Matchday 17 of the Sky Bet League
1 season brings together Wycombe
and Portsmouth for today’s fixture,
with the Chairboys eager to
recapture the form that saw them
win all six of their opening home
fixtures this term before Ipswich
prevented a magnificent seven 11
days ago.
Thank you for joining us back at
HP12 this afternoon, and a warm
welcome to those travelling here
from Portsmouth this afternoon.
All six previous battles here have
been hotly-contested, and settled
by either a single goal, or resulting
in a draw.
When Pompey won the FA Cup as a
Premier League side in 2008, it was
unthinkable that they’d be travelling
to Wycombe for a League 2 fixture
less than six years later, and their
ascent back up the leagues has been
slower than they’d have wished,
currently playing third-tier football
for the sixth consecutive season.
However, they’ve been in the
promotion shake-up almost
permanently in that time, and would
have been the Chairboys’ opponents
at Wembley in the 2020 play-off final
had fortune fallen in their favour in
the semi-final against Oxford.
Ipswich, but 31 points from 16 games
is a commendable effort as we edge
towards the halfway mark of the
season, and they could gain ground
on the leaders with a win today while
12 clubs are out of action.
Today’s game could’ve been
postponed due to the absences
of Daryl Horgan, Sullay Kaikai and
Tjay De Barr on international duty,
but Gareth Ainsworth and his staff
opted to play the game – against a
Portsmouth side missing two key
players for the same reason – and
hopes that decision will be fully
justified by 5pm.
Next Saturday’s edition of BluePrint
will actually be our last; as a club we
are committed to moving further
into the digital world and have
some exciting plans to deliver our
best-ever digital experience to our
supporters, while continuing our
journey towards having a paperless
stadium, playing our part in the
global sustainability efforts.
That’s not to say that we won’t
at times produce special editions
for prestigious occasions, but the
match-by-match programmes will
be placed into retirement.
Thank you for buying and
reading Issue No.11 this afternoon,
and let’s hope the Chairboys can
return to winning ways at the
start of a triple-header of action at
Adams Park this week.
THE CHAIRBOYS
A LOOK AHEAD TO THE NEXT 90 MINUTES
A SEE-SAW SCHEDULE OF LEAGUE AND CUP FIXTURES BRINGS ABOUT A LEAGUE 1
ENCOUNTER THAT LOOKED UNLIKELY TO GO AHEAD DUE TO INTERNATIONAL CALL-
UPS, BUT THE OPPORTUNITY TO PUT POINTS ON THE BOARD WHILE OTHER CLUBS
REST UP AT HOME IS ONE THAT BOTH MANAGERS WILL BE EAGER TO GRAB.
Wycombe fell short last time
out at Adams Park, losing their
perfect home record in an
unwanted emphatic fashion as
Ipswich Town left South Bucks
with all three points – the first
away club to do so since Luton
in April.
The 11-day break between
league games caused a couple
of headaches, too, with a
much-changed side – enforced
by illness and injury – held to a
draw at Hartlepool on Saturday,
requiring a replay at Adams Park
on Tuesday night.
The final game of the Papa John’s
group stage saw Wanderers
take on Burton, with both sides
already out of the competition,
and the Brewers’ decision to field
several first-team regulars in a
bid to secure a morale-boosting
victory paid off, as they scored
five times without reply after
the break to condemn a young
Chairboys side to defeat.
So the last fortnight has brought
about a fluctuation in form
compared to this time a month
ago, when the Blues were
formidable at home and steady
on the road, collecting three
successive clean sheets.
But today’s visitors are equally
unpredictable, demonstrating
promotion-winning credentials
with triumphs over Sunderland
and Bolton in recent times, but
also suffering heavy defeats to
Rotherham and Ipswich.
Cups have been a welcome
distraction for Danny Cowley who
lost on his last visit to Adams
Park with Lincoln in his final game
before departing for Huddersfield
in September 2019. They
overcame Harrow in the FA Cup
last weekend, and Crystal Palace
U21s in midweek, to restore that
winning habit and stretch their
unbeaten run in all competitions
to five.
Having taken 10 points from the
first four games of the season,
they’ll feel underwhelmed at
their 14th-place standing after 16
games, but the seven-point gap
to the play-offs can be quickly
bridged, while Wycombe know a
win today would put them level
on points with current leaders
Wigan.
