WELCOME BACK TO THE CITY GROUND FOR TODAY’S MATCH AND 

WELCOME TO NEIL CRITCHLEY AND HIS BLACKPOOL SIDE 

The international break has provided more valuable 

time for me and my staff to get to know the players 

and work on the way we want the team to play. 

For those who have been away playing for their 

countries, it is well earned recognition for their 

personal performances. 

Brennan Johnson has been in the Wales squad 

and has also won the EFL Player of the Month for 

September, which is a well-deserved award. 

Brennan is an exciting young player who you have 

taken to your hearts as another youngster who has 

come through the club’s academy system . 

Like many others, he’s been bright since we arrived 

and, like all our young players, we will manage him 

carefully. There will be times when we need to 

challenge him and, occasionally, we may need to 

pull him out. But he is a talent like the other young 

lads around the first team squad and me and my 

staff look forward to working with them across 

the season. 

Young players was one of the questions I got 

asked at the recent Fans’ Forum. You can read 

about it on the next couple of pages. 

I really enjoyed answering questions from a 

cross-section of fans and it was important to 

me to get to know more about your club from 

your perspective and, hopefully, I was able 

to give a little more insight into how me and 

my staff like to work. 

I also met with some of the club legends 

during the week and, again, that gave 

further understanding of the values of 

Nottingham Forest Football Club. 

I think we all enjoyed our away day at 

Birmingham a fortnight ago. I thought 

we were really good in open play at St Andrews and 

could have scored more than the excellent goals that 

we did score. 

To score three away from home in the Championship 

twice in four days is a great achievement for the 

players – we all know what a tough league it is. 

Lewis has been really good as a senior player since 

we arrived and he scored an excellent goal. It was 

good to see Ryan get on the scoresheet too, to add 

goals to his all round play and, also, Djed getting 

forward to score at an important stage of the match. 

But I can assure you nobody here is getting carried 

away. We still have lots of work to do to pull away 

from the bottom reaches of the league. In the 

Birmingham game, the opposition could have scored 

a couple themselves from set pieces so there has 

been plenty for us to work on ahead of today. 

One of the things I have noticed since I arrived is the 

support, both home and away. The tickets were sold 

out for Birmingham and you again dominated the 

stadium with your support. It is something I discuss 

with the players and makes a real difference – thank 

you. 

I also understand that today will attract the biggest 

crowd of the season. The club has put effort into 

a fan zone and also a Food Bank, which is a really 

important initiative that shows the club recognises 

its’ importance in the community. Please contribute 

if you are able . 

It is a fantastic football club and I am proud to be the 

coach. We will be doing everything we can today to 

get the three points for you .

MATCH REPORT 

FOREST 2 - 1 BLACKPOOL 

Saturday, 16th October 2021 | Kick-off 3pm | The City Ground | Sky Bet Championship 

Attendance: 27,946 including 1,795 Blackpool supporters 

The biggest crowd of the season 

– nearly 28,000 – saw The Reds 

finally record their first home 

win of the season. 

On sunny Trentside afternoon, 

head coach Steve Cooper named 

an unchanged 18 from the 3-0 

victory at Birmingham before the 

international break. 

Brennan Johnson was named 

EFL Young Player of the Month 

for September on the morning of 

the match and he celebrated his 

accolade by rounding off a fine 

team goal midway through the 

first half. 

The Reds held possession for 

nearly a minute, exchanging 26 

passes, with a raking cross field 

pass from Joe Worrall finding 

Max Lowe on the left and his 

inviting low cross was comfortably 

dispatched by the Welshman from 

six yards out. It was Johnson’s first 

goal at The City Ground and his 

third of the season. 

The Reds threatened again shortly 

afterwards. Johnson’s neat flick 

found Lewis Grabban who fed Lowe 

on the left and the full back’s curling 

shot from the edge of the box was 

just over Daniel Grimshaw’s bar in 

the Blackpool goal. 

The Reds were dominant 

throughout the first half, with Djed 

Spence a continual threat down 

the right hand side, but Blackpool 

nearly equalised just before the 

break when Jerry Yates’ header 

from a corner was nearly bundled 

home by Arsenal loanee, Tyreece 

John-Jules. 

The Reds almost doubled their 

lead three minutes into the second 

half when Ryan Yates’s through 

ball released Johnson who cut 

the ball back for Grabban eight 

yards out. The front man seemed 

certain to score until former Reds 

academy graduate Jordan Gabriel 

appeared from nowhere to clear. 

However, Blackpool levelled 

after 53 minutes against the run 

of play. Brice Samba and Spence 

both went for a Josh Bowler 

cross, Gabriel headed Samba’s 

punch goalwards and Jerry Yates 

volleyed home from six yards. 

It was Yates’s third goal of the 

season after his 23 last term. 

But The Seasiders were not level 

for long as, on the hour mark, The 

Reds reclaimed the lead with Lewis 

Grabban’s fifth goal of the season. 

Max Lowe crossed after more 

neat approach play, Joe Worrall’s 

close range shot was well saved by 

Grimshaw but Grabban swept the 

loose ball home. 

Blackpool enjoyed periods of 

possession but it was The Reds 

who looked the more threatening,

Forest claimed their fourth 

consecutive win in dramatic 

fashion with an injury time 

double from substitute Lyle 

Taylor at Ashton Gate. 

Steve Cooper made just one 

change to the 18 against 

Blackpool with James Garner 

replacing Jack Colback on an 

unseasonably warm but extremely 

wet West Country evening. 

