight.
For every team, the Championship is
relentless, everyone connected with the
game understands that and we come into this
game with very little preparation time after
Wednesday night.
At West Brom, of course, we were
disappointed, it was a bad night for us, and I will
not offer excuses. We were not satisfied with the
performance; they were stronger and won more
second balls and that is something we have to
address to improve our game. We tried to move
the ball and create chances but that became
difficult when we were chasing the game, we
paid an expensive price for our defending at setpieces.
We are a work in progress, we are still
rebuilding our squad and this game also helped
us to understand how we need to improve to be
a competitive team in this league. We know what
we need to do to be the team we want to be.
That followed a long trip to Swansea when we
were better defensively, they didn’t create many
chances, but we did not do enough to win the
match. There were sections of the game when
we did well, it is our intention to attack with pace
and we are always trying to develop individuals
and combinations to look for solutions and pick
up wins – we started with four strikers and then
changed it as the game progressed.
In total, we’ve only played six games and
in usual circumstances we would be working
to a preferred shape, but we lost around four
games in pre-season and are still developing.
There is a lot of talk about three or four at the
back, but the answer is we have to be able to
adapt and be flexible in our approach. The hard
work continues on the training ground, and
every game will make us all comfortable with
each other.
Off the field, there’s been our first movements
in the transfer market this week.
Ben Davies arrived, and he can help us, that’s
for sure, he has played a lot of Championship
football. We are assessing how to use him and
the system that will work best for us, but we
believe he can be really important to us.
Aaron Ramsdale’s exit is a significant
departure, but it was not unexpected – he is a
quality goalkeeper and we understood there
would be interest in him before the end of
the window. We wish him all the best, but our
immediate intention is to evaluate what is next
for us in that area of the pitch.
Before the closure of the window at the
end of the movement, I hope that we will have
further additions to the squad in a number
of areas to make us stronger going into
September and beyond.
PLAYER TALK
× BEN RELISHING COMPETITIVE EDGE AGAIN
New Blades signing
Ben Davies admits the
pull of competitive
football in front of a crowd was
a huge factor in his decision to
leave Liverpool for
Bramall Lane.
The former Preston
defender moved to Anfield last
season but with opportunities
seemingly limited moving
forward, Ben revealed the
chance to play in front of fans
again following a 17-month
Covid hiatus was too good an
opportunity to turn down.
The 26-year-old has penned
a season-long loan stint
with the Blades, and says he
can’t wait to be involved in
matchdays once again.
He said: “I just missed
matchdays and the buzz
around them, especially with
having fans in this season. It
has been a long time really
since I played a proper
matchday with a full crowd so
that’s part of the excitement
coming here and hopefully
having a successful season.
“I’m really happy to be here
to be honest. I had some really
exciting feelings when I was
driving into the place, once
I got into the building everyone
has been really friendly and
I’ve met most of the players
and the manager, so I feel
really comfortable already.”
When seeking pastures new,
it was United’s ability to pack
29,000 plus into the ground
for a second-tier fixture which
persuaded him that the Steel
City was the place to be.
He added: “I’ve always liked
Sheffield United as a club,
playing against them, and
I obviously saw the crowd for
the game against Birmingham
- 29,000 fans, that was a pull
for me. I like the manager, and
the way he plays the game.
We have some great players
here and I think we have a
good chance of bouncing
straight back up.”
After playing close to 150
games in a successful stint
at Preston, the Barrow-born
operator is no stranger to the
R Ben has penned a season-long loan at Bramall Lane
rigours of the Championship.
While he admits his move
to Merseyside was a great
experience, playing football
regularly was his only ambition
for the current season.
“It was a move I couldn’t turn
down; it was really exciting
for me,” Ben said of his switch
to Liverpool.
“I’ve had a good six months
there but obviously playing
football is the most important
thing for any footballer so
that’s what has got me driven
to come out on loan, and
hopefully play some games
and get back to enjoying that
competitive side once again.”
× RHIAN THANKS TEAM-MATES AFTER BAGGING FIRST BLADES GOAL
The hard work
eventually paid off for
Rhian Brewster as he
netted his first United goal in
the recent success against
Carlisle United in the
Carabao Cup.
The popular striker has
endured a frustrating wait to
break his United duck since
arriving from Liverpool, but
his instincts didn’t let him
down when he latched onto
the loose ball to net after Billy
Sharp’s initial effort had been
parried by the ‘keeper.
After seeing the ball crash
into the net, Rhian admitted
the elation of scoring his first
for the club was there for all to
see, stating the support of his
team-mates – who all to a man
congratulated him – had been
key during some tough times.
He told SUTV Live: “Jayden
Bogle was the first there
to celebrate with me and
everyone else followed and
quick! They were really happy
for me, and I appreciate every
single one of them, especially
Sharpy being the captain.
With the amount of goals, he’s
scored in his career, for him
to say ‘well done’ - it meant
a lot to me.
“It has been tough, but I just
kept thinking it was going
to come and kept pushing,
making sure I continued
working hard in training on
all different types of finishing.
The goal arrived against
R Rhian off and running after netting against Carlisle
Carlisle, and it was a great
moment for me.”
Rhian also revealed he had
to do a quick double take
when he initially set off in the
direction of the South Stand
to celebrate. Quickly realising
that part of the stadium was
empty, he did an about turn to
sprint towards the fans and his
family members situated in the
John Street Stand as he rightly
lapped up what turned out to
be the winning goal.
He continued: “I started
running the other way, then
I realised the fans were in
the other stand! Obviously,
I wanted to share the
moment with everybody
who was there.
“It was pure emotion. Of
course, it was a relief, and
it was good to get my first
goal for the Blades. I was
excited and happy to share
the moment with the fans who
were there, I think you could
see in the pictures just how
much it meant to me and how
much it meant to my family as
well who were in the crowd.”
× ZAK EAGER FOR ANOTHER OPPORTUNITY
Youngster Zak Brunt is
keen for another first
team opportunity after
impressing in the recent
Carabao Cup success over
Carlisle United.
The midfielder was one of
five graduates from the United
Academy to make their senior
debut against the Cumbrians,
as boss Slaviša Jokanović
opted to shuffle his pack for
the Carabao Cup showdown.
With another cup game
firmly on the horizon, Zak is
pinning his hopes that his
impressive display in the first
round will warrant another
first team run out, as United
prepare to face Wayne
Rooney’s Derby in round two.
Zak said: “I was buzzing to
finally make my debut. I had a
little inkling that I might have
done well enough in training
and then we were told the
team the day before. The boys
who played did well, hopefully
the gaffer gives us the nod in
the next round.
“If not, it is about working
hard in training and being
there to back up the lads and
like we saw last year, if there’s
a couple of injuries, maybe
get on the bench and then
the next thing you know you
might be the player the gaffer
needs. I am hoping I can
prove if there is game time
there to be had, then I can
step up to the plate and do
the job that’s needed.”
R A positive debut for Zak Brunt against Carlisle
After being an unused
substitute on a number of
occasions last season, Zak’s
patience was finally rewarded
against Carlisle, following a
string of impressive displays
for the U23s in 2020/21.
The 19-year-old admitted
he was thrilled when he found
out he was playing, and whilst
there were a few pre-game
nerves, Zak believes his
playing style helped him
quickly settle into the contest.
He added: “I am quite
chilled out and I like to relax
on the ball and try and be
composed. That’s the kind of
player I am, I think I was more
nervous before the game
than when I was on the pitch.
When you get into it after the
first couple of minutes the
nerves settle, and you start
playing your game.
“It was something I hoped
was coming. I’ve been working
hard in pre-season, and I’ve
tried to do as much as I can
in the pre-season games just
to put myself in the gaffer’s
mind in case an opportunity
arises. When I found out
I was buzzing.”
THE BIG INTERVIEW
Ollie Norwood
PLAYER
IN FOCUS
UTB’s MARK WOOLLAS sits down with current
Blade and former Huddersfield ace Ollie Norwood
ahead of the visit of his former club...
Slaviša Jokanović and Ollie Norwood
certainly know the secret to winning
promotion from the Sky Bet
Championship and having achieved it together
before in West London, who’d bet against a
repeat in South Yorkshire?!
The 30-year-old midfielder was happy to
oblige when asked to shed some light on
what makes the United boss tick ahead of this
afternoon’s clash against one of his former
clubs Huddersfield Town.
The former Northern Ireland international
also believes the future at Bramall Lane, a place
he regards as ‘home’, will be a bright one with
Jokanović at the helm and several promising
youngsters emerging from the Academy.
⊲ UTB: How do you reflect on the first
two league games of the season?
Following a disrupted pre-season
do we have to focus on the positives
whilst remaining calm and showing
some patience?
⊲ ON: “Yes, the pre-season was
disrupted and that’s not making
excuses, it’s fact. We had the enforced
isolation that limited our time working
with the new manager and I’ll be
honest, it’s a complete change from
the last four years or so under Chris
Wilder. Of course, as players we
were bitterly disappointed with the
performance and result against
Birmingham, nobody likes losing
and the supporters were probably
frustrated following something
of an anti-climax really. We didn’t
play forward quick enough, and
Birmingham held on gamely to their
early goal. The fans pay their money
and are always entitled to their
opinion, but as players we have to
trust the process of Slaviša and at
Swansea I thought we were much
better. We created more chances and
it’s just unfortunate we weren’t more
clinical as it was a game we felt we
could go on to win the longer it went.”