HEAD TO HEAD
Wanderers won 1-0 in the last
encounter with Pompey at Adams
Park, when Adebayo Akinfenwa’s
late penalty separated the sides
on a boiling hot day in September
2019. Pompey won the reverse
fixture 2-0 on Boxing Day.
Portsmouth are just ahead in the
head-to-head rankings, claiming
five wins to Wanderers’ four,
with four draws. It’s all square at
Adams Park, though, with two
wins apiece, and two draws.
THE CHAIRBOYs
CONNECTIONS
David Wheeler is a former
Pompey man, playing 18 times on
loan in the 2018/19 season. Other
players to have represented both
clubs are Ryan Allsop, Marcus
Bean, Paris Cowan-Hall, Steve
Claridge, Guy Whittingham,
Marlon Pack, John Akinde, Andy
Turner, Paul Hardyman, Bryn
Morris, Andy Thomson, Gary Silk
and Mike Williamson, while Tony
Adams, Gary Waddock and John
Gregory have managed both
clubs.
MAN IN THE MIDDLE
Tom Nield has taken charge of
four Wycombe games previously,
the most recent being the 3-1
win over Bristol Rovers at Adams
Park in February 2020. He also
oversaw the 2-0 victory against
Bolton that season, a 3-2 defeat
at home to Southend, and 2-1
triumph against Yeovil.
So far this term he’s dished out 63
yellow cards and just one red in
his 14 games this season.
AROUND THE DIVISION
With six games called off due to
the international weekend, there
are 12 teams in action today.
Second-placed Plymouth
face a tricky trip to take on an
inconsistent Accrington, while
Burton – conquerors of Wycombe
in midweek – meet a Charlton
side who’ve found their feet
under caretaker boss Johnnie
Jackson.
Ipswich and Oxford go head to
head at Portman Road, while MK
Dons could move into the top six
if they overcome Cambridge.
Sheffield Wednesday have
threaded together a strong
unbeaten run and are just
behind MK in eighth, and will be
favourites to see off Gillingham at
Hillsborough.
the 4-3 win over Morecambe and netting a matchwinning
brace against Crewe, as well as playing his
part in clean sheets against Gillingham, Doncaster
and Rotherham.
Gareth Ainsworth was shortlisted for the Sky Bet
League 1 Manager of the Month award for October.
The Chairboys chief guided his side to 14 points from
a possible 18 in an unbeaten month, which included
three home wins as well as a victory on the road at
Doncaster, and draws at Rotherham and Fleetwood.
He was up against Plymouth boss Ryan Lowe,
Oxford manager Karl Robinson, and Paul Warne of
Rotherham, with Lowe winning the panel’s vote.
REST IN PEACE, REG
The thoughts of everyone at Wycombe Wanderers are
with the friends and family of Reg Turner, who passed
away after attending the fixture against Ipswich Town
at Adams Park last week.
Reg, 89, was a season ticket holder for many years,
and had been a Chairboys supporter going back to
the days when the Wanderers played at Loakes Park.
He passed away suddenly on Tuesday night after
spending the evening doing what he loved - watching
his team Wycombe Wanderers play.
Rest in peace, Reg.
THE CHAIRBOYS
The Wanderers welcome back
former players every week to
Adams Park. John D Taylor keeps
us up-to-date with all Wycombe
Ex-Players Association news.
Pompey memory rings
Bayo bell
It was five years ago when
Wycombe beat Portsmouth to
start to a memorable FA Cup run
only ended in the fourth round
after a thriller at Tottenham. Just
five members of that Wanderers
side which won 2-1 at Fratton Park
are still at Adams Park today – Joe
Jacobson, Dom Gape, Anthony
Stewart and Adebayo Akinfenwa
plus player-coach Matt Bloomfield.
Paris Cowan-Hall gave us the lead
midway through the first half.
Gareth Evans equalised for Pompey
early in the second half, before
Bayo scored with a looping header
with six minutes left to seal victory.
The Blues’ line-up that day was:
Blackman; Harriman, Stewart,
Pierre, Jacobson; Gape, O’Nien,
Bloomfield; Cowan-Hall (Weston),
Hayes (Gary Thompson),
Akinfenwa (Bean).
Dennis Edwards links
both sides
Those with longer memories will
remember another link between
Wycombe and Portsmouth
through big striker Dennis
Edwards who played for both
sides. One of our few England
amateur internationals, he made
an incredible impression during
just two seasons at Loakes
Park, scoring 31 goals in only 28
appearances between 1957-59 as
Sid Cann’s side finished second
then third in the Isthmian League.
