ONU Sports Center 

The ONU Sports Center was opened for use in the 

1974-75 academic year and was expanded to its current 

size of 18,000-square feet in 1991. 

The Ohio Northern swimming and diving teams 

are fortunate to have one of the top facilities in the 

Midwest to call home. 

The Sports Center Natatorium has a six-lane, 

25-yard pool with 1- and 3-meter diving boards and 

permanent seating for more than 300 fans. 

The pool is equipped with state-of-the-art electronic 

timing system and scoreboard. 

Ohio Northern has fared well at home in the modern 

era during the past 13 seasons. 

The ONU men are 52-29 in the friendly confines 

for a winning percentage of .642 and have posted 

winning seasons nine of the past 11 seasons. 

The Lady Polar Bears have posted a 50-34 record 

at home in 13 years for a winning percentage of .595. 

The Sports Center also houses a state-of-the-art 

indoor track and field facility with a 200-meter track, 

two racquetball courts, three basketball and volleyball 

courts, two weight rooms, an athletic training 

room, a dance and exercise room, a wrestling room, a 

gymnastics room, a 120-yard elevated running track, 

classrooms and faculty offices, and a VIP lounge with 

views of both the center gymnasium and pool. 

The facility is also designed to accommodate 

the teaching and learning programs of the human 

performance and sport sciences department as well 

as special events like concerts and commencement 

exercises. 

During inclement weather in late fall, the Sports 

Center provides practice space so that all six of 

ONU’s fall sports and its seven winter sports teams 

can hold practices indoors at the same time. 

Seventeen acres of land adjacent to the Sports Center 

have been developed into recreation, practice, and 

playing fields for baseball, softball, soccer, football 

and track. 

The University has six outdoor tennis courts, a 

rugby field, a 2.5-mile fitness course and an 18-hole 

disc golf course.

About Ohio Northern University 

Established in 1871, Ohio Northern University is a private, competitive, 

comprehensive University offering nationally ranked academic 

programs in the liberal arts and professional programs to students in its 

five colleges: Arts & Sciences, Business Administration, Engineering, 

Pharmacy and Law.

Dr. Kendall Baker 

-University President 

Dr. Kendall Baker is the 10th president of Ohio Northern University and begins his 11th year at the helm in 

the fall of 2009. 

Dr. Baker served as president of the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks, N.D., for seven years 

(1992-99). The University of North Dakota is an eight-college teaching and research, state-assisted institution 

that enrolls 10,300 students. 

He earned the B.A. degree in political science from the University of Maryland and the M.A. degree and 

Ph.D. from Georgetown University. 

Dr. Baker has more than 40 years of university academic and administrative experience. 

He has served in positions including vice president and provost at Northern Illinois University (1987-92), 

dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Bowling Green State University (1982-87) and head of the department 

and professor of political science at the University of Wyoming (1967-82). 

Dr. Baker and his wife, Toby, have five grown children. Dr. and Mrs. Baker reside in Ada. 

Mr. Tom Simmons 

-Director of Athletics 

Mr. Tom Simmons is in his 11th year as director of athletics at Ohio Northern University. 

Simmons is an Ohio Northern graduate, with the B.S.B.A degree in Business Administration (’85) and the B.A. 

degree in Sport Management (’86). He earned the M.S. degree in Sports Administration from Ohio University in 

1987. 

He has a strong background in sports administration and promotions in professional baseball. Simmons served 

as General Manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers’ Class A minor league affiliate in Vero Beach, Florida from 1987- 

1997. He also was in charge of stadium operations for Spring Training games and served as the Dodgers’ Minor 

League Equipment Coordinator during that time. 

Mr. Simmons served as the General Manager of the San Diego Padres Class AA affiliate in Mobile, AL in 1998 

and 1999. He received the 1998 Southern League Community Relations Award and was named the 1991 Florida 

State League Executive of the Year award. 

Simmons is a native of Ada. He is married to Julie Markley, a 1988 graduate of ONU and a 4-year letter winner 

in women’s basketball and one letter in cross country. They have two children, Tyler (17) and Lindsay (15). 

Ms. Kate Witte 

-Senior Women’s Administrator 

Ms. Kate Witte is entering her ninth year as ONU’s senior women’s administrator and assistant athletic director. 

She also serves as ONU’s head volleyball coach, the NCAA Great Lakes Region 

representative for volleyball and is an assistant professor in the ONU department of human performance and sport sciences. 

