We’re all superheroes
fighting this pandemic together
Yes, we’ve all been superheroes navigating
our way through the uncharted waters
of this pandemic for the past 18 months.
By wearing a mask where warranted,
maintaining social distancing and
following critical health and safety
guidelines, you’ve worked hard to keep
your friends and family safe. Just like the
JCC has worked tirelessly to keep our
members, visitors, staff and community
safe by implementing appropriate
protocols. It’s been a very draining and
wild ride, and we’re not out of the woods
yet, but we’re getting there and we’ll
continue to do so by working together.
Thank you for your commitment to
the JCC and working with us to keep our
campus community and the community
at large safe. Your support during
these trying times—whether through
membership, registering your children in
our programs or making a tax-deductible
donation—has been tremendous and much
appreciated. Working together has brought
out the best superhero qualities in all of us.
For the latest information on current
COVID-19 protocols at the JCC, visit our
website www.jccsyr.org. If you have any
questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate
to contact us at 315-445-2360 or
A note about our photos...
Some people pictured in this issue are not wearing masks because of different
COVID-19 protocols at the time or the photos were taken pre-pandemic.
2021 KlezFest CNY postponed until next year
The organizers of KlezFest
CNY, sponsored by the
Jewish Federation of Central
New York, have postponed
this year’s September 19
music festival to Sunday,
September 18, 2022. This
tough decision was made
out of an abundance of
caution to help protect the
health and safety of the community due
to the rapidly spreading COVID-19 Delta
variant. The organizers thank the artists,
sponsors and vendors who recently signed
on and appreciate their understanding
and flexibility as the festival works to
come back bigger and better next year. For
questions about the 2022 KlezFest CNY,
please contact the JCC of Syracuse at
315-445-2360 or pjcny@jccsyr.org.
Supporting Your Center
315-445-2360 | www.jccsyr.org
The JCC of Syracuse is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Your continued
financial contributions, gifts, grants and endowments allow us to serve
you, your family and the larger community six days per week, year round.
Funds raised are critical to daily operations, special programming, future
development and improvements, and scholarships and financial aid.
End-of-year donation
Public support is imperative to the JCC of
Syracuse’s survival. The center depends on
these donations for a full 7% of its annual
budget. Information about making a taxdeductible,
end-of-year contribution will
be sent out in late fall.
Matching gifts
Many area companies have matching gift
programs, which encourage charitable
giving by their employees. Under these
programs, companies match gifts—often
dollar for dollar or even two dollars to
one—that individuals make to nonprofit,
tax-exempt organizations. Your gift to
the JCC may qualify. Please check with
your employer to determine eligibility
requirements.
Tribute cards
To commemorate special occasions,
including births, birthdays, graduations,
anniversaries, marriages, Bar or Bat
Mitzvah, or to celebrate and honor
the memory of a loved one, the JCC
welcomes tax-deductible gifts to one of
our many endowment or special funds.
(See the tributes on page 26.) The JCC
will send an acknowledgement card to the
individual (or next of kin) in whose name
the contribution is made. Tribute cards
recognize someone special and help the
JCC. For more information, contact Erin
Hart at 315-445-2040, ext. 112.
Volunteer
An agency such as the JCC is dependent
on the enthusiasm and willingness of
community members who volunteer their
time and talents. Volunteers are invaluable
in bringing vital perspective, experience,
community and manpower to complement
those of our staff members.
Senior Adult Dining Program
Our Bobbi Epstein Lewis Senior Adult
Dining Program (see page 21) offers
seniors a hot, nutritious kosher meal
five days a week at a very affordable
price. It’s our way of “giving back” to
local seniors who form the foundation
of our community. You can help
keep this valuable program going by
making a contribution or becoming a
sponsor of our monthly senior newsletter.
For more information, contact
Erin Hart at 315-445-2040, ext. 112.
Jewish Federation of CNY
The JCC of Syracuse is a beneficiary
agency of the Jewish Federation of
Central New York. The JCC receives
funding from the Federation and
works in close partnership with it to
provide the Jewish community with
essential programs and services.
JCC families and members can help
by giving generously to the Jewish
Federation of CNY campaign.
easier
JCC made virtual learning
The Club J All Day program, which ended in June,
was one of the JCC’s many innovative responses
to helping families during the pandemic.
