1.1 Why <strong>Launch</strong>!?<br />

LEARNING OBJECTIVE<br />

After study<strong>in</strong>g this section, students should be able to do the follow<strong>in</strong>g:<br />

1. Recognize the bold new approach for deliver<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>formation to today’s college students (aka digital<br />

natives).<br />

Knowledge Is a Flat World<br />

The textbook publish<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dustry is undergo<strong>in</strong>g stagger<strong>in</strong>g change as many traditional bus<strong>in</strong>ess models<br />

<strong>and</strong> practices quickly lose relevance. Peer-to-peer textbook trad<strong>in</strong>g networks, onl<strong>in</strong>e used-book sellers,<br />

<strong>and</strong> a gray market that allows low-priced <strong>in</strong>ternational editions to displace expensive U.S. texts push<br />

publishers to reconsider outmoded ways of deliver<strong>in</strong>g content. Likewise, the digital natives who make up<br />

our university student bodies (that’s you!) <strong>in</strong>spire educators to th<strong>in</strong>k about the transfer of knowledge <strong>in</strong><br />

excit<strong>in</strong>g new ways.<br />

How do we best communicate the most current th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> our discipl<strong>in</strong>es to students who expect up-tothe-m<strong>in</strong>ute<br />

<strong>in</strong>formation at a keystroke <strong>and</strong> who view educational materials as community—<strong>in</strong>deed,<br />

world—resources that can <strong>and</strong> should be freely shared <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>teractively constructed?<br />

We’ve created a new k<strong>in</strong>d of text—one premised on the idea that college course material can wield wider<br />

<strong>in</strong>fluence <strong>and</strong> be of greatest public benefit as it becomes easily <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>expensively available to anyone with<br />

a desire to learn.<br />
