Dear friends,
It’s thrilling, head-spinning, painful, revelatory, emotional and wonderful to be
present at the birth of something new. Designing Women is a world premiere at a
theatre that celebrates bold new plays, which promises to have a long life beyond
our stage—and you’re here for it.
Creating new work is a risk, and risk-taking is one reason why theatre is at its best
in a non-profit setting. It is harder to take risks when the central motive is
generating a profit.
Accessibility, intimacy, education, equity, inclusion, and, frankly, quality are also
core values that are sometimes sacrificed when the focus drifts from mission to
what some call “the bottom line.”
But being “non-profit” doesn’t mean that creating the work is free. Every single
person on stage and behind it takes home a paycheck, and they should. The
materials to build the set, the cost of a plane ticket for the director, the Facebook
ad you might’ve seen to convince you to come, and the ticket stock that’s still in
your pocket all have a real cost. Each empty seat is a lost opportunity to help us
pay to enact these values, just as much as it is a missed chance to transport
someone through art, perspective-taking, and a greater empathy that ideally
bleeds over, collectively, into the everyday actions we take.

Playwright
Linda Bloodworth Thomason, creator of the
landmark comedy series Designing Women
(and the critically acclaimed Evening Shade
and Hearts Afire) is among the most prolific
writers in American television. The multiple
Emmy and Golden Globe nominee has penned
over 315 episodes for the small screen. Her
very first script, for MASH, was nominated
for an Emmy. Her first political film became
the iconic Man From Hope. Her first novel,
Liberating Paris, was a New York Times
Bestseller (with Publishers Weekly naming her
one of the ten most promising new novelists
in America). In 2013, her first feature-length
documentary, Bridegroom, won the Tribeca
Film Festival. Bloodworth Thomason's
numerous honors include: The Lucy Award
from Women In Film, The Eleanor Roosevelt
Freedom of Speech Award and The Silver
Satellite Award (the highest honor bestowed
by American Women in Radio and Television).

SARAH COLONNA (Mary Jo
Shively) makes her TheatreSquared

most recently starred as Angie in
Netflix’s hit show Insatiable, and
recurred as Lori in seasons 9 and
10 of Showtime’s Shameless. She
became well known as a popular
roundtable regular on the hit late
night talk show Chelsea Lately. She
also served as a full-time writer
on Chelsea Lately, as well as a
producer, writer, and star of the
show’s spin-off scripted series After
Lately. She’s been seen in Michael
Rosenbaum’s hilarious comedy
Back in the Day, Diablo Cody’s
Paradise, CBS’ Battle Creek, Killing
Hasselhoff with Ken Jeong, and
more. She holds a B.A. in theatre
from the University of Arkansas.
CARMEN CUSACK (Julia
Sugarbaker) makes her
TheatreSquared debut. She is best
known for her Tony-nominated
and critically acclaimed lead
role in the Steve Martin/Edie
Brickell musical, Bright Star. She
appeared in multiple episodes of
the Facebook series, Sorry For
Your Loss, opposite Janet McTeer
and Elizabeth Olsen, and she was
featured opposite Tom Hanks in
the TriStar film, A Beautiful Day in
the Neighborhood. She next stars
as Clare Boothe Luce in James
Lapine’s new Broadway musical,
Flying Over Sunset. She studied
opera at the University of North
Texas, which gave her its first
honorary baccalaureate degree in

earning her a Daytime Emmy
nomination. Following that, she
starred as the female lead role in
the Fox comedy series LA To Vegas.

Star, upcoming HBOMax series The
Sex Lives of College Girls, and Ryan
Murphy’s FX series American Crime

Farnahan’s Circus. She plays the
piano, takes voice lessons, swims,

Backpack for Africa, Elizabeth
is passionate about helping
marginalized and vulnerable
children around the world. She is
a sixth grader at McNair Middle
School in Fayetteville. She spent her
formative years at The New School.

HARRY THOMASON (Director)
Harry Thomason rose from
coaching high school sports (an
occupation he loved!) in Arkansas
to producing films and television
series in Hollywood. He produced a
variety of shows including his first,
an acclaimed TV movie, A Shining
Season. He also produced the series
The Fall Guy and the award winning
mini-series, The Blue and The
Gray. He directed the movie, The
Last Ride, recently named by USA
Today as one of the 24 best movies
about Country Music. Together
with his wife, Linda Bloodworth
Thomason, they produced the hit
CBS' TV series, Designing Women,
Evening Shade and Hearts A’fire.
He also directed two Presidential
Inaugurations.
AMY HERZBERG (Associate
Director) is associate artistic
director and a co-founder of
TheatreSquared and distinguished
professor of theatre at the
University of Arkansas, where she
heads the M.F.A. acting program.
At T2, she appeared most recently
in My Father’s War. Other acting
and/or directing credits include
La Jolla Playhouse, George Street
Playhouse, Alabama Shakespeare
Festival, Stages Repertory Theater,
San Diego Repertory Theatre
(resident actor for four years),
Valle Christi International Theatre
Festival, English Theatre Berlin, and

KIMBERLY POWERS
(Scenic Designer) returns to
TheatreSquared, where she has
designed Detroit, The Wolves, The
Humans, and Skeleton Crew, and
worked in production on a number
of other projects. Regionally, she
has designed scenery for a number
of companies, including Trike
Theatre, Lyric Theatre of Oklahoma,
Charleston Stage, Stages, Virginia
Rep, Southern Rep, Casa Mañana,
and Northern Stage. She was the
resident set designer for Ocean
State Theatre Company’s inaugural
season and for Ohio Light Opera,
as well as a design assistant at The
Denver Center Theatre Company.
She has also been a freelance
scenic artist since 2000, and has
also worked professionally as a
props master, event designer and
coordinator, graphic designer, and
exhibit designer. She received her
M.F.A. in scenic design from Kent
State University and is a proud
member of United Scenic Artists,
Local 829.
JASON LYNCH (Lighting Designer)
returns to TheatreSquared, where
previous design credits include

