Ashville Holdings is rooted in construction and our history has morphed
from boots on the ground company found itself to with in-house very few basements to development and government
dig. So, Louisy went looking for work elsewhere.
infrastructure projects. I used to drive
“I knew Ashville who my building competitors Holdings were, as I encompasses every element in
would see their names on tenders,” he says. “So I the lorry, and
construction and went to them is all a and fundamental said ‘I can’t beat the others on part of all supply pump too.” chains.
price, but I’ll be there when I say I’ll be there’.” This
approach worked, and one tipper-grab very soon
became three tipper-grabs and a tipper.
“Then Wandsworth banned grabs from taking
out of skips, and I began to lose work,” remembers
Louisy. “So we started buying skip lorries too.”
This was quickly followed by another change
in direction. “We would arrive at a job only to be
told we couldn’t load as a concrete lorry was there,
and that the concrete lorry was more important.
So we bought a volumetric concrete lorry! So then
we had a concrete lorry, grabs, tippers and skips,”
says Louisy. “But then when we turned up with the
concrete lorry, people were telling us that the pump
wasn’t there, so we’d have to wait. So we bought a
A pair of 4x2 grabs were soon added to the
fast-expanding and increasingly varied fleet,
allowing Ashville to operate in some of the mews
and narrow streets of Chelsea. And more recently
the company made the move into artic tippers,
with the purchase of a pair of Scania XT R500 6x2
tractors with Kelberg tipping trailers.
WALKING THE LINE
But there was still one serious hurdle to overcome,
as Louisy explains: “If we priced a job, and two
HOOPS
The Gaffer
FIRSTLY, MAY I EXTEND A WARM WELCOME TO RAFA
BENITEZ, HIS STAFF, PLAYERS AND ALL ASSOCIATED
WITH EVERTON FOOTBALL CLUB.
’ve had the pleasure of
I meeting and speaking with
Rafa on several occasions
and it’s always good to listen to and
learn from his vast experience and
achievements in the game. He’s
overseen an excellent start to the
new season, and there’s no doubt
that we face a high-quality
opponent this evening. We’re
looking forward to what we hope
will be a good encounter and to
sharing a post-game drink with Rafa
and his staff.
In addition, I have two very close
friends attending the game tonight
who I’d like to make mention of.
David Weir worked closely with me
throughout my time at Brentford,
Glasgow Rangers and Nottingham
Forest and, of course, he had a
magnificent playing career that
included more than a decade
with tonight’s opponents. Frank
McParland was my previous director
of football, working with David and
I over five/six years and he gave
outstanding support, utilising his
extensive game knowledge and
experience. It’s a pleasure to finally
welcome them both to a game at our
stadium and I hope they enjoy the
hospitality but not the result!
Saturday’s defeat to Bristol City
was a bitter pill to swallow. To
create that number of excellent
goalscoring opportunities and yet
come away empty-handed, was
hugely frustrating. However, we must
recognise a couple of key aspects.
Teams aren’t going to play ‘our’
game; they’re going to set up to find
a way to win the fixture. On Saturday,
City saw the counter-attack as their
best opportunity, and we failed to
completely nullify the impact of that
game plan. Two goals in the 45th and
95th minutes cost us three valuable
points and we must strive to keep
improving both defensively and
offensively.
HOOPS
I wanted to be very careful on the
message given to the players at the end
of the game. We were excellent for long
periods, as we had been throughout the
second half at AFC Bournemouth, but
it’s the fine margins that can be so costly
and the last two games have seen those
margins work against us. The players
deserve so much credit for their positive
play at the start of this campaign, but
they’ll be the first to say that we must
keep working hard to improve, to push
forward and to give ourselves the best
chance of achieving our goals this
season.
This week sees this evening’s game
swiftly followed by a Friday night fixture
against West Bromwich Albion. Such
fixture congestion presents a number of
challenges to a smaller squad, but I have
no doubt that the players are more than
ready, both individually and collectively,
to enjoy two such demanding matches.
This is where we must use the squad
and ensure that we rotate players where
needed, but also give ourselves the best
opportunity to secure the sought-after
victories. With the schedule making such
demands on the players, the key aspect
becomes rest and recovery, which
severely limits the amount of actual
work you can do with the players on the
training pitch.
