A MESSAGE FROM THE
Miss Chinatown Hawai‘i
ORGANIZATION
Welcome to the 44th Annual Miss Chinatown Hawai‘i Scholarship Pageant!
We would like to extend our congratulations to all of our contestants and
thank them for their commitment to this pageant. They have learned about
Chinese culture through cooking, calligraphy, martial arts, public speaking,
interviewing and poise. They all were open to new experiences and we know
they will continue to learn and grow throughout their lives. All of the
young ladies you will meet have spent countless hours preparing for this
night. We hope the journey here has also taught them valuable lessons in
self-confidence, commitment and building friendships.
The Miss Chinatown Hawaii Program would not be possible without the
generous support from our volunteers and sponsors. Throughout the year,
these people and businesses support the many events that our court
participates in, culminating in tonight’s pageant. We are so grateful for their
continued faith in our organization.
A final thank you to the Queens Courtney Choy, Anna Davide, Lauren Teruya and
Jocelyn Louie; First Princess Maka‘ala Perry; and Princesses Ashley Benn, Leeonda
Lee and Tracy Wong. It’s been a long 2 years with many fun memories and some
lost opportunities along the way. You’ve been patient and understanding through
the changes and we have all bloomed through adversity because of Covid-19. We
are so blessed to have you carry on the tradition of culture, service, and leadership
through the Miss Chinatown Hawaii program!
Enjoy the show!

MISS CHINATOWN HAWAI‘I History
The Miss Chinatown Hawaii Scholarship
Pageant provides young Chinese-American
women an opportunity to deepen their
understanding and appreciation of their
Chinese heritage.
Each year, the Miss Chinatown Hawaii
Scholarship Pageant organization seeks
outstanding women of Chinese descent to
represent the community as semi-finalists
in the Miss Chinatown Hawaii Scholarship
Pageant. These semi-finalists receive
training in Chinese history and culture,
Chinese cooking, make-up, beauty and poise,
interviewing, public speaking, self-defense,
and personal development. Through the help
of numerous volunteers and experts in their
fields, contestants are challenged mentally,
physically and spiritually during the months
prior to the pageant. In addition, participants
develop valuable friendships that often last a
lifetime.
Miss Chinatown Hawaii will represent the
Chinese community in the Miss Hawaii pageant
(a preliminary pageant for Miss America). The
Miss America Pageant is the nation’s leading
achievement program and the world’s largest
provider of scholarship assistance for young
women. The Miss Hawaii Chinese will represent
Hawaii in the Miss Chinatown USA Pageant,
held in San Francisco during the Chinese New
Year Festivities. Founded in 1958 by the San
Francisco Chinese Chamber of Commerce, the
Miss Chinatown USA experience includes the
San Francisco Chinatown New Year’s Parade
which is named as one of the top ten parades
in the world by the International Festivals
and Events Association (IFEA).
From 1958 to the late 1970s, the
Chinese Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii
sponsored its 1 st Princess from the Narcissus
Queen Pageant to run as a contestant in the
Miss Chinatown USA pageant. In 1977, the
San Francisco Chinese Chamber of Commerce
invited the Honolulu Chinese Jaycees to
sponsor a contestant to represent Hawaii in
the national pageant. In December 1977, the
Honolulu Chinese Jaycees organized the Miss
Chinatown Hawaii Scholarship Pageant.
In 1990, under the direction of honorary
Mayor of Chinatown Sun Hung Wong, President
of the Chinatown Merchants Association, the
Miss Chinatown Hawaii Scholarship Pageant
was created to administer the scholarship
pageant.
Today, the Miss Chinatown Hawaii
Scholarship Pageant is a nonprofit organization
run solely by volunteers, whose mission is
to perpetuate the Chinese culture in Hawaii
through awareness, developing leadership
skills, public speaking, and participation in
community service. While participants deepen
their understanding and appreciation of their
Chinese heritage, the pageant provides young
women with the opportunity to develop
friendships as they work closely with former
contestants and queens who serve as friends,
role models, and coaches.

