TALANTA MAGAZINE

In an interview with the iconic fashion designer he

had the following to say about his work and passion

for fashion.

Who and what things are your

inspiration while creating any design?

Inspiration is everywhere, everything

around me can serve as an inspiration.

Even this interview feels like one. Apart

from that, Colours and patterns are my

biggest inspiration. I like to play around

with fabrics with bold colours and

creative patterns. I like to challenge

myself how I can be able to make it

work. My ability to understand colours

and different styles play an important

role in my design.

I am thankful that I have been able to

work with most of the people that I

looked up to including Ally Rehmtullah

and Mustapha Hassanali. Having them

as my mentors is more than a dream to

me.

Why did you choose fashion

designing as a career?

First, It's different and unique. It’s

something that only my creative

mind can match my hard-work. I

wanted to dedicate my energy to

something I love.

I usually like to believe that

fashion chose me. Fashion

designing as a career has

created a space where I can

express my creative abilities

with the rest of the world. This

has broadened the sphere for

my growth both personally and

professionally as a fashion

designer and I believe that with

my creative ability I can make a

difference in the fashion

industry.

What is fashion to you?

Fashion is art. It is more of self expression art

as you are the living and walking piece of

art so it is your job to attract people to

beautiful things, including yourself. I believe

that Fashion can have an individual

meaning for me, you and another person.

The most important thing here is how we

choose to define it. Personally ,Fashion has

always been there for me in so many ways

that most people don’t know of. Fashion for

me is more of a second skin, I feel

comfortable and as a way to express my

creativity.

I enjoy looking good. I don’t

dress up for a person to

compliment me (that too) the

main reason is to feel comfortable

and confident in what I am in.

What do you love about being a fashion

designer?

Simply everything!

I always find the entire process very thrilling.

From sketching , fabric sourcing and the

whole production of the garment. It is

comforting when my clients feel confident

and comfortable while trying out my

garments as I always pay attention to both

their comfort and class. I am always looking

forward to something exciting. Events like

Swahili Fashion week have been the

highlight of my life and it is truly exciting

that I have showcased some of my work on

such an event. I also enjoy Learning new

things because I believe that there is no

designer who knows more or who knows

less than the other. We all learn from each

other through experiences and the

knowledge we all have.

I N T E R V I E W W I T H

B R I G I T H A F A U S T I N

By FOUNDER SPOT MEDIA

Brigitha Faustin is a mother of two , A wife ,

A founder and CEO of OBRI Tanzania – An

agri-food company that works with

smallholder farmers mostly women to

process and supply cooking oil under the

OBRI brand. This brand also partners with

different organizations and companies to

provide training on sustainable agriculture

and also inputs that the farmers need to

grow sunflowers. FounderSpot had a

chance to interview Brigitha Faustin on her

journey and growth as CEO and

entrepreneur and this is what she had to

say .

T A L A N T A M A G A Z I N E

What is your mission?

My goal is to see that each

Tanzanian and African has access

to affordable and healthy cooking

oil and all of our farmers especially

smallholder farmers are fairly paid

and sustain their lives through

agriculture.

How did you get the idea of

starting OBRI?

My journey started way back in

2014/2015 and what I can say is

that I started OBRI because I saw

an opportunity in the edible oil

industry in Tanzania and chose to

grab it. I walked to a supermarket

one day and I was looking for

cooking oil. Most of the time I walk

into a supermarket or kwamangi

shop and buy cooking oil but never

bother to even look at the label to

read where it’s made. But that day

out of curiosity I chose to look at

the label; and most of the products

were imported, made in Kenya,

made in South Africa, made in

Egypt. That didn’t sound right at all

in my head. And that is the day

that I decided I am going to start

an edible oil processing company.

With very small investment from

my family I started OBRI. In a

rented warehouse with few clients

OBRI was operational and that was

in October 2015.

How did COVID 19 affects your business?

The impact of COVID 19 to us has mainly

been on distribution and supply of

sunflower seeds and other inputs to

farmers. We have experienced a shortage

of raw materials because most partners

who were supporting farmers with

inputs had to cut their spending while

others had experienced logistical

challenges as they relied most on

imported inputs. This has affected

farmers' productivity which resulted in

an existing shortage of raw materials. As

a result, we had to cut production of

cooking oil while working on the best

model that will increase local production

of raw materials in a sustainable manner

Have you ever faced any unforgettable

challenges in your business journey? If

yes, what did you learn from these

experiences.

Hahaha there are many! Looking back to

when I started the journey six years ago, I

have encountered lots of challenges. The

most unforgettable ones are the ones

where I missed some great opportunities,

especially on the fundraising side

because I failed to believe in myself and

let the imposter syndrome get over. This

is the challenge to many young

entrepreneurs especially women

entrepreneurs because our culture has

made women not become as aggressive

as men when it comes to grabbing

opportunities outside women-related

spaces/fields..

If you had one piece of advice

for someone, what would it

be?

My advice, especially to young

girls, is never be afraid to take

up spaces. Acknowledge that

you have the power and

ability to do anything. Go

bodily towards the direction

of your dreams, own your

vulnerabilities and excel

beyond the standards existing

in our societies regarding a

girl child.