The successful teams are often those
that can best utilise the limited time
available. Much of our preparatory
work focuses on seeking to get the
best balance, whilst ensuring we can
react swiftly to individual needs and
requirements. This week will certainly be
an indicator as to whether we’ve used
the time wisely.
Finally, as always, thank you for the
continued outstanding support. Always
appreciated, never taken for granted!
Enjoy the game!
FIELD BOOST
MARK WARBURTON says QPR midfielder Sam Field
is making excellent progress in his comeback from a
knee injury.
Field joined the R’s permanently in the summer
following a loan stint from West Bromwich Albion
last term, only to sustain the knee problem during
pre-season training.
The 23-year-old was ruled out for between three
and four months but is now on the road to recovery.
“The brace is off,” Warburton said. “Sam saw
the surgeon last week who was really delighted with
the progress.
“Sam is working away every day and when he
returns along with Lee Wallace it will be like having
a new signing.”
FRANKO’S BACK
QPR fan Franko Fraize is back with a new single -
‘How Can I Go Wrong’.
Franko makes the ordinary feel very special. That’s
the charm and magic about what he does. ‘How Can
I Go Wrong’ celebrates what it means to have solid
foundations and to hold them in high regard.
The 4x4 bass drum gets your foot tapping and
the guitar riff rings out reminiscent of an old indie
anthem you’re sure you’ve heard somewhere before.
Franko’s rap places this track somewhere between
The Libertines, Jamie T and Loyle Carner. Long-time
collaborator Tone soulfully sings a catchy hook to
put the icing on the cake.
Previous accolades for Franko include airplay from BBC
Radio 1 and 1Xtra, performances at Reading and Leeds
and supporting Rudimental on tour.
HOOPS
Dom - let’s talk about the
Bournemouth game to start with.
We were unlucky not to come away with
a point in the end, weren’t we?
Definitely. Having gone 2-0 down again,
like we have quite a few times this
season, there was still that confidence in
the dressing room at half-time that we
could get a result. Looking back on the
second half, with the number of chances
we had, we were gutted we didn’t come
away with a point.
As you said, we’ve had to fight back
from being behind on a number of
occasions this season. Whilst that
shows a great mentality and spirit in the
squad, I’m sure that’s not something
you want to be doing on a regular basis?
Even in the first 10 minutes of the
Bournemouth game, while we didn’t create
any clear-cut chances, we were on top.
However, we need to be in a position where
we’re creating opportunities early on and
taking them. Then we’ll be able to play our
football and show our style for the rest of
the game. We had that against Hull with
what was probably our most convincing
result. We’d certainly prefer a lot more
games like that. The comebacks show we
have great character, but you can’t recover
from 2-0 down in every single game. That’s
something we need to work on.
You must be pleased with how the
season’s going overall, though?
We’re setting ourselves internal goals
and we’ve reached them so far. We’re
working in blocks of games. We want to
be up there this season and we need
to be getting results from games like
Bournemouth. There’s a lot to do but
there’s a lot to be proud of so far.
Have you been pleased with
your own displays?
I’m always pushing for more but I’m
in a good place at the moment. I love
14 WWW.QPR.CO.UK // @QPR // @OFFICIALQPR // OFFICIALQPRFC

HOOPS
The comebacks show
we have great character,
but you can’t recover
from 2-0 down in every
single game
playing in front of the fans, that’s made a
massive difference to me this season. I
found it difficult last term. I’m not saying
I wasn’t motivated, but the fans just
make it extra special. This season our
supporters, home and away, have been
unbelievable. It’s definitely something
I’ve missed. When they’re there I enjoy it
so much more. My performances have
been better this term but there’s still
plenty of room for improvement. I can
add more goals and assists, even though
that’s not my primary job. Winning
tackles and setting up attacks is where I
get the most joy from.
You’ve been involved in a lot of
community programmes during your
time at the club, including volunteering
at local food banks in lockdown. What
makes you want to help out?
I might not be a west London boy but I’m
in Abbots Langley so I’m not far away. We
have a fair amount of spare time, so I love
to help out and give back to people in the
community. We’re in a privileged position
and it’s the least I can do.