During her 17 years at ONU, Witte has guided the Polar Bears to an impressive 454-146 record (.755 winning 

percentage), 14 Ohio Athletic Conference regular season titles, 10 OAC tournament championships, 15 NCAA Division 

III tournament bids, eight NCAA 

Division III tournament Sweet 16 appearances and three Elite 8 appearances. 

Witte came to ONU from Iowa State University, where she had been a temporary 

instructor of health studies in the department of physical education and leisure studies and the coach for the men’s volleyball 

club team for two years. 

Witte graduated from the University of Northern Iowa in 1982 with a degree in health and physical education. In 1989 

Witte obtained her master’s degree from Indiana University in school health education. 

While at Indiana she served as an associate instructor and graduate assistant to the women’s volleyball program.

Peggy Ewald - Head Coach 

Peggy Ewald is in her sixth season as head coach of the ONU men’s and women’s swimming 

and diving programs. 

She also serves as assistant facility manager and as a lecturer at ONU. Ewald is the first fulltime 

swimming and diving coach in ONU history. 

In her first five seasons at the helm, Ewald guided the men’s team to Ohio Athletic Conference 

Championships each year and the women’s team to the 2007 and 2009 OAC titles. 

The Polar Bear men and women have each won four OAC Regular Season Championships. 

She was named the OAC Men’s Coach of the Year in ’05, ’08 and ’09 and the OAC Women’s 

Coach of the Year in ’06, ’07 and ’09. 

Her squads have set 45 school records during her tenure. 

Ewald was also an assistant coach at ONU in 2003-04. 

She arrived at ONU with impressive coaching credentials. 

Ewald is a Level 4 ASCA certified swimming coach, a level 5 ASCA certified disabled swimming 

coach and has 15 years of coaching experience working with novice to National Champions. 

She was one of the Level III and III coaches on the travel list with the US Paralympic Team.

Ewald was head coach of Tiffin Columbian H.S. from 

1997-2004, was head coach of Tiffin Calvert H.S. from 

2001-’04 where she coached six Ohio High School State 

placers. 

She also served as an assistant coach at the University 

of Findlay from 1997-99. She coached with the Tiffin 

YMCA swim team and for many years took athletes to the 

YMCA National level. 

Ewald is also the founder of the USA Swimming club 

team Seneca Aquatic Klub team, where she has coached 

Senior National, US Open and two current members of the 

US Paralympian Team. 

She also coached with the USA Swimming FAST age-group swim team in Findlay for five years. 

The Tiffin, Ohio, native also worked as the Dean of Academic Affairs at AEC-Southern Ohio College in Findlay from 2001-04 

and owned and directed the Ohio Institute of Electrology in Tiffin from 1982-2001. 

She received her B.A. degree in business administration with honors from Tiffin in 1989 and earned a M.A. in education from 

Heidelberg in 1996. 

Ewald is married to Dan Ewald and they have three children; Ellen, a Heidelberg graduate, Jessica, a graduate of Ohio Northern, 

and Jacob, a graduate of DeVry Institute in Columbus. 

Samamtha Phillips - Asst. Diving 

Samantha Phillips is in her second season 

as a student assistant diving coach at Ohio 

Northern. 

She is currently enrolled in the ONU 

School of Law. 

She graduated Magna Cum Laude from 

West Chester (Pa.) in 2008, where she was 

a PSAC Scholar-Athlete and was named to 

the Athletic Director’s Academic Honor Roll 

every semester. 

In 2006, competed at the NCAA Division 

II National Swimming and Diving Championships 

in Indianapolis, Ind. 

Samantha graduated from Pottsville (Pa.) 

High School, where she left her mark as the 

Schuylkill League Diving Champion, and as a PAHS record-holder. 

Justin Hiskey - Meet Mgmt. 

Justin Hiskey is in his fifth year as an assistant 

swimming coach. 

He serves primarily as the meet manager, 

helping run each home meet from an administrative 

position. 

Justin was a four-year letter winner for 

ONU from 2003-2006 serving as captain his 

junior and senior years. 

His honors include being a 4-year All-OAC 

honoree and two time Academic All-District 

award winner. 

He earned his bachelor’s degree from Ohio 

Northern in mechanical engineering in 2007. 

Justin currently works for Crown Equipment 

Corporation in New Bremen, Ohio. 

Justin is originally from St. Marys, Ohio, where he coaches the community’s 

summer age-group swim team. 


The Ohio Northern men’s swimming 

and diving team will be looking for its 

sixth consecutive Ohio Athletic Conference 

Championships title in 2009-10. 

The Polar Bears welcome back 16 

lettermen from last year’s squad, including 

six that have won OAC Championships in 

their careers under sixth-year head coach 

Peggy Ewald. 