The Half-Life of Marie Curie. He is
a Chicago-based lighting designer
for theatre, dance, opera, and other
live performance art. Chicago

HELENE SIEBRITS (Costume
Designer) makes her
TheatreSquared debut. Working
professionally in film, theatre, opera,
and dance, she has designed and
draped costumes for prominent
companies at regional, national
and international stages. Career
highlights include venues at Teatro
Real in Madrid, Sydney Opera,
Festival International d’Art Lyrique
d’Aix en Provence, the Royal
Swedish Opera, the Royal Festival
Hall in London, and the Hong Kong
Cultural Center. Most recently, she
designed Persephone, directed
by Peter Sellars, and conducted
by Esa-Pekka Salonen, for the LA
Philharmonic’s 100th anniversary.
In addition to design, she curates
costume exhibits for national and
international venues. She received
her M.F.A. from UCLA’s School of
Film, Theatre and Television. She
is an associate professor and head
of the costume program at the
University of Arkansas. She is a
member of United Scenic Artists,
Local 829.
CHRIS RENFRO (Sound Designer)
makes their TheatreSquared debut.
They are a Los Angeles-based
sound designer and composer who
previously served as sound & video
supervisor for Kaiser Permanente
Educational Theatre Program — a
company which tours six live shows
simultaneously across Southern
California. They have designed
for the Upright Citizens Brigade
Comedy Theatre, Shakespeare by
the Sea, and for CalRep aboard the
haunted Queen Mary ship in Long
Beach, Calif. In addition to being
a designer, he is also a television
performer whose credits include
Man with a Plan (CBS); Brooklyn
Nine-Nine (NBC); Reno 911! (Quibi);
and a heavily recurring role on an
upcoming yet-to-be-announced
drama streaming on Peacock.
They hold a B.A. in drama from the
University of California, Irvine.
BRODIE JASCH (Properties
Manager) is the resident props
master at TheatreSquared, where
his previous credits include
Shakespeare in Love, The Legend
of Georgia McBride, Every Brilliant
Thing, The Wolves, Miss Bennet:
Christmas at Pemberley, Vietgone,
Peter and the Starcatcher, Around
the World in 80 Days, and more
than 20 other productions. His

EMELY ZEPEDA (Production Stage
Manager) is the resident production
stage manager at TheatreSquared
where she staged managed
American Mariachi. She was the
resident production stage manager
with Brave New World Repertory
Theatre in Brooklyn where she stage
managed Shakespeare on Stratford
in 2021 and 2019, The Hook, A View
from the Bridge, The Plantation,
and Ms. Julie, Asian Equities. Other

ELIZABETH BARNES (Casting) is a
four-time Primetime Emmy nominee
for casting the television shows
GLOW (Netflix), The Comeback
(HBO), Studio 60 (NBC), and United
States of Tara (Showtime). Other
casting projects include Revenge
(ABC), Siren (Freeform), and the
upcoming Ghosts (premiering on
CBS October 7), and College Girls
(on HBOMax this fall). A proud
graduate of the University of
Arkansas theatre department, she
lives in Los Angeles with her family.
SETH CASKEY (Casting) worked
with Elizabeth Barnes on the
Emmy-nominated GLOW (Netflix),
for which they also received 2019 &
2020 Casting Society Artios award
nominations. Other projects include
What/If (Netflix), Siren (Freeform),
Blood & Treasure (CBS), American
Princess (Lifetime), Don't Look
Deeper (Quibi), Origin (YouTube
Red), MacGyver (CBS), and Single
Drunk Female (Freeform). He is a
member of the Casting Society of
America.
ROBERT FORD (Artistic Director)
is an award-winning playwright,
novelist & musician who helped
found TheatreSquared in 2005,
where he has co-produced 75 plays
and musicals and facilitated the
development of over 55 new works.
The current season features his play
My Father’s War, which premiered
at T2 in 2008. With Amy Herzberg,
he co-adapted two versions of
A Christmas Carol for T2. T2 has
produced several of his plays,
including Fault, The Spiritualist, The
Fall of the House (also Alabama
Shakespeare Festival—Edgar Award
nominee), Look Away, 'Twas the
Night, and adaptations of Great
Expectations and It's a Wonderful
Life. His critically acclaimed first
novel, The Student Conductor, was
a Barnes & Noble Discover Great
New Writers pick. He holds a M.Mus.
degree from Yale and M.F.A.'s
in acting from Rutgers and in
playwriting & screenwriting from the
University of Texas at Austin.
MARTIN MILLER (Executive
Director/Producer) joined T2 in
2009, and has since produced more
than 100 plays and developmental
works, grown the theatre's annual
budget from $160K to $7MM,
and expanded its audience
twentyfold. He managed the design,
construction and fundraising for T2's
new 50,000-square-foot theatre
center. He established the National
Stages Program, a consortium of
theatres offering reciprocal member
benefits, and has served as a panelist
for the National Endowment for the
Arts and Theatre Communications
Group. As associate producer for
Chicago Shakespeare Theater, he
oversaw many projects including
commissioning the bilingual Romeo
y Juliet from Karen Zacarías, as well
as tours and transfers of works by
the Second City and Q Brothers. He
holds a B.A. from Carleton College
and M.F.A. in Arts Leadership from
The Theatre School, DePaul.