You also graduated this year with a
degree in business studies. What do you
plan to do with that and when did you
find the time to study?
It’s been over a six-year period. Initially it
wasn’t too hard but as it went on, I had to
put in a couple of hours a day of revision.
I just thought I’d put my spare time to
use. Sometimes I’d revise in the hotel the
night before an away game. I even tried
I’m not saying I wasn’t
having fans at games makes
it extra special
to do it on the coach to away matches,
but I found it difficult when there was an
option to play cards instead! Business is
always something I’ve been interested in,
and I might look to go into it after or even
during my football career. I’m hoping the
degree gives me that base to do so.
The gaffer Mark Warburton is someone
you know well having played under him
three times now. Talk to us about his
style of management. Players often
highlight his attention to detail…
We’ve finished 13th, then ninth, so to
keep improving we need to be better in
every single thing we do, whether that’s
sleeping, eating, or the detail of training.
All those little things have to be better
and that comes from the manager and his
staff. The players have bought into that,
and the club is a great place to be right
now. Everyone is willing to work hard.
HOOPS
We need to be better
in every single thing
we do, whether that’s
sleeping, eating, or the
detail of training
The Bournemouth defeat was our first
loss of the season. If we want to be
contenders for promotion, it’s now time
to go on another unbeaten run, isn’t it?
It was the first time we’d lost in nearly
three months, so it did feel strange.
We don’t want to make a habit of losing
games, but we were competitive in that
match right until the end and that’s how
we have to be all season.
How much are you looking forward
to going up against Premier League
opposition in Everton tonight, if
selected?
I can’t wait! We played Manchester
United and Leicester in pre-season
and it was great to test yourself against
midfielders that have played in Europe
and for their country. There’s no tougher
examination than a team like Everton in
the cup and we’ll be doing all we can to
get through to the next round. A little
cup run for QPR would be nice. We’ve got
a squad of players where everyone can
play their part.
W
elcome back to the Kiyan
Prince Foundation Stadium for
tonight’s Carabao Cup
third-round tie against Everton.
Everton are a huge club with a
great history. They’ve made a good start
to the Premier League season under
Rafa Benitez.
They’re a team that holds fond
memories for me personally in that I
scored my one and only hat-trick against
them in a Premier League match for QPR
in December 1992. They were a team
QPR enjoyed good success against.
Tonight’s cup game gives us an
opportunity to pit our wits against
Premier League opposition and
international quality players. And it
also gives us the opportunity to
progress in a competition which holds
special memories for me given I won it
with Tottenham when we beat Leicester
in 1999.
Saturday’s result against Bristol City was
disappointing, made even more so by
the nature of the game when I felt we
were totally dominant for large parts.
We created many, many chances but
came up against an inspired goalkeeping
performance and unfortunately got hit
with two sucker punches at critical points
in the fixture, one in stoppage time at
the end of the first half and then the
winner in stoppage time at the end of the
second half.
Therein lie the fine lines between winning
and losing. There were many positives to
take as large parts of our play were really
good, but Mark and the players will know
we have to defend certain situations
better and we have to be more ruthless
in taking our chances.
It was great to see QPR legend Phil
Parkes back at the club last weekend.
The reception he got from the fans at
half-time when he came on to the pitch
was wonderful. I know from speaking
to Phil afterwards how much he and all
former players who come back to QPR
appreciate what the club is doing for
them. Thank you so much for that.
Back to tonight, I’m really looking
forward to this game under the lights.
It should be a good atmosphere with a
big crowd. Let’s get behind Mark and the
team. Hopefully we can put on a good
performance, get the result we want and
book our place in the next round.
Thank you as always for your wonderful
EVERTON
OPPOSITION
OVERVIEW
O P P O S I T I O N O V E R V I E W
It’s a grand old team to play for… Everton are one of the most
historic sides in English football.
A long list of honours includes nine league titles, five FA Cups
and a European Cup Winners’ Cup. However, the Toffees have
failed to clinch silverware since 1995 and have rarely threatened to
challenge for a return to the top of the tree since their glory days
under Howard Kendall in the 1980s.
It was hoped the arrival of Carlo Ancelotti in December 2019
would herald a change in fortunes, but the Italian opted to head
back to former employers Real Madrid in June.