He scored 12 times in the opening
seven games of the 1958-59
season, including four in the 8-1
thrashing of Corinthian Casuals.
This led to his England call-up
and he won two caps before
turning professional with Charlton
Athletic. In six seasons with them
he made 171 appearances, scoring
61 times.
Those goals encouraged Pompey
manager George Smith to splash
a record £15,000 in January 1965
and Edwards made his debut in
front of a massive crowd away at
Southampton. Another milestone
was the final match of that season
when a 1-1 draw in club legend
Jimmy Dickinson’s last game saved
the club from relegation.
Although he scored ten times in
35 games the following season,
Dennis admitted injuries took
their toll. Despite scoring in two
memorable FA Cup ties against
Hull City – 33,107 witnessing a 2-2
draw at Fratton Park - he moved on
loan to Brentford before winding
up his career at Aldershot.
After retiring, he set up a frozen
food business and continued to
live near Portsmouth. He was
a keen golfer and a member of
Waterlooville club for over 45 years
before his death in September
2019 aged 82.
WWEPA ‘crocks’ on the
mend
Although former skipper Glyn
Creaser is still recovering at home
following his shocking cardiac
arrest last month, and Len Worley is
following suit after the unpleasant
surprise of his heart attack, it was
good to see other recent ‘crocks’
Peter Suddaby and Keith Samuels
at this week’s latest WWEPA
Committee meeting. Former player
and manager Suddaby has been out
of action since suffering a stroke
nearly two years ago but happily is
a bit more mobile thanks to a newly
adapted car.
Sammy meanwhile is car-less
after writing off his Range Rover
following a losing argument with
a traffic bollard. Obviously, his
meant he collided with the raised
kerb at the bottom of Hillbottom
Road.
Although it was a low speed
incident, Keith was badly shaken.
Blood from his mouth led to
the belief he was suffering from
internal bleeding but it turned
out to be a cut tongue. He also
suffered badly bruised ribs and - as
WWEPA colleague Glyn Creaser
can testify - that can be extremely
painful.
Taken by ambulance to hospital,
he had a series of tests including
an ECG but was cleared to be
taken home by son Kevin at 6am.
Shaken but not stirred, he fared
better than his car.
Our 79-year-old WWEPA
committee member thanks
everyone who has called and left
messages and hopes to be back on
the golf course and in his normal
seat at Adams Park shortly.
Sammy, as he’s affectionately
known, was a regular for the Blues
between 1963-70 and is 15th on
the club’s all-time scoring charts
with 115 goals in 247 appearances.
A founder member of the Ex-
Players Association, he’s a regular
– and vocal – attendee at all the
Wanderers games.
PS: A teetotaller, Keith took the
mandatory breath test and passed
with flying colours!!!
Sounds of The Blues
Ex-players continue to line up for
appearances on the Wycombe
Sounds Thursday night show - the
whole hour from 7pm devoted
entirely to the Wanderers past
and present. Tim Langford, one of
Martin O’Neill’s heroes between
1992-95, was this week’s guest.
Teammates Steve Thompson,
Mickey Nuttell and Paul Hyde were
recent interviewees. Others this
season included Sean Devine and
Dave McCracken from the 2000s
with Colin Bunting, Mike Brown
and Les Merrick representing the
60s. We’ve also had a slightly
different view of times at the club
from former groundsman Rod
Lavers and ex-Bucks Free Press
Blues’ reporter Stuart Earp.
Some good listening there. This
show includes regular interviews
with ex-players from the 1950s
right through to today’s stars.
Sad farewells
Two sad losses for WWEPA over
recent weeks. The thoughts of all
connected with the club are with
former Reserve team manager Tim
Anning and family after the death
of wife Debbie. Aged 66, she had
been battling cancer for the past
two years but died peacefully at
their Chinnor home. The funeral
took place yesterday.
Arrangements still to be confirmed
after the death of Billy Gallacher at
the age of 76. Earlier in the year he
had returned home after spending
six weeks in hospital with Covid
which delayed a heart pacemaker
insertion. But he still turned up
regularly with grandson Oscar to
watch his beloved Blues including
a last visit to Adams Park for the
victory over Gillingham on October 9.