Starting in March of 2020, when the pandemic first hit,
families were forced to figure out how to work and learn,
all from home. When virtual leaning began, no one could
imagine the toll this would take on the children and their
education and emotional health. Often working parents
struggled to continue their children’s learning while also
working to provide for the family.
The Sam Pomeranz Jewish Community Center saw
how difficult this was for working families and knew
it needed to provide some type of programming. We
were one of the only
local summer camps
to operate with all the
COVID restrictions
during the summer of
2020. The new safety
measures and protocols were intense, but with dedicated
staff we were successfully able to operate a seven-week
camp program for children. Both the children and the
parents needed this program, not only for the children’s
wellbeing and mental health, but so the parents could
continue to work.
By August of 2020 New York State announced the new
mandates for schools and the dreaded hybrid learning
idea came to fruition. Parents were at a loss of what to do.
Both their child’s education and the ability to continue
to work and provide for their families was at stake. Many
jobs require
parents to leave
the house or,
if working
remotely, do
not allow
time for much
assistance with
the demands of
virtual leaning.
The JCC’s
mission is to
provide quality
programs to fit the needs of its families and we soon
realized those needs were dramatically changing. The
children’s programming team came together last year
and was able to start a new program called Club J All
Day. This program allowed children from the Jamesville-
DeWitt School District to attend virtually on days when
not physically in school. Trained staff were onsite and
worked with the children to adapt to virtual learning
and support them through this new school structure.
It seemed like a win-win for many families. Not only
would their child be supported while virtual learning
they would also get some social interactions with other
children going through the same thing.
To say Club J All Day was difficult was an
understatement. Children are not meant to sit in
front of a screen all day to learn. They crave the faceto-face
engagement and interaction that expands on
their learning. JCC staff were amazed at the children’s
resiliency as they continued to adapt and staff worked to
motivate them.
When the JCC heard the news last spring that the
school district was beginning to bring back its students
in-person full time it was bittersweet. The JCC staff knew
getting back to school was best for the children’s learning,
but they had created their own “school” and worked
together through the hard times. JCC staffers would miss
helping the children each day but were excited to still get
to be a part of their day during the JCC’s After School
Program.
Isabella Balash, 3rd grader at Moses DeWitt
elementary school said it best when on her last Club J
day last spring she stated, “School will be good, but I will
miss coming to Club J.” Children returning to school
in-person full time is a step in the right direction for
hopefully getting back to our new normal soon. In the
meantime, the JCC will continue to change and adapt to
meet the needs of its families and the community at large.
How to Register
Registration for the 2021-2022 school year
has been ongoing, and space is typically
very limited. Each new school year requires
registration. When a class is filled, based on
New York State licensing requirements, a
wait list is developed. Once the school year
begins, children are admitted from the wait
list on a space-available basis.
There is a $36 wait list reservation fee.
This does not guarantee placement in a
classroom. We will notify you if a placement
becomes available, and you will have 48
hours to accept the placement.
Withdrawals, changes
Enrollment in ECDP is a commitment to
our 10-month school year which consists
of three sessions: September–November,
December–February and March–June. Any
withdrawals or enrollment changes must be
made 30 days before the start of a session.
For more information, and to schedule a
tour, please call us at 315-445-2040, ext. 120.
Infant Level
We offer the highest quality of care to our
youngest members in the Syracuse area. To
maintain a developmentally appropriate
environment for our infants, they are
separated by age.
The ECDP provides a responsive
environment that supports and encourages
exploration through a variety of classroom
routines and experiences. Infant caregivers
We are committed to developing the social, emotional, physical
and intellectual well being of each child, allowing them to grow and
flourish as productive members of the community. Our
Hours
Monday–Friday
7 am – 6 pm
focus on daily routines such as hellos and
goodbyes, diapering and toileting, feeding,
dressing and soothing to sleep as part of
the curriculum. These one-on-one routines
help to build positive relationships between
infant and caregiver, promoting trust and
allowing infants to feel secure in their
environment.
Once infants have developed a
trusting relationship with their caregivers
they will start to gain new skills and
participate more actively in daily routines.
The teachers are then able to provide
intentional indoor and outdoor experiences
that allow children to learn while imitating
and pretending, connecting with music
and movement, exploring with sand and
water and creating with art.
emphasis is on helping children become independent,
self-confident, inquisitive and enthusiastic learners.