⊲ UTB: Five youngsters were handed
their full senior debuts in the Carabao
Cup success over Carlisle United
at Bramall Lane. How do you think
they did and how important was
the victory?
⊲ ON: “It was great to see so many
young boys from the Academy given
a chance to impress and it’s fantastic
to see Sheffield United producing
more exciting prospects for the future.
They’ve worked hard and have a
fantastic opportunity in front of them,
we as senior professionals need to
point them in the right direction and
I’m sure many of them will have good
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs HUDDERSFIELD TOWN

UTB 13
careers at this football club. To play
in front of our crowd is demanding
and it really is sink or swim time when
you cross that white line, but they all
performed excellently, and it will be
huge for their development.”
⊲ UTB: If the win against Carlisle
United was ‘important’, does
the celebrations following Rhian
Brewster’s first goal for the club show
how much it meant to him and all of
his team-mates?
⊲ ON: “I was personally delighted for
Rhian and if you speak to any of the
lads, they’ll all say the same. It’s a
weight off his shoulders and hopefully
there are many more to come for him
in red and white. Rhian was probably
more frustrated than anyone last
season, but let’s be honest nobody
had a season to be proud of and we
all knew working with him every day
just how hard he was trying and how
much he wanted to score that goal and
make a statement. Like everyone else,
it’s a fresh start for him now, we’re
delighted to have Rhian within the
group and for him personally and us
as a team we now need to build some
momentum quickly.”
⊲ UTB: Today sees us play our
fifth game of seven this month,
the relentless nature of the
Championship schedule hasn’t got
any easier in our absence, has it?
⊲ ON: “What more can you say about
this division, it’s simply just game after
game after game and as players you
just roll from Saturday into midweek
and on to the following weekend, it’s
class. It’s without question the most
competitive league in the world and
on any given day anyone is capable
of beating anyone, we’ve seen it
already and we’re only three weeks
into August! But it’s about having
a calmness, some patience and
striving to find that consistency in
performances and more importantly
results. We’ve got an experienced
group and that stands us in
good stead.”
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs HUDDERSFIELD TOWN

14 UTB
⊲ UTB: There can be nobody
better placed than you to talk to
us about what Slaviša Jokanović
brings to Bramall Lane, having won
promotion under his stewardship
whilst on-loan at Fulham during the
2017/18 season?
⊲ ON: “Definitely. I loved my time at
Craven Cottage and learnt so much
from Slaviša and all his staff. It is
fascinating to listen and learn about
the game from how they see it and
it’s then you realise they are winners
and are destined to succeed. We
couldn’t have got a better successor
to Chris, and I truly believe the club
made a terrific decision securing the
services of the manager as we look
to bounce back at the first attempt.
His track record speaks for itself and
I’m sure as time progresses, we’ll all
understand why he was brought to
Sheffield United. We as players share
his ambition, we want to get back to
the Premier League. The manager isn’t
here to find his feet and hang around,
he’ll demand instant success from us,
like the fans will of him.”
⊲ UTB: Having helped Fulham
to the promised land, were you
disappointed not to make that switch
a permanent one, although a move
to Bramall Lane proved to the be the
alternative?
⊲ ON: “Fulham spent £100 million
and moved in a different direction,
despite the manager making it clear
he wanted to sign me. I genuinely
believe I got the better deal though,
moving to Bramall Lane, sometimes
a club just feels right, and it did then
for me and still does now. I had to wait
another 12 months or so to finally get
a crack at the Premier League, but
things happen for a reason, and I have
no regrets at all, I’m delighted events
panned out as they did.”
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs HUDDERSFIELD TOWN

UTB 15
⊲ UTB: What is the secret to the
success Slaviša Jokanović has
enjoyed at this level?
⊲ ON: “He is a winner and accepts
nothing less. He has an understanding
of the game and a calmness about
him, he might look stern and not very
happy, but he never gets too high
or too low and most importantly he
knows the route to winning promotion.
I know exactly the demands he puts
on his players, but it’s done properly,
and everyone is buying into his
philosophies here, why wouldn’t they,
given his record? He is a great person
too, he’s articulate and funny, totally
different to the perception some
people may have. He’s a genuine
guy and a first-class manager, he
has brought a real positive energy
to the club and I’m confident about
the future.”
⊲ UTB: In June 2012, a fresh-faced
Ollie Norwood stepped out of
Manchester United and joined today’s
visitors Huddersfield Town on a free
transfer. How do you reflect on your
two-season stint with the Terriers?
⊲ ON: “Huddersfield were my first
permanent club, and it was then
I knew I was moving away from Old
Trafford for good. I was still finding my
feet as a footballer and unfortunately,
I probably never set the world alight
there. It was a promising start, then
I suffered a loss of form, I was in and
out of the team and we struggled to
be honest. I still remember the final
day draw against Barnsley, that was a
surreal experience for all involved and
I don’t think it’s happened since. The
second season saw a chopping and
changing of manager. Simon Grayson
signed me, he was replaced by Mark
Robins and when he departed Mark
Lillis and Steve Eyre took the reins as
caretaker managers before I moved on
to Reading. It was a real steep learning
curve for me but one that certainly
built me as a person and helped me
build some resilience. I learnt you
can’t take things personally; you have
to accept the rough with the smooth
and it was never going to be easy
having joined from the reserves at
Manchester United. I look back with
pride though because those two
years helped me mature and
make me a better player as
my career has progressed.”
⊲ UTB: Does facing a
former club carry any extra
significance or is it simply
business as normal?
⊲ ON: “When you’ve
played for the amount
of clubs I have by
the age of 30, I could
be playing one every
week! In all seriousness
though, I probably do
have a better affiliation
with people at Brighton
and Fulham but that’s only
because I was part of
a successful team at
those clubs and of
course everyone
wants to remember those good times
with that extra fondness. I was a young
man learning my trade when I was at
Huddersfield, I had to grow up fast and
I’ll be honest they never saw the best
of me consistently enough. I have no
issues whatsoever though and after
Saturday I genuinely wish them all the
best. Home to me is Sheffield United
though, it has felt that way since the
day I arrived, it’s been the best time
× SETTLING IN FOR THE DAY
Fans gather at Bramall Lane, but it isn’t for
football on this day, May 26th 1964. It’s the
cricket season and Yorkshire are taking on
Derbyshire in the County Championship.
This fantastic image shows the public
smoking a pipe, reading the Green ‘Un and
cleaning spectacles back in the day when
the Lane was as much a cricket venue than
a football one. This three-day match was
eventually drawn, with the likes of Fred
Trueman, Brian Close and John Hampshire
all playing for Yorkshire.
UNDER-23s UPDATE
United’s U23s started the new
campaign with a win and a clean sheet
after a comprehensive 4-0 success
over Watford.
Paul Heckingbottom selected a strong side
which included the likes of Tyler Smith, Kacper
Lopata, Zak Brunt, Daniel Jebbison and Kyron
Gordon who had all recently featured for the
first team in the Carabao Cup success over
Carlisle. The Blades were held at bay during
a goalless first-half, but Heckingbottom’s side
clicked into gear after the break.
On 57 minutes good work by Jebbison
resulted in an opportunity for Brunt, with the
latter curling the ball in from 20 yards.
Smith was denied United’s second when after
being fouled in the area, his resulting penalty
was saved. The same player then hit the bar
with a header as the Blades turned on the
style, before a second duly arrived when Andre
Brooks netted with a low powerful effort.
Smith bagged his first after finishing coolly
from Frankie Maguire’s ball in behind and there
was also time for a second when Gordon laid on
a simple finish for United’s fourth.
Blades: Dewhurst, Trialist, Cappello, Gordon, Lopata,
Gomis, Brunt, Maguire, Jebbison (Gaxha 85’), Smith, Brooks.
Unused: Hiddleston, Cullinan, Grant, Ayari.
UNDER-18s UPDATE
Striker Will Lankshear made a blistering
start to the new campaign after netting
a hat-trick in the opening day victory
over Colchester United.
Former Arsenal ace Lankshear enjoyed a
goal-laden end to last season, and he picked up
where he left off as Derek Geary’s side started
the new campaign with a win.
It took just under 15 minutes for Lankshear
to open the scoring with a stunning effort
from outside the area, and young forward Billy
Blacker then added a second with a fine strike
on his debut for the U18s.
Just before the break Lankshear was fouled
in the area by the Colchester ‘keeper, and
subsequently netted the spot kick himself to
make it 3-0.
In the second-half, Lankshear hit the bar
with a header whilst Theo Williams also went
close as the Blades continued to dominate.
United didn’t have to wait long for a fourth when
Lankshear dispatched a second penalty after
being pulled down by the defender.
Blades: Hiddleston, Waldron (Pitan 84’), Angell (Drake 84’),
Staniland, Sachdev, Anderson, T. Williams (Oluleye 81’), Aston,
WOMEN’S UPDATE
Ahead of the new season United
Women have completed the signing of
goalkeeper Nina Wilson from fellow
Championship side London City Lionessess.
