Is education important for kids to succeed?
Written by Charlotte Picardo and Proofread by Laura Casanova
Education has become such an integral part of all our lives; however, it’s important to be aware of our privileges. Some
students may not have access to this facility/service due to their parents’ lack of finances. This topic has been quite controversial
in political debates and in general conversations as well. I thought it would be great to discuss to what extent an
education is important for kids to succeed. This is a point of view from a student in Grade 12.
This topic could be explored on many levels, such as by considering the different types of schools students have access to
and to assess whether these schools help students with their education and moving forward in their career.
1.Compulsory schools: Schools that students are required to attend as imposed by a rule from the government.
2.Home schools: Also known as homeschooling or EHE (elective home education), education takes place at home rather
than in school or other institutions.
3.Charter schools: A type of school that receives funding from the government but operates independently from the
school district it is in.
4.Grammar schools: This is quite different from the usual schools available, and pupils are selected to attend this school
based on their overall academic performance, making it extremely prestigious.
5.State schools: Also known as public schools, they tend to educate students without a fee. They offer in-person and virtual
learning in several parts of the world.
www.NewHeightsEducation.org
4. Reading/writing learners
Most educational systems commonly include essays at some point, whether it be in English literature, geography, economics
or sociology. Students who prefer reading over the information rather than listening to it fall into this category. This learning
style can be observed in several ways, some of which are through the form of writing essays, doing research and reading books
and articles. Reading and writing are basic forms of learning even in a new language, and are also skills that are important for
school, work and home. It also helps to broaden vocabulary to communicate effectively to others.
Now that you have an overview of the types of education institutions available and the learning styles, it’s good to be aware
that no matter which of the above is your preferred learning style, education remains the uppermost priority because of all that
it helps us do in our careers. I would say that education is important for kids to succeed, especially given the fact that we all
communicate through reading, writing and speaking, which are all involved in education itself. Understanding and being able
to respond also helps us determine the difference between the right and wrong. Hence, New Heights Educational Group strives
to focus on providing this service to all - education is close to our hearts. Our group promotes literacy for children and adults by
offering a range of student support services for their educational needs.

We all study and look at things differently. Learning techniques allow the coordination of students in grasping concepts
effectively and efficiently. This helps boost confidence as students are able to solve problems by coming up with solutions.
This can affect learning in order to communicate well and improve performance.
1.Visual learners
Visual learners are able to grasp knowledge through visual figures, such as drawing, mind maps, diagrams, directions,
presentations, pictures, posters and anything to do with images.
In this case, I would say that education contains all the aspects that visual learners prefer. It makes students view situations
differently, such as during a debate class, answering exam questions, and giving opinionated views when delivering
presentations on the same topic. It helps us think outside the box. Education gives us knowledge about the world around
us. Learning helps personal growth and opens doors to endless career possibilities.
2.Auditory learners
These students aren’t afraid to speak up, since they love the learning style of listening. They tend to learn subject matter
reinforced by sound rather than reading written notes. Listening plays an important role in our lives as it demonstrates
how closely we pay attention to details and thoughts. Especially in education, listening to teachers’ lectures helps us communicate
our thoughts and opinions to another individual, which is key in establishing relationships with those around us.
3.Kinesthetic learners
These students grasp studies by performing physical activities and practically experiencing concepts. Some examples
favored by this learning style include games, making things with hands and gestures, remembering words by writing them
several times and using whiteboards. Education is a form of acquiring knowledge, skills and morals, which can take place
through a variety of techniques including practical work. For instance, this work can include making a chart or a poster
for a presentation, a skill that is vital even in the workplace as clients or directors may often ask that information be explained
in a way that is much more appealing and attractive to customers.

worldwide – public and private, for-profit and nonprofit, large and small – are eligible to submit nominations. The 2021

banquet, winners will be celebrated instead during a virtual ceremony on Wednesday, December 8.
More than 3,700 nominations from organizations of all sizes and in virtually every industry were submitted this year for
consideration in a wide range of categories, including Company of the Year, Marketing Campaign of the Year, Best New
Product or Service of the Year, Startup of the Year, Corporate Social Responsibility Program of the Year, and Executive
of the Year, among others. This year’s competition also featured a number of categories to recognize organizations’ and
individuals’ responses to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Some of the judges comments include:
--You are doing a noble job in education.