Not only is ONU gunning for another 

OAC crown, the Polar Bears are also looking 

to expand on its two NCAA participants 

from a year ago. 

“We are looking beyond the immediate 

competition of the regular season, on into 

the NCAA Championships for a few of our 

team members,” ONU head coach Peggy 

Ewald said. “Nothing can be taken for 

granted in the OAC. As we push forward, 

so have the other teams. Competition has 

gotten better in the OAC, so learning from 

past mistakes and moving the bar higher is 

essential.” 

Northern is looking to duplicate last 

year’s dominating performance, as the 

Bears won the OAC title by a whopping 

101 points. 

What Ewald hopes to improve on 

The 2009-10 Ohio Northern women’s 

swimming and diving team will be gunning 

for its third Ohio Athletic Conference 

Championships crown in the last four 

seasons this winter. 

ONU won 15 of the 20 OAC Championships 

events a year ago, setting 7 OAC 

records and 9 school records in the process. 

“We feel optimistic about our chances 

to win another OAC title this season,” 

sixth-year head coach Peggy Ewald said. 

“We have nine seniors and have the possibility 

to develop our individuals more 

fully. We hope to be very competitive in the 

OAC race.” 

Sophomore Michelle Eggers was 

named the OAC Women’s Swimmer of the 

Year as a freshman in 2009, as she swept 

the distance events by winning the 200 free 

(1:56.94), the 500 free (5:10.69) and the 

1650 free (18:04.16). 

Eggers won five titles overall, as she 

was part of the 400 and 800 free relay 

teams. 

Sophomore Alison Garbash also won 

five OAC titles. She won the 50 free in an 

ONU record and NCAA “B” Cut time of 

:24.08 and was part of the 200 and 400 free 

relay and 200 and 400 medley relay teams. 

2009-10 Previews 

Men’s Reacp 

ONU’s seven NCAA qualifying performances 

at last year’s Championships. 

“Our focus again this season is to win 

the OAC,” Ewald said. “But we would like 

to get more NCAA “B” Cuts and turn some 

of those “B” Cuts into “A” Cuts and get 

more people into the NCAA Championships.” 

Leading the list of returners is junior 

Michael Schultz. 

Schultz was named the OAC Men’s 

Swimmer of the Year in both 2008 and 

2009 and has also competed at the NCAA 

Championships meet in the distance free 

events each of the past two seasons. 


Swimmer of the Year for the second consecutive 

season, sweeping the 200, 500 and 

1650 free events. 

Schultz won six OAC crowns and 

qualified for the NCAA Championships 

with OAC records and NCAA qualifying 

marks in the 200 (1:40.79), 500 (4:28.33) 

and 1650 (15:45.82) freestyle events. 

He set the Ocasek Natatorium records 

in the 1,000 (9:33.63) and 1,650 free events 

and surpassed the NCAA “A” Cut in both 

the 500 and 1650 free. 

Women’s Recap 

Senior Katherine Moore swept the 

100 and 200 fly titles, winning in :58.84 

and 2:13.98, respectively. Her time of 

:58.40 in the prelims was an OAC and 

ONU record and NCAA “B” Cut time. 

Moore is now a 12-time OAC Champion 

and a 17-time All-OAC swimmer in the 

free and fly events. She had previously won 

the 50 and 100 free in 2007 and the 100 fly 

in ’08. 

Moore also set the ONU and OAC 

record in the 100 fly, swimming a :58.40 in 

the prelims 

Senior Jillian Huber is a 7-time OAC 

Champion, winning the last two 200 IM 

titles and the 100 Back titles in ’07 and ’08. 

She also has three titles as part of winning 

400 and 800 free relay teams. 

Senior Terri Lynn Shigle is a 4-time 

All-Conference honors in the diving events, 

winning the 1-meter crown in 2007. 

Junior Hannah Bukowy also won four 

events, claiming the 200 breast in 2:29.37 

and the 200 free, 200 medley and 400 medley 

relays. 

She swept the 100 and 200 breast 

OAC titles last year. She is an 8-time OAC 

Champion and has earned All-OAC honors 

in 12 events. 

Junior Garrett Dauch won the 100 fly 

in :50.95, setting OAC and ONU records 

and surpassing the NCAA “B” Cut in the 

process. In all, he won three OAC titles on 

the weekend. 

Dauch also set an OAC and ONU record 

in the 100 back, as he was clocked in 

:53.59 in the first leg of Northern’s winning 

400 Medley Relay team. 

Junior Ryan Oberst won the 200 

breast in 2:12.90 and was also on ONU’s 

winning 200 free relay squad a year ago. 

