The science bit
The term ‘fibre’ is often misused. In most cases what is
branded as ‘fibre broadband’ actually involves some
amount of outdated copper cable somewhere down the
line, even if it’s fibre broadband that you’re paying for.
This is what’s known as ‘Fibre-to-the-Cabinet’ (FTTC) -
those big green boxes that we sometimes see at the end
of the road. Up until now, this is as far as the optical fibre
that carries the signal reaches. From there, the cabling is
split, and traditional copper wires carry the signal to
however many houses there are in the road that are
connected to the cabinet. This shared signal and outdated
copper cabling can cause bottlenecks that result in slow
or dropped connections, especially at peak times.

SDD and free Wi-Fi router * and you’re good to go