Brennan Johnson was a continual 

threat on the right in the first half. 

Early on he was released by Lewis 

Grabban but couldn’t connect 

cleanly with his shot; then he cut 

onto his left foot but Dan Bentley 

made the save; and, after half an 

hour, he dispossessed Nathan Baker, 

again cut in on his left foot, but hit 

the inside of Bentley’s far post. 

Bristol City, who started the match 

above The Reds but with the 

unenviable record of no wins in 16 

at home, also had their moments, 

with Andreas Weimann heading 

straight at Brice Samba and Alex 

Scott screwing his shot wide from 

just six yards. 

Grabban again released 

Johnson in the inside right and he 

rounded Bentley but his shot was 

deflected to Philip Zinckernagel 

who was unable to control with the 

keeper stranded. 

Five minutes before the break, 

The Robins took the lead against 

the run of play. A long kick from 

Bentley was flicked on by ex-Derby 

man Chris Martin, and when Nahki 

Wells’ shot from the edge of the 

box was parried by Samba, the 

18-year old Scott smashed the 

rebound into the empty net for his 

first senior goal. 

Forest dominated the possession 

in the second half, forcing a 

succession of corners and keeping 

Nigel Pearson’s men on the back 

foot, as the rain became torrential 

in the West Country. 

The hosts were still a threat 

coming forward, though, with 

Scott denied a penalty and 

Samba pushing a fierce Wells shot 

onto the post. 

Grabban had a goal disallowed for 

offside and The Reds continued 

to push until, entering injury time, 

a slide rule pass from Ryan Yates 

released Djed Spence who was 

upended by Nathan Baker. 

Substitute Lyle Taylor coolly 

stepped up and sent Dan Bentley 

the wrong way from the spot. 

The centre forward quickly 

retrieved the ball from the net and, 

from the kick off, The Reds were 

on the hunt for the unlikely winner.

beating Barnsley and Birmingham

Speaking to Forest supporters 

ahead of today’s clash against 

Blackpool, Cooper said: “I’ve 

never been so motivated to do 

well. I’ve got a feeling that I 

haven’t had before. 

“The first game at The City Ground 

was special. Mull of Kintyre with 

my Dad inside the stadium and it 

meant a lot. 

“I just want to look forward 

now. Our job is to get ready for 

Blackpool and to get the group of 

players in the right place ready for 

the next match. 

VISION 

“We want to get it right and build 

on the history of the club and on 

the amount of people that come 

and watch every week. We need 

to embrace what this football club 

stands for and thrive on that. 

“There’ll always be an appreciation 

from myself and I always talk 

about the supporters to the players 

because it doesn’t cost anything 

to be humble, and it doesn’t cost 

anything to work hard or to show 

respect. We want to try and build 

an identity and for the team to play 

a certain way. 

“I said to the players after the 

Barnsley game that I’ve managed 

one home and one away game and

DEVELOPMENT OF YOUNG

“I know Gary Brazil through 

previous jobs and Warren Joyce. 

I also know Andy Reid from his 

playing career here and we’ve 

struck up a good relationship. 

“There’s a genuine interest from 

me in youth football. I’ve been to 

watch the teams train because I 

really enjoy it and you can always 

pick up ideas. 

“A lot of good work goes on in 

academies now and it’s something 

I’m genuinely interested in. I park

my car right by the training dome 

at the Academy and there’s no way 

I get in my car without watching 

the kids train! 

“I believe a thriving Championship 

team has young players in it. 

Teams that have done well in the 

Championship and won promotion 

have all had homegrown players 

because they give natural 

enthusiasm. I want homegrown 

young players in the squad.” 

PHILOSOPHY 

“You need everybody bought 

in and there’s got to be a set of 

principles that you stick to that 

you really believe in, whether it’s 

against top of the league or the 

biggest budget. 

We’ve also got to respect 

the opponent. For example, 

Birmingham last week, it would be 

foolish to go into that game and 

not talk about set-pieces. But I still 

want the team to build from the 

back, play forward, be exciting and 

get good numbers up the pitch. 

“It is a set of principles that we will 

work on every day and then you 

tweak things for what’s coming 

next. I believe in going into games 

to win them. I don’t like chopping 

and changing from one game to 

the next because I don’t think you 

build an identity. 

“Wherever we go, we’ll bring our 

game and although we won’t win 

every game, we’re certainly going 

to try to.” 

CULTURE 

“I’m a believer in building selfbelief 

and people feeling good 

about themselves because I think 

that’s how you get the best out 

of people. I’m more interested in 

showing people a bit of love and 

support rather than criticise them. 

“That doesn’t mean you can’t be 

challenging or demanding because 

I think that’s a high performing 

culture. You can challenge 

people and support them at the 

same time. I’m very clear on my 

leadership style and what I think a 

good culture looks like. 

‘It’s about culture and 

togetherness and belonging, 

understanding who you work for 

and what it represents and then 

and ‘go for it’ and commit to that’s 

what we’re going to do. 

“I’ve bought in to what the owner 

Mr Marinakis has said to me, and 

Dane Murphy. I’ve asked them to 

buy into me too and now it’s time 

to go for it.” 

Cooper was speaking in front of a 

cross-section of fans representing 

groups including the Supporters’ 

Club, the Supporters’ Trust, Forza 

Garibaldi and LGBT+ Trickies. The 

forum was part of the club’s new 

programme of fan engagement 

and similar events are being 

planned for the future.