The 22-year-old former Brighton, Lewes and
Watford stopper will now provide competition
for last season’s regular custodian Fran Kitching.
Nina said: “I honestly couldn’t be any happier,
I think it’s definitely the proudest moment of my
career so far. The quality we have in the squad,
it’s such an unreal opportunity for me to learn
from all of them and I can’t wait to get going.”
Boss Neil Redfearn added: “I’ve been
very impressed with Nina. She’s got good
experience at this level and she’s a more than
capable goalkeeper and good competition for
Fran. That’s what we wanted; we want to give
everyone competition.”
Meanwhile, United’s opening home game
of the new FA Women’s Championship season
against Durham has been selected for live
coverage on the FA Player.
The Blades will be making their return to
Chesterfield’s Technique Stadium for the new
campaign following a productive pre-season
which saw Redfearn’s side recently defeat
Leicester 2-0 after goals from Mia Enderby and
Rhema Lord-Mears.
SENIOR BLADES
WE’RE BACK!
Tuesday 17th August 2021 was a big day for
Senior Blades, that was the day we finally got
back into the Platinum Suite and were able to
resume our monthly lunch meetings.
With over 160 members present, it was so
good to see many old friends, welcome new
ones and also remember those who we had
lost since our last meeting in March 2020.
Understandably, some of our regular members
still feel uneasy about being in a large gathering
but we are sure they will come back to rejoin
us as soon as they are comfortable with
the situation.
Everyone was very happy to see former
Blades captain Chris Morgan who entertained
us with his Blades recollections.
We are all looking forward to many more
regular lunches and of course celebrating our
40th anniversary - but more of that later…
Our trip to Skegness on the 15th September
2021 still has a few spare seats available. For
more details, please contact Sue Foster on
0114 2550053.
Again, another reminder for members
attending our September lunch, this will be on
Monday 13th September 2021 and bookings
have to be made by Monday 6th September
2021, by contacting Stephen Gibbons on 01335
664560 or email info@seniorblades.com.
This week Rainbow Blades
member Michelle describes her
early experiences of watching
Sheffield United.
Tony Currie, Len Badger, Alan
Woodword. Growing up in the ‘90s,
they were the Blades legends we
heard about. They were the topic of
conversation in the pub and at the
Lane. Your dad or the old gentleman
next to you at the match would tell
you about the glory days and you’d
wish you’d been there to see it.
The ‘90s featured future legends
like Brian Deane. I remember
watching him at the Lane, the first few
matches I got to go to. There was a
Marcelo hat-trick that left us all on a
high later that decade.
There was nothing like matchdays
as a kid. The build up, the chip butty
and fizzy Vimto before the walk to
the ground, finding out the lineup.
Kick off...
Warnock joined us and there
was something exciting about it
from the start. Going to the FA Cup
semi-final at Old Trafford in ‘03 was
unbelievable.
We rejoiced as we earned
promotion, finally! We marched on. For
those too young to get to see that, we
got the memorable Wilder era.
It’s all history in the making. I can’t
wait to see what’s to come with
Jokanović’s reign.
Fables & Folklore
Blades historian JOHN GARRETT’S long-running inimitable account of following the Blades
always provides a talking point as UTB again extends a platform for his popular article...
History Without Soul...
I got through my share of walking over
lockdown. I made a decision to use the
time to try and get a little fitter and also
to try and stop myself from going stark raving
mad. I managed to keep my regime up,
because, well, I had to do something.
I could see all the tell-tale signs of bad habits
in the first month, you know, 6.00am Countdown,
then Cheers (two episodes), followed by Mike
R The empty stands of Bramall
Lane at the start of last season
and Molly, then Everybody Loves Raymond (two
episodes) and then Frazier. That left enough time
for a quick shower, breakfast, tidy up and then
Minder on ITV4 followed by The Professionals. It
was when I realised that Peter Boyle (who played
the dad in Raymond) was Young Frankenstein
in the Mel Brooks film, and had also been best
man for John Lennon, that I knew I had to do
something else and fast!
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs HUDDERSFIELD TOWN

36 UTB
On working days there was something
to occupy me – writing for the programme,
answering queries on ex-players etc - but that
was an all too fleeting ray of light breaking
through the Covid cloud that had descended.
Joking aside, I have written in these pages
before about my own frequent battles with
the black dog of depression and I had heard
him scratching at the door on more than
one occasion in that first month, so I was
determined that I wasn’t going to let him in.
I reorganised the vinyl collection. That took a
few days. Never realised that I had 12 copies of
Rubber Soul by The Beatles. Our house is like
a refuge for battered vinyl. If I find one for the
right money, I always feel sorry for it and take it
home to give it another chance. In my defence,
there are mono copies, stereo copies, English
ones, American ones, ones with different
track listings and ones with different covers.
I found the ones you thought you had lost, and
a fair few I had forgotten I had. It was great
reacquainting with Look Sharp by Joe Jackson
and a Tonic for The Troops by The Boomtown
Rats, but I was still sat on my backside and also
annoying the neighbours as I can never listen to
music quietly.
My attentions then turned to footy
programmes, books, pictures and general
rubbish accumulated over a lifetime. I was like
Howard Carter breaking the seal on an Egyptian
R Limited numbers of fans return for the Burnley game
tomb as I opened a cardboard box I hadn’t seen
for years and found my 1961 FA Cup semi-final
replay programme with ticket and my 1948 Isle
of Man Sheffield derby with tickets too, but after
a week, even my patience was being tried. At
this time, of course, football had ground to a
halt, so we were all in the same boat.
Now back to the walking. My youngest son
and my best mate, who was furloughed and
destined to lose his job at John Lewis, also
needed to do something for their own sanity,
so we became a modern-day version of Last
“To get a few fans in for the final game felt
so good, and it was incredible just what a
difference those inside our famous home had.
A wonderful experience and one that finally
made you think that you could see some
floodlights at the end of a very long tunnel”
of the Summer Wine. Three Blades wondering
around the Steel City, rediscovering just how
beautiful it is in every way, and talking mostly
about United, how much we missed football
and normality in general, but without trying to
make tanks out of upturned baths with pram
wheels and a plastic pipe for a periscope! At
first, we thought we had achieved something
major when we did five miles, then it became
six, seven, 10 and eventually 15!
The season eventually returned with the
games having to be played behind closed
doors and without the game’s most valuable
asset - the fans - and also the large majority
of staff. I had worked virtually every home
game for nearly 23 years and also been at
pretty much every away game as well, but the
numbers allowed by regulation in the ground
meant that any staff present had to have a role
that was specific to either the ground regs or
Covid protocol. As much as I wanted to be
there and play a part, and despite trying hard
to fit there, I knew I was pretty much shot.
For the first games we were away on holiday,
but the rest were watched in the same way
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs HUDDERSFIELD TOWN

UTB 37
as everyone else - on TV and from home.
As much as I understood and accepted the
situation, I mean, there was no argument, I still
found it difficult. I wasn’t on my own - far from
it. There are fans whose life revolves solely
around the fixture list, it’s their world, it’s their
husband and wife.
Out walking, we bumped into so many Blades
I knew all doing the same as us. There were,
of course, glimmers of hope when it looked as
though there would be a chance of a return as
the new season began, that fans would be in
the stadiums for the Christmas games and also
the realisation that, if this was the case, then the
majority of staff would be needed, but that was
also a false dawn.
It was like an out of body experience
watching us on the box. You could see that,
without the roar of the Kop and the very life
force that our fans put out to those in the shirt
out on the pitch, that we were missing a vital
part of what makes this club just what it is.
The fans here are the very oxygen of what we
are, and without them we just can’t breathe,
yet I suppose every club would say exactly
the same, I just think that with some, it’s even
more important.
Eventually, I was required to come in and
work from the Newcastle game at the turn of
this year. If I said I was emotional, then that
would be an understatement, but it became
very obvious very quickly that this wasn’t to
be the football that I know and love. Only
allowed on site an hour before, and only after
completing a health questionnaire and giving
a temperature test, it was sanitised football
in more ways than one. I worked John Street
but couldn’t walk through the ground as it
touched on red zone areas, having instead to
circle the perimeter and go in through the John
St reception. No one around the ground, no
hustle, no bustle, no burger vans, programme
sellers, no people, no life really. Just a husk, dry
and deathly quiet.
It was a privilege in one way to be involved,
but a burden in many other ways as it just
R Fans return in full for the home game
against Birmingham City
wasn’t the same without the people who make
the game what it is. It’s really that simple.
To get a few fans in for the final game felt
so good, and it was incredible just what a
difference those inside our famous home had. A
wonderful experience and one that finally made
you think that you could see some floodlights
at the end of a very long tunnel. Roll on to the
game against Birmingham a short while ago,
and you truly saw what had been missing - the
noise, the light and the life that shook the old
stadium once more to its very foundations.
The family had come home at last, and it was a
party that we won’t ever forget. Okay, we didn’t
get the result, but that will come. Covid did
more damage to the Lane and its fabric than
even the Luftwaffe managed in the war, let’s
hope it doesn’t take as long this time for the
club to recover.