That saw former Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez handed the
management reins at Goodison Park and, while his appointment
wasn’t universally popular on the blue side of Merseyside, the
Toffees have made an impressive start to the new campaign.
With a squad filled with talent, the Carabao Cup will be a
competition that Everton will be eyeing as a chance to end their
trophy hunt.
[ THE GAFFER ]
M
RAFAEL BENITEZ
Age: 61
Nationality: Spanish
Year Appointed: 2021
Succeeded: Carlo Ancelotti
FOLLOWING the departure of Carlo
Ancelotti in June, an extensive
recruitment process eventually decided
ex-Liverpool gaffer Rafael Benitez was
the man to take Everton forward.
While the decision wasn’t particularly
well received amongst the Goodison
Park faithful, the 61-year-old appears
to have won over any sceptics after a
bright start to the new season.
Benitez spent a largely unremarkable
playing career as a midfielder with
Castilla, Parla and Linares before
retiring due to injury at the age of 26
and joining Real Madrid’s coaching staff.
He first senior role as a boss came with
Real Valladolid in 1995 but lasted less
than a season and, after unsuccessful
stints at Osasuna and Extremadura,
Benitez took a year out before
returning to management in 2000 with
Tenerife and immediately winning
promotion.
Benitez then joined Valencia and guided
them to the La Liga title in his first
season, also winning the UEFA Cup in
2003/04 before leaving for Liverpool.
The Spaniard’s greatest triumph at
Anfield came at the end of his first
season, when the Reds recovered from
3-0 down to beat AC Milan in the
Champions League final but, despite an
FA Cup win the following year, domestic
success proved otherwise elusive.
Following his departure from Liverpool
in 2010, Benitez had brief spells at Inter
Milan and Chelsea - where he won the
Europa League - prior to two seasons
at Napoli. He moved to Newcastle
United shortly after an unsuccessful
six-month period back at Madrid in the
2015/16 season.
China’s Dalian Professional was his next
port of call from 2019 until his return to
the English game with the Toffees.
Pickford, who headed
Pickford kept 10 clean
HOOPS
GARY, you were a prolific striker
who scored 72 goals for QPR in a
four-year spell between 1984 and
1988. Reflecting on our 1986 Milk
Cup run, we became serious
contenders to win the competition
when we triumphed 2-0 at Chelsea in
the quarter-final replay, didn’t we?
It was a magnificent result for us. We
were 1-0 up going into the last few
seconds and I can remember
challenging their keeper Eddie
Niedzwiecki who’d started dribbling
outside his box. The ball ran loose to
my teammate Mick Robinson on the
halfway line, and he just lashed home a
first-time shot to seal the victory.
Then it was Liverpool in the
semi-finals. They were the best team
in Europe back then and would go on
to be top-flight champions that
season. We won the first leg 1-0 at
Loftus Road and then drew 2-2 at
Anfield with two crazy own goals. It
was great to go through to the final
on aggregate, wasn’t it?
That’s right because no one fancied us
to get a result in the away leg. I still
watch the videos of that incredible
night. I still see them on YouTube
where we were all celebrating after the
game at Anfield and the champagne
corks were popping. As for the match
itself, my knee was giving me a lot of
trouble, but I managed to stay on for
three quarters of the game before I
was eventually substituted. Then the
lads went on to clinch a great 2-2 draw.
Gary Gillespie scored one of the own
goals. I’d previously played alongside
Gary at Coventry when I was first
starting out, so I felt sorry for him.
Although I wasn’t too sorry as it was a
fantastic result for QPR! Looking back,
that was more of a final for us than the
final itself where we were well beaten.
HOOPS
A few weeks after the match at
Anfield, we played Chelsea in the
league at Loftus Road and
hammered them 6-0. You scored a
hat-trick in a resounding
performance by our lads…
A fabulous day for QPR. Again, I still
watch those goals online. And I still
look back on our 3-1 victory over
Chelsea the following year where I
grabbed another hat-trick. YouTube is
great because it means that my kids
will be able to see those games when
I’m long gone. I had two very
memorable west London derbies and
I’m always reminded of them whenever
QPR have faced Chelsea since.
