Choosing the right
Sixth Form
We ask Mrs Xavière Harvey, Head of Sixth Form & Careers
and Head of Languages at Bruton School for Girls...
ADVERTISING FEATURE
What makes your curriculum at BSG so unique?
Our Sixth Form curriculum is both traditional and innovative.
We equip girls with the advanced knowledge that derives
from their academic interests and - perhaps more
importantly - the skills they will need for further study or
the world of work. Whilst they may be able to develop their
understanding of the finer points of Chemistry, History or
German in their lessons, it is through the experience of all
the valuable extras we offer that they will develop crucial
skills such as independence, creativity, self-reliance or team
work, to name a few. This will allow them to apply their
knowledge in any new context. Extra qualifications, such as
the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) or the Advanced
Certificate in Spoken English (ESB), marry knowledge and
skills to excellent effect and give our girls a head start for
undergraduate study. Whilst these are popular for our more
academic pupils, we develop a range of other skills through
our more practical courses such as the Leiths Certificate
in Food & Wine, or the Diploma in Childcare & Education,
which offer a wealth of useful life skills as well as a ready
qualification to undertake a successful gap year or start a
career after Sixth Form. Ultimately, our offer is bespoke so
girls are able to choose anything they like out of our broad
curriculum.
How would you like each pupil to look back on their time at BSG?
With enormous affection and a sense of unquestionable belonging.
BSG is a hugely special place; I challenge anyone to set foot here
and not feel the unique vibe of the school. It is an indescribable
mix of warmth, creativity and ambition, with core human values
that equip pupils with individuality of thought, empathy and
undeniable humanity. This creates a sense of community that is
hard to leave behind. I genuinely believe that friendships formed
here are for life.
How do you think you achieve such outstanding A Level results?
We set out to be excellent in all we do - and it works! The staff
at the school are hugely dedicated as well as being talented
individuals in their own right. It is this level of care and attention
to detail with every individual which means that our pupils
achieve the very best results that they can in their chosen
fields. We are committed to developing all girls, regardless of
background or ability, to be the very best version of themselves,
both personally and academically; the two go hand in hand. What
allows this is our tailored pastoral support and mentoring each of
our pupils so they develop and find fulfilment in their chosen field.
Outstanding results follow on from that.