DAVE MARPLES REFLECTS ON THE UNCANNY 

SIMILARITIES WITH THE WEATHER IN MATCHES IN 

BRISTOL SEPARATED BY 32 YEARS 

Biblical and incessant rain in Bristol? Ah, 

that will be another memorable Forest away 

game then. 

For the younger generation amongst you, it 

must be tiresome hearing about the League 

Cup semi-final second leg game at Ashton Gate 

in February 1989. With the score locked at 1-1 

from the first leg, this game has its place firmly 

lodged into the Forest away games hall of 

fame. It isn’t just Garry Parker’s late winner that 

secures its place, it’s that it meant a return to 

Wembley for a final after nine long years away. 

It’s the inflatables in the away end. It’s the rain. 

The never-ending and unremitting rain. It’s all 

of these things. 

But from now on, when discussing an away 

trip to Ashton Gate, it might not be so legally 

binding for those of a certain age to bring up 

the ‘Garry Parker in the rain’ game. A match – 

or at least, a minute – of equally astonishing 

drama occurred on an equally wet evening in 

Bristol on Tuesday. 

As full time loomed, we were consoling 

ourselves with the internal observation 

that we knew the unbeaten run would come 

to an end sometime and that the performance 

wasn’t bad – not bad at all. We hadn’t been 

at our best but we had still fashioned some 

decent chances and looked dangerous when 

breaking forward. Besides, we’d recently 

strolled away with maximum points and stacks 

of goals from Huddersfield, Barnsley and 

Birmingham: to do the same again at Bristol 

seemed, well, a bit greedy. 

Yet in the space of 47 seconds, everything 

changed. After nonchalantly dispatching his 

penalty, Lyle Taylor sprinted to retrieve the 

ball, eager to get the game going again. Such 

a gesture was not just a statement of intent 

but more like a plane flying a banner across

the sky declaring that, like Russell Osman in 

Escape to Victory, we can win this. The smoke 

from the flare lit to mark the equaliser was still 

wafting around just 47 seconds after the ball 

was retrieved from the Bristol goal to when it 

resided there once more. Carnage broke loose 

in the away end. 

When asked after the game whether he could 

quite believe what had happened, Steve 

Cooper casually replied, ‘Yeah.’ Not in an 

arrogant manner but more to articulate that 

given the way the team kept playing, such a 

comeback shouldn’t feel quite as outlandish 

at it may have seemed. Admittedly, nobody 

can realistically claim that they saw that 

dénouement coming. But at the same time, 

it wasn’t wholly unexpected. This game - or 

at least a similar game - has been played out 

before. 

Back in October 2001, Paul Hart was in his third 

month as manager of Forest when we travelled 

to Watford for a midweek away game. Despite 

going one down, we rallied and came away 

with a 2-1 win. Some similarities exist between 

the two games. Watford’s opener, just like 

City’s, came after the goalkeeper parried a first 

attempt but could not keep out the followup. 

From then on, Hart’s young Forest team 

simply kept doing what they were told: keeper 

Darren Ward repeatedly bowled the ball out to 

his full backs who carried it up field and kept 

asking questions of the Watford defence. David 

Johnson and Stern John (see right) hit the 

Forest goals to seal a remarkable turnaround 

against a side looking for a third consecutive 

win. 

Likewise, against Bristol City, Forest just kept 

doing what they had been doing and you could 

almost see the opposition players’ shoulders 

sag as yet another ball was threaded wide for 

a marauding full back to link up with a wide 

forward and pose yet more problems for a 

wilting defence. 

It is a rare occasion that one feels utterly 

immune to the misery of stepping into a third 

consecutive puddle wearing inadequate 

footwear while trundling away into the night 

from an away game in midweek, hundreds of 

miles from Nottingham. Yet Tuesday was one 

such occasion. Like Gene Kelly, we danced and 

serenaded our way back to our cars and buses 

with a wholly new and fanciful story of a trip at 

Ashton Gate on an evening when legends were 

created. From a distance, it might only seem 

like a league win, but it felt like so much more.

SMALES TALK 

REVISITED 

Richard Harrison looks back at former Forest secretary Ken Smales’ thoughts when 

Fulham arrived in December 1974 – mainly concerning the introduction of an ultramodern 

fixture computer at Football League HQ 

Ken Smales’ column did not appear quite 

so regularly in the 1974-75 season, as the 

space was often used for a feature called 

“Talking Points” penned by Commercial 

Manager John Carter. When Fulham came 

to town in early December, though, Carter 

was away caring for his wife after an 

operation and “Platform” duly returned. 

Ken concerned himself with the relatively 

new use of a computer to produce the 

Football League’s fixtures. League Secretary 

Alan Hardaker had recently felt the need to 

explain that “the computer was not human 

and could not think” but merely based the 

fixtures it produced on the data it was given. 

Ken seizes the opportunity to offer “a couple 

of thoughts to feed into it next year!”. 

Specifically, he laments us not having been 

given a home fixture on Boxing Day since 

1971 (a mere three years) and, after we had 

crossed the river to play Notts the previous 

Christmas, he was clearly disappointed at 

the prospect of travelling to Hull instead 

of playing our festive football at The City 

Ground. 