On to the 1986 final against Oxford
then. We were firm favourites to lift
the Milk Cup, weren’t we?
We were definitely. Having knocked out
Chelsea and Liverpool on the road to
Having knocked out Chelsea
and Liverpool on the road to
Wembley, we were the favourites
in the final
Wembley, we were absolutely the
favourites in the final. But I remember
Trevor Hebberd, Ray Houghton and
John Aldridge giving absolutely
storming performances through the
middle for Oxford that day. They just ran
the show. They bossed our whole team.
They dominated us. They bullied us out
of the game. Fair play to them. You have
to hold your hands up. It was a bad day
for us. I hardly had a kick myself. I’d
previously played many games against
those Oxford centre-halves. They were
big lads, but we always got to grips with
them by playing the ball around.
However, at Wembley on the day, we
just didn’t get going at all. We were all
demoralised and it was a shock to the
system. When we had to walk
around the pitch at the end of the game
to clap the supporters, it was the worst
feeling in the world. It was one of the
most disappointing moments of my
football career.
There’s been an online rumour in
recent years that the QPR players
were so nervous that you were all
given strong sleeping tablets in the
team hotel the night before the final.
Is that true?
Rubbish! I’ve not heard that one
before. How could we be nervous
when we’d just knocked Liverpool out
over two legs? If anything, we were too
cocky when we faced Oxford.
Definitely not nervous. We were
probably over-confident and thought
we were going to walk that game. To
be fair to Oxford, they played really,
really well and stuffed us basically.
WWW.QPR.CO.UK // @QPR // @OFFICIALQPR // OFFICIALQPRFC 39

HOOPS
We were probably overconfident
and thought we were
going to walk the game
QPR had a very competitive team
back in the 1980s, didn’t we?
We did pretty well for a side that
people would say was only good when
playing on our plastic pitch. But we
dished up decent football home and
away. I can remember some great
away performances like a game at
Watford where we won 3-0 and I
scored a hat-trick when they were
riding high in the league. We were an
attacking team but - in saying that -
we could come unstuck sometimes
like we did in the Milk Cup final. We had
some excellent footballers in our side.
Terry Fenwick played for England, Alan
McDonald was a dominant defender
and Wayne Fereday made loads of
goals on the wing. I played up front
with John Byrne and he was an
outstanding player. We could give all
the top teams in the country a really
good game and we were a very
attractive side to watch.
What was it like playing on the
plastic pitch?
Over a period of time we got really
good on it. We were almost
unbeatable. There weren’t many
teams that could challenge us on it
although those who had skilful
players could do well. The best game
there was that famous 5-5 draw
against Newcastle when they had
star men like Chris Waddle and Peter
Beardsley. It really was a pulsating
match. We were 4-0 down at
half-time and it ended up 5-5!
Waddle hit a first half hat-trick for
them, but Gary Micklewhite scored
our equaliser in the last few seconds - it
was incredible! Luton also did well on
the Omniturf and I can remember them
getting a couple of draws against us.
They had the same type of pitch at their
own Kenilworth Road ground.
Obviously, no heavy tackles were
coming in on us strikers when we played
on the plastic because if you went down
on the ground, you’d rip half the skin off
your leg. Gavin Maguire did manage to
get his tackles in for us at Rangers but
I’m not really sure how he did!
You could score goals with your head
and your feet. You were an all-round
centre forward, weren’t you?
I used to spend hours and hours in
training working on my touch. I like to
think I was a skilful player. I tried to
make the right runs and time them to
stay onside. Funnily enough, I enjoyed
the aerial challenges with the big
defenders, too, because I was pretty
good in the air.
You enjoyed a very nice relationship
here with the Rangers fans, didn’t you?
The supporters were always really
good to me. I had an amazing time
with the R’s. I loved the club from start
to finish. When QPR wanted to sign me
from Sheffield Wednesday in 1984, I
knew they were a footballing side and
that appealed to me. I think what
helped me a lot was that my
roommate on away trips was Terry
Fenwick. Just after I signed, he
introduced me to the lads and looked
after me. In my first year in 1984/85, I
scored 28 goals for Rangers in a
season when we played in the UEFA
Cup as well. In fact, I was very sad when
I eventually had to leave QPR towards
the end of my fourth season at Loftus
Road. My leg, my knee and my back
were giving me a lot of problems. I had
a word with the R’s boss Jim Smith,
and we decided I should move on. I
returned to sign for Coventry where I’d
started my career.