It’s been a hard road. I’m still walking when
I get chance and now, I suspect that I always
will. It kept me sane when my life and one of my
big loves were out of reach to me for reasons
beyond our control. It’s been a time when I have
realised truly how important those close to me
really are, but also just how much the Sheffield
United family means to me as well. Time to
reappraise and adjust.
Welcome home, you have been
sorely missed!
Here at Sheffield United we’re thrilled to
continue to work with our friends at Sheffield
Sports Commentaries where, for over 70
years, they have provided free matchday
commentary to Blades fans who are blind or
partially sighted, to enable them to enjoy the
matchday experience amongst their fellow
supporters.
In recent years, and in keeping with other
clubs, Sheffield Sports Commentaries have
voice speaking to them enables their matchday
experience to be more enjoyable.
As a charity, Sheffield Sports Commentaries
provide all equipment required for supporters to
utilise this service and aim to be the supporters’
eyes and assist them in knowing what else may
Autism Hour will not only support autistic
people but also those with other hidden
FIRST LAST
This season PAUL HOLLAND picks out a Blade with
a connection to our opponents looking back on their
first and last outing for the red and white wizards...
Chris Lucketti had
already enjoyed a
long-established
career before joining the
Blades in early March 2006,
signing at the age of 34,
initially on loan, from Preston.
Before United, he had spent 17
years with Rochdale,
Stockport, Halifax, Bury and
Huddersfield. He served just
over two years at Bramall
Lane, making 17 appearances
(+ four as a sub), and scored
one goal in a League Cup
victory at MK Dons in August
2007. He spent a month on
loan at Southampton towards
the end of the 2007-08
campaign, and ended his
career back at Huddersfield
Town, where he played a total
of 92 times for the Terriers,
scoring twice.
Following his retirement
from playing, he became a
coach at Fleetwood Town
(where he twice took charge
as a caretaker), Scunthorpe
United, manager of Bury, as
well as a coach at Salford
City. He is currently assistant
to Graham Alexander at
Scottish Premier League side
Motherwell.
First Game...
Chris Lucket ti
18.04.2006 vs Leeds United (1-1)
Promotion to the Premier League had already been sealed
three days before Lucketti made his Blades debut six weeks
after signing. Having previously worked with then manager
Neil Warnock at Bury, the veteran was brought in as cover due
to Leigh Bromby being ruled out for several months through
injury. However, his debut was
overshadowed by Warnock’s
dismissal from the dugout
following Gary Kelly’s rash
tackle on Craig Short late on.
United had taken the lead
through Eirik Bakke’s own
goal on 10 minutes before
David Healy levelled before
the break. Lucketti put in a
stellar performance on his
debut and played in the
remaining fixtures against
Luton and Crystal Palace.
Last Game...
29.12.2007 vs Crystal Palace (0-1)
The final game of 2007 ended in defeat and it would also prove
to be Lucketti’s final game in a Blades shirt. It was a quiet match
for the defender, who produced a characteristic steady display,
his only blot arriving early when he conceded a free-kick on
the edge of the area after eight minutes following a handball.
He would join Southampton on loan in March before departing
Bramall Lane.
HE SHOOTS,
HE SCORES…
Paul Devlin
In every edition of this season’s UTB we go back into the Blades’ recent history to
look over some of the greatest goals scored by those in red and white. This week,
we remember a long-range strike netted against today’s opponents…
Date: 17/10/00 Opposition: Huddersfield Town Competition: Nationwide League Division One Scoreline: 3-0
× BACKGROUND…
After a mixed start to the
2000/01 season, United
had really started to find top
form by the time the season
had moved into October.
Neil Warnock’s side were
unbeaten in five games, which
included three wins, and prior
to kick-off had climbed into
eighth position after 10 games,
with a game in hand on most
of the teams around them.
Meanwhile, Huddersfield had
endured a wretched start to
the season and the day before
this Tuesday night trip to
Bramall Lane had sacked boss
Steve Bruce who had left the
Blades for Town in June 1999.
The Terriers were second
bottom of the division with
just one league win all season
which was against bottom
club Sheffield Wednesday.
Lou Macari, part of Bruce’s
backroom team at Bramall
Lane, was now in caretaker
charge of Huddersfield.
× THE GOAL…
Devlin had already showed
his capabilities earlier in the
season with a long-range
rocket which helped United to
a win over Blackburn. This was
a different type of finish which
underlined the winger’s talent.
A throw on the right was taken
by full-back Gus Uhlenbeek
which was controlled by
Devlin who then threaded
a pass into David Kelly with
his back to goal just inside
the area. Devlin followed his
pass and Kelly’s presence of
mind saw the veteran striker
lay the ball back into the
path of the onrushing Devlin
who speared a shot with the
outside of his right foot into
the corner beyond the dive of
Nico Vaeson.
× THE OUTCOME…
United had taken the lead in
this Yorkshire derby thanks
to a free-flowing move which
was started on half-way and
finished when Michael Brown’s
cross was headed in by Kelly.
Devlin’s fine strike on 64
minutes had made it 2-0 and
the game was then wrapped
up with 15 minutes remaining
when Kelly bagged his second
and United’s third. The result
inched United to within three
points of the top six whilst
Huddersfield remained rooted
within the bottom three.
SWAP
SHOP
There have been many player swap deals down the years at Bramall Lane with varying
degrees of success. For each edition of UTB this season we take a look back on some of those
transfers to delve further into the most famous exchange deals in United’s long history…
RONNIE SIMPSON & £6,000
to Sheffield United
1958
DEREK HAWKSWORTH
to Huddersfield United
× THE STORY…
Ronnie Simpson had long been on
United’s radar before his eventual arrival
at Bramall Lane when Blades boss Joe
Mercer reportedly tried to sign him from
Huddersfield in 1957. Town’s boss at that
time, a certain Bill Shankly, refused the
bid of £10,000 insisting that Simpson
was worth double the price United had
offered. The deal was dead it seemed
with United unwilling to budge on what
was initially tabled.
At the time of United’s initial interest,
the two clubs were not so far apart in
the old Second Division, but by the
end of the 1957/58 season United had
finished sixth and Huddersfield eight
points further back in ninth. In late May
1958 a deal appeared to be back on the
table, but this time the fee was much
less as Town sensed an opportunity
to take United’s Derek Hawksworth
as part of the deal. An agreement
was reached that Hawksworth would
join Town with the Terriers also
receiving £6,000 with Simpson moving
the other way.
× THE PLAYERS…
Born in Carlisle, Simpson had actually
accompanied a friend to Huddersfield
who had been invited for a trial but was
Ronnie Simpson
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs HUDDERSFIELD TOWN

UTB 47
in his career as an amateur in 1947.
He would go on to make his name at
Bradford City before Teddy Davison
signed him for United in 1950 aged 23.
Starting at outside left, he netted on
his United debut and his performance
instantly made him a favourite.
For the next seven seasons he,
alongside Alf Ringstead on the right,
became one of the most devastating
and dangerous pair of wingers in
United’s history. The duo played
a major role in United winning the
Second Division Championship in
1953, whilst Hawksworth’s form also
saw him play for the FA against the
Army in 1951 and England B against
France in 1952. By the time of the
move to Huddersfield he had made
286 appearances, scoring 88 goals
for the Blades.
Derek Hawksworth
offered a game himself and a place on
the ground staff. He made his debut
aged just 17 in 1951 when Huddersfield
were in the top flight, but ultimately had
to be patient for a regular spot in the
side which didn’t really arrive until 1956.
During his time with Town, he would
make 118 appearances, showing his
versatility by figuring in every frontline
position except centre-forward.
Hawksworth had started his career
with Bradford Park Avenue but did
actually sign for Huddersfield earlier
× THE OUTCOME…
When Simpson moved to Bramall Lane,
he was 24, with many years ahead of
him. Perhaps the same couldn’t be said
of Hawksworth who was now in his 30s
and seemingly on the final stretch of
his career. In the end, that’s how things
panned out for the pair.
Hawksworth played over 50 games
for Town in his two years with the
club before joining Lincoln City in
1960 and then Bradford again in 1961
where his professional career ended.
He would later run a newsagent in
Bradford and passed away in March this
year, aged 93.
Simpson would play an important
role as United earned promotion from
the Second Division in 1961 and also
reached the FA Cup semi-final in the
same year. After six years, he lost his
place and moved on to Carlisle in 1965,
ending his career in Scotland with
Queen of the South. He passed away
in 2010, aged 76. His nephew, Paul
Simpson, would later briefly play for the
Blades on loan in 1996.
SECRETS OF THE MUSEUM
Legends of the Lane curator JOHN GARRETT talks through some memorable
artifacts currently residing in the museum at Bramall Lane...
It’s amazing what survives in drawers
and boxes over the years, isn’t it?
This luggage tag is over 80 years old
and made simply out of cardboard with a string
to fasten it to the handle of a bag or trunk to
make sure that it gets to its destination. We all
do something similar in better times I suppose
when we are flying out for our jollies.