Living next to the old ground
in Suffield Road, he graduated
from being ball-boy at Loakes
Park in the 1950s to playing. He
became close friends with all
the FA Amateur Cup Final side
especially Paul Bates, then actually
donned a Blues’ senior shirt twice
himself in 1963 after an excellent
schoolboy career with East End
Utd and Hazlemere. But many
more than football followers will
recall his fantastic money-raising
feats – nearly £50,000 donated
to Scannappeal – with his Elvis
Presley silver-suited renditions
at clubs and pubs including a
couple of appearances on stage
at WWEPA events. Our thoughts
are with Christine, sons Andrew
and Paul, daughter Jackie and his
seven grandchildren.
pompey
THE OPPOSITION
portsmouth
Nickname: pompey – Manager: danny cowley – Stadium: fratton park – Founded: 1898
Problems in front of goal and
lack of consistency have so far
resulted in a below-par start to
the season for Portsmouth, who
have struggled to build on last
season’s play-off push, and travel
to Adams Park this weekend with
an indifferent run of form.
A team who have been trying to
knock on the Championship trap
door for the past four seasons,
Pompey have been a play-off
regular since their return to League
One in the 2016/17 campaign after
a lengthy stint in the lower depths
of the Football League.
Danny Cowley’s side in 2021 boast
a fruitful and talented squad that
produced a 4-0 thrashing over
Sunderland at the beginning of
October, but in the same breath,
a high squad turnover might
be considered to have stunted
progression quite significantly,
as seen in 4-1 and 4-0 defeats to
Rotherham and Ipswich respectively.
As a result they sit 14th in League
One with 20 points; the same
amount as division newcomers
Cheltenham Town, which
highlights Pompey’s need to
rally together and start stringing
together results in the run up to a
busy Christmas period.
In seasons gone by, the
Hampshire-based outfit have
had notable targetmen to rely
upon, with the likes of Jamal
Lowe and Brett Pitman key in their
pursuits of trying to return to the
Championship. The goals have
dried up this term, though John
Marquis has a prolific pedigree
and will be eager to build on his
four goals in 18 outings so far, and
loanee signings Gassan Ahadme
and George Hirst are yet to score.
Their defence has also been an issue
of late, having not conceded in any
of their first four league games.
Since then, they’ve only kept two
clean sheets in the league – both
at home – but on the flip side, their
last four games in all competitions
(all at Fratton Park) have seen them
ship just one goal, demonstrating
some improvement from a run of
conceding 10 times in three games.
Despite Pompey’s difficult start,
there should be no glancing over
the quality they possess, and the
Chairboys should be wary they could
kick into gear in HP12, as was the
case when Ipswich travelled and
took away a 4-1 victory last Tuesday.
Manager: Danny Cowley
In March of this year, Cowley was
brought to Fratton Park to replace
the outgoing Kenny Jackett after a
run of one win in seven games.
Cowley had a run in non-league as
a player before his career ended
in 2007 due to injury. Plying his
trade as a midfielder, the 43-yearold
featured for Boreham Wood,
Hornchurch, Brentwood Town
and Concord Rangers, with the
latter the start of his venture into
management.
He spent seven years in charge
of the Essex-based club, followed
by a brief spell at Braintree before
landing himself in charge of Lincoln
City in 2016, who he returned to
the Football League via a title win,
along with a run to the quarterfinals
of the FA Cup, a stage in the
competition no other non-league
side had managed to reach in over
a century.
In 2019 he left the Imps and set
up post at Huddersfield Town,
where another dismissal came a
year later. His brother Nicky has
been his assistant since their days
at Concord, and continue to work
together at Portsmouth.
pompey
opposition view
Ahead of today’s League One clash, we spoke
to Sam Stone from PO4CAST about what the
Chairboys can expect.
Pompey currently sit 14th in
the League One table, with two
losses, two draws and a win from
their last five games. Can you
talk us through some of those
most recent results?
Five matches ago Pompey
demolished league leaders at
the time Sunderland 4-0 at
Fratton Park. This was Pompey’s
first win since August and felt,
to many, like a turning point in
our stop-start season. Pompey
deserved the three points after
an electric first-half display. This
was somewhat continued into
the next fixture at Rotherham
United. Despite being 1-0 down
at half-time, Danny Cowley’s side
looked more than a match for Paul
Warne’s serial League One ‘escape
artists’. After Marcus Harness had
equalised for Pompey, the three
points appeared there for the
taking. What followed, yet again,
plunged Pompey’s campaign
back into disarray. Three goals
in seven minutes from the hosts
exposed the soft underbelly of
this Portsmouth team that was,
yet again, laid bare in the following
home fixture against Ipswich Town.
