As her son was being rushed to the hospital, Melinda looked<br />

through his cellphone, trying to piece together what, exactly, had<br />

led to the nightmarish morning.<br />

“There were tons of different groups on various social media<br />

platforms where these kids are offering up drugs,” she said.<br />

“Literally, hundreds of kids every second, saying, ‘Got this,’<br />

‘Looking for this,’ ‘Anyone need this?’ ”<br />

One group chat was filled with photos of guns, marijuana and<br />

messages asking for “blues” and “snow” — opioids and cocaine.<br />

Apps such as Facebook, Snapchat and WhatsApp now act as an<br />

“easy highway” to illegal substances.<br />

McFaul said perhaps the biggest challenge for the task force is lack<br />

of knowledge among parents.<br />

The drug dealer is not sitting down the street from you," DEA<br />

Administrator Anne Milgram said. "It is sitting in your home. It is<br />

sitting on the phone of your child, sitting in their bedroom, sitting<br />

on the couch. Anyone can have access.”<br />

The counterfeit pills are made to look like popular prescription<br />

brands, including painkillers OxyContin, Percocet and Vicodin,<br />

anxiety medication Xanax and attention-deficit drug Adderall.<br />

"Because there is no dosage and quality control, you truly are taking<br />

your life in your hands when you take that one pill. You don’t know<br />

what’s in it," said Matthew O’Brien, the DEA assistant special agent<br />

in charge in North Carolina.<br />