What are you up to nowadays?
I’m 61 and I’m still working down in
Cornwall, which is a beautiful county. I
drive a van doing maintenance and
deliveries. Don’t forget that I played
through the 1980s when footballers’
wages weren’t that high otherwise I’d
be retired from work by now! But I’m
enjoying life. I continue to keep an eye
on all the teams I used to play for but
definitely QPR. It’s nice to see Rangers
turn the tables now as they start to do
well again. It would be great for
everyone at QPR to get back up there
to the Premier League.
QUEENS PARK RANGERS 1
EVERTON 2
THE DETAILS HAVE ALMOST
BEEN LOST IN THE SANDS
OF TIME, BUT QPR ONCE
PLAYED A HOME CUP
TIE VERSUS EVERTON AT
STAMFORD BRIDGE - THE
VENUE OF OUR ARCH
RIVALS CHELSEA...
Saturday 20th February 1915
FA Cup third round
Played at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea
Attendance: 33,000
BACKGROUND
It was an epic FA Cup third-round tie
back in 1915. Southern League
members QPR were drawn against
giants Everton, who were fourth in the
Football League Division One.
Rangers had been forced to leave their
spacious home ground at Park Royal
Stadium when it was requisitioned by
the military for training purposes
during World War One. So, our matches
were being held at Harvist Road in
Kilburn and the National Athletic
Grounds in Kensal Rise.
However, these venues were
considered too small to stage the
attractive Everton fixture and therefore
it was switched to Stamford Bridge.
PROGRAMME
The matchday programme for this
Everton game was issued by the host
club. Entitled ‘The Chelsea FC
Chronicle’, it sold at one penny. It is a
delightful football timepiece from a
bygone era.
The cover headline declared: “Two
Minds With But A Single Thought.” A
striking cartoon underneath referred to
“NEUTRAL TERRITORY” as a QPR
supporter and an Everton fan met on
the roadside. This carried the jovial
caption:
“THE TOFFEE MAN: ’Scuse me, Sir, I’m
trying to find my way to the Fourth
Round, can you assist me?
THE RANGER: That’s strange, you’ve
taken those very words out of my
mouth; I want to get there also.”
Our rotund R’s supporter is depicted
with a medal on his chest declaring
“LEEDS CITY” - the team QPR had
beaten 1-0 in the second round of the
cup that season.
HOOPS
ACTION
The bumper crowd of 33,000 at
Stamford Bridge witnessed an
exciting game which Everton edged
2-1 despite a late surge by Rangers.
A quaintly written match report in
Sports Argus newspaper later that day
read: “Queen’s Park Rangers had
beaten both Glossop and Leeds City,
and were not perturbed in having to
tackle a First Division side. The game
was played under perfect conditions.
“Everton showed superior form in attack,
and with Millington handling Parker
missed a penalty kick in six minutes.
“Ten minutes later Millington blundered
over to give away a corner, and Galt
headed a goal for Everton, the ball
glancing into the net off Millington.
Subsequently the Rangers pressed,
but were unlucky.
“Ten minutes from the change of ends,
Chedgzoy made an opening for
Clennell to score a great goal for
Everton, and for some time
subsequently the visitors played easily,
content with a two-love lead.
“Ultimately Birch scored for the
Rangers from Donald’s centre, and
then the Southerners pressed
vigorously. Parker and Kirsopp missed
open goals for Everton, but the visitors
mostly defended during the closing
stages. Galt was ordered off.”
this game against the highly fancied topflight
side West Bromwich Albion. But the
fans to take climate action. With approximately
3.5b football fans, CUP26 harnesses the global
Planet Super League trophy will be awarded to the
tournament winner in the first week of CUP26.
CUP26 is supported by the UK Government’s
campaign Together For Our Planet as well as
media partner Sky. At a critical time for the planet,
it shows that everyday fans, families, and the
wider public care about climate change and are
willing to do their bit. But they want their leaders
to do more, too, and deliver solutions at CUP26
that will prevent further climate change.
