A-Frame Chapel Renovation Begins
The A-Frame Chapel has long been a place of holy
ground for campers at Camp Hebron. Many are
pointed to Jesus by its simple yet inspiring white cross.
Construction on the new chapel/pavilion began in late
March and is expected to be completed by the end of
May. It has been wonderful to see the generosity of
folks whose lives were impacted in this simple place
of reflection and worship over the years. We look forward
to having future generations blessed as well.
Dedication for the A-Frame Chapel/Pavilion will be held on August 18 in conjunction with the Family
Camp-In-A-Day event. A chicken BBQ will follow the dedication. Tickets must be purchased in advance
and may be ordered online at www.camphebron.org or by calling the office at 717-896-3441.
Scholarships Available Thanks to Generosity of Friends
Every child will benefit from a life-changing week of fun, fellowship and
relationship with Christ through Camp. In these difficult financial times it has
become increasingly difficult for families to make this possible. Campers will
be blessed this year by several significant
donations that have increased the
availability of Scholarship funds.
In October the children and churches
of the Atlantic Coast Conference of the
Mennonite Church contributed $4,000
to the Scholarship Fund through their
“Nickels for Neighbors” campaign.
Throughout the year they collect pocket
change and then bring it as a love offering
to their annual meeting. We are so grateful for this generous gift.
Each year for the last several years the fund has also received a very significant gift from a family
foundation. In addition the annual benefit Golf tournament typically brings in $12,000-$14,000.
If you would like to apply for scholarship funds or know of someone who could benefit from
them, applications for scholarship funds may be downloaded at http://www.camphebron.org/scholarship.htm,
or call the office (717-896-3441) and we can send the forms to you.
Group envisions New Stable/Indoor Arena
Horses and Camp have been a key association throughout
the history of Camp. The current stable, like many of
Camp’s older buildings, while serving us well over the
years, is now in need of a significant ‘face-lift.’ Funds are
tight and an intrepid group of faithful horsemanship supporters
have taken on the joyful task of raising the needed
funds to build a new barn with the addition of an indoor
riding arena in the current paddock area.
The indoor arena will allow us to truly be a year round horsemanship program. We are currently
offering lessons, trail rides, scout badges and specialized programs with at-risk youth. However,
too often these are canceled due to weather and poor footing on the trails. This new arena will allow
us to expand both our ministry and the financial resources for this valued program.
We are hoping to complete this project with ‘new’ money. This means we do not wish to divert
funds that would ordinarily
go to some other aspect of the
Camp’s ministry. However,
if you can get excited about
this project and wish to make
a gift, you may designate it to
“Build-the-Barn”. We will also
welcome help in raising the
funds. Contact Dean Berger at
you would like to join the team.
Introducing the A-TeAM!
We are excited to announce that God has brought together a great
leadership team for Summer 2012. We would like to introduce
them to you so you can begin to pray for them by name. Each
program needs a dynamic leader. We will have three great Summer
Program Directors (SPD’s). They are Heidi Long, Phil Yoder, and
Matt Bair. Heidi and Phil have served as Counselors at Hebron and
are student leaders at Eastern Mennonite University. Matt, also a
Hebron Counselor, is a recent Shippensburg graduate and currently
a substitute teacher. Planning and carrying out recreation requires
a great deal of energy and creativity. We will look to Recreation
Directors Nolan Livengood and Brittany Tietje for that. Nolan
has served as a Counselor and now attends the Lancaster campus
of HACC. Brittany (former Counselor and Nature Instructor) is
a student leader at Slippery Rock. Our worship times will be led
by former Counselor and current Messiah College student, Eric
Snader. Caleb Snoke, after hanging out in the Rocky Mountains,
returns to our poolside as the Waterfront Director. Recent Messiah
College graduate and former Counselor, Barbara Gillespie, will
serve as the Program Director’s Assistant. Dean Sauder, teacher
at Lancaster Mennonite High School, will once again head up our
Camp Pastor team along with Taylor University Senior and former
SPD, Ben Byler and first time staffer and HACC graduate Laurel
Keener. We are in the process of hiring a new Day Camp Director.
They will be assisted by volunteer SPD Caleb Jablonski. He has
served as Counselor and Worship Director. He is a Grove City College
Graduate and recently has held a teaching position in Alaska.
Join us in prayer for this wonderful group who are eager to serve
Camp and see Christ glorified this summer.
Most families who attend family camp come back every year. One family camper said, “We were more excited when
we drove into camp then when we went to Disney World.” So what’s so great about family camp? Find out for yourself
boating, creek stomp, duck parade and more.
Activities begin at 9:00 a.m. with the dedication of the A-Frame Chapel/Pavilion at 11:00 a.m. followed by a Chicken
BBQ. (Tickets must be purchased in advance) At 4:00 p.m. enjoy the 3rd annual Ducky Derby Race. Get your 2012
Recently a group of us ventured onto the Peters Mountain Trail – destination Table Rock. As we maneuvered our way
up the rocky path I began to ponder the similarities of this quest with the journey of life. There are many diversions
but at the same time there is a narrow way, with clear markings to keep you on course that will guide you to the top.
The Psalmist describes the scripture in this same light. “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.” (Psalm
119:105 )
A few times I veered off the path and ran into problems with brambles, holes and even faced the risk of stepping
on a snake. I found it most helpful, along with watching my step, to keep my eyes on the trail blaze. I also stopped
from time to time to enjoy the wonders of creation all around me.
Along the way I encountered several “signs” of encouragement (scriptures posted along the trail). I also became aware of evidence that
others had gone before and prepared the way. (Hebrews 12:1) Noteworthy were the fallen trees sawn in two to open the path and
places where the trail had been built up, making it easier to traverse.
My hiking pals added encouragement and support as we overcame obstacles and achieved the desired outcome together. Alone, I
might have been tempted to turn back as I peered up the steep, seemingly endless path to the pinnacle. However, we persevered and
climbed on. Halfway up I was truly encouraged by the posting of Isaiah 40:29, “He gives strength to the weary and increases the power
of the weak.” Yes! What an exhilaration to reach the top and enjoy the beautiful vista. And then, as in all of life, we journeyed off the
mountaintop back to the valley where we continue to serve Him wherever He leads.