Sophomore Ryan Bender won the 200 

I.M. in 1:57.39 and the 200 back in 1:55.27 

and finished the weekend with four OAC 

titles to his credit. 

Sophomore Anders Samuelson was 

on all four of Ohio Northern’s winning 

relay teams and junior Casey Davis was 

part of ONU’s winning 800 free relay team. 

Seniors Dan Henry and Bill Neidinger 

and juniors Jacob Andreason, Warren 

Burless, Nick Swint and Andre Velez give 

ONU a solid nucleus of upperclassmen to 

compliment its OAC Champions. 

Sophomores Joey Bechtel, Andy Garlock,

return after solid rookie campaigns. 

Junior Cassie Fennell was on the winning 

200 free and 200 medley relay teams. 

Sophomore Sarah Fiffick won four 

events as a freshman a year ago, claiming 

the 100 free in :54.37 and as a part of 

ONU’s 200, 400 and 800 free relays. 

She is now a 2-time OAC champion 

and a 5-time All-OAC honoree. 

Sophomore Kaitlin Early was part of 

Northern’s winning 800 free relay squad. 

Seniors Delaney Banas, Janelle Cain, 

Kathryn Heagle, Kelly Jensen, Sara 

Oswald and Jenna Schaffner all return to 

provide outstanding senior leadership. 

Juniors Caitlin Fanello and sophomores 

Kristin DeWees and Rori Thomas 

also return after fine seasons in 2008-09. 

Add to the mix a solid freshman class 

and its easy to see why the Polar Bears are 

excited about the upcoming season. 

“We expect it to be a tight OAC meet,” 

Ewald said. “It will be about who works 

hard all season long and brings it the day 

of the show. We have had too many ninth 

place finishes over the past few years and 

we need to turn those into top-8 finishes. 

“We would also like to get more 

NCAA Cuts and get some women into the 

NCAA Champioonships meet.”

The Ohio Northern men’s swimming 

and diving team won its fifth consecutive 

OAC Championships crown in 2009. 

Senior George Chesney was named 

the OAC men’s Diver of the Year and 

earned Honorable mention All-America 

honors at the NCAA III Championships in 

Minneapolis, Minn. 

Sophomore Michael Schultz was 

named the OAC Men’s Swimmer of the 

Year and also competed at the NCAA 

Championships meet in the distance free 

events. 

The Polar Bears (9-5 overall, 

4-0 OAC) won the 5-team meet with 

303 points, defeating second-place 

Baldwin-Wallace by a whopping 101 

points. 

Ohio Northern also won the OAC 

Regular Season title with a perfect 4-0 

record. 

The Polar Bears won 14 of the 20 

events, setting 14 school and eight OAC 

records in the process. 

ONU won four of the five relays, 

setting OAC and ONU records in the 200 

free (1:25.20), 400 free (3:01.17), 800 free 

(6:52.55) and 400 medley (3:31.69) relays. 

The Ohio Northern women’s swimming 

and diving team won its second Ohio 

Athletic Conference Championships crown 

in the last three seasons by claiming the 

2009 OAC Championships meet. 

The Polar Bears (8-7 overall, 4-0 

OAC) won the title with 310 points, defeating 

second place John Carroll by 95.5. 

ONU won 15 of the 20 events, setting 

7 OAC records and 9 school records in the 

process. 

Peggy Ewald and her staff were named 

the OAC Women’s Coaching Staff of the 

Year. 

Northern dominated the relays, winning 

the 200 free relay (1:40.31), the 400 

free (3:38.17), the 800 free (7:55.71), the 

200 medley relay (1:49.38) and the 400 

medley relay (4:02.62). 

All five relays set OAC records and all 

but the 400 free relay were ONU records. 

Freshman Michelle Eggers was 

named the OAC Women’s Swimmer of the 

Year, as she swept the distance events by 

winning the 200 free (1:56.94), the 500 free 

(5:10.69) and the 1650 free (18:04.16). 

Eggers won five titles overall, as she 

was part of the 400 and 800 free relay 

teams.

Men’s Reacp 

The Polar Bears also surpassed the 

NCAA “B” Cut in the 400 and 800 free 

relays. 

Northern also had three pool records 

and had seven NCAA qualifying performances. 


Swimmer of the Year for the second consecutive 

season, sweeping the 200, 500 and 

1650 free events. 

Schultz won six OAC crowns and 

qualified for the NCAA Championships 

with OAC records and NCAA qualifying 

marks in the 200 (1:40.79), 500 (4:28.33) 

and 1650 (15:45.82) freestyle events. 