Toddler Level
• Must be 18-months old by September 9, 2021
Toddler children are at an age when they
establish secure attachments with their
caregivers more quickly and are now eager
to experience their world. They react to
what they experience through their senses
and physical activity. ECDP teachers
provide intentional experiences for
toddlers through a variety of indoor and
outdoor experiences.
Learning materials that match the
children’s growing abilities and interests
are provided and the children start to
explore objects and begin to use them
purposefully. While playing with toys,
imitating and pretending, exploring
sand and water, creating with art and
going outdoors, the toddlers learn to
communicate and socialize with peers and
adults, to think mathematically and to
discover like scientists.
Toddlers start to enjoy special
programming outside of the classroom
setting, such as Toddler Tango and gym
class. Toddlers are placed into classrooms
according to their chronological age.
Children do not need to be toilet trained,
and when appropriate, toilet training will
be incorporated into one of the goals for
your child.
Three-Year Old Level
• Must be age 3 by December 1, 2021
With kindergarten just two years away,
this is an important time for every child
to learn that the world is bigger than
imagined. Children learn new skills
and concepts through our thematic,
hands-on approach to learning. Daily
activities are carefully planned to
promote children’s social, emotional and
cognitive development. Our teachers are
trained to recognize differences in rates
of development within this age group,
and individualize
instruction to
meet every child’s
needs. Materials
and activities are
appropriately tailored
in an effort to
challenge children’s
abilities while
building their selfconfidence.
Throughout the
year, children will
discover the wonder
of the world they live in. All of our threeyear
olds are actively engaged in group
discussions, long-term studies, sensory
play, cooking, process art and more. Our
three-year olds are reading stories, singing
songs and playing their way through the
day. We also tailor gym time with our
specialized gym instructor to the needs of
our three-year olds. We play outside every
day, weather permitting, on our beautiful
fenced-in playgrounds.
With all of these wonderful
activities happening in our three-year
old classrooms, the Early Childhood
Development Program provides a well
rounded and positive learning experience
for your child.
Pre-K Level
• Must be age 4 by December 1, 2021
Our oldest children explore the world
through our hands-on, developmentally
appropriate
approach to
learning. We
include both
child initiated
play and
teacher-directed
academic
experiences on
a daily basis.
Planned lessons
and activities
allow teachers
to informally
and continually assess each child in order
to effectively modify and individualize
instruction.
Academically, we focus on exposing
children to the skills and concepts needed
to succeed in kindergarten. This includes
creative expression, math and reading
readiness, along with fine and gross motor
skill development to help each child learn,
grow and succeed. Each classroom is also
equipped with a SMART board where the
children are engaged in daily interactive
lessons which promote creativity and
critical thinking.
Children at the Pre-K level attend field
trips which coincide with what they are
learning. In the fall our classes will visit
the apple and pumpkin farms. Later in the
school year the teachers will plan specific
trips per their curriculums.
FUNDRAISERS
Square One Art
In October the Early Childhood
Department will be raising money using
your child’s artwork! Parents can purchase
coffee mugs, key chains, T-shirts and
magnets that express their little one’s
creativity. Order forms will be in your
child’s mailbox.
PJ Library
PJ Library in CNY (PJ for pajamas), a JCC
of Syracuse program, holds a monthly
PJ Library day in ECDP. Children are
encouraged to wear their pajamas to school
when the PJ Library coordinator visits to
read stories, sing songs and plan activities
with the children. PJ Library offers free,
high-quality Jewish books and music each
month to parents raising Jewish children
ages six months to eight years all across
North America.
JCC wraps up another successful summer camp season
315-445-2360 | www.jccsyr.org
With the relaxing of COVID-19
restrictions at the start of this summer,
things finally began to feel more “normal”
again for the Sam Pomeranz Jewish
Community Center’s summer camp.
Hundreds of campers ranging in age from
infants to school-age children—including
many new faces—descended upon the
JCC campus from June 28 – August 20 for
the JCC’s Camp Joe and Lynne Romano.
After last year’s “pandemic summer,” the
children were excited to get back to being
children again. “We were extremely pleased
this summer to offer more offsite specialty
camps for school-age children, schedule
several outdoor field trips to public places
after not offering any last summer, and to
bring back our teen Counselor in Training
(CIT) and Camp Aide programs,” said
Pamela Ranieri, JCC director of children’s
programming. From arts and crafts, games
and swimming to water fun and more,
there were plenty of laughs and excitement
to go around
for all JCC
campers.