Clubs were given a “fixture questionnaire” 

to fill in and Ken tells of a request we had 

“fed” the computer to give us an away 

fixture on 31st August to avoid a clash 

with the Test Match at Trent Bridge. This 

request was apparently ignored, leaving 

Ken to recall traffic congestion and a lack 

of consideration for those who liked both 

sports. (albeit, this is all rather puzzling as 

records suggest there does not seem to 

have been a Test Match in Nottingham on 

that date!) 

Next, Ken turns his attention to the Football 

Association for only allowing a short gap 

(including Christmas) between the second 

and third rounds of the FA Cup. Noting that 

the postal service is “not dependable at the 

best of times”, he imagines a possible allticket 

home tie against “a big club” and the 

difficulties of “having 50,000 tickets printed 

and sold in such a short space of time with 

no postal applications”. 

He concludes by considering the odds of 

both us and Notts being drawn at home (4 

to 1) and of a Nottingham derby (63 to 1), 

before referring the reader to a separate list 

of the occasions since the war when we both 

played at home on the same day. 

Our games against Fulham that season 

would give Ken plenty more food for 

thought, as we ended up playing The 

Cottagers six times in a little over two 

months, thanks to a marathon four-match FA 

Cup fourth round tie, which the Cottagers 

eventually won en route to the final where 

they lost to West Ham. 

This match in December 1974 finished in 

a 1-1 draw, Neil Martin and Rod Belfitt the 

scorers.

SOUTH AMERICA 60 YEARS – HERE IS PART TWO 

After two resounding victories against the 

Britanicos (13-1) and Rosario (6-0), The Reds 

attracted the joint highest attendance of the tour 

when 10,000 watched the match against Alumni 

on 25th June 1905. 

That was when Senor Langone of Independiente 

found red shirts inspirational and irresistible and it is 

surely possible that the young Juan Peron was there 

too, later to be President of Argentina.

In any event, the Alumni were beaten 6-1. Lessons (2), 

Niblo, Shearman and Timmins scored. There was also 

an own goal. Another 10,000 spectators were present 

for the match on 2nd July 1905 against Liga Argentina, 

a representative side selected from the country’s 

leading clubs. It made no difference as Lessons 

struck another four goals in a 9-1 victory. Niblo (2), 

Henderson, Timmins and Shearman got the others. 

Finally, on 5th July 1905, Forest played an exhibition 

game with all 13 players taking part and, presumably, 

a few locals making up the sides. The ‘A’ team beat 

the ‘B’ team 2-1 but the venue and other details are 

unrecorded. Inside-right Bill Shearman, who had 

top-scored in the First Division season with 13 goals 

from 29 matches, got 13 goals in eight matches 

on tour but the leading scorer was centre-forward 

George Lessons with 17. Both forwards twice hit four 

goals in tour games. 

Tom Clifford, who played six games at right-half, is listed 

as C. Clifford in former secretary Ken Smales’ records, 

which provide no further information about him. 

In fact, he was a 29-year-old former Celtic player 

who had been signed by Forest from Motherwell just 

before the tour began. According to the Nottingham 

Evening Post on Thursday, 3rd August, 1905, Hallam

said the trip had introduced Clifford to his new 

comrades and from what had been seen of him, he 

gave promise of strengthening the half-back line. 

The player had sustained a slight knee injury but 

should have recovered for the start of the season. 

But Clifford never played for Forest again so perhaps 

the injury proved more serious than first thought. 

The forgotten footballer almost became the 

unknown soldier. Royal Scots Fusilier Tom Clifford 

was killed at the Battle of the Somme on 19th 

January, 1917. With no identified grave, he is listed in 

the Memorial to the Missing monument, designed by 

Sir Edward Lutyens, erected in the French village of 

Thiepval (see above). 

Secretary Hallam regarded Argentinian playing 

standards as better than Midland League but 

not quite up to the English Second Division. He 

said, however, that attendances compared well, 

particularly as admission charges were three times 

higher than in England. 

It had been a triumphant tour. Despite leaving at 

home Welsh wizard Arthur Grenville Morris, who 

had been the league season’s second highest scorer 

after Shearman, Forest had scored 57 goals in eight 

matches (excluding the exhibition game) and, without 

iconic defender Frank Forman, conceded just four. 

The Battle of the River Plate was the first naval battle 

of the Second World War and the only episode 

of that conflict to take place in South America. 

Three Royal Navy cruisers engaged their quarry, 

the German battleship Graf Spee, in the estuary 

of the River Plate. The German captain scuttled 

his damaged ship in the port of Montevideo and 

then committed suicide. The film ‘The Battle of 

the River Plate’, made in 1956 and starring John 

Gregson, Anthony Quayle and Peter Finch (as the 

German captain) was a huge box office success 

and was chosen for the 1956 Royal Command Film 

Performance. ‘Rio de la Plata’ and ‘Dolores Song’, by 

composer Brian Easdale, featured in the film. 

Forest’s tour is described as “an unmitigated success” 

by Uruguayan writer Andreas Campomar in a chapter 

headed ‘Battles of the River Plate’ at the beginning of 

his history of Latin American football i‘Golazo! (2014). 

A publisher/writer, Campomar, who has written 

for the Daily Telegraph, the Literary Review, the 

Times Literary Supplement and the Spectator, 

confirms that by the end of the tour: “Such was the 

esteem in which Nottingham Forest were held that 

Independiente copied the club’s red strip.” Equally 

impressed, says Campmar, were the Argentine 

Football Association who sought to make the 

summer tour by British clubs an annual event.

