HEAD COACH
ian
burchnall
Good evening all and welcome back to Meadow Lane for the latest in a
very difficult run of fixtures.
t’s great to be back on home turf
following two back-to-back away games
I in which we produced contrasting
performances.
I was really disappointed with our display at
Eastleigh, where we failed to match our usual
intensity and produced a lot of technical
errors, but I was far happier with what I saw
at Boreham Wood on Tuesday night.
Of course we weren’t satisfied with a
point having got ourselves into a winning
position with an excellent Ruben Rodrigues
header and a largely dominant display, but
Boreham Wood have proven themselves
to be formidable opponents this season –
especially at home, where they are yet to be
beaten.
I’m still very confused by the referee’s
decision not to award the clear handball in
the build-up to Boreham Wood’s equaliser
but these things happen in football and the
lads know they need to react better in those
situations.
The game seemed to open up from that
moment, with both sides having promising
attacks but failing to create any clear-cut
chances. In the end, a draw was probably
about fair and it gives us a decent platform
to build from tonight.
Dagenham had a brilliant start to the season
and, although they have suffered a bit of a
dip in form in recent weeks, they will provide
a big challenge this evening.
But, as always, with our home support
behind us I have every confidence the boys
will deliver a strong performance with a
result to match.
Thank you for your support.
Ian
and redbridge
Dagenham & Redbridge
arrive at Meadow Lane
three points and four
places behind us after losing their
midweek home game against
Eastleigh, who beat us 2-0 last
Saturday.
Daggers started the season on
fire but have since suffered from
inconsistency.
They kicked off the campaign with
five wins and a draw, a blistering start
which only ended when they were
beaten 1-0 at Wrexham.
Since then they have failed to
recapture their early-season form,
leading to manager Daryl McMahon
saying after Saturday’s single-goal
defeat at home to Yeovil: “We have
lost five games this season 1-0 and a lot
of the goals we have conceded have
come from set pieces. We have to find
a way to draw.”
To add to their woes they had
defender Elliott Johnson sent off for
a foul before half-time and he serves
the second of a three-match ban this
evening.
Things did not improve for McMahon
and his players on Tuesday, when
Daniel Whitehall’s second-half goal for
Eastleigh consigned Dagenham to a
second successive 1-0 home defeat in
the league.
Commenting further after the Yeovil
defeat, McMahon said: “The first half
was very scrappy but I thought we
were outstanding in the second half
and showed real courage and spirit,
which is what we expect to see from
our team.
“With 10 against 11 it was an uphill task
but we created some good chances,
we just didn’t take them.”
Daggers have been exciting to watch
going forward this season and in
Angelo Balanta (pictured), who scored
the club’s first hat-trick since 2018 in
the recent game against Maidenhead,
they have a dangerous striker, ably
assisted by Ibrahim Akanbi, who had a
hand in all Balanta’s goals in that match
and also scored his first for the club in
a 4-1 win, although he had to settle for
a place on the bench on Tuesday.
Hoping for a debut tonight will be
centre half Richard Taylor, who signed
for Daggers on Tuesday and was an
unused substitute against Eastleigh.
Taylor started off in the youth set
up at Premier League side Burnley,
before making the switch to Southend
during their time in League One. The
defender then joined Barnet on a
short-term deal but has been training
with the Daggers over the last few
weeks and signed after impressing
McMahon.
Jake Kean departed the club last
week to join Burton Albion as
Head of Goalkeeping.
Kean joined us at the beginning
of the 2019-20 season and quickly
became a popular figure behind
the scenes at Meadow Lane.
And he says he will forever be
grateful to the club for giving him
his first coaching role after taking
a step back from playing.
“From minute one I’ve
thoroughly enjoyed my time here
– I wouldn’t change any of it for
the world and the club will always
mean a lot to me,” he said.
“The infrastructure of the club,
with the owners, the gaffer, the
staff, the players – it’s all set up
for success. Hopefully the fans
are enjoying the way we play
football and can see the benefits
of it.
“My son Rudy’s very first football
shirt is a Notts one. He loves
wearing it and my whole family
will miss coming to the ground
and seeing all the brilliant people
who work here. Hopefully one
day we will be back but, in the
meantime, I wish everyone all
the best and will be watching the
club’s progress closely.”
Jake’s replacement will be
announced in due course.

Supporters are invited to attend our popular
annual carol service at Meadow Lane on Monday
6 December.
This year we will be joined by the Nottingham
Salvation Army Band and the very willing singers at
St Michael’s Primary School!