education, but the dreams of families in Ohio and beyond. These families come from all backgrounds and all school choice
options. NHEG is a strong proponent of education reform and advocating for all families left behind in traditional schools.
Anyone that asks for help receives it. Anyone from anywhere can take our online courses and participate in our leadership
groups. We have accomplished so much since our creation in June of 2006, but there is more to be done.
Here are some of the goals, that you can help bring to fruition:
NHEG envisions a Computer Lab and Learning Center.
These labs are to provide a space for academic research, academic studies, school assignments, educational planning,
testing and tutoring services, and other educational options. The labs can be used by families with students enrolled in any
type of school or after-school program, for homeschool resources and as a teaching space for themed co-op/enrichment
classes. The facilities will enable NHEG to teach, assist and provide technology resources to families for self-learning.
Of course, your donations will help expand our programs to help reach more students and their families as well as secure
locations for our offices and our very own library.
Our short- and long-term goals include: obtaining a building for our programs and activities, securing paid staff, implementing
a sensory room for those with disabilities, and creating a daycare for young mothers and fathers.
To reach this goal we need $438,707.
This is the average cost over a lifetime to support someone without a high school diploma. After we reach the above goals
we will start planning for a Montessori School.

Educators: Learning loss is not top concern

EdSurge
Justin Reich and Jal Mehta | Sep 7, 2021
“Learning loss,” getting back to normal” and reviving lagging test scores
are not the top concerns facing schools, according to input from 4,000
students interviewed by over 200 teachers. These issues are promoted
by the media and policymakers as the primary challenges in K-12
education, but those closest to the classroom say the biggest concerns
are rundown school facilities and an “overstuffed curriculum” that lacks
opportunity for personal connection and interest-based exploration,
among others.

According to the National Center for PTSD, there are three factors that
increase the risk of a child developing PTSD. They are: how severe
the traumatic event is, the parental reaction to it, and the physical
proximity of the child to the event. Children who have experienced the
most severe traumas are at the greatest risk. When the families of
distressed children are supportive and/or when children are further
removed from the trauma, they are less likely to exhibit symptoms of
PTSD.
PTSD symptoms in children can include:
• recurring nightmares
• sleeplessness
• fearfulness
• irritability
• agitation
• intense vigilance
• avoidance
• separation anxiety
• change in school performance
• emotional numbness
• social withdrawal
• lost of interest in activities
• angry outbursts
• difficulty concentrating
• guilt
• worry for others
• physical complaints
Children with PTSD often have persistent, frightening thoughts and
are preoccupied with danger. They may reenact the traumatic event
in repetitive play, retell it often, or use art to illustrate what happened.
However, unlike most children, their reactions are compulsive and do
not seem to reduce their level of anxiety.
Some children are able to recover from a traumatic event by themselves,
while others cannot. Children with severe symptoms can recover
by participating in therapy with trained mental health professionals
who have expertise in treating PTSD victims. Medication to alleviate
serious symptoms may be prescribed by a psychiatrist. Taking medicine
can assist children in coping with school and other daily living
activities while treatment continues. Support groups or group therapy
can be useful in helping children learn that they are not the only ones
who have PTSD. Groups also provide a safe atmosphere in which children
can share personal feelings.
A child’s teacher and/or school counselor can play an important role
in recognizing and facilitating a child’s recovery from a severe
Help the Child at School
Provide a familiar, calm, consistent environment
Create an atmosphere in which the child feels safe to reenact or discuss
a trauma, or express his or her feelings without judgment -- yet
do not pressure the child to do so
Be aware of certain activities that may trigger the child’s anxiety or
regression and safeguard against them
If you suspect that the child is a danger to him or herself or others,
seek help immediately
Elicit Parental Cooperation
After observing and recording the child’s behaviors, share the information
with the parent
Listen to the parent’s ideas concerning the child and any exposure
he or she may have had to a traumatic event * If deemed appropriate,
encourage the parent to seek a professional opinion concerning
the child’s condition
Ways To Help a Parent
Stress that the parent should consider the child’s developmental
level when discussing a traumatic event
State the importance of keeping a child’s routine as normal as possible,
and that the child may need extra love, support and reassurance
to feel safe
Encourage the parent to listen if the child wants to talk, but not to
force him or her to do so
Stress the importance of reassuring a child that his or her feelings
are normal
Emphasize that the child needs to hear that he or she is not to
blame for what happened
Comment that distressed children often exhibit regressive behaviors
such as those of a younger child, so being critical of a child’s
immature actions could be detrimental
Since feeling out-of-control is a common symptom, propose that the
parent provide opportunities for the child to make simple decisions
for him or herself
If the parent seems distraught, suggest that he or she try to find
emotional support, so that the parent can be available to help the
child
Keep lines of communication open between the parent and school
personnel
EDUCATOR’S GUIDE TO OBSESSIVE-COMPULSIVE DISORDER
IN CHILDREN
By Leah Davies, M.Ed.
Individuals with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) have difficulty processing
information. They do the same thing again and again to alleviate
their unwanted and distressful thoughts. These illogical thoughts, urges
and images are called obsessions and can include marked fear of germs,
being hurt, hurting someone, and doubting themselves. It is estimated
that one to two percent of American children have OCD and that a correct
diagnosis and appropriate treatment are often unavailable.
Obsessions lead to compulsive actions or rituals that individuals are driven
to perform. Some examples are: excessive hand washing, hoarding, arranging
things in exact order, and repeatedly checking to see if the stove
or faucet is turned off. Other compulsions are continually repeating words
or numbers and avoiding certain objects or situations that an individual
may perceive as harmful.
Although OCD usually begins in adolescence or young adulthood, elementary-aged
children, as well as preschoolers, have been diagnosed with
OCD. In primary school children with OCD usually become aware that
their thinking or actions are different than those of their peers and family
members. They often begin to think of themselves as being stupid or crazy.
Other common reactions are embarrassment or hiding or suppressing
their symptoms. As a result their self-esteem is adversely affected.
OCD can significantly interfere with a child’s normal functioning, academic
progress and social relationships. Particular obsessions seem to
change as children grow older. Some sufferers experience a progression
of traits, while others have symptoms that increase and decrease over
time. The disorder may last a lifetime.
A child with OCD may exhibit the following behaviors at school:
• Rechecks work repeatedly;
• Erases and rewrites assignments;
• Orders or arranges things in a certain way;
• Insists that his or her things must stay in exactly the same place;
• Repeats words or numbers over and over;
• Tries to avoid certain areas of school;
• Hoards items;
• Tattles on other students;