THE KIT MAN 

Forest Review’s own Kit Man, Tom Ignatowicz, goes back 

to the 1950s to look at kits worn by today’s two teams 

VINTAGE KITS 

A large v-neck was a staple design 

of the 1950s and 60s with a simple 

traditional club logo on the left of the 

shirt, often on its’ own white patch. 

Both teams kept to that design here, 

with The Seasiders also wearing black 

socks with orange before changing to 

their familiar white socks in later years. 

Jim Barrett, our former forward, is seen 

here in our 2-1 loss at The City Ground. 

1957-58 

1976-77 

EARLY THIRD KIT 

With both our home red and yellow away U-Win kits deemed 

unsuitable, Forest wore this rare combination at Bloomfield Road. 

Martin O’Neill can be seen wearing the previous season’s white 

away shirts, minus the logo of supplier Umbro, whilst the shorts 

were also without branding (in that era, not impossible they were 

purchased from a local shop!). The shirt design was largely the 

same as Blackpool’s whose, by no coincidence, were also made 

by Umbro. Despite the promotion that Brian Clough would finally 

secure that season, we suffered a 1-0 defeat in what was an 

extremely popular away day fixture in the 1970s. 

PLAYOFF UPS AND DOWNS 

We finished third in just our second season back 

in the Championship, earning a play-off semifinal 

with Blackpool. Chris Cohen celebrates here 

with his teammates and the travelling fans after 

scoring an early goal in the first leg. Our away kit 

had a chequerboard pattern with two shades of 

navy blue used in a half and half colour scheme, 

complete with red and white trim. With no third 

kit, it was used on multiple occasions and would 

be reused on one occasion the following season. 

2009-10

PLAIN KITS 

We simplified our shirts in 2012 to the 

point that we had no white trim at all, 

a rare feature. There were, however, 

different tones of red throughout the kit 

to bring it life, modelled here by Darius 

Henderson. Likewise, our opponents kept 

it simple, taking direct inspiration from 

those shirts worn decades earlier with a 

v-shape underneath a flappy collar, nicely 

finished off with their sponsor following 

suit in the shirt’s colour scheme. A late 

penalty for Forest converted by Lewis 

McGugan rescued a hard-earned point. 

2012-13 

2013-14 

GOALS GALORE 

In 2014, we made a return to a royal 

blue away kit that gave reminders of 

the 1950s kits in a modern template, 

and proved to be a popular design. 

Our opponents Blackpool were in their 

usual white with orange trim, in what 

felt like a repetitive design with the 

usual bright blue sponsor. The game 

itself was full of goals despite only 

being 1-0 at half time. Gary Gardner 

(pictured) grabbed himself a goal, 

with both teams exchanging leads 

before finishing an exciting 4-4 draw. 

TANGERINE SASH 

A football kit featuring a bold diagonal sash 

rarely looks bad and Blackpool here is no 

exception. Their plain smart design would 

also see the sash continue around to the back 

of the shirt to complete the look, which not 

even a brightly coloured sponsor could ruin. 

Henri Lansbury (pictured) shows our first 

kit since returning to Adidas but it was an 

afternoon to forget. A first half red card for 

Djamel Abdoun could have been forgotten 

after Karl Darlow saved the resulting penalty 

but a stoppage time Stephen Dobbie goal 

would win it for the Tangerines.

OPPOSITION OVERVIEW

The last couple of seasons 

have been a rollercoaster 

ride for Fulham; up and 

down, up and down. They 

were promoted to the 

Premier League in 2018, 

relegated a season later, 

back up in 2020 via the 

play-offs, and back down 

last season. 

Fulham enjoyed some good 

moments last season – including 

a memorable win over Liverpool 

at Anfield – but they did not come 

often enough and therefore The 

Cottagers lost their place in topflight. 

Scott Parker left the club 

in the summer, to be replaced by 

Portuguese coach Marco Silva. 

So far, it has proved to be a 

successful appointment. The 

44-year-old Lisbon-born manager 

knows the English game well. 

After managing Estoril and 

Sporting CP in his home country, 

Mr Marinakis appointed Silva as 

head coach of Olympiacos. He then 

took charge of Hull City in January 

2017 but could not save them from 

relegation from the top tier and left 

at the end of the season. 

Shortly afterwards, he joined 

Watford and steered them to the 

to top half of the Premier League 

but left in January 2018 and joined 

Everton that summer. 

Silva was the manager of 

Everton for one and half-seasons. 

In his first full season, the team 

finished a creditable eighth in the 

Premier League but he was sacked in 

December of 2019 after a poor 

run of form. 

Last summer Silva signed a 

three-year contract with Fulham, 

continuing his journey in England. In 

an interview with The Guardian last 

August, he said: “We need to try and 

get off this rollercoaster that we’re 

on. We need to break that cycle. “ 

The coach wants the rollercoaster 

to go up and stay that way. For now, 

Fulham are focusing on achieving 

promotion. So far, so good. The 

Cottagers started their season by 

winning four of their first five games. 

Since that excellent start, there have 

been highs and lows. 

Ahead of Wednesday‘s home 

match versus Cardiff, Silva‘s 

men had collected eight points 

from a possible 15 over their last 

five matches. 

Sat in third and only two points 

behind West Brom before the 

midweek round of fixtures, Fulham 

are firmly in the promotion reckoning 

again. There is still a long way to go 

and a lot of football to be played. Will 

the rollercoaster go up this season? 

