One of the readers who correctly identified the item was Dorothy Wendel from Mt. Carmel, IN. (Sorry Dorothy, I think I said you lived in Ohio!). Thanks, Dorothy Wendel, for being a part of The BEA- CON and for remembering all of the wonderful things your grandmother is sharing with you. Fast forward on life’s timeline. Over a year and a half ago, I researched pre-planning and the wonderful “gift” Nelson Elliott gave to his family before he passed away. I learned that preplanning takes a lot of thought and encompasses a number of legal documents. Not a process for the faint of heart. Two of our most respected neighbors are joining forces to help make preplanning easier. Nicole Wuestefeld and Melissa Scholl will share their knowledge with the community on Nov. 10 and 18. (See ad on page 7B). Now to move further back in history. Dearborn County, Indiana was founded in 1803 by Governor William Henry Harrison. The county was named after General Henry Dearborn who was the Secretary of War under President Thomas Jefferson. The original county has since been carved into what we know as Dearborn, Franklin, Ohio, Ripley, Switzerland, Farmers Fair Morning The beauty of the early morning of Farmers Fair was perfectly captured by Tally Yelton of Manchester as many began gathering in anticipation of the annual parade. Union, Wayne, and Fayette Counties. Never has a surname of Dearborn graced the address book in our community. Until now. I was attending church one Sunday morning when the most delightful couple came up and introduced themselves. Imagine my surprise to learn that Fred and Cheri Dearborn are the first descendants of General Henry Dearborn to ever reside in Dearborn County. Ever. The Dearborns have been a part of the Greendale community since 2003, two hundred years after the county was named after their ancestor. Before settling in Dearborn County, Mr. Dearborn was the Civilian Executive Assistant at Rock Island Arsenal (RIA) in Illinois. Mrs. Dearborn was also employed at the facility. Another fun fact- Arsenal Island is located on the Mississippi River between Davenport, Iowa, and Rock Island, Illinois. The arsenal is the only active foundry for the U.S. Army manufacturing ordnance and equipment such as artillery, gun mount, and aircraft weapons subsystems. Fred Dearborn was the general engineer of the Cannon Artillery Weapons Systems field office. He was the leading employee of the RIA and was dedicated to maintaining high-quality standards in all RIA-manufactured field artillery because of the coverage it provided American soldiers in combat. One could surmise that serving one’s country in the armed services runs thick in the Dearborn bloodline. While General Dearborn left his mark in history, his son, Henry Alexander Scammell Dearborn, also served in the military and political arena. He was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, Mayor of Roxbury, MA, and the Adjunct General of Massachusetts. Mr. Dearborn continued the family tradition through his career totaling thirty-one years in Civil Service. Last month’s item was given to a friend as a wedding gift in 1972. The twenty-five-inch-high item is a brass aftaba, also called a Mughal brass ewer. Typical Islamic ewers were used for handwashing. The aftaba eventually became a practical symbol of hospitality. Visitors are welcomed by pouring scented water from the aftaba over their hands and feet and into a basin. John A. New Deal Lives On Sharing Art, History, Natural Beauty Continued from page 1A the Batesville, Aurora, and Liberty post offices still display murals created during the Great Depression. The historic post office in Aurora, located at 501 3rd Street, boasts a mural painted by artist Henrik Martin Meyer entitled “Down to the Ferry.” This 12’ x 5’6” oil painting was completed in 1938. The next post office in our area featuring a mural is the Batesville post office, located on George Street in downtown Batesville. The post office was erected in 1938, the same year that artist Orville Carroll painted a 13’6 x 5’6” mural on canvas titled “Building the Industrial Foundation of Batesville.” Last but not least is the post office in Liberty. Constructed in 1937, artist Avery Johnson adorned the post office with a 12’3” x 4’3” mural titled “Autumn Fields.” While the artists’ names may be unfamiliar to you, they are certainly known to art connoisseurs. Meyer and Johnson were both renowned artists whose work is displayed in the Smithsonian “Building the Industrial Foundation of Batesville.” by artist Orville Carroll. American Art Institute. Johnson’s artwork often featured sea-landscape and was painted in watercolor. While Carroll’s artwork may not hang in the Smithsonian, the Indiana native hailed from New Albany and was known for his landscape paintings, illustrations, and murals. In addition to the mural in the Batesville post office, his murals can be found in the Osceola, Arkansas, and Harrodsburg, Kentucky post offices. Switching from The Section to work completed by the CCC and WPA in our area, head to Versailles, IN and Madison, IN, home to Versailles State Park and Clifty Falls State Park. From 1933 to 1938, the CCC was active in building roads, trails, gatehouses, shelters, bridges, shelters, and barns at Clifty Falls State Park. This beautiful park is comprised of 1,416 acres, some of which overlook the Ohio River. In 1939, WPA workers built the Oak Grove shelter, campground, and comfort station at the Versailles State Park. The next time you’re in the Aurora, Batesville, or Liberty areas, take a few minutes to stop by the post offices to appreciate the murals depicting the way of life in the 1930s. When you are hiking or picnicking at Clifty Falls State Park or Versailles State Park, you can thank the men who built the trails and shelters that still stand strong for us to enjoy today.