Questions to Consider
1. Has the child been diagnosed with other disorders such as
Tourette’s syndrome, tic disorder, panic disorder, social phobia,
developmental disability, depression, oppositional defiant
disorder or attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder?
2. How long (weeks, months, years) has the behavior been
extreme?
3. How often during a day does he or she exhibit illogical behavior?
4. In what ways do the child’s actions interfere with his or her
daily living activities?
If a child’s behavior is extreme, the teacher, school counselor and/
or administrator need to meet with a parent or guardian to share
their concerns.
Children with OCD are usually treated by an adolescent psychiatrist
with a combination of cognitive and behavioral techniques
and, at times, medication. The disorder often occurs in families,
but a child may be diagnosed with OCD without a family history
of the disorder. Open communication among all of those involved
with the child is necessary to increase understanding of the complex
issues associated with OCD.

NHEG OFFICE CURRICULUM LIBRARY
We would like to offer educational events, computer labs, public events,
tutoring and other educational activities in this location and plan to continue
offering classes, tutoring, and some afterschool events in Defiance.
Short term goals: Our vision includes reacquiring a building in Defiance,
Ohio. This can be achieved either by obtaining funding or a donated building.
This building will house our curricula library, public educational events
and providing fill-in-the-gaps, high-quality tutoring, place for families to
come in and use technology including computers, obtain a GED, or educate
their own children on site.
Families will be able to walk in without an appointment to ask any educational
question.
Longer term goals:
We foresee a daycare for young mothers and fathers in high school
(main target) and college and
will provide affordable daycare in hopes of keeping them in school.

I’ve been trying to find virtual opportunities to volunteer, and I must say, this non profit organization has helped me find that. That’s
not all, this organization is professional, sincere, generous, and very thoughtful about the needs of others. They are not only virtual,
but also remote with their own headquarters. Working with them, I was able to pursue something I loved while helping others. I received proper
training and met lots of great people. I am proud to say, I am happy to be part of helping this wonderful nonprofit organization.

I had a great experience volunteering with this nonprofit. Everyone was very professional and kind. Ethics weren’t being compromised anywhere and
law was being followed carefully everywhere. We recruited a lot of really dedicated people with skills needed to get things done. I’m still enjoying all
the talent I see there especially among the creatives I worked most with. They even had work from home figured out way before the pandemic!

