Ohio Northern University About Ohio Northern University Established in 1871, Ohio Northern University is a private, competitive, comprehensive University offering nationally ranked academic programs in the liberal arts and professional programs to students in its five colleges: Arts & Sciences, Business Administration, Engineering, Pharmacy and Law. At the turn of the 20th century, Ohio Northern University became affiliated with the United Methodist Church. Ohio Northern University Dr. Kendall Baker -University President Dr. Kendall Baker is the 10th president of Ohio Northern University and begins his 11th year at the helm in the fall of 2009. Dr. Baker served as president of the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks, N.D., for seven years (1992-99). The University of North Dakota is an eight-college teaching and research, state-assisted institution that enrolls 10,300 students. He earned the B.A. degree in political science from the University of Maryland and the M.A. degree and Ph.D. from Georgetown University. Dr. Baker has more than 40 years of university academic and administrative experience. He has served in positions including vice president and provost at Northern Illinois University (1987-92), dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Bowling Green State University (1982-87) and head of the department and professor of political science at the University of Wyoming (1967-82). Dr. Baker and his wife, Toby, have five grown children. Dr. and Mrs. Baker reside in Ada. Mr. Tom Simmons -Director of Athletics Mr. Tom Simmons is in his 11th year as director of athletics at Ohio Northern University. Simmons is an Ohio Northern graduate, with the B.S.B.A degree in Business Administration (’85) and the B.A. degree in Sport Management (’86). He earned the M.S. degree in Sports Administration from Ohio University in 1987. He has a strong background in sports administration and promotions in professional baseball. Simmons served as General Manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers’ Class A minor league affiliate in Vero Beach, Florida from 1987- 1997. He also was in charge of stadium operations for Spring Training games and served as the Dodgers’ Minor League Equipment Coordinator during that time. Mr. Simmons served as the General Manager of the San Diego Padres Class AA affiliate in Mobile, AL in 1998 and 1999. He received the 1998 Southern League Community Relations Award and was named the 1991 Florida State League Executive of the Year award. Simmons is a native of Ada. He is married to Julie Markley, a 1988 graduate of ONU and a 4-year letter winner in women’s basketball and one letter in cross country. They have two children, Tyler (17) and Lindsay (15). Ms. Kate Witte -Senior Women’s Administrator Ms. Kate Witte is entering her ninth year as ONU’s senior women’s administrator and assistant athletic director. She also serves as ONU’s head volleyball coach, the NCAA Great Lakes Region representative for volleyball and is an assistant professor in the ONU department of human performance and sport sciences. During her 17 years at ONU, Witte has guided the Polar Bears to an impressive 454-146 record (.755 winning percentage), 14 Ohio Athletic Conference regular season titles, 10 OAC tournament championships, 15 NCAA Division III tournament bids, eight NCAA Division III tournament Sweet 16 appearances and three Elite 8 appearances. Witte came to ONU from Iowa State University, where she had been a temporary instructor of health studies in the department of physical education and leisure studies and the coach for the men’s volleyball club team for two years. Witte graduated from the University of Northern Iowa in 1982 with a degree in health and physical education. In 1989 Witte obtained her master’s degree from Indiana University in school health education. While at Indiana she served as an associate instructor and graduate assistant to the women’s volleyball program.