Paul Cook’s side running out 4-0
winners in what has been labelled
by some as the worst performance
ever seen at Fratton Park by a
Pompey side. The reaction at
Accrington was positive, but again
frustrating as Pompey had to settle
for a draw, despite dominating
throughout; conceding soft goals,
yet again, stifling Cowley’s side.
Since then, an unconvincing 1-0
win against a free-falling Bolton
and a timid 1-1 draw at home to
Cheltenham Town have hardly
ignited much optimism.
You seem to be struggling with
injuries at the moment - how do
you think that’s been affecting
recent results?
Danny Cowley has been
unfortunate with injuries. Centrehalf
and captain Clarke Robertson
started his Pompey career with
three clean sheets and was rock
solid alongside Sean Raggett.
The fixture against MK Dons
saw Robertson pick up an injury
which won’t see him return until
next month. Consequently, the
next four fixtures saw Pompey
adapt to a makeshift 3-4-3 and
concede eight goals, highlighting
the importance of Robertson
to the side. Other notable
absences include an injured Ellis
Harrison; this has resulted in no
competition for John Marquis
up-front and some sub-par
performances from the onceprolific
frontman.
Considering those injuries, who
will be the key players in the mix
to take on the Chairboys?
Pompey will be without standout
performers Irish international
Gavin Bazunu and accomplished
midfielder Joe Morrell for this
weekend’s clash. The absence
of Morrell will guarantee a start
for Louis Thompson in midfield.
Thompson’s performances have
been a positive after being eased
into action after a career plagued
by injuries. The former Norwich
man has already shown, from his
minimal game time, that he has
the quality, pace, and physicality
to perform at a higher level. In a
season of sub-par performances,
Marcus Harness’ recent scoring
exploits also make him a player to
keep an eye on.
Danny Cowley has also hinted
that youngsters Harry Jewitt-
White, Harvey Hughes and Izzy
Kaba have been in and around
first team training. Do you think
they’d be good additions for
Saturday’s travelling squad?
Injuries to Robertson, Harrison
and rumours of further injuries
picked up over the week, mean
they simply have to be training
with the squad. None of these
youngsters have been near
starting in League fixtures, with
the Papa John’s Trophy the only
stage to show their worth. The
lack of an effective reserve or
under-23 side has hindered
numerous academy graduates
at Pompey and is something
that needs to be resolved. In
the case of Jewitt-White, there
have been rumours of clubs
further up the pyramid looking
at the midfielder. It wouldn’t be a
surprise to see the 17-year-old on
the bench Saturday to make up
the numbers.
Finally, what’s your score
prediction?
It will be a battle. Pompey have
struggled to put together any
sort of attacking fluency in recent
weeks and Wycombe like to fight
to the very end. Pompey will
need to show some grit if they
want to gain anything at Adam’s
Park. I don’t think this will be
one for the footballing purist.
An early Pompey goal wouldn’t
be a surprise, but it’s a question
of whether they can stand firm
amidst the eventual Wycombe
onslaught that will follow. 1-1
would be my prediction and an
excellent result for Pompey.
COMMERCIAL BREAK
Commercial manager Harry Gadd provides an update
Welcome back to Adams Park on what promises to
be another bustling afternoon at Adams Park.
Last Tuesday’s match against Ipswich drew in 6,943
fans under the lights of Adams Park, with only six spots
remaining in The Whites Beaconsfield Terrace. To see
fans from the surrounding areas of High Wycombe
coming to cheer us on was fantastic and we are
continually looking to grow our connection with local
residents and get them along to watch the Chairboys.
A big thanks to SHUFL Capital who supported the
game as match sponsor and well done to Brandon
Hanlan who was chosen by SHUFL Founder, Simon
Webster, as the game’s man of the match, presenting
him with a bottle of champagne in the Ignite Tunnel
Club after the game.
For today’s game we welcome 3B Hire, local car and
van hire company and the club’s Official Automobile
Partner. 3B Hire are the region’s largest independent
vehicle rental company and fans may have seen their
branding across our Twitter page, via their away
day quiz or on the back of the club’s fleet of vehicles
provided to us by the family run business. We’re
pleased to welcome Ross Batting and his guests for
today’s game and we thank them for their support of
the club.