OUR RECIPES
CHICKEN PICATTA RECIPE
INGREDIENTS
• 2-6 oz. pieces of skinless, boneless breasts of chicken
• 1 cup flour for dredging
• 4 tablespoons of butter
• ¼ cup white wine
• ¼ cup chicken stock
• 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
• 2 tablespoons capers
• 2 tablespoons flat leaf Italian chopped parsley
• Salt and pepper to taste
OUR RECIPES
DIRECTIONS
1. Cut the chicken breasts in half, place plastic wrap over the meat
and beat with a meat tenderizer until the surface is flat. Season
both sides of the chicken with salt and pepper, and dredge with
flour. Place a medium saucepan on high heat; add 2 tablespoons
of butter. Once the butter is melted, and the pan is adequately
hot, add the chicken and sear on both sides. Cook the chicken
until browned on both sides, then place on a plate. Deglaze the
pan with the white wine, chicken stock, and lemon juice. Once the
liquid has reduced by half add the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter
and stir. Add the parsley and season with salt and pepper. Pour
the sauce over the chicken and serve. Enjoy!
KILLER SHRIMP RECIPE
INGREDIENTS
• 2 quarts chicken broth
• 2 tablespoons rosemary
• 5 cloves garlic, minced
• 2 teaspoons ground black pepper
• 1 teaspoon celery seed
• 1 teaspoon dried thyme
• 1/2 teaspoon fennel seed
• 1 cup clam juice
• 3 ounces tomato paste
• 1 cup butter
• 1 cup chardonnay or sauvignon blanc
• 2 pounds shrimp with tails or tails and shells (messier, but more like the original!)
• 1 (1 pound) loaf Italian of French bread for dipping
MOODY DINER’S EASY PEANUT BUTTER PIE RECIPE
INGREDIENTS
• 8 oz. cream cheese, room temp
• 1/2 cup smooth or chunky peanut butter
• 1 cup powdered sugar, sifted after measuring
• 12 oz. Cool Whip (I only had 8 oz. extra creamy on hand, which worked fine.)
• 1 chocolate cookie crust (Keebler’s or other), or graham cracker crust
• or go to links for homemade
• optional: hot fudge sauce, Nutella, Hershey’s Chocolate Sauce, chopped milk chocolate
added to crust.
DIRECTIONS
1. Combine the first 4 ingredients in a bowl, pour into the pie crust.
2. Refrigerate or freeze for several hours before serving.
DIRECTIONS
1. Add all ingredients except the wine and the shrimp to a large pot and bring to a boil Reduce to a low simmer and cook for 30 minutes to
1 hour.
2. Add the wine and cook for an additional 1 hour.
3. Just before serving, stir in the shrimp and cook about 3 minutes until shrimp are opaque. Serve the shrimp in a bowl, almost totally covered
with broth, and with bread for soaking up all the yummy broth. This is also great over linguini, which is another way it was offered
at the restaurant. You’ll still want bread for sponging at the end.
ROMANIAN MITITEI (LITTLE SAUSAGES) RECIPE (GLUTEN FREE)
INGREDIENTS
• 2 lbs fatty pork
• 2.5lbs fatty beef
• 2 tsp salt
• 3 tsp baking soda
• 1/2 tsp black pepper
• 1/4 tsp thyme,
• 8oz beef broth or seltzer water
• 1 oz oil
• 3 tsp spicy paprika
• 16 cloves garlic mashed/pressed to paste
DIRECTIONS
1. Mix meat together really well in a large bowl. Add spices, one by one until well mixed in the meat.
2. Add beef broth (or seltzer) to the mix and the oil until well mixed in.
3. Add garlic last and mix until well combined.
4. *note - The difference between the beef broth and seltzer is that the seltzer will make the sausages more “puffy” when combined with the
baking soda and allowed to rise. For more dense sausages, the beef broth is perfectly fine. The amount of garlic used can be adjusted to taste.
THE INCREDIBLE HEALTHY, CRUNCHY, CHEWY & YUMMY GRANOLA COOKIERECIPE (GLUTEN FREE)
INGREDIENTS
• 1 cup Earth Balance Soy Free Spread (gf,v,df, 0 transfats, Non-GMO) (RED CONTAIN-
ER)
• 3/4 cup Coconut Crystals
• 2 cups Almond Flour
• 2 Eggs
• 1 tsp. Double Strength vanilla
• 1 tsp. Cake Spice (Penzeys Spices)
• 4 cups Giddy Up & Go Granola (Green Script)
• 1 cup Dried Cranberries (Juiced Sweetened)
DIRECTIONS
1. Preheat oven to 350. Cream together the spread and coconut crystals until mixed well. GRADUALLY add the almond flour and mix well.
Add the eggs, vanilla extract and cake spice and mix well. Stir in the Giddy Up & Go Granola by hand along with the cranberries. Use
a small cookie scoop and drop onto a cookie sheet that is lined with a parchment baking sheet. Take another baking sheet and place
over cookies. Pat down using a spatula, flattening the cookies. Remove the baking sheet and bake at 350 for 12-14 minutes (start at
12 minutes) until edges are browned and center is chewy.
You can also mix off a little piece and fry it in a pan to adjust seasonings as you’d like before taking the next steps.
5. Cover the bowl and put it in the fridge for 2-8hrs. If you don’t want to use the entire mix, you can freeze the mix after 2 hrs in the fridge to save
it for the next time you want to use it.
6. After 2 hrs, take the bowl out and form sausage-length links in your palm that are about 1-1 .5 in thick and about 3in long.
7. Cook these on the grill until well done inside, being careful to turn them regularly so they don’t burn. Approximately 6-8 min on each side.
8. Serve immediately and enjoy!