This simple tag is slightly different. It was
fastened to the case of a member of what could
be described as the ‘royal family’ of Blades for
a very special day indeed. I have written many
times about the fabulous Johnson family of
Ecclesfield. WH signed for the Blades in 1896
and won the League Championship in 1898, two
FA Cups, played for England and the Football
League and then went on to coach the club
for many years. His son, Harry, is our all-time
record goalscorer and mirrored his father in
1925 by lifting the FA Cup for the Blades, whilst
also playing for the Football League. Then there
was youngest son, Tom, he was also a Blades
player of some repute who was part of the
team that clinched promotion back to Division
One in 1939 and that topped the table until the
outbreak of war.
He also played in, what is to date, our last FA
Cup final appearance against Arsenal on April
25th, 1936. A few days earlier he had married
the lovely Gwen with team-mate Jock Dodds
as best man, before setting off to London by
train the day before the game to check in at the
Grand Hotel and destiny at the top of Wembley
Way in front of just shy of 100,000 people.
Incredible that this very label was attached to
his luggage as he set off to the game.
History books show that we lost 1-0 and
Tom lost the chance to add another winning
medal to the family hoard of gold. Sadly, he
passed in the ‘80s, but I was lucky to know
his wife, and spent many great afternoons up
at the family home on The Wheel, the house
where WH and his wife first lived when he
was a player before building a bungalow up
the road, and where the boys were both born.
She could produce the most amazing artefacts
from anywhere and was a mine of information
on the amazing family she married into. She
also smoked a fair few of my fags back then
(she used to kick her granddaughter out when
I was going round so she could have a crafty
smoke as they all thought she had packed
up!) and I was privileged to know someone
who directly remembered some of the figures
from our Victorian past who built the club
we know today.
Why did the tag survive? Well, I can tell you
that pretty well everything survived with them.
Telegrams to the team at Wembley, invitations
to the game, newspapers - incredible.
They also survived because Tom, like the rest
of the family, was a proud Blade who knew just
what it meant to have come from such stock and
to have played such a part in the proud history
of Sheffield United.
You could call it a label of quality.
40th Anniversary
To commemorate the 40th anniversary of United’s Fourth Division title winning season
in 1981/82, UTB trawls through our programme archive to chart the memorable season
through the eyes of the Blades matchday programme of the time. In this week’s
as United welcomed York City for the second home game of the season...
There was confirmation that a new prize of
the Blades Lottery would be a ‘motor car’.
× IAN PORTERFIELD…
Ian Porterfield began his notes by gently
insisting that the season would stand or fall
on what happened in the league, and whilst
not dismissing the cup, it was clear where
his priorities stood. He ended his notes by
mentioning there were ‘still some irons in the
fire’ as he looked to strengthen his squad.
HIGHS, LOWS
& THE UNUSUAL 1996/97
In each edition of UTB this season, DAVE BURKINSHAW looks back on a particular campaign
to seek out the good, bad and the sometimes strange events from the season...
Following the team’s strong end to the
1995/96 season optimism was high
amongst Blades fans for a sustained
promotion challenge. To add to the upbeat
mood, work on the newly constructed John
Street Stand was almost completed, a further
sign of the club’s progress under new owner,
Mike McDonald.
R Michael Vonk netted twice against Stoke
× THE HIGHS…
1. The emphatic
4-0 win at
Stoke City on
19th October
1996 was clear
evidence that
this United team
were genuine
contenders
for automatic
promotion. A
fine all-round
performance
was achieved
with two goals
from centre back
R Gareth Taylor scored twice in
the 4-4 draw against Birmingham
Michel Vonk and one each from Andy Walker
and Gareth Taylor. Sadly, just over a month
after the Stoke victory, Vonk suffered a severe
cruciate ligament injury and missed the rest of
the season.
2. Bramall Lane witnessed one of the most
topsy-turvy and entertaining games seen for
a number of years on 24th August 1996 when
the game with Birmingham City ended in an
amazing 4-4 draw. The Blades trailed 2-0
before rallying superbly with two goals apiece
for Taylor and Walker which handed United a
4-2 lead by the 72nd minute. City were not to
be denied and two future Blades in Paul Devlin,
with a penalty, and Jonathan Hunt scored to
leave the game all square at full-time.
UTB 53
3. The Division One play-off semi-final win
against Ipswich Town saw two of the tensest
and hardest fought games the Blades had
featured in for many years. The first leg at
Bramall Lane had ended 1-1 and most experts
felt that Town were now the clear favourites.
However, the Blades battled against all the
odds to draw 2-2 after extra time to win the tie
on away goals. During those tense 120 minutes
they had to manage an injury to goalkeeper
Alan Kelly and the sending off of midfielder Nick
Henry. Goals from Peter Katchouro and Walker
saw the Blades reach the Wembley final.
× THE LOWS...
1. One of the teams challenging with the Blades
for automatic promotion were South Yorkshire
neighbours Barnsley, managed by future United
boss Danny Wilson. The Tykes achieved the
double over the Blades, key results which saw
them win automatic promotion and condemn
United to the play-offs. Barnsley won 1-0 at the
Lane and 2-0 at Oakwell.
2. The team’s early exits from both the FA
Cup and Coca-Cola League Cup were very
disappointing. The FA Cup saw United lose 1-0
in the third round at Norwich City and give a
limp performance. The manner of their exit from
League Cup shocked most Blades fans. Playing
Division Two Stockport County over two legs
in round two, United lost the away leg 2-1 and
were expected to overturn this deficit at the
Lane. Instead, a crowd of 6,850 saw County
romp to a 5-2
win and a 7-3
aggregate
triumph.
3. The season’s
finale, the
Division One
play-off final at
Wembley saw
the team suffer
a devastating
last minute
1-0 defeat to
Crystal Palace.
R Jan Aage Fjortoft in action
against Palace in the play-off final
In a tense and dull game extra time seemed
certain until Palace’s David Hopkin scored a
spectacular last-minute winner. United had
looked tired and laboured throughout the game
with no cutting edge. Nevertheless, the manner
of the defeat was cruel.
× THE UNUSUAL...
1. The Blades’ Norwegian international
defender Roger Nilsen had an eventful few
weeks in the middle of the season. Firstly, he
had to withdraw from a United game prior to
kick off after being injured in the warm up and
then in the home game against Norwich City
he went in goal for the last 21 minutes when
regular ‘keeper Alan Kelly was injured. Sadly,
for Roger he conceded two goals meaning City
won 3-2.
2. Defender David Holdsworth, who signed
for the club in October, joined the ranks of
United players who have scored for and against
the Blades in the same match. For David this
occurred in the 2-1 away defeat at Swindon
Town on 1st February 1997. First, he had the
misfortune to put Town 2-0 up in the 70th
minute with his own goal. He then scored at the
right end minutes later to reduce the deficit.
3. New striker Jan-Aage Fjortoft signed at the
end of January 1997 and had a tremendous
impact on the team scoring 10 goals in 17
league appearances, as well as scoring the
Blades’ goal in the play-off semi-final first leg.
Sadly, another new signing midfielder John
Ebbrell had much less of an impact playing only
45 minutes at home to Reading and then never
again appearing for the Blades due to serious
injury problems.
× SEASON’S VERDICT...
After the weight of expectation, the season’s
ending was one of crushing disappointment.
With heavy investment yet again in the first
team squad it was expected that promotion
would be achieved. The manner of the defeat
in the play-off final was a sickener especially
against a Crystal Palace team the Blades had
beaten twice in the league.
54 UTB
FORMER PLAYER
FROM BRITISH
STEEL TO THE
FIRST DIVISION
UTB recently caught up with former Blade and Huddersfield fullback
TOM COWAN who discusses his career which included
a steep rise from some very humble beginnings…
Some say first impressions can
make or break a decision. Well,
in the case of Tom Cowan
following any instinct from his first look
at Bramall Lane may well have denied
him a place in one of United’s most
successful sides.
When the likeable Scot received the
call to go and speak to Blades boss
Dave Bassett regarding a potential
move back in the summer of 1991, his
first viewing of Bramall Lane would have
been a far cry from what he was used to.
Leaving a big club like Rangers
and a stadium the size of Ibrox, Tom
knew it would take some beating. He
would eventually see his expectations
matched in S2, but he revealed his
first glimpse of Bramall Lane didn’t
immediately show a path to some
memorable days ahead.
“I do remember when I first went to
Bramall Lane to discuss the move,”
Tom told UTB.
“I arrived at the ground and parked
behind the old John Street Stand. It is
fair to say that this particular area of
Bramall Lane was showing its age a little,
so my first impression was the place was
a bit of a hole! I was already thinking
that this might not go so well, but then
I was told to go to the other side of the
stadium for the main entrance and that
changed everything.
“Once I found the main car park and
saw the frontage of the South Stand,
I quickly realised there was much more
to Bramall Lane!
COWAN
56 UTB
FORMER PLAYER
“When I went inside and spoke to
Harry (Dave Bassett) I fell in love with the
place. I’ve loved coming back to Bramall
Lane ever since, it’s certainly moved on
from my first viewing!”
Tom’s move to United, then a First
Division outfit, was a steep climb from
humble beginnings. The left-back
started his career playing for Clyde, but
had no immediate thoughts about a fulltime
career in the game.