Time will tell but few would bet 

against Fulham being around the top 

places in the division all season.

PAULO GAZZANIGA 

The talented shot-stopper 

was born in Argentina. At 

the age of 15, he moved 

to Spain, where he joined 

Valencia‘s youth academy. 

He did not manage a firstteam 

appearance for the 

Spanish club and in 2011 he 

arrived in England – signing 

for Gillingham. He won 

his place in the starting 

XI, playing 20 matches in 

League Two and his form 

was noticed by Premier 

League club Southampton. 

He was The Saints backup 

keeper from 2012-2017, 

featuring 21 times in the 

Premier League during 

his time at the club. In the 

summer of 2017, he signed 

for Tottenham, reuniting 

him with manager Mauricio 

Pochettino. Gazzaniga and 

Pochettino – who worked 

together at Southampton 

and Spurs – were both 

born in Murphy, Argentina. 

Gazzaniga played 22 times 

in the top-flight for Spurs 

before signing for Fulham 

last summer. He has also 

spent time on loan in Spain 

with Rayo Vallecano and 

Elche. 

DEFENDEER: 

TOSIN ADARABIOYO 

This powerful central 

defender started his 

career with Manchester 

City. He joined the club 

at the young age of five. 

Adarabioyo progressed 

well and at the age of 14 he 

was playing with the Under 

18 side. Two years later he 

wore the captain‘s armband 

for that age group. Under 

manager Pep Guardiola 

he was promoted to City‘s 

first-team, appearing in 

the Champions League, 

Carabao Cup and FA Cup, 

but never the Premier 

League. In 2018-19 he 

spent the season on loan 

with West Bromwich 

Albion and the season 

after with Blackburn 

Rovers. Over those two 

season he gained valuable 

experience, featuring 63 

times in the Championship. 

In October 2020, he 

signed for Fulham on a 

permanent deal. The 23- 

year old appeared 32 times 

but could not help The 

Cottagers avoid relegation. 

This season he is proving 

to be an important part of 

Fulham‘s defence looking 

to bounce back to the 

Premier League. 

MIDFIELDER: 

JEAN MICHAEL SERI 

A creative midfielder, Seri 

was scouted by Porto 

while playing for ASEC 

Mimosas in his country 

of birth, Ivory Coast. He 

went to Porto on a loan 

deal, the following summer 

signing an agreement to 

stay in Portugal with Paços 

de Ferreira. He helped 

the Portuguese side take 

steps in the right direction; 

from narrowly avoiding 

relegation to missing out 

on a European place by just 

one point. He signed for 

French club Nice in 2015 

and quickly became a key 

player. The 2016-17 season 

was his best at the club, 

as he was picked for the 

Ligue 1 Team of the Year 

and Nice finished third. 

His performances drew 

attention from bigger clubs 

in Europe. In the summer 

of 2018, Fulham won the 

race for his signature. 

However, he took time 

to settle, being loaned to 

Galatasaray and Bordeaux, 

before becoming a 

regular this season in the 

Championship. 

FORWARD: 

ALEKSANDAR 

MITROVIC 

Mitrovic is argubaly the best 

striker in the Championship. 

At a young age, he quickly 

proved his goalscoring 

abilities with Partizan 

in Serbia. Belgian outfit 

Anderlecht were impressed 

by what they saw and 

signed him in 2013. With 

Anderlecht, he netted 44 

goals in 90 games, which 

convinced Premier League 

club Newcastle to sign him. 

He scored nine goals during 

his first season in England‘s 

top-flight as The Magpies 

were relegated. In February 

2018, he signed for Fulham 

on loan, and there he settled 

in quickly. He helped the 

team win promotion back to 

the Premier League, scoring 

12 goals in 17 Championship 

games. Fulham were 

relegated again in 2019, but 

Mitrovic scored 26 goals 

to fire them straight back 

up at the first attempt. 

The Serbian international 

struggled somewhat last 

season in the Premier League 

scoring just three times but 

he has been in brilliant form 

again this season, leading the 

Championship goalscoring 

charts with 12 goals in 12 

matches.

in 49 League games while at 

Craven Cottage. He joined FA

1959 and his solitary goal in 22

draw at Chelsea four months 

later, moving to Portsmouth in 

December 1961. He was later 

manager of Aston Villa’s 1982

Brian Williamson understudied 

Peter Grummitt as Forest were 

League Championship runners-up 

and FA Cup semi-finalists in 1966- 

67. Moving to the City Ground 

from Leeds United in February 

1966, he made 19 League 

appearances prior to joining 

Fulham in in November 1968 due 

to injury to Jack McClelland and 

the poor form of Ian Seymour. He 

played 12 League games before 

displaced by Malcolm Webster 

and decided to quit football in 

November 1969, becoming a 

security guard. 

MARK CROSSLEY 

One-time Fulham goalkeeper 

Mark Crossley was ever-present 

as Forest reached the FA Cup final 

in 1990-91. Signing professional at 

The City Ground in July 1987, he 

helped Forest to reach the League 

Cup and ZDS Cup finals in 1992. 

He starred as Forest regained 

top-flight status in 1993-94, then 

was ever-present as Frank Clark’s 

side were third in the Premier 

League in 1994-95. Making 303 

League appearances, he joined 

Middlesbrough in July 2000. He 

moved to Fulham in August 2003 

and played 20 League games 

while at Craven Cottage.