Elsewhere in commercial news, we’re delighted to
welcome a new addition to our growing portfolio of
partners. Troo are an energy broker from the northeast
of England and have recently implemented
new energy suppliers at the ever-expanding training
ground. They have sourced competitive prices from
several energy suppliers and will provide business
energy management through their Troo Assure
service. Their branding will appear across the back
of the away stand as well as across a variety of
the club’s social media channels. We look forward
to meeting their team as match sponsors for the
Sunderland game and to seeing the partnership grow
over the coming years.
With Christmas right around the corner (and
temperatures getting lower and lower!), there’s no
better time than now to treat the family to some
winter hospitality. We will have a Christmas menu
on offer for our game against AFC Wimbledon on
December 11th and a traditional Boxing Day feast
on the December 26th, so why not bring along the
family to enjoy the game in style. Please contact
commercial@wwfc.com for more information and to
get booked in – spaces are filling up!
If you would like to join us and experience all that
Wycombe Wanderers has to offer, please get in
touch at commercial@wwfc.com. Whether it be
programme advertising, LED minutes or corporate
hospitality and match sponsorships, we have
opportunities for companies of all sizes, so please
get in touch to discuss how we can add value to your
business.
Match Report: Caversham 0 -
5 WWFC U18’s
Wycombe Wanderers restarted
their league campaign after a
2 week break with a bang to
celebrate fireworks weekend!
The game had everything;
penalties at each end, an own
goal, near misses and spectacular
shots.
Wycombe arrived at Clayfield
Copse wearing their brand-new
kits with pride. The game started
brightly with plenty of attacking
play and it wasn’t long before Jess
Fuller put the Chairgirls ahead,
1:0. Caversham were not to be
underestimated and fought back
strongly and before long won a
penalty. Sophie Carter showed no
fear in goal, she stood firm and
calm to make the save sending
the ball over the bar for a corner.
Caversham were denied.
Wycombe regathered, fired up
again and pressed forward. Naomi
Tilley was working her magic
down the left-hand side but was
chopped down just inside the box
with a clumsy challenge. Ruby
Paish stepped up to take the
penalty and there was never any
doubt that she would put it away,
2:0 to Wycombe at half time.
The second half started with
Wycombe hungry for more
THE CHAIRGIRLS SAW THE U18S BACK IN ACTION
AFTER A TWO WEEK BREAK WITH A 5-0 VICTORY OVER
CAVERSHAM. THE RESERVES OVERCAME AYLESBURY
UNITED WITH A CLEAN SHEET AND A MEGA 8 GOALS
BEING SCORED.
goals. A well struck corner from
Chloe Mackay put the Caversham
defence under pressure
unfortunately for them turning
the ball into their own net. 3-0
Wycombe.
Caversham worked hard in defence
with some strong tackling, but
Wycombe were passing beautifully
making runs down both sides and
displaying versatility amongst
the players, whereby a number
featured in several positions. A
well worked move down the righthand
side between Lenis Cook
and Jess Fuller saw the goal of the
game. Lenis struck a powerful right
footed shot on the edge of the box
leaving the keeper stranded as it
looped over her, 4:0 Wycombe.
Molly Carter, always with a keen
eye for goal capitalised on a tired
Caversham scoring the fifth and
final goal. Another great team
performance from each and every
player.
Women’s Football Weekend
This weekend is Women’s Football
Weekend. This weekend, our
teams are playing away with the
first team playing at Oxford City
and the reserves take a trip to
Eversley.
Our teams have regular home
games with the firsts playing
at Buckinghamshire College,
Flackwell Heath and our Reserves
& U18s playing at Lane End Playing
Fields.
With last season behind closed
doors for many months, any
support for the Chairgirls is hugely
appreciated by the staff & players
at Wycombe Wanderers.
U18s sponsorship
Our U18s have another sponsor
on board for the season and so a
partnership has been formed with
Franchi Plc.
Franchi have a reputation in the
DIY industry with products and
services ranging from key cutting,
to tools & builders materials.
Owner Guerrino Franchi
established the business in 1970
and this year, celebrates 50 years
in the industry. The business is
family run with other members
also joining in on the venture.
THE CHAIRBOYS
Welcome back to Adams Park,
Chairboys fans, and a massive
Buckinghamshire welcome to
all the players, staff and fans
from Portsmouth Football Club.
And a special welcome to our
counterparts from ‘Portsmouth
in the Community’, Pompey’s
charity partner.