Tom Gribbin, CEO of Planet Super League, said:
“CUP26 is our largest tournament, with more
than half the professional football clubs in the UK
taking part. Fans of all ages can represent their
club, do their bit for the planet, and help compete
for the trophy.
“We’re delighted to be working alongside Count
Us In and we look forward to sharing exciting
moments and surprises as the season unfolds.”
The tournament began on Monday 13th
the final before succumbing
to the manager’s former club,
Oxford United.
Yet, surely, the bigger boost
would be provided
by imagining the exploits of
Alec Stock’s legendary R’s
team of 1967 when the outfit
skippered by Mike Keen went
one better than the side
captained by Fenwick.
Like Everton tonight, Rangers
were up against top-flight
opposition in West Brom. More
significantly, they were in the
third tier. They even went in
2-0 down at half-time in front
of 98,000 at Wembley.
But they roared back with
goals from Roger Morgan,
Rodney Marsh and Mark
Lazarus to enable Keen to
become the first captain
since England’s Bobby Moore
the previous year to lift a
trophy at the national stadium.
It might not have been the
The fable goes that Jesus
raised Lazarus from the dead.
Well, in pure football terms, it
seems the right winger who
shared the name of the biblical
figure helped to do just that.
Lazarus, also the lead
vocalist on the single ‘QPR
- The Greatest’ recorded to
celebrate the achievement,
recalled to me how the R’s had
plenty to sing about.
The former flanker said: “We
had a wonderful build-up.
Stayed in a lovely hotel in
London. Fats Domino, the
singer was staying there. He
was over from America to do
a concert. I liked Fats a lot and
we met him, although I didn’t
get the opportunity to sing his
big hit Blueberry Hill with him.
“We got up on the Saturday
morning and mingled around
waiting for the coach to take
us to Wembley. There were
crowds of people lining the
street. It all added to the
excitement.
“You never had to calm anyone
down. There were a few young
players in there, but I was 27.
Been around a bit. You also
had Les Allen, Mike Keen, Jim
Langley and Rodney Marsh.
“We were all pleased to just
be in the final. There was no
pressure on us. We knew we
had a chance and were a good
Third Division side, but we
were still a Third Division side.
West Brom were a very good
First Division side who had
Giving Football Back to
Small Business
At eBay, we know small business and
football clubs used to be like chips and
gravy, two peas in a pod – a match
made in community heaven.
Ironmongers, ship workers, spring
makers and cobblers, all formed clubs
which decades later are still prospering.
But nowadays, you’d think it was all
eyewatering transfers, Super Leagues
and mega sponsors, detached from the
humble origins of our historic clubs.
That’s why eBay are proud to support
300,000 small businesses who help
power EFL clubs nationwide. We’ll be
donating our advertising space to a lot
of these businesses – on match day
hoardings, around grounds and beyond –
throughout the coming season, to ensure
they can continue to thrive in our local
communities. So, join us in giving your
support to Small Business Power, because
today, they need us more than ever.
to win. Their players started
doubting themselves.
“I also think a save Peter
Springett made from Astle [at
0-2] inspired everybody to do
what they did. I was delighted
for everyone.”
Keen, who made the Marsh
goal, remembered the team
he led with great fondness
when I interviewed him for the
Gazette in 1983.
Midfielder Keen, who died
in 2009, said: “I believe a lot
of the humour that these
characters used to create
has gone out of the game. I
remember when Mark Lazarus
split his shorts in one game.
He was just changing them for
a new pair when the ball came
to him. Shortless, he darted
off up the wing. Rodney was a
marvellous individual player.”
Stock, who also guided the R’s
into the top flight and returned
as director and caretaker boss,
told me: “I did my little bit.”
Gordon Macey, the club
historian who passed away
last year and was a great help
with my QPR Greatest Games
book, added: “My dad got me
a rattle. I painted it blue and
white the night before the final
but it hadn’t dried out. People
around me got sprayed with
the wet paint!”
Will all these motivational
stories help the R’s paint W12
blue and white tonight? We
shall see!