Working on an apprenticeship with
British Steel, football was a nice addition
to his working week, but his thought
process began to change when the
likes of Coventry City, Nottingham
Forest, Tottenham Hotspur and Glasgow
Rangers started to show a keen interest
in his talents.
It was sitting in Brian Clough’s
house where he realised a career in
the game was a possibility, but an
opportunity to work with a European
Cup winner did not tempt Tom initially to
move to England.
“Coventry had shown an interest in me
when I was at Clyde, but nothing came
of it,” explained Tom, who was playing in
the second tier of Scottish football.
“To be honest, I never really thought
anything of it because at the time I was
doing an apprenticeship with British
Steel, and I wasn’t really thinking of
changing careers at that time.
“Nottingham Forest came in
for me and then it was a totally
different ball game.
“I went to Brian Clough’s house which
was quite memorable. I caught a flight
down from Glasgow to East Midlands
with a lad called Martin Clark who was
also at Clyde. Ronnie Fenton (Clough’s
assistant) met us at the airport but
instead of going to the ground we had
to go to the manager’s house because
it was raining so he wanted to stay at
home, that was a little strange! We went
and Martin signed, and they agreed to
let me think about it.
“When I went home there was a scout
there waiting for me from Tottenham and
he had Terry Venables on the phone. He
told me he wanted me, and he knew I’d
been to speak to Forest. He told me, ‘I
can tell you now, Brian will put you in the
reserves but if you sign for me, you’ll go
straight into our first team.’ I was blown
away but had to make a decision there
and then, but I just didn’t think I could
move to London at the age I was then.
“When Rangers came in, I knew that
was the club for me. I was brought up
S Injury would
eventually rule
him out of the
FA Cup semifinal
in 1993
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs HUDDERSFIELD TOWN

UTB 57
R Tom started
his career with
Clyde before
joining United
via Rangers
on that side of the divide, so I signed for
them. I was straight into the first team
dressing room with the likes of Terry
Butcher, Ray Wilkins, Trevor Steven and
Chris Woods - it was a big jump to say
I was working at British Steel. I was soon
pretty comfortable in the environment
though; it was a great experience.”
Tom’s time at Rangers coincided with
three Scottish Premier League titles, a
Scottish Cup and a Scottish League Cup
success, but the defender was restricted
to just a handful of appearances in his
three seasons at Ibrox.
Now in his early 20s, the time was
right to test himself in England, but after
agreeing to sign for the Blades he would
endure a tough start as United began
the 1991-92 campaign stuck in first gear.
It would take a confidence boosting
success against Forest followed by a
Steel City derby win over Wednesday
to kick-start the campaign, with Tom
playing in both crucial games.
“I instantly loved it at United,”
confirmed the Bellshill-born ace.
“When I signed Vinnie Jones was
still the captain. We would sign Kevin
Gage, and we had some good players
like Brian Deane, Glyn Hodges, John
Gannon etc. Instantly, I realised what
a great team spirit there was, and
everyone got along.
“It was difficult at the start. For some
reason, it always seemed to click into
place when we played Nottingham
Forest. We had a great result against
them and then we really kicked
on from there.
“We also beat Wednesday and
I played in that one. It was something
like the first time we had met in the top
flight for 27 years. I’ve actually watched
the game back recently and it wasn’t the
best game in the world, but it doesn’t
matter, does it? It’s the result that
counts. It was good to play in that one.
The atmosphere was brilliant, similar to
Rangers vs Celtic but not quite as toxic!
It was great to play in.”
United really clicked into gear during
January and February eventually
finishing in ninth, something that was
only equalled in 2020, nearly 30
years later.
Tom looks back on his opening
season, where he made 24 appearances
in all competitions, with great pride,
noting the magnitude of what was
achieved despite such a sluggish start.
“Where we actually finished the
season, in ninth, it was a tremendous
achievement,” said Tom who was
competing mainly with David Barnes for
the left-back slot.
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs HUDDERSFIELD TOWN

58 UTB
FORMER PLAYER
“We knew we weren’t the best team in
the league, but we worked our socks off.
I think everyone was proud of the finish.
“I think that the spirit was the main
reason why we did so well. We had
talented players, but we weren’t as
good as half of the teams in that league,
it was the togetherness which set us
apart as a team.”
Tom played a major role again in the
following season, starring as United
defeated Manchester United in the
FA Cup as Bassett guided his side to
the semi-finals. The end of the cup
adventure would prove to be a sore
point for Tom who missed the semifinal
against Wednesday after picking
up an injury.
“We had some great results in that
season. I played in the cup win over
Manchester United, that was a terrific
day,” said Tom, who played 53 games
in all competitions during his time at
Bramall Lane.
“I remember that game really well and
I still have a picture of that game on the
wall in my house. The image is of me
taking a shot on the volley from outside
the area. I knew where the ball went but
when anyone asks when they see it,
I just tell them it was a great save, even
though it went miles over the bar!
“We made it all the way to the semifinals,
but I missed the game which was
really disappointing. We played Crystal
Palace 10 days before the semi, and
I just remember tweaking my hamstring
– nothing serious. We then had a
mid-week game against Coventry, and
I played. I also knew then we had seven
days off before the big game to get right.
I remember chasing big Micky Quinn;
I slid in and won the ball but as I did, I felt
my hamstring rip at the same time. I was
out for six weeks, and I was devastated
to miss the game.”
The arrival of Roger Nilsen for the
start of the following season would
signal the end for Tom’s United career,
and he took the option of loan switches
to both Stoke and Huddersfield. He
would then make a move to the latter
on a permanent basis, and whilst he
may have had reservations regarding
dropping down the pyramid, the move
to West Yorkshire gave his career a
shot in the arm.
“Roger Nilsen signed, and I knew
I wasn’t really in the plans, so I wanted to
get out and play,” said Tom, who would
go on to play for future Blades boss Neil
Warnock at Huddersfield.
“It was strange, I was playing pretty
regularly in the Premier League and
ended up dropping down to the third
tier, so initially that was a bit of a blow. It
turned into a good move though, we got
promoted with Huddersfield right away
and I had a great time there.”
Fast forward to March 1997 and Tom
would come back to haunt his former
employers. After earning promotion
to the second tier in 1995, he won the
Terriers’ Player of the Year award in 1996
after an impressive eighth placed finish.
S He would
enjoy covering
the Blades
for the Press
Association for
many years
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs HUDDERSFIELD TOWN

UTB 59
R Tom signed
for United
in 1991
By 1997 though, Huddersfield were
struggling near the bottom when United
visited the McAlpine Stadium in March.
With the Blades, now under Howard
Kendall, sat third just two points off
automatic promotion with six games
remaining, any potential surge into the
top two was about to be halted by one
of the unlikeliest of sources.
Paul Dalton had given Town the
lead before Lee Sinnott’s own goal
levelled the contest. Two minutes later
it was Tom’s header which restored
the advantage and Huddersfield hung
on for the points as United’s automatic
promotion charge crumbled.
“We were struggling that year and
United were doing well,” recalls Tom,
who never scored during his time
with the Blades.
“It was the first time I’d faced United
since I’d left but I didn’t think too much
about it in the build-up. I was perhaps a
little nervous before the game, but I do
remember the corner which resulted in
the goal. It was swung in from the right
side and I got up well. I was marked by
David White at the time, but I managed
to get above him and got a good
connection and it went in.
“I loved United, but I had a job to do
for Huddersfield and I was pleased with
the goal, I still have a picture of it.”
Tom picked up another Player of the
Year award in 1997 but a serious knee
injury effectively ended his spell with
Huddersfield with Rob Edwards taking
the left-back slot in his absence.
He would go on to have spells with
the likes of Burnley, Cambridge and
Carlisle amongst others before joining
Gretna to work in their community
department. After leaving the Scottish
side when they ran into financial trouble,
he returned to Sheffield to join the
fire service.
“I came back to Sheffield, playing nonleague,
and had a job reading meters for
a while and then I managed to get into
the fire service,” Tom, now 51, revealed.
“It was something I was interested in
when I initially moved here in 1991 and
my neighbour Glyn was a firefighter and
he really enjoyed it. It’s something I’ve
also really enjoyed doing too.”
He’s kept a keen eye on the Blades,
also working in the media covering
United games for the Press Association,
and will take a keen interest today as
two of his former sides meet.
“I’m really hopeful United can
make it straight back up this year,”
concluded Tom.
“I think if Huddersfield can build and
move themselves into some mid-table
stability, then that will be a good season
for them. They’ve made a lot of signings,
so that bodes well. United have
managed to keep most of the squad
together so that should stand them in
good stead. Fingers crossed for a good
season for both.”
BLADES FAN NICOLA PACKING A PUNCH
Boxer and Blade Nicola ‘Hurricane’ Hopewell is targeting
a European title next month after recently maintaining her
unbeaten streak with another stunning performance.
The Worksop fighter won her fourth professional bout after
stopping Spanish National Champion
Ivette Garcia in round six, and is now
set to fight for the World Boxing League
(WBL) European Super Flyweight title in
Brighton on September 4th.
“On the 4th September my first main
target is to win the WBL European
super flyweight title,” Nicola said.