It promises to be a lovely evening, complete with
mulled wine and mince pies, and we hope to see you
there. Doors open 7pm for a 7.30pm start.
To register your attendance for this free event,
please email alice.kelk@nottscountyfc.co.uk or
call Alice on 0115 955 7241.
Check our website after 1pm on Monday to
find out who we’ll face in the third round of
this season’s Buildbase FA Trophy, with ties
scheduled to take place over the weekend
of 17/18/19 December.
Second-round matches take place today
and Tamworth, who we faced twice in this
season’s FA Cup, could be on our radar once
again if they can win at Radcliffe FC.
Another trip to Morpeth might be on the
cards if they beat Warrington away, while
Whitby Town have a chance of progressing
at home to Nantwich.
More locally, Matlock Town (v Marske
United), Alfreton Town (v Leamington) and
Boston United (v Brackley Town) are also
potential third-round opponents.
Sunderland recalled Anthony Patterson from his loan
following an injury to one of their goalkeepers last week.
The 21-year-old produced a number of impressive
performances following his arrival as cover for the theninjured
Sam Slocombe, going on to extend his loan until 9
January.
But the Black Cats returned him to the Stadium of Light
early, putting him on the bench for their recent League
One fixtures against Ipswich and Shrewsbury.
Our head coach, Ian Burchnall, said: “As much as we
rate and value Sam, Anthony has added tremendous
competition to our goalkeeping department. We’re keen
to see him return and have had positive dialogue with
Sunderland to that effect.”
Tiernan Brooks, meanwhile, has returned from his loan at
Worksop Town and was named on our bench for Tuesday’s
trip to Boreham Wood.

A disappointing performance
was met with a 2-0 defeat in
Hampshire last weekend.
We failed to hit our usual high
standards on a frustrating
afternoon, with Tyrone Barnett
heading the hosts in front in
the first half and Andrew Boyce
doubling the lead with a scrappy
effort after the break.
Plenty of half chances passed us
by but we failed to create any
real clear-cut opportunities,
while Eastleigh’s Ben House
was thwarted by the returning
Sam Slocombe on a number of
A much-improved performance
was rewarded with only a draw
at second-placed Boreham
We went into the break ahead
after Ruben Rodrigues met Cal
Roberts’ whipped free-kick with
an excellent header.
After the interval we continued
to look the better side but were
left frustrated on 64 minutes
when the hosts appeared to
clearly handle the ball in the
build-up to Tyrone Marsh’s
equaliser.
The game evened out somewhat
after that with both sides
sensing an opportunity to claim
We edge the head-to-head stakes against the Daggers having
Against all the odds, we made it four
consecutive wins as Michael Doyle
led us to an incredible victory from
between the sticks.
The skipper took the gloves from
Sam Slocombe after our number-one
was red-carded for a lunge on an
opponent in his area.
It looked like we were in for a long
evening when Paul McCallum stepped
up to take the subsequent spot kick
in a bid to restore parity after Kyle
Wootton had given us an early lead.
But he failed to test Doyle as his
penalty hit the post and we went on
to score twice more thanks to brilliant
efforts from Wootton and Ruben
Rodrigues.
Matthew Robinson scored a
consolation in second-half stoppage
time but it did little to dampen the
spirits on a quite incredible evening.
EMIRATES FA CUP | MEADOW
Notts 1
(WHITE OG 63’)
Rochdale 2
(ANDREWS 15’, BEESLEY 90’)
We were knocked out of
the Emirates FA Cup by a
last-minute Jake Beesley
header despite another strong
performance against League
Two side Rochdale.
Having drawn at the Crown
Oil Arena, Robbie Stockdale’s
side arrived at Meadow Lane
for a replay which proved to
be as closely contested as the
initial tie.
It followed a similar pattern,
too, with Rochdale taking the
lead in the first half when Josh
Andrews produced an excellent
finish inside the area only for us
to equalise after the break with
Aaron Nemane forcing Aidy
White to turn Adam Chicksen’s
cross home at the back post.
We were largely dominant after
the break but it was Dale who
would strike next, Beesley rising
highest to meet a cross with a
pinpoint header with seconds of
normal time remaining.