Free nutrition counseling for seniors at the JCC
Want to eat healthier to be healthier? If
you’re age 60 or older or a caregiver for
a senior, you are eligible to receive free
nutrition counseling at the JCC.
Nutrition counseling
appointments are available the
third Monday of every month
from 11 a.m. to noon and from
1–2 p.m. Registered Dietitian
Laurie Zirilli, MA, RD, CDN,
is a consulting dietitian for the
Onondaga County Office for
Aging and will provide this service at the
JCC.
Whether you are newly diagnosed with
an illness that requires you to alter your
eating habits, or just need to discuss proper
nutrition, Zirilli is available
to help. Again, there is no
charge for this service, however
voluntary contributions are
accepted and appreciated.
A nutrition counseling
appointment is required to meet
with Zirilli. To schedule an
appointment, contact Cindy
Stein at 315-445-2040, ext. 104, or email
cstein@jccsyr.org.
Do you know how to “Google” something,
setup your email or keep track of
appointments using an online calendar? If
you’d like to become more proficient with
these skills and many more computer, tablet
or smartphone tools, then look to the JCC
of Syracuse.
Starting in November we’ll be rolling
out our “Digital Basics” classes to help
adults and seniors of any age become
more proficient and confident in their use
of technology. Each class will focus on a
different aspect of your digital life—from
Web browsing and email, to contacts and
calendars. Learn what “The Cloud” is and
how to best organize and find your files.
The first set of Digital Basics classes will
focus on using Google’s free software as
an intro into the digital world with no
extra purchase cost needed. Learn simple
tricks and workflows that will help save
you time and frustration. Look for future
announcements and information posted
on our website www.jccsyr.org about
upcoming classes. For more information
and suggestions on classes and content,
Tap is coming back! After taking nearly
two years off because of the pandemic,
instructor Barry Shulman is bringing back
adult Tap Dance classes with some help
from a second instructor, Angela Saturno.
The JCC’s Neulander Family Sports &
Fitness Center will hold weekly adult Tap
Dance classes this fall on Tuesdays and
Wednesdays from 6:30–8
p.m. starting Oct. 5 at the
center on 5655 Thompson
Rd., DeWitt. Shulman will
teach the Advanced Tap
Dance class on Tuesdays and
Saturno will teach Beginner
and Intermediate Tap on
Wednesdays. The classes will
run through Nov. 24.
If you’ve ever wanted to
try tap dancing, now is a great time. The
JCC’s Tap classes are open to anyone age
12 and older. No prior dance experience is
necessary. The cost is $5 per person each
night. Advance registration is not required,
although tappers are asked to arrive early
to sign in. A limited number of tap shoes
are available to borrow at no cost each
night on a first come, first served basis.
Plenty of free parking is available.
The Tap classes are taught “New
York City” style. Students do not need to
commit to every class and can attend as
much as they’d like.
Local attorney and choreographer
Barry Shulman will lead
the Wednesday class. He
has held spring and fall
Tap classes the JCC for
many years. Shulman has
taught principal dancers on
Broadway and with national
tours.
Saturno is a board
certified behavior analyst
and has been teaching dance
for over 20 years.
Tap Dance classes, contact the JCC’s
Free beginners running program starts Oct. 6
The Syracuse Chargers Track Club’s
Everyone Can Run Beginners Running
Program starts on Oct. 6 at the Sam
Pomeranz Jewish Community Center’s
Neulander Family Sports & Fitness Center.
Greg Tuttle of the Syracuse Chargers, a
USA Track & Field-certified coach, will
lead the sessions
which will be held
every week on
Wednesday from
5:30–6:30 p.m.
through Nov. 3.
The free five-week
program will be held
at the Fitness Center’s
indoor track.
Patrick Scott, the JCC’s sports and
fitness director, says this program is for
everyone and that people of all fitness
levels are welcome.
“The Chargers do a great job of
teaching people how to run properly,” he
says. “The strength of your leg muscles,
your bones, your body posture, your gait—
all of these affect your stamina. By the end
of the program, you will be able to run for
30 minutes with relative ease.”
The class will start with walking and
the number of running intervals will
increase every week
on a set schedule.
Each participant
will also be given a
Syracuse Chargers
pedometer and a twoweek
trial pass to the
JCC’s Fitness Center.
Registration forms
are available at the JCC reception desk,
on the Syracuse Chargers website www.