“I have another fight in October
and, fingers crossed if all goes well,
I will be able to box for the interim
WIBA world title in December.”
After a strong amateur career,
Nicola has relished the prospect
of rising up the pro ranks as she
continues to go from strength-tostrength
“I had 32 amateur fights and
I boxed all the best people, including
GB squad members,” she added.
“But then I found I was boxing the
same people over and over again as
the pool was not massive. By 2019 we
already had one lad from the gym turn
pro – he was the first – and my coach
Chris Boyle suggested to me I could
go pro. I didn’t take much persuading.
“I didn’t expect to start my pro career so
well. I have always been known in the amateurs for throwing
fast flurries in phases, but I was never known for my power. It
just showed how much work I have done on my strength.”
Nicola, a big Blades fan, recently visited Bramall Lane to
ensure she’ll be showing off her allegiance to United at her
next fight. Good luck Nicola, and make sure you keep proudly
the club, and I also got a medal for
being in the squad. The build-up to
the game was amazing, and to just be
part of the team and see how some
of the lads prepared for a big game
was a privilege. Being in the squad
a moment I have waited for and one
which I enjoyed, scoring my first goal
for the Blades. I just remember having
to change direction after I scored so
I could celebrate with the fans! My family
were also sat there so that was a nice
moment. That’s one under my belt now,
hopefully I can go on now and get plenty
of goals in the league.”
CADBURY AND AVIVA PARTNERSHIP
Sheffield United Community
Foundation would like to
thank Cadbury and Aviva for
their contributions towards
funding our upcoming Ending
Forever Isolation project.
The project aims to support
people aged 65 and over
who have experienced
loneliness and isolation,
in which we aim to offer a
safe space that allows the
opportunity to meet new
people, expand their support
network, increase social skills
and confidence and most
importantly have fun and
enjoy themselves.
HOME INSTEAD PARTNERSHIP
We are also excited to
announce that Home Instead
will be our delivery partner for
the project. Home Instead is
been an extremely tough 18
months for us all, which has
really shone a light on how
loneliness and periods of
isolation can impact people.
“Due to this, a lot of people
in our community have lost the
confidence to do everyday
tasks that we all enjoy. Thanks
to Cadbury and Aviva, we are
In Memoriam...
Nick Tryon
Gone too soon. Nick Tryon, lifelong Blade
and member of the Disabled Supporters
Club, sadly passed away this June due to
cancer. His other family would like to thank
all Nick’s SUFC family for their kind thoughts
and wishes. It was heart-warming at such
a difficult time to hear the outpouring of
love and respect for him. Phrases like ‘once
met never forgotten’ and he was a ‘special
edition’ are some that have been repeated
more than once. We were also touched by
the warmth from the club itself and they
couldn’t have done more to accommodate
a last visit to the ground on the day of
his funeral. Nick’s family live far and wide
but Sheffield United will always have a
special place in our hearts. Thank you all.
TRANSFER
TRAIL
In every edition of UTB this season, DAVE BURKINSHAW looks
back on a significant transfer involving the Blades...
BLADES BREAK THE NATIONAL TRANSFER RECORD AGAIN!
Following the ending of WWI in
November 1918 the regular
Football League season
restarted in 1919/20. An aging United
team finished that season in a
disappointing 14th place in the
First Division.
The following season, 1920/21, was
even worse with relegation looking a
strong possibility. United needed to
revamp their team and
looked to the transfer
market to achieve this. As
with many teams throughout
the history of the game the
rebuild was achieved with
the sale of a star player.
In this case United sold
forward Stan Fazackerley,
who had not recaptured the
form he had shown pre-war.
In fairness to United Stan
had asked for a transfer. He
was sold to Everton for £4K in
November 1920 making him
United’s record sale, and at
the time, this was the highest fee paid by
any professional club in the UK.
As with some earlier transfer dealings
where high fees had been paid, the FA
were not happy with how the move had
come about and they carried out an
enquiry into the deal, especially the role
Stan had played.
R David Mercer scored all six against United
in an abandoned game in 1919
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs HUDDERSFIELD TOWN

UTB 69
United quickly re-invested the money
they had received by purchasing two
wingers to add more potency to their
attack. In December 1920 they paid
Scunthorpe United £1K for their leftwinger
Fred Tunstall and then once
again broke the UK transfer record with
the purchase of Hull City right winger
David Mercer. A fee of between £4.25K
and £4.5K was paid for Mercer.
Mercer had especially caught the
eyes of United when in January 1919 he
had played for Hull against the Blades
in the war-time league competition. City
were beating United 6-1 in that game
when it had to be abandoned after 70
minutes with Mercer having scored all
six of City’s goals!
R Fred
Tunstall went
on to play 437
league games
for United
David was a fast and skilful player
with excellent dribbling skills earning
nicknames such as ‘twinkling feet’.
He was also powerfully built and hard
to knock off the ball. He was a good
provider of chances and one of the
beneficiaries of
his talent was
Tunstall on the
other flank.
David went
on to play for
England twice
and also for the
Football League
representative
team. Along
with Tunstall he
helped United
avoid relegation
at the end of the
1920/21 season
and then helped
to maintain
their First
Division status.
Both players
subsequently
helped United
win the FA Cup
in 1925 for the
fourth and to
date the last
time. Although
United had paid
a record fee for Mercer it proved to
be and good deal by the Blades. He
played 223 league games and scored
22 goals for the club in addition to the
cup success.
The Blades later signed his brother
Arthur and the two Mercers played
in same United team on a number
of occasions. Whilst the Mercer deal
proved to be a good one for United,
Fred Tunstall was arguably an even
better signing scoring 129 goals in 437
league games and scoring the winning
goal in the 1925 FA Cup final.
INTRODUCTION...
After flirting with relegation
from the Championship last
season, the challenge for
Terriers head coach Carlos
Corberan is to push for more
in the months ahead.
Spanish tactician Corberan
has had a year to build his
experience in the Huddersfield
hot-seat and he is confident
long-term that the building
blocks are in place to ensure
progress can be made.
After only recently enjoying
a two-year stint in the Premier
League, there’s hope that,
given time, Corberan can
replicate some of the success
he enjoyed in this league
as part of Marcelo Bielsa’s
coaching team at Leeds
United, to help proper Town
back to their recent glory days.
Town showed their
capabilities on their day last
season by beating Premier
League bound Watford and
play-off finalists Swansea
(twice) as Corberan looks for
more consistency to take the
club forward in 2021/22.
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs HUDDERSFIELD TOWN

72 UTB
MANAGER...
CARLOS CORBERAN
After arriving at Huddersfield as something
of an unknown quantity last summer, Carlos
Corberan is now very much accustomed to life
in English football.
His first season in charge of Huddersfield
was played out amid the global pandemic
and in stadiums lacking the vital ingredient
of supporters, so the Spanish tactician was
relieved to have had time to work with his
players ahead of this campaign as he looks to
improve on last term’s 20th place finish.
“It was a positive build-up to the season
because we had enough time to continue
developing the players that we want to
develop, especially the time to do it in the right
way,” he stated.
“We focused a lot of work on progressing
in the right way. Sometimes you aren’t always
making the progression in the right direction,
and you try very fast to get the right intensity
in the team. Performing at this level means
you’re at risk of injuries, but now I think that the
pre-season has been fantastic in this balance
between the performance we are looking for
and the risk of long-term injury.
“It’s important for the players to do a lot of
work in their recovery sessions and in their
minds. We didn’t miss any players during preseason,
and so this has been very positive.”
Corberan, 38, moved into coaching after his
hopes of making it as a player came to an end
when he failed to break into the Valencia first
team set-up.
Spells in charge of sides in the Cypriot league
proceeded a stint as Leeds under-23 boss,
where he developed a solid reputation as a
tactician worthy of respect as he caught the eye
of Leeds first team boss Marcelo Bielsa.
The chance to take over as Huddersfield
boss in July 2020 was too good to turn down
and while last weekend’s 5-1 defeat at home
against Fulham was a blow to Corberan’s hopes
of getting this season off to a fast start, he is
convinced he has a squad to deliver success
this campaign.
His ambitions in the opening weeks of this
season have been affected by positive cases
of Covid-19 in his camp and he missed the first
game of the season himself as he was isolating,
but he is keen to promote positivity despite
some setbacks.
“I have full confidence with the squad we
have,” he continues, after a summer that saw
him add a host of new faces to his playing pool,
including the signing of striker Jordan Rhodes.
“The players we have here are better able
to solve situations like we saw against Fulham
and what we need to do is understand the
responsibility we have to take.
“It is important to be a mature team, to
understand how to react after you score a goal
and concede a goal. This is about experience,
and we will find a way to improve.”
Greatest Day
CHAMPIONSHIP PLAY-OFF FINAL
HUDDERSFIELD TOWN 0 READING 0
29th MAY 2017 *Huddersfield Town won 4-3 on penalties
The golden era in Huddersfield Town’s history
dates back to days when Herbert Chapman
was their inspirational manager in the 1920s,
yet the modern Terriers fan base will never
forget a golden day at Wembley a little over
four years ago.