HOOPS
Columnist
THE FOUNDING EDITOR OF QPR FANSITE ‘R’ GENERATION
DISCUSSES THE LATEST GOINGS ON IN W12…
E
xciting
times await as we welcome
Premier League Everton to W12 in the
Carabao Cup.
I remember a match against the Toffees back
in 2012. We’d just been promoted, and it was
our first game in the Premier League. For young
Sam, this was his first experience of his beloved
QPR knocking shoulders with the big boys.
Before this fixture, my experience with the
Premier League was similar to that of a small
child looking through a high window. I grew up a
football fanatic but, unfortunately, my fanaticism
was a bit of a solo experience as I supported
a team that wasn’t exactly a hot topic of
conversation amongst my friends at school.
Whilst everyone was talking about Ronaldo,
Gerrard and Van Persie, I was cracking on about
some Hungarian bloke named Akos. Supporting
a side out of the top 20 of English football can
sometimes feel quite isolating these days.
The Premier League is so global, so massive,
so significant, that it often can eradicate the
emotions we feel down in the Championship.
What I mean by this is that I might be on a high
after beating Middlesbrough on a Tuesday night
but then sit down to watch City versus PSG on
the Wednesday evening and think, holy Zamora,
we’re far away from this. That footballing
perspective is quite intense.
That’s why it’s so incredibly impressive and
inspiring when teams from the Championship
go on to do well after achieving promotion to
the big time. Watching Brentford, for example,
in the Premier League almost feels like a sitcom
crossover episode where Peter Griffin takes on
The Simpsons. It seems like a novelty. There
isn’t really that gap between the EFL divisions,
though; the teams promoted from League One
often fit in seamlessly to the Championship
and the relegated Championship sides often
struggle in League One. That’s what makes the
EFL so special; the genuine possibility of quality
being overturned by passion.
But, throughout the season there are a few
occasions where those gaps dissipate. I am,
of course, talking about the cups. The FA Cup
always seems like the big deal, ‘the magic of the
cup’ and whatnot. The Carabao Cup often feels
like the Make A Wish equivalent for lower-league
teams. People slate the cup and say this and
that but, in reality, it’s a tournament and it’s
whatever you make of it.
It’s a fantastic opportunity to test our squad
and resettle that perspective about our place in
English football. It’s also a massive opportunity
for the players to learn from the best and show
themselves off. This is a team with Premier League
aspirations and tonight might prove whether that
can translate into Premier League quality.
Nights like these, special nights like these,
decorate the schedule with lights and cameras
and can really train us up for what could be a
fighting season. I cannot wait to welcome Everton
to W12 and show them what we’re all about.
PENS HIS LATEST COLUMN…
ournemouth may have inflicted upon
us a first defeat of the season, but I
didn’t feel too down leaving the Vitality
Stadium on Tuesday.
We were up against a club who fielded a team
on the night which cost them in excess of £100m.
We were more than competitive and could easily
have forced the draw in the closing minutes. It
wasn’t to be.
Tonight’s opponents Everton were among the
better represented teams in the newsroom
during my time at Sky Sports News. My friends and
former colleagues Steve Baker, Matt Bones and
Nick Grounds will be in attendance this evening.
They’re all stalwarts of the pre-Premier League
era and it’s been great watching the BBC’s
series Fever Pitch, which is charting the embryonic
stages of the competition we know today. Our own
Les Ferdinand is a prominent contributor, evoking
memories of how QPR were part of those early
days of giant sumo wrestlers, cheerleaders and
pop acts on the pitch for Sky’s first Monday Night
Football in August 1992 when we faced Manchester
City at Maine Road.
A mate of my brother’s recently brought to my
attention that he’s close friends with a QPR player
from that era. You may recognise the guy on the
right as Maurice Doyle, who we signed as a 19-year-
old from Crewe in 1989. He was with QPR for six
years, making six appearances in midfield before
Mick McCarthy took him to Millwall in 1995.
These days Mo is a scaffolder in Ellesmere Port
having drifted into the non-League scene later in
his career. He still plays for Sutton Athletic in the
West Cheshire League with his sons Callum and
Conor - and keeps a keen eye on QPR.
Thanks to his friend Coliano Lindsay, an Everton
fan and native Italian, for providing this update on
