VISION:

For the McLaren Vale Wine Show to be recognised as the premier regional wine show in Australia.

MISSION:

1. To showcase McLaren Vale wines and the region to local, interstate and international markets.

2. To ensure that excellence in varietal expression, viticulture, production, provenance and subregionality

are celebrated.

3. To develop a vehicle that provides experiences and creates value for the producers and assists them

in effectively promoting their products.

4. To contribute in building the presence and prestige that is brand McLaren Vale.

5. To innovate, engage and educate in order to enable the producers to connect with media and the

general public to build interest in the region as a whole.

6. To have best practice administration with a diverse and strong committee structure, as well as

traceable and transparent use of funds.

Chair of Judges - Tony Love

Tony Love is a South Australian based professional wine reviewer

and writer for a range of print and online mastheads. He has

been published in the Halliday Wine Companion and Halliday

Magazine, Wine Business Magazine, and Winepilot.com, and

currently is the wine writer for InDaily/InReview and SALife. He

also provides specialist consulting and content to regional and

national authorities, corporate entities, and a range of other travel

and lifestyle platforms. He has been a career journalist and editor

in newspaper, magazine and the book industries Australia-wide,

his roles including senior restaurant reviewer, Taste section editor,

and wine writer at The Advertiser, as well as national wine industry

editor and writer for NewsCorp’s Australian daily mastheads until

late 2018. He was named 2018 Legend of the Vine (SA) by the Wine

Communicators of Australia.

Lots of fun to judge with strong debate from the judges. A range of interesting styles with some lovely

wines across the board. The gold medal wine generated the most conversation / debate, and begged

to be drunk with food.

Class Comments:

A mixed class to judge. The better wines have an obvious and subtle pedigree where all components

are in sync and flow. Other wines show a forced component of sugar or acidity that dominates. Rose is

a lesson in subtlety. Great to see a few less classical Rose varietals making good in this arena. A lot of

Class Comments:

Lots of really nice wines with full fruit profiles and judicious use of oak. Stand out wines had a liveliness

to life, more presence and fruit power. Great consistency across the board from a strong vintage.

Powerful styles, but well managed ripeness and oak for the most part. Best wines showed fresh dark

fruits with fine, graphite-like tannin. No doubt some will age gracefully for many years in the cellar.

A lot of well made, delicious wines. The ones that got rewarded showed personality and nuance with

vibrancy. Many were looking a little tired already, dominated by some big oak.

awarded fruit flavour and depth as well as balance and finesse. Lots of discussion on this line up.

Excellent fruit weight and structure, some looking developed so the winners had a vibrancy and

excitement on the palate.

Class Comments:

When Cabernet is made with thoughtfulness from the vine to the bottle it can be a serious player in the

Australian landscape. When the crop is high, it’s picked too ripe and pressed into too much new oak,

it becomes a challenging wine to drink. The consumer’s palate must be front of mind when dealing

with this grape. The wines that were rewarded showed not only a vibrancy for their age, but exciting

winemaking to give lift and a seductive perfume. Go Cabernet!

Younger to older, fresher to more robust, Grenache has shown an extraordinary style diversity. We have

seen terroir expressed, and a generational shift in winemaking come to the fore. The best of vintages

2019 and 2020 were textural with solid varietal character. Many more youthful iterations from 2021 are

vibrant and light-hearted styles with purity and elegance. Overall the class represents exciting times for

McLaren Vale Grenache.

Incredible approachability on the young Nero’s. Balanced and structured with lovely lift. The Tempranillo

entries show that 2020 was not an excellent year for the variety, with the fruit looking a little tired

already. Lovely class of well handled fruit driven wines. Some lovely tannin profiles really drove the higher

pointed wines. Restraint is the optimum word with making these beautiful Mediterranean varieties

wines showed their true varietal characters with careful, considered winemaking. Underripe / overripe

Class Comments:

Spectacular fun to judge this class with 83% strike rate of medals which is great to see. Purity of fruit

obvious in many wines with layers of fruit, stalk and oak tannin, bunch, lees work and a whole lot of other

things happening. The layers are the interesting point of difference in the way we judged the wines. The

gold medal wines were brought together to form a final blend in a thoughtful and balanced way. While

lots of wines showed obvious reduction and advanced characters which held them off progressing any

further, the best wines were shining lights that were elegant and medium bodied.

Class Comments:

These blends are looking on the drier side. They look more like an after thought than a purposeful

thought at times. Freshness and purity of fruit needs to be a priority in this style. Maybe they are

better off sticking to other styles that they do best or that are more exciting for a mediterranean,

contemporary climate.

Lovely class to judge and see, some lovely tannin work and fresh, beautiful aromatics. This is what

McLaren Vale does well and will be exciting to watch into the future. Balance of ripeness and freshness

was what sets the better wines apart from the others. A concerning number of faulty wines. Alcohol

heat stood out in many samples and many were dry.

Class Comments:

Eleven entries across several red varieties and styles exhibited a declaration to the craft of fine

winemaking for more than a decade. Four ‘finalists’ were able to show great consistency across all

three entries, with their trajectory of development and maturity clearly on show. When older wines are

now tiring, it is worth considering the legitimacy to enter this class.

A word on the Museum classes from Tony Love

It is noted that we are seeing a fall in entries for the Museum classes. Perhaps the Icon class has stolen

some of their thunder. Our back stories are still an essential identification of individual journeys, as well

as the history of the region, and we encourage winemakers to look into the cellars and be proud of

where they have stepped before. It is impossible for us to know where we are heading in the future if we

don’t know where and how far we have come from the past.