DANNY CULLIP 

One-time Reds central defender 

Danny Cullip helped Fulham to 

win promotion in 1996-97. Moving 

to Fulham from Oxford United 

in July 1996, he was given his 

League debut in the following 

month’s 1-0 victory at home to 

Hereford United and scored twice 

in 50 League games while at 

Craven Cottage prior to joining 

Brentford in February 1998. He 

joined Forest from Sheffield 

United in August 2005 and helped 

reach the League One play-offs 

in 2006-07, making 31 League 

appearances before moving to 

QPR in January 2007. 

JONATHAN GREENING 

One-time Forest midfielder 

Jonathan Greening appeared for 

Fulham in the 2010 UEFA Europa 

League final. The England U-21 

international initially joined on 

loan from West Brom in August 

2009 and the move was made 

permanent the following summer. 

His only goal in 33 League games 

overall came in their 1-0 win at 

home to Portsmouth in February 

2010 and he helped take Fulham 

to an FA Cup sixth round replay 

that season. He reunited with 

Steve McClaren at Forest in 

July 2011, making 49 League 

appearances while Trentside. 

PAJTIM KASAMI 

Switzerland international 

midfielder Pajtim Kasami played 

for both Fulham and Forest. 

Moving to Craven Cottage from 

Italian side Palermo in July 2011, 

his three goals in 38 League 

games for Fulham included a 

stunning strike in their 4-1 victory 

at Crystal Palace in October 2013. 

He joined Greek side Olympiakos 

in July 2014 and was loaned to 

Forest for the 2016-17 campaign. 

Scoring twice in 25 League 

outings while at The City Ground, 

his half-volley gave Forest an 

early lead in our 3-2 defeat at 

Fulham in February 2017.

Andy Reid’s Under 23s suffered their 

first league defeat in five matches 

when beaten by a single goal by 

Stoke’s Under 23s in Newcastleunder-Lyme 

last Monday. 

The Reds, playing in the distinctive 

luminous yellow and orange change 

kit, included Cafu, Xande Silva 

and Mohamed Drager from Steve 

Cooper’s first team squad to get 

extra minutes in their legs. 

The side was stronger than the XI 

fielded in the 6-2 reverse in the 

Premier League Cup at QPR the 

preceding week, when a number of 

youngsters were on international duty. 

The Reds’ youngsters changed from 

the usual diamond formation to adopt 

the 3-4-1-2 system recently used by 

the first team, with Silva and Julian 

Larsson leading the line and Ateef 

Konate just behind. Leading scorer 

Will Swan dropped to the bench. 

The game on a rainy evening in 

Staffordshire swung on two key 

moments. 

Firstly, in the 27th minute a sweeping 

move from one end of the pitch to 

the other resulted in a penalty for 

Forest. Cafu took the spot kick but 

Stoke keeper Nathan Broome saved 

with a strong outstretched arm as 

Cafu tried to slot the ball down the 

middle of the goal. 

Then, with 11 minutes left, Stoke 

grabbed the only goal of the game 

when striker Douglas James-Taylor 

powered a ferocious effort from 

just inside the right hand side of the 

penalty area high past Nicky Hogarth. 

The Reds had ten shots, five of which 

were on target, which was more than 

their hosts but it was Stoke who took 

the three points. 

The result meant that Stoke 

leapfrogged Forest into fourth in the 

Premier League 2 Division 2 table, 

with The Reds slipping a place to fifth.

”It was a tough game with 

the conditions and pitch not 

particularly good, so it was it 

was a decent test for our lads. 

It’s always good to test them 

in different circumstances and 

scenarios. 

“I can’t really fault the work rate 

and, maybe, if we had scored 

the penalty in the first half then 

it might have been different. 

Unfortunately, that wasn’t to 

be but there were some decent 

performances. 

“We tried a different shape 

which will help us have a bit 

more flexibility moving forward. 

I think it’s important that we 

give the players different tests 

and different formations so 

that when they step on in their 

careers they have it in the locker. 

“Steve (Cooper) also wanted 

some of the players around 

his squad to get some minutes 

under the belt. 

“I’m disappointed that we didn’t 

come away with anything from 

the game. We most certainly 

deserved something. 

“We’ve got a tough test now. We 

go to Fulham on Friday who are 

doing well. These are the type of 

weeks that really test the players. 

It makes it feel like it’s more like 

a first team week for us where 

the first team will have to play 

Saturday, Tuesday and we’re 

playing Monday and Friday.”

TRUST CEO GRAHAM MORAN HONOURED WITH 

BRITISH EMPIRE MEDAL 

Earlier this summer, Graham Moran, BEM, Nottingham Forest Community Trust Chief 

Executive Officer was honoured with a British Empire Medal in The Queen’s Birthday 

Honours List for 2021. 

The Queen’s Birthday Honours List demonstrates 

the extraordinary efforts made by individuals in 

the United Kingdom who have put others before 

themselves. 

This award recognises Graham’s service to 

football and the community in Nottingham and 

Nottinghamshire. Over the last 14 years, Graham 

has worked alongside many people within the 

Community Trust and football club under the 

Nottingham Forest flag supporting local people 

through the delivery of community engagement 

programmes. 

Graham recently attended the award ceremony, 

with his wife Mandy and received a British Empire 

Medal from Nottinghamshire Lord-Lieutenant, 

Sir John Peace, who incidentally is a Patron of 

Nottingham Forest Community Trust. 

