Program Overview<br />

The program will encompass a number <strong>of</strong> high quality<br />

keynote sessions and high quality symposia. O<strong>th</strong>er sessions<br />

<strong>th</strong>ere were <strong>th</strong>ree-hundred arrow slits and enormous parapets<br />

all round. In <strong>th</strong>e following centuries, it suffered devastation and<br />

neglect; recently, <strong>th</strong>e western walls <strong>of</strong> <strong>th</strong>e fortress came into<br />

full view. Restoration work has been done, and <strong>th</strong>e citadel is<br />

now a center for various cultural activities. Its most celebrated<br />

annual event is <strong>th</strong>e Damascus Jazz Festival which will start<br />

<strong>th</strong>is year on 23 August 2008. There will be a chance for all <strong>of</strong><br />

us to be <strong>th</strong>ere. The Syrian Army Band was established<br />

during <strong>th</strong>e Ottoman era as <strong>th</strong>ey were <strong>th</strong>e first to form bands as<br />

part <strong>of</strong> <strong>th</strong>e army and <strong>th</strong>ey exported <strong>th</strong>is idea to <strong>th</strong>e rest <strong>of</strong> <strong>th</strong>e<br />

world. After Syria’s independence in 1946 <strong>th</strong>e band was<br />

directed until his dea<strong>th</strong> by a Syrian military <strong>of</strong>ficer, Helmi<br />

<strong>Arab</strong>alli who had graduated from <strong>th</strong>e military academy in<br />

France as lieutenant specializing in music. The present<br />

organizational form as an independent unit wi<strong>th</strong>in <strong>th</strong>e military<br />

hierarchy was instituted in 1960 during <strong>th</strong>e union wi<strong>th</strong> Egypt.<br />

The Band has recorded many folk musical pieces and military<br />

marches since 1965. It took part in <strong>th</strong>e Bremen Musical<br />

Festival in Germany in 1999. The Band is presently working<br />

on a “Music on <strong>th</strong>e Road” project to present musical<br />

performances in public gardens in cooperation <strong>th</strong>e Committee<br />

<strong>of</strong> Damascus Capital <strong>of</strong> <strong>Arab</strong> Culture for 2008.<br />