2020 MISS CHINESE JAYCEES
Two years ago, I could have never pictured
running in a pageant - much less envision I
could ever be Miss Hawai‘i. As I pass on the
incredible honor and privilege that is being Miss
Chinatown Hawai‘i, there are so many individuals,
organizations, volunteers, and sponsors that made
my two years with this title memorable and above
all, life changing. To everyone involved with the
Miss Chinatown Hawaiʻi Festival, thank you all for
being my reminder of what it means to lead, love,
and grow everyday. Your dedication, time, and love
for this organization is appreciated and valued.
Most importantly, to my parents, Chibi, and Koa -
thank you for your sacrifices, love, and guidance
even on my hardest days. I know that none of this
would be possible without you.
No word count can fully summarize my
journey as Miss Chinatown Hawai‘i. From being
crowned in my second year of law school, to
earning one of the first spots to compete at Miss
Hawai‘i, to an amazing San Francisco trip, coming
home to a pandemic was not what I imagined for
my 24th year – the Year of the Rat. However, I
used these past two years – sometimes full of
disappointment and sadness – to reflect on myself,
what it means to be an Asian American woman, and
finish my law school education. After the initial
Miss Hawai‘i competition was postponed for a
year, the path to competing for Miss Hawai‘i 2021
the day before I was set to graduate law school
was daunting and challenging. There were moments
where I wanted to give up, but this journey made
me stronger, ready, and prepared to be the next
Miss Hawai‘i. Everyday has been a blessing, and
being Miss Chinatown opened the door to a life I
never dreamed possible.
To the next Miss Chinatown Hawai‘i,
remember that this title is more than just a sash
and a crown – it presents an opportunity for you
to grow, learn, and connect with the world around
you. Embrace this journey with all that you have!
With love and aloha,
Courtney Choy, Miss Hawai‘i 2021
Miss Chinatown Hawai‘i 2020
The Miss Chinatown Hawai‘i program has
transformed the trajectory of my life. Until
joining, I was a young woman with enough selfconfidence
but not enough self-esteem. Being
trapped in such a contradiction, almost made me
lose the ability to realize my potential. Although
I never sought out to join the pageant, I stayed
to embrace the new experience and engage with
the women around me.
What came next has been an amazing series
of events. Under the consistent support of
the MCH team, I blossomed. By earning
the title of Miss Chinese Jaycees, I became
of a member of the Honolulu Chinese
Jaycees and joined their board of directors
the following year. I have been able to
represent Hawaii in the novice Speak Up
Competition at the JCI USA Celebration
of the Century. I have made lifelong
connections and received an abundance of
encouragement to chase my dreams. Most
importantly I have found the courage to
lift my voice and serve my community.
My motto is “Be your own myth,”
and the narrative of one’s life is not written
alone. The greatest gift this pageant offers
is mentorship to young women. There is
endless aloha in my heart for those who
run and support this program. They have
cultivated a space for women to embrace
their strength and continue walking
through life with grace. The team that
runs this program allowed me to feel so
safe enough to grow into the woman that
I always hoped to be.
Mahalo to everyone who continue
to make this opportunity happen. Thank
you for Aunty Georgianna for signing me up
then telling me after the fact. For Amos Kotomori
for challenging to acknowledge my beauty. For
Doug and his friends for being so generous. For
Ross who adopted me as family and introduced me
to disco balls. For Stephanie, Renee and Jennifer
for their patience and guidance. To the 2020
Court whose gave time to make the most of this
year. Finally, I also give thanks to my mother for
trusting me to surprise her with all the places I go.

2020 MISS HAWAI‘I CHINESE
This past year was a roller coaster ride
and my year as Miss Hawai‘i Chinese was no
exception. The past year made me cherish my
Miss Chinatown Hawai‘i (MCH) sisters even more
and I’m grateful for the bonds of friendship
that endured throughout the pandemic. I will
always be grateful that I was able to get to
know these incredible women.
It takes a village and I have a long list
of people to thank, but mainly my parents, the
MCH organization, and Amos Kotomori. Their
support and guidance to Miss Chinatown USA
(MCU) was invaluable. I also want to thank
Aunty Sheron for my beautiful collection of
cheongsams. Even though I did not bring home
the crown, it was an honor to represent Hawai‘i
at the MCU pageant. I’m grateful for the time
I spent in San Francisco; immersed in Chinese
culture and history. There’s something truly
magical about being in San Francisco during
Chinese New Year and I loved participating in
the parade with my new MCU sisters. I also
enjoyed being able to visit my name society
and learn more about my grandfather’s village.
I still keep in touch with my MCU sisters and
am proud to call them my friends.
Some of my favorite memories from
2019 and 2020 were helping each other put
our crowns on (Courtney and Anna, I’m
talking to you guys), the Christmas parades,
and celebrating Chinese New Year in San
Francisco and Hawai‘i. When we visited stores
in Chinatown I remember waking up early and
walking the streets in our cheongsams and
heels. We bonded over our sore feet and love
of food. I loved celebrating the lunar new
year with my MCH sisters and will always
cherish the memories.
To the new court and contestants, I
hope you enjoy every moment because it will
go by quickly. Remember to support each other
as you embark on this journey and welcome
to the MCH family! Good luck and have fun!
Maka‘ala Perry
2020 Miss Hawai‘i Chinese First Princess
My time as Miss Hawai‘i Chinese First Princess was
an amazing experience that I’ll never forget. I learned so
much before I had even received my title. From cooking to
self defense, from walking to interviewing, I was able to
learn about my Chinese culture and myself as well. After
receiving my title, I was given many great opportunities to
be a positive influence in the Chinese community here in
Hawai‘i. My favorite part of this journey was our trip to
San Francisco in February of 2020. It was my first time in
the city. We saw so many cool sites, ate the most delicious
food, and met new people. It was also a great way for us
girls to bond and grow closer.
I really enjoyed our time together and wish it
didn’t have to be cut short due to the pandemic. We did,
however, get to hold on to our titles for a bit longer and
persevered through it all. I made lifelong friendships and
am so grateful to have been a part of the Miss Chinatown
Hawai‘i Organization. Thank you for the best year(s)!
Ashley Benn
2020 Miss Hawai‘i Chinese Princess
Running in the 2020 Miss Chinatown Pageant was
the best decision I’ve made during my final year of college.
Although we were not able to fully enjoy our time as court
members due to the pandemic, I’ve gained new friends,
learned more about my Chinese culture, and developed my
speaking skills. The interview portion really encouraged me
to improve my speaking and story-telling skills even after
coronation. Since then, I’ve landed an internship and 2 jobs.
I even got hired for my first full-time job during lockdown.
Without the help of Renee, Jenn, Steph, Lindsey, Jess, and
Ross, I would not have been motivated to work on selfdevelopment.
Thank you to the rest of the Miss Chinatown
Hawai‘i Organization for offering this amazing opportunity
to the young women of our community. I wish the next
court the very best. You will have so much fun and make
tons of memories!!