Graham Moran, BEM, said, “I am delighted to have 

collected this award and want to thank everyone 

connected with Nottingham Forest Football 

Club for their invaluable support and the many 

people who have helped me along way during my 

30 years involvement in professional football. 

“The last 14 years have been very important to 

me, having the opportunity to do a job I love at the 

greatest football club in the world!” 

Graham continued, “I want to thank Nottingham 

Forest owner, Mr Marinakis, Nicholas Randall, QC, 

Giannis Vrentzos, and, more recently, Dane Murphy 

for investing significantly in the work of Nottingham 

Forest Community Trust and everyone else at 

Nottingham Forest who have helped create one of 

the strongest relationships between a professional 

football club and its official charity in the country.”

ANDY REID, RYAN YATES AND DJED SPENCE ATTEND 

FOREST FOOTBALL FESTIVAL 

Earlier this month, Nottingham Forest Community Trust (NFCT) 

hosted the Forest Football Festival in partnership with the Nottingham Schools’ 

Football Association (NSFA). 

This action-packed event welcomed over 20 local 

schools to The Forest Sports Zone with teams 

eager to play football and, of course, have fun. 

The day saw hundreds of children from different 

schools across Nottingham, as well as their 

teachers, staff, and coaches from Nottingham 

Forest Community Trust. 

The children were also treated to appearances 

from former Reds legend and now Under 23 head 

coach, Andy Reid, as well as first team players, 

Ryan Yates and Djed Spence who were keen to see 

some local talent and award children with their 

certificates and medals. 

Graham Moran, BEM, Nottingham Forest 

Community Trust Chief Executive Officer, was 

in attendance and was delighted to see such a 

fantastic turn out. 

Graham said “We are proud to organise large 

events such as this that celebrate the development 

of community football. It goes without saying, that 

we wouldn’t be able to recruit so many schools 

without the support of the NSFA. 

“For us, it’s important that every school in the city 

has the opportunity to take part. Previously, we’ve 

operated similar events on a smaller scale. However, 

this is the start of something much bigger and better. 

We want to make sure we have a regular calendar of 

events that schools can access throughout the year, 

for both girls’ and boys’ football.” 

Andy Reid arrived as the tournament was in full flow 

to the delight of the children involved. Andy was on 

hand to offer advice and words of wisdom to the 

youngsters and gave his thoughts on the occasion. 

Andy said on the day: “It’s a great atmosphere 

and the kids are all really enjoying it. Football is 

supposed to be fun and it’s clear there is plenty 

of that today. There are some good players down 

here and I have been watching a lot of the games. 

“It’s not necessarily about who’s the best though, 

football must aim to be inclusive and it’s great to 

see players and teams from all over the city. 

Nottingham Forest Community Trust would like 

to thank all the schools’ involved, the Nottingham 

Schools’ FA and of course, Andy Reid, Ryan Yates 

and Djed Spence for attending the event. 

In addition, the Trust would like to mention the 

post-16 education students, who were present for 

the whole event and helped coordinate and run 

proceedings.

FOREVER STARS 

Forever Stars is an East Midlands charity dedicated to supporting families who have 

suffered a stillbirth or infant loss 

The charity were very kindly donated a table for 

the Blackpool match by long-standing Forest 

hospitality client Dave Wheat of Nottingham 

Label Company 

Here is an example of their work as told by Daniel 

and Laura Barnett: 

“Harrison Barnett, our beautiful boy was stillborn in 

August 2016. He has since become our inspiration 

We first became aware of Forever Stars whilst 

Laura was being cared for on the labour ward, 

following complications with Harrison’s birth. 

Forever Stars had fundraised and built a Serenity 

Suite - a bereavement suit at the QMC Hospital 

- which we were able to use, meaning we could 

spend time with Harrison giving him a naming 

ceremony and enjoy some home comforts with our 

families away from the medical sterile environment 

of the labour ward. 

When your child dies nothing really makes it any 

better, and from our point of view that moment 

now defines the rest of our lives. 

What you do learn though is that having wonderful 

family and friends around gradually gets you back 

to somewhere like you were before. 

With the help of our wonderful family and friends 

we have been able to fundraise to support other 

families who go through the unimaginable too. 

Forever Stars’ Forever In Bloom campaign was 

something we passionately became involved with 

to help create a remembrance garden for all those 

babies taken too soon and amazingly Harrison 

now has a permanent memorial there so we can 

visit and have a quiet space to think of him and so 

others can do the same. 

We wish to thank everyone at Forever Stars, 

particularly the Daniels Family, and especially 

Richard, as for me as a baby loss dad I needed a role 

model and Richard has very much become that. 

Before Harrison died we had never really done any 

fundraising, but the fact that our family and friends 

rallied around us to support us means the world to us. 

A final word on Harrison. As a baby loss Dad, I, 

Daniel, was recently asked what Harrison means 

to me, this was probably the toughest question I’ve 

ever had to answer. Well he’s my son, first thought 

in the morning and my last thought at night. The 

very best version of me. My inspiration and the 

kid I imagine holding hands with every time I cross 

Trent Bridge.”

Stadium on Friday evening (29th October) to 

meet Mark Warburton’s Rangers in the Sky Bet 

Championship, with a 7.45pm kick off. 

Forest have won their last four matches on the road 

for the first time since the 1994/95 season. 

Reds supporters have received a full and final 

allocation of 2,929 tickets in the upper and lower tiers 

of the School End Stand for the Sky Bet Championship 

fixture and tickets are now on general sale.