We’d like to say a massive thank
you to just over 500 of you who
came out for the midweek fixture
against Burton Albion. Among
them were our special guests,
Luker Rowe, chartered insurance
brokers with more than 30 years’
experience, who are based just
down the road in Amersham.
A massive thank you to Luker
Rowe President Chris Luker for
the continued support, and to
Marketing Consultant Cathy Sears
for helping organise the evening.
The result wasn’t ideal, though,
as Burton Albion ran out 5-0
winners on the night. A young
Chairboys side put up a good
fight for the majority of the
match but were eventually
overrun by a strong Burton side.
But, to make the best of this
result, we are going to look at five
fabulous things that are going on
here at the Wycombe Wanderers
Sports & Education Trust.
#1 Our Santa Fun Run
in Marlow!
We are pleased to announce that
members of our team will be
participating in the Marlow Santa’s
Fun Run to raise funds for our
charity. Not only that but we’ll also
be joined on the day by club mascot,
Bodger, who will lend his support by
pounding the streets with us!
The 5km run, organised by the
Rotary Club of Marlow and takes
place on Sunday 5th December
2021, and is aiming to raise over
£60,000 for local charities via the
participant entrant fees as well as
the sponsorships that each of the
runners will try to raise for their
chosen charity.
Like the vast majority of charities,
WWSET’s finances were adversely
affected by Covid-19 meaning
our fundraising efforts moving
forward have to be prioritised,
especially considering that local
need has also grown during the
pandemic and there’s now more
local people requiring support
than there was pre-pandemic. If
you are in a position to donate
to our fundraising appeal, nomatter
how much or how little,
come across to our social media
channels where we have pinned a
link to donate.
#2 Our Half Term Camps
After a week of fun-filled football
delivery, our October soccer
schools, based at Cressex
Community School in High
Wycombe and The Beaconsfield
School over in Beaconsfield,
came to an end on Friday 29th
October. The sessions were
delivered by our fantastic Sports
Participation coaching team
and saw 81 unique participants
visit us over the course of the
week, which resulted in 2,025
hours of football activity being
undertaken.
Apart from a brief spell of
torrential rain on the last day,
we were largely unaffected by
any bad weather and were able
to enjoy ourselves out on the
football pitches. Our October
Soccer Schools were booked
with the added back up of having
indoor space to utilise in the
event of bad weather but, with
the week being fairly dry, we were
able to maximise our time out on
the grass!
Activity Programme Manager,
Andy Homent said, “we enjoyed
a massively successful week over
THE CHAIRBOYs
both venues with even more new
faces coming to visit us for the
first time! We were delighted to
welcome them all and they had a
fantastic time!“ And we’re doing
it all again over Christmas, with
places going fast. We are SOLD
OUT for Cressex, but there are
a handful of places still available
at our Beaconsfield camp, so
move quickly if you want to join
us. Details on how to sign up are
on our website. We did see the
return of our highly successful
Saturday Morning club last week
too, and details of how to join are
on our website too.
#3 The launch of our
Equality Action Plan.
Our Equality Action Plan
was created by the WWSET
EqualiTeam which was formed in
March 2021 when we recognised
that we needed to be more
proactive in demonstrating
our commitment to Equality,
Diversity & Inclusion (ED&I)
throughout the charity.
WWSET is committed to creating
a culture that has equality,
diversity and inclusion at its core.
We celebrate and value people’s
differences and will always strive
to learn and develop when it
comes to ED&I matters. By doing
this we hope to continually ignite
understanding, opportunities,
respect, empowerment and
allyship within our work place
and wider community.
#4 We are expanding
our team!
We are on the lookout for
two enthusiastic and creative
young people, who will be aged
between 18 and 24, to fill the
roles of ‘Community Health
& Wellbeing Activator’ and
‘Education Support Officer’.
Both positions offer paid
employment and an opportunity
to pick up valuable, transferable
skills and experience. Your
personal development will
be supported through your
time with us via additional
training and mentoring as well
as supporting your eventual
pathway into further employment
or education post-placement.
More information on both
opportunities as well as details
on how to apply can be found on
the WWSET website under the
‘Vacancies’ tab.
#5 We were joined by the
Mayor at our Walking
Football session.
We were delighted to be joined
at our walking football session
last week by the Mayor of High
Wycombe, Andrea Baughan, as
we moved the sessions from
outside in the cold at Lane End
Playing Fields to our warm, inside
pitch at Wycombe Leisure Centre.