STARTING XI: Patterson;
Chicksen, Rawlinson, Brindley;
Taylor, Nemane (Kelly-Evans
75’); Palmer, Rodrigues, Vincent
57’), Wootton
We are still too far away from
being able to write ‘Wembley
is on the horizon’ but the roads
are opening up a little more
each round for the Buildbase
FA Trophy and FA Vase. And as
we know in cup competitions,
anything can happen.
This weekend we have the second
round of the FA Trophy, before the
National League’s top tier enter next.
There are some intriguing ties –
Felixstowe & Walton United v AFC
Telford leaps off the page, as does
Plymouth Parkway welcoming
Hampton & Richmond, as well as past
winners Canvey Island v Tonbridge
Angels.
In the northern section, Marine travel
to Bradford PA, while a number of
Step 2 clubs are going head-to-head,
knocking each other out before
they’ve really got going.
In recent seasons, the FA Trophy
has felt wide open. But it still seems
remarkable looking back to last year’s
where Hornchurch lifted the silverware
at Wembley after beating Hereford.
It has to rank as one of the most
remarkable stories to cover since I’ve
worked at the paper.
Manager Mark Stimson, who knows
a thing or two about winning the
competition having completed a
unique hat-trick with Grays Athletic
(twice) and then Stevenage in
successive years. It added to his
triumph as a Canvey player.
Around these stages of that run, I’d
give Stimson a call for a piece in the
paper – cards on table, with the full
thought that we’d better get them in
quick before the run is over.
It’s fair to say our conversations
became more regular as they knocked
off higher opposition one after the
other!
Buildbase FA Vase 2020/21 Final, Binfield v Warrington Rylands,
Wembley Stadium, Saturday, 22 May 2021
It came the season after Step
2 Concord Rangers and Step 4
Halesowen Town and met in the semifinals,
with Concord going onto play
Harrogate Town in the final. Of course,
that day, Harrogate became the first
team to win the competition while in
the EFL. The competition had been
delayed because of Covid. Strange
times.
It meant their reign as winners lasted
barely a couple of weeks with the two
finals played so close together.
What made Hornchurch’s glory even
more unique was the fact the Urchins
weren’t even playing league football.
With their season shutdown, they were
afforded the luxury of being allowed
to train under the ‘elite sport’ Covid
guidance.
Perhaps the run took on even more
significance because of that. Speaking
to the players, there was a sense of
how grateful they were to still be
allowed to meet up and train while
the majority of non-league was in
lockdown.
Their second-half performance at
Wembley will live long in the memory,
as they came from behind to win 3-1.
Speaking to managers and players
this season, that success is providing
plenty of inspiration. Can they repeat
the remarkable achievement?
We look forward to watching it unfold.
As for Hornchurch, we know they
won’t be able to. Their defence is
already over at the hands of Wingate &
Finchley. That’s cup football!
official
supporters’
association
We’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone
who’s joined us this year, helping take our
membership numbers to record levels!
Don’t forget, members receive a badge, a £5
gift voucher for the club shop, £1 discount
on official away travel and early access to indemand
matches, so pop in to the OSA office
(next to the ticket office) on matchdays or join
online at ncfcosa.co.uk/membership.
Other OSA news
• Our vice-chairman Colin Hancock has
generously donated match balls to the
academy and we are also in the process
of ordering 50 training balls as part of our
ongoing support
• We’re giving members early notice of an
exciting OSA function. Make sure Friday 13
May 2022 is saved in your diary!
• We still have a few medium-sized diversity
tops in stock. You can get one in exchange
for a donation to our academy
• Patricia Akers would like to thank everyone
who has wished her well. The messages
have been hugely appreciated
• Don’t forget to grab your prize draw tickets
(£1) from our matchday volunteers. If you’re
able to sell any books to your colleagues
or family members, we’d be delighted to
supply you with one from our matchday
office
Book now
for Christmas
party!
Tickets for the Lifeline Christmas party, which will be
held in the 1862 Suite at Meadow Lane on Friday 17
December, are still on sale.
The event, which includes a three-course dinner and
a performance from swinging sixties tribute band
Revival, is sure to be a popular one so be sure to call
0115 955 7200 or email lifeline@nottscountyfc.co.uk
for more information and to book your place. All
tickets must be purchased by a Lifeline member but
you are welcome to bring guests.
Join the waiting list
Following a membership surge earlier in the Covid-19
pandemic, Lifeline is currently at its full capacity of
2,500 members. The waiting list is stacking up, too,
so call 0115 955 7200 or email lifeline@nottscountyfc.
co.uk to get in the queue!