The prospect of Huddersfield taking their
place in the Premier League seemed distant
when David Wagner took over as the club’s
manager in November 2015, yet the German
took the club to the brink of the promised land
at the end of his first full season at the helm.
A win against Sheffield Wednesday in the
Championship play-off semi-finals paved the
way for a clash against Reading in the final,
with the golden ticket to the richest league in
world football decided by a dramatic penalty
shoot-out.
Christopher Schindler took the decisive spotkick
as Huddersfield held their nerve in a game
that had so much resting on it, with Wagner
reflecting on the moment with real pride.
“If someone told me we would secure our
Championship status in my first season, get
promoted and staying in the Premier League
for two years - I would’ve told them to wake
up from the dream, but it happened,” reflected
Wagner, who left his role mid-way through the
club’s second season in the top flight, which
ultimately ended in relegation.
“We had to change so many things to make
dreams into reality and we had the incredible
day at Wembley and then the first season in the
Premier League was amazing. I will always be
proud of what we achieved.”
Beating Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United
during their first season in the Premier League
was another day to be stored in the memory
banks for Huddersfield fans, with the Wagner
days certain to retain a special place in the
hearts of all Terriers supporters.
AGE CONCESSION
TICKET CHECKS
IN OPERATION
Sheffield United would like
to remind supporters that
age concession checks will
be in operation in advance
of entry to Bramall Lane
at EVERY fixture in the
forthcoming months.
The club is aware that
previously adults have
knowingly gained entry into
the stadium by using the
incorrect band of season
ticket or match ticket and are
therefore gaining admittance
in a fraudulent manner. As a
result, club stewards are now
being instructed to check
season cards and match
tickets at turnstiles before fans
will be allowed to proceed.
The Blades will continue
to take a belligerent stance
regarding this issue and any
supporters found attempting
to gain entry using a ticket
category which is not correct
will have their match ticket or
season card confiscated with
no refunds issued and they
will also be prevented from
obtaining entry to the stadium
for future games.
Those in possession of
an age-related concession
ticket must have suitable ID
with proof of age, for example
a passport, birth certificate,
driving license or other
relevant documentation.
At Bramall Lane,
concessionary season tickets
and match tickets may both
be upgraded for individual
games. These upgrades,
where supporters simply pay
the difference in advance of
entering the stadium, can be
done in person at the ticket
office or over the phone by
calling 0114 2537 200 then
selection option 1.
It should be noted that it
is a criminal offence to try
and enter the stadium on a
concession ticket when the
supporter is not within the
stated age bracket.
Giving Football Back to
Small Business
At eBay, we know small business and
football clubs used to be like chips and
gravy, two peas in a pod – a match
made in community heaven.
Ironmongers, ship workers, spring
makers and cobblers, all formed clubs
which decades later are still prospering.
But nowadays, you’d think it was all
eyewatering transfers, Super Leagues
and mega sponsors, detached from the
humble origins of our historic clubs.
That’s why eBay are proud to support
300,000 small businesses who help
power EFL clubs nationwide. We’ll be
donating our advertising space to a lot
of these businesses – on match day
hoardings, around grounds and beyond –
throughout the coming season, to ensure
they can continue to thrive in our local
communities. So, join us in giving your
support to Small Business Power, because
today, they need us more than ever.
FORGOTTEN GROUNDS
Leeds Road
Opened: 1908 Closed: 1994
Each week UTB looks back over a stadium from the past to discover
United’s first, last and most memorable performance...
× THE GROUND…
Huddersfield began life at
Leeds Road in 1908 but to
develop the ground and
gain entry to the Football
League, they hired renowned
architect Archibald Leitch who
designed a 4,000 seated main
stand and a partly covered
Leeds Road End terrace. In
the 1920s, the Leeds Road
End was given a new barrel
shaped wooden roof, taking
on the nickname of the
Cowshed. The East Stand
terrace (Popular Terrace) was
extended and eventually
roofed in 1955, whilst the
Dalton Bank terrace was also
extended to boost capacity.
In 1950 the wooden main
stand was destroyed by fire
but was replaced with a stand
made from concrete and
metal, whilst the ‘50s also saw
R Leeds Road was home to Huddersfield Town for 86 years
Leeds Road boast the first
electronic scoreboard in the
country which was installed
in Dalton Bank End. In the
decades to follow the lack
of updates saw the ground
begin to decline. Capacity
was gradually reduced due to
increased safety regulations
and restrictions falling from
52,000 to 31,000 and then
finally, 16,000. The Cowshed
UTB 91
was deemed unfit and closed
for two years, but Leeds
Road did break new ground
in the ‘80s with the stadium’s
pioneering colour CCTV
system which helped convict
‘fans’ putting Town at the
forefront of reducing the threat
of hooliganism. Following
the Taylor Report, and with a
ground which was terraced
on three sides, a decision
was made to move to a new
stadium on a site next door,
with Huddersfield hosting
football at Leeds Road for the
final time in 1994.
× FIRST UNITED VISIT…
The Blades made a first visit
to Leeds Road back in 1913
for an FA Cup tie. In fact, they
made two visits as the first one
had to be abandoned after
75 minutes due to snow with
United in front! Huddersfield
won the rearranged game 3-1
with United’s Bobby Evans
suffering injury for most of the
replay. Billy Gillespie netted
for the Blades.
× LAST UNITED VISIT…
By the time Huddersfield left
Leeds Road in 1994, the two
clubs had been in different
leagues for six years. In
1988/89 both sides were in
the third tier, but United’s
last game at Leeds Road was
actually an FA Cup tie in the
same campaign. Huddersfield
had won the league game
3-2 in November ’88, but the
Blades exacted revenge in
January ’89. After dispatching
Mansfield and Doncaster to
make it into the third round,
a solitary Tony Agana strike
was enough to take United
into round four.
R Leeds Road would eventually be redeveloped into a retail park
R View from outside ahead of the final game against Blackpool in 1994
× MEMORABLE GAME…
The 1960/61 season was a
memorable one from a United
perspective as the club
achieved a second-placed
finish and promotion to the
First Division. Three wins and
a draw from the opening five
games suggested United
would be strong contenders
and this was underlined further
in game six. On a Wednesday
night in September 1960, the
Blades travelled to Leeds
Road and recorded a 1-0
victory thanks to a goal from
Frank Nibloe.
× WHAT HAPPENED NEXT…
After Huddersfield’s 2-1 victory
over Blackpool in front of just
over 16,000 fans in April 1994,
football at Leeds Road was no
more. During the final stages
of Huddersfield’s tenure, the
sights of the banana shaped
roofs of the new stadium could
be seen from the old ground
as the then McAlpine Stadium
was starting to take shape
close by. Leeds Road was
soon demolished after Town
vacated and was redeveloped
as a retail park. There is a
plaque in the car park where
the centre spot once was to
commemorate the site’s past.
Stats All Folks
Blades statistician ANDREW KIRKHAM delves into the archives to enlighten Unitedites with topical figures…
A LOOK BACK AT 2020-21 × PART 2
Phil Jagielka, Oli Burke and Oli
McBurnie were all subbed subs, the
first time we have had three
since 2002/03.
Our 20 league goals were scored by nine
Blades, and Chelsea’s Antonio Rudiger. David
McGoldrick (8 – 40% of the total) was top
scorer, including two in one game, with Billy
Sharp (3) and Jayden Bogle (2) also getting
more than one. David McGoldrick became only
the fifth Blade to score 40% or more of our
league goals in a season.
We were awarded five penalties. Billy Sharp
(3 - one in the FA Cup) and Sander Berge (1)
scored. John Lundstram’s attempt was saved.
Five goals were scored by substitutes. Billy
Sharp and Oli Burke (one in the FA Cup) scored
twice and Jayden Bogle once. Two of these
games were drawn and three won.
We kept five clean sheets (all 1-0 victories)
and failed to score in 21 league games. For the
first time since 2014/15 we had no 0-0 draws.
We failed to do a league double but avoided
defeat against Brighton and Hove Albion. 11
clubs did the league double over us, four more
than the previous highest in 1967/68.
John Egan, John Lundstram and Phil Jagielka
were shown the red card as were two of
our opponents.
We lost at the first attempt in the EFL Cup,
4-5 on a penalty shoot-out. This was our fourth
successive shoot-out loss, the last victory being
at Hartlepool in September 2015. We reached
round six in the FA Cup using 20 players in the
four games. David McGoldrick and Billy Sharp
(2) were amongst the cup scorers bringing
their respective goal totals to 9 and 5. Wes
Foderingham made his club debut and one
appearance in the EFL Cup.
Only four games had fans present, three
away with a total of 14,000 and our final home
game with around 5,000. We played games on
every day of the week but Friday. We played
14 league games on Saturdays and 14 on
Sundays. Including cup games, the totals were
respectively 16 and 15.
Jayden Bogle scored on his United league
debut, which was also his Premier League
debut, and his goal against Bristol Rovers was
our 600th in the FA Cup.
Chris Basham, Billy Sharp and Phil Jagielka
reached 300 competitive games for the Blades,
John Fleck his 200th. John Egan made his first
sub appearance.
R Chris Basham passed 300 competitive
United games last season