He set the Ocasek Natatorium records 

in the 1,000 (9:33.63) and 1,650 free events 

and surpassed the NCAA “A” Cut in both 

the 500 and 1650 free. 

Chesney defended his 3-meter diving 

OAC crown and was named the OAC 

Men’s Diver of the Year. 

He won the 3-meter with 484 points 

and was All-OAC with a second place 

finish in the 1-meter with 466.50 points. 

He surpassed the NCAA “B” cut in both 

events. 

Senior Brett Kuhn won the 50 free in 

Women’s Recap 

Freshman Alison Garbash also won 

five OAC titles. She won the 50 free in an 

ONU record and NCAA “B” Cut time of 

:24.08 and was part of the 200 and 400 free 

relay and 200 and 400 medley relay teams. 

Junior Katherine Moore swept the 

100 and 200 fly titles, winning in :58.84 

and 2:13.98, respectively. 

Her time of :58.40 in the prelims was 

an OAC and ONU record and NCAA “B” 

Cut time. 

Moore is now a 12-time OAC Champion 

and a 17-time All-OAC swimmer in the 

free and fly events. She had previously won 

the 50 and 100 free in 2007 and the 100 fly 

in ’08. 

Moore also set the ONU and OAC 

record in the 100 fly, swimming a :58.40 in 

the prelims 

Sophomore Hannah Bukowy also 

won four events, claiming the 200 breast in 

2:29.37 and the 200 free, 200 medley and 

400 medley relays. 

She swept the 100 and 200 breast 

OAC titles last year. She is an 8-time OAC 

Champion and has earned All-OAC honors 

in 12 events. 

Freshman Sarah Fiffick won four 

events, claiming the 100 free in :54.37 and 

an ONU record and NCAA “B” Cut time 

of 21.09. He won four OAC titles overall 

and ends his career with an ONU record 15 

OAC titles to his credit. He earned All- 

OAC honors in 24 events in his career. 

Freshman Ryan Bender won the 200 

I.M. in 1:57.39 and the 200 back in 1:55.27 

and finished the weekend with four OAC 

titles to his credit. 

Sophomore Garrett Dauch won the 

100 fly in :50.95, setting OAC and ONU 

records and surpassing the NCAA “B” Cut 

in the process. In all, he won three OAC 

titles on the weekend. 

Dauch also set an OAC and ONU record 

in the 100 back, as he was clocked in 

:53.59 in the first leg of Northern’s winning 

400 Medley Relay team. 

Senior Jeb Deal won the OAC crown 

in the 100 breast in :59.95 and was on 

ONU’s winning 400 medley relay team. 

Sophomore Ryan Oberst won the 200 

breast in 2:12.90 and was also on ONU’s 

winning 200 free relay squad. 

Freshman Anders Samuelson was on 

all four of Ohio Northern’s winning relay 

teams. 

as a part of ONU’s 200, 400 and 800 free 

relays. 

Junior Jillian Huber won three events 

and defended her OAC title in the 200 IM, 

winning in 2:11.93. 

She was also on the winning 400 and 

800 free relay teams. 

Huber is now a 7-time OAC champ 


Junior Lacey Shumate, who was the 

2007 OAC Swimmer of the Year as a freshman, 

won the 400 I.M. for the third consecutive 

year, claiming the title in 4:46.38. 

She was also on the winning 400 medley 

relay team and is now a 12-time OAC 

Champion and a 17-time All-OAC award 

winner. 

Sophomore Cassandra Fennell was 

on the winning 200 free and 200 medley 

relay teams. 

She is now a 2-time OAC champion 


Freshman Kaitlin Early was part of 

Northern’s winning 800 free relay squad. 

Junior Terri Lynn Shigle earned All- 

Conference honors in the diving events, 

finishing second in the 1-meter with 375.80 

points and finishing third in the 3-meter 

diving with 325.40 points.

The Ohio Athletic Conference is the 

third oldest existing collegiate conference 

in the country. 

Founded in 1902, the OAC is predated 

only by the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic 

Association (1888), and the Big Ten 

(1895). 

The OAC sponsors championships in 21 

sports –11 men’s and 10 women’s. The conference 

has held championships in football 

since 1902, and in men’s track since 1903. 

Women’s championships were started in 

the 1984-85 season. 

The present conference membership 

consists of ten private colleges in Ohio. 

All of the OAC schools were founded in 

the 19th century and enjoy outstanding 

academic reputations. The enrollments at