ROAD

2 GREATNESS

I N T E R V I E W W I T H

G E R S O N M A D I H I

By FOUNDER SPOT MEDIA

Gerson’s journey as an entrepreneur and

businessman began in the year 2015. The

main reason that pushed him into

becoming an entrepreneur was how his

parents were trying their level best to give

him the life that every child dreams of even

in the hardest of days. Gerson states that he

witnessed how his parents worked so hard

to provide necessities for him despite the

retirement phase which they were

experiencing leading to several hardships

at that time. Gerson states that everything

started when a single thought glazed his

mind one day that he should start a

business so as to take some load from his

parents’ hustle so that they could rest and

even enjoy their retirement. His mentality

of being an entrepreneur started with no

background or skills. He states that he

believes that God had set the year 2015 for

him to start building his life changing

business/companies which will bring some

difference to the world.

Which year did you establish these

companies

I am the founder of three companies

which are @desire2rise 2018 (Social

media management agency @,

founderspot 2019 (media company)

and @krunchyproducts 2020 (food

processing company). Desire2Rise

was formerly known as Royaldons; it

was established in 2016. Royaldons

was changed to Desire2Rise in 2018

due to some legal issues.

What is your mission

My mission is to leave a mark on

people's lives through these

companies and other companies

which I will establish, hopefully my

mission will be accomplished.

How did you get the idea or concept for

the business

The idea to start Desire2Rise formerly

known as Royaldons. It was in 2014 when

instagram was growing so fast and many

people were interested in having many

followers on their account. At first I was

providing the service of increasing

followers to people's social media

accounts. I was not satisfied with that

service, so I decided to provide a full social

media management package which it's

mainly focused on increasing brand

awareness, increasing engagement rate in

social media pages, promoting social pages

to reach bigger audiences and so many

other services like providing social media

strategies. Founder Spot was established in

2019. After observing that in Tanzania there

are many Entertainment content based

media and few Business based media. I saw

an opportunity there because many people

like to here new business trends like to

here about successful entrepreneurs how

they started how they manage their

business, so i started a media company

which is based on Business content with

the aim to motivate youth to start

businesses and inspiring them with a vivid

example of entrepreneurs killing it in

entrepreneurship. Krunchy products is a

food processing company co-founded by

me and my amazing Mother. We process

food products; peanut butter and snacks

(crisps) and sell them to retailers. We

provide extraordinary products to society.

An entrepreneur is someone who's creative,

i believe that we might be providing the

same product like others but our products

are different starting from the taste, ways

of processing and the marketplace. I am a

huge fan of Naseeb Abdul "Diamond

Platnumz", Jayz and Sean Combs "PDiddy" .

They both have managements (record

labels) and media companies. So I got the

concept from them too.

How many times did you fail but you

didn't lose hope and still believed in

yourself

Failure is the key to success. If you dare to

fail you dare to succeed..Generally within 5

years of entrepreneurship, i failed many

times i even cannot recall all failures.

Rejection, depression, down feelings are

parts of the journey. I keep learning from

my mistakes and trying to overcome them

as I keep moving forward. You know if

you're goal oriented, you'll work hard and

smart to achieve them because goals drive

you to reach a certain point.

If you had one piece of advice to someone

just starting out what would it be

Entrepreneurship is all about mindset. Ask

yourself if you have the mindset to put

hours and hours into a business and not

earn money for months. Ask yourself are

you willing to work hours and suffer failure

before you succeed. You have to own your

dream. It has to be okay to both have the

dream and to act on its development. To

anyone who reads this if you want to start a

business, start and do it with passion and

you'll succeed.

My Region

By Nicolous Novatus

TALANTA MAGAZINE

Most people see Arusha as nothing more

than Tanzania’s safari capital or a stopover

for hiking at the snow-capped Mt

Kilimanjaro. However, Arusha has more to

offer than that. If you look past the city's

chaotic, dusty façade, you'll discover plenty

of reasons to live here.

I moved to Arusha around November last

year and I was surprised to find that

Arusha has a nice selection of coffee shops

selling a wide range of beverages,

including iced lattes and cappuccinos.

More options that Morogoro for example.

My favorite spots are Africafe and Jambo

Coffee House, I also fancy Café Barrista, The

Raptors and Fifi's. These are must-visit

coffee establishments if you're a coffee

enthusiast like me.

TALANTA MAGAZINE

When I first arrived in Arusha, it felt very

chaotic. I discovered some pleasantly

tranquil locations as I became more

comfortable and dug a little deeper. The

magnificent scenery around the city

moved me greatly. From the stunning

clock tower and the majestic view of Mt.

Meru to the Themi Living Gardens,

where you may enjoy both organic food

and fresh air at Eat Wild, a women's

community project's eco-restaurant.

Photograph by Günther

Vansteelant

I've also learnt that Arusha has a diverse

ethnic population, including wa-Iraqw,

Maasai, Hadzabe, Swahili, and many

other indigenous and ethnic cultures

that I may not be aware of.Locals can be

a little terrifying with their thick chugga

accent, but most would greet you

pleasantly. It may not appear secure at

first appearance, but people here have

lived happily side by side for centuries. I

also enjoy learning about and

participating in cultural tourism

programs such as tours to local

communities to visit indigenous Waarusha

and Maasai tribes, as well as

hiking up hills and Mt. Meru along the

Themi valley.