Head of Health, Simon Wears,
joined Colin Bezley live on the
multi-award winning Wycombe
Sound during the session to talk
about it.
Walking football offers a
multitude of health benefits to
older people such as reducing the
risk of cardiovascular disease and
stroke, whilst helping to improve
blood pressure. Walking football
also gives an often isolated
section of the community the
chance to become involved in
something they really enjoy and
make new friends.
There’s a lot going on as always
here at WWSET, and we’d love
you to be involved! Whether
it’s joining us for one of our
upcoming sessions (there are
a couple of announcements
coming up on this), taking part in
one of our upcoming fundraising
events, or simply supporting us
by liking and sharing our social
media channels, we’d love to hear
from you. Our inbox is always
open at community@wwfc.com.
Finally, we are delighted to
launch our ‘Pre-Apprenticeship in
Football Coaching’ programme
today, where we are working
with Bucks Council and their
Virtual Schools department. The
course will offer young people
the chance to learn about the insand-outs
of football to help them
aspire to work in the industry
when they are old enough to
qualify for an apprenticeship.
Areas covered include coaching
and media work, as well as the
broader principles of teamwork,
planning and organisation. There
will be more to follow on this as
it gets underway, but we’d like
to thank you Maria Seth from
Buckinghamshire Council for
working with us on this incredible
project.
We hope you enjoy the game
today, let’s get back to winning
ways and grab another three vital
points. Adams Park was rocking in
the last league game here against
Ipswich so sing your support loud
for the boys! Come on you Blues!
NEWS FROM WYCOMBE WANDERERS TRUST
Thanks to all our members
as we exit renewals season,
and fast approach our Annual
General Meeting.
I’m excited to share some more
details of the AGM including the
profiles of those standing to be
Trust Directors. You will be able
to join us in person at Adams
Park, and by Zoom for those who
this suits better.
Date:
Thursday, 18th November 2021
Time:
Meeting commences 7pm, but
please arrive earlier (see below)
Location:
In person the Caledonian Suite,
Adams Park from 6:30pm
Virtually: To pre-registered
members via Zoom from 6:45pm
We would really appreciate our
members’ participation in this
year’s Trust AGM; in the past
two years we have seen highs
and lows (but mainly highs) on
the pitch, and we have seen the
role of the Trust transform from
running the club, to helping to
represent the voice of the fans
and supporting our valuable 25%
share of the club and ownership
of Adams Park. Hearing directly
from fans week in week out at
matches and at the AGM really
helps us represent our members
more effectively.
In accordance with the Trust’s
Rules, one third of the current
Trust Board is required to retire.
Nigel Kingston, Peter Lerner, Bob
Massie, and Trevor Stroud are
therefore retiring from the Board.
All four are offering themselves for
re-election and Jon Workman is
seeking election for the first time.
To see the candidate election
addresses you can visit the
Trust website.
Voting in the Board Election
Each fully paid up member has
four votes in the election of
Board Directors, you can vote in
three different ways:
1. In person at the AGM - details
will be shared on the night
2. Via Zoom at the AGM - an
email will be sent at least 7 days
before the AGM allowing you
to pre-register. Each registered
member will be able to vote, so
if you live in a household with
more than one member you will
each need to register and join the
Zoom meeting.
3. By email in advance. You can
vote by emailing secretary@
wycombewandererstrust.com
subject line “Directors VOTE”.
Your email must be received by
midday on November 18th, 2021
and those emailing a vote in
advance will not be able to vote
again at the AGM.
We look forward to seeing you in
the Caledonian Suite, or on Zoom!
Join the Trust!
Wycombe Wanderers Trust
retains 25% ownership of
Wycombe Wanderers Football
Club and is the sole owner of
Adams Park. We continue to
provide 2 of the 5 Board Directors
at the club, and have a good
working relationship with all key
members of staff at Adams Park.
Having sold a controlling stake
of the club in 2021, our most
important role is now to represent
the views of supporters and ensure
that fans will continue to have a
say in the way the Club is run.
That is why we are urging
everyone to join, and encourage
friends and family to join too.
We’ve made a few changes to the
Trust membership scheme this
year, which improves benefits
for members and will we hope,
attract more younger members
to the Trust.
Prices have been frozen, or in
some cases reduced, and as ever
you can pay monthly or annually,
to help ‘support the quarter’.
Thank you for your continued
support for the Trust…
and the Blues!