Leeonda Lee
2020 Miss Hawai‘i Chinese Princess
My beautiful journey throughout Miss Chinatown Hawai‘i has been nothing
short of a life changing experience, filled with everlasting memories. Getting to
dive into my cultural roots has made me exceptionally proud to represent such a
dignified society.
“Nothing in the world is worth having or worth doing unless it means effort,
pain, difficulty…” The reward of becoming a Miss Hawai‘i Chinese Princess was
worth all of the trials and tribulations along the way. Of course it was also filled
with abundant amounts of joys and successes. From inspiring young women, lighting
up childrens’ hearts, helping charities, traveling to San Francisco, being in parades,
attending dinners and functions, taking self defense classes, cooking and calligraphy
classes, to blessing Chinese owned businesses, has all been an unbelievable dream
come true.
Laughs, tears, and makeup were all shared among our sisterhood. The bonds
that we built could never be broken. This pageant has contributed to shaping me into
the benevolent and respected woman I’ve always longed to become. My utmost
gratitude to everyone involved in the Miss Chinatown Organization. I could not have
made it without you. And a deep thank you to my family and friends for their loving
support. Best of luck to the 2022 contestants and I wish them good fortune!

2020 Miss Hawai‘i Chinese Congeniality
Never in my lifetime had I thought that I would participate in a
pageant. Yet I was somehow convinced and went through with it, learning
new things and making new friends along the way! Looking back and
reflecting on everything I have done, it was a great experience I would go
through again. The memories I made with my fellow court members are
priceless to me and were only made possible by this organization.
I’m so grateful for the Miss Chinatown Hawai‘i Organization for
putting this wonderful program together where I was able to learn about
parts of my culture and local communities that I had never experienced
before. This was truly the sisterhood experience I never thought I would
be able to experience. This is only possible due to the volunteers and past
court members who helped each individual girl grow.
A special thank you to my family and friends that have encouraged
me every step of the way with this journey. There were times when it was really
stressful but you guys were with me every step of the way. Without your
love and support, I wouldn’t be who I am today. It’s been an honor and
privilege to represent the Chinese community for these past two years.

2021 MISS CHINESE JAYCEES
I can hear Amos Kotomori’s voice in my head
asking, “So, what are your takeaways?” And I can
confidently say that it’s to expect nothing while
staying open to everything.
When I look back at this year, I’m filled
with gratitude for all the people who offered their
time, challenged my thinking, inspired my passions,
and became life-long mentors and friends.
Renee, I don’t think there’s anyone else on this
planet that could tolerate the amount of time
you spent on the phone with me, drilling different
questions and thinking of funny acronyms to
help my jumbled thoughts make sense. Amos,
every hand-sewn bead, jazz hand adjustment, and
homemade salad couldn’t begin to describe the
amount of love you put into this journey. You bring
me so much joy, and I love that this past year
has brought me closer to you than ever before.
Steph, thank you for always choosing/siding with
my favorite outfits, and making me feel confident
during our photoshoot together. Jen, thank you
for always challenging me while making me feel
comfortable to be myself during mock interviews.
I’ll never forget my first nine!
Memories
I did not expect to come home for spring
break in 2019 and return to campus in May 2021.
But the pocket of time from early pandemic days
is the silver lining that taught me to embrace the
unknown. During that time, I wrote for a newspaper
in Wyoming, competed in my first virtual pageant,
and finished a capstone and thesis for both my
bachelor’s and master’s degrees at USC.
amily, it always takes a tribe: the magic of
grammies’ sewing skills, mamalam’s impeccable
taste in clothes, Kat’s “therapy” calls, Soph’s
vegan dinner dates, Anya’s pageant walk advice,
and of course, the never-failing dad jokes. I love
you all so much.
My heart is so full. Mahalo for an unforgettable
