Watch any toddler at play, and you’ll see
creativity in action. They twirl, dance, sing
made-up songs, they scribble with their
crayons, never worrying about the outcome.
If given the opportunity, kids will create.
As parents, it’s up to us to provide those
opportunities. That’s what this issue is all
about–opportunities for engaging in the arts.
To inspire you, there are articles about the
benefits of parent/child art projects (page 16),
tips on integrating music in your family (page 22), reasons why you
should consider dance classes for your child (page 24), and creative
products that we love (page 26). On page 28, Jennie Blevins profiles
four local moms who turned their crafts into businesses (during the
pandemic, no less!).
In other big news this month, our Family Favorites nominations
open on September 1. You have two weeks to nominate your
favorites in various categories (see the list on page 7 or at
MontereyBayParent.com). The final three in each category will
be announced in our October issue, and voting for the winners
opens on October 1. It’s a big deal for a business or organization
to be named “Monterey Bay Family Favorite,” so please take a few
minutes to nominate your faves.
Finally, our Cover Kids Contest closes on September 15. Every
entrant will receive a ticket to MY Museum and a treat from Kona
Ice. This is the only way your child will appear on our cover, and
this year we’ve opened things up for families to enter as well. Head
