This issue of Haddonfield Today

will be published on the 30th

anniversary of the first issue of

What’s On in Haddonfield,

its longtime predecessor.

Where were you in

November 1991, and

what were you doing at

the time?

Mount Laurel’s

DON FLATLEY

was managing a

FedEx facility in

Fort Lauderdale,

Florida. “I’d been

there for about five

years, having been

transferred from

Central Jersey.”

Carol Harkavy of

Cherry Hill had

recently retired from

a tenured position

at City College

of New York and

was “managing

my husband’s

medical practice in

Ridgewood.”

MARC and GAIL

LUDWICK of Erial

had just bought their

first house. Marc

was playing a lot of

competitive sports,

mostly softball and

basketball. “Those

days are long gone,”

he says.

CAROL JACK of

Cherry Hill had just

transitioned from

a job with Western

Union, “processing

telegrams,” to a data

entry position with

ISI. “In November

1991, my daughters

were 14 and 6.”

In 1991, DIDI RUFER

of Cinnaminson

celebrated 25 years

of marriage with

her high school

sweetheart. “And we

had just welcomed

our first grandchild.

I was working as a

contract manager

for a mapping firm

in Mount Laurel.”

GERRY NANOS

of Haddonfield

was living on West

Summit Avenue in

November 1991.

“Our son Brian was

11,” says Gerry. “I

was working in real

estate finance with

Fannie Mae, and

was a member of the

Zoning Board.”

“Shop Small” –

Nov 26 to 28

For the past few

years, Small Business

Saturday – an American

Express initiative

designed to encourage

shoppers to patronize

local businesses on the

day after Black Friday

– has been extended

to a three-day event in

Haddonfield.

Small Business

Weekend will begin

on Fri Nov 26 and run

thru Sun Nov 28 and

the Partnership for

Haddonfield hopes

everyone will shop to

their heart’s content and

fuel the local economy in

the process.

“Now more than ever,”

the Partnership says,

“it’s important to choose

to support small because

when you do, money

circulates back into the

local economy, thus

helping the community

grow. Studies show that

‘shopping small’ has an

undeniable trickle-down

effect. For every $100

spent at a locally owned

business, nearly $70

stays in the community

and contributes to local

economic growth.”

The Partnership says

that “shopping small

also allows customers to

get to know the people

behind the product

or service, which

results in unbeatable

customer service and

personalization.”

Fri Nov 26 is the first

night for Candlelight

Shopping, which takes

place each Friday during

the holiday season from

6 to 9pm.

Note: Parking will be

free downtown from

Thanksgiving through

Christmas Day.

Sunday Monday Tuesday Wednes

Are you ready for some football?

The annual Thanksgiving Day football game between Haddonfield and

Haddon Heights will be played at Heights on Thu Nov 25. Kick-off at 11am.

The Bulldawgs are on a roll, having won their last seven matches, including

the NJSIAA Central Jersey Group 2 title. Their season record is 9-2 overall,

and 5-1 in their league.

The Haddonfield-Haddon Heights rivalry stretches back to 1902. This

year’s game will be the schools’ 112th meeting on the gridiron. (Some

years were skipped during times of international strife – most recently

2020, because of the pandemic.) Haddonfield has long held a seemingly

insurmountable record: 63 wins, 42 losses, 6 ties.

The Dawgs’ final game of the 2021 season will be against Point Pleasant

Boro High School on Sat Dec 4 at Rutgers. Kick-off at 10am. Go Dawgs!

Pizza party!

On 12/1, 6 to 9

Haddonfield is widely

(and enviously) known

for its many “bests” and

“firsts,” but here’s one

you probably didn’t see

coming: Best Pizza in

New Jersey.

It’s true. NJ.com

recently published “New

Jersey’s 99 greatest

pizzas, ranked.” A pizza

created in Haddonfield

topped the list.

The authors of the

survey, Peter Genovese

and Jeremy Schneider,

traversed the state

for months, “sampling

true masterpieces

of marinara and

mozzarella” to produce

a list that “spans well

beyond classic red-sauce

pies.”

(Genovese, who wrote

the review of the #1

pie, knows his stuff. He

is a food and features

writer for NJ Advance

Media, which publishes

newspapers (including

the Newark Star-Ledger)

that reach more than

two million readers, and

digital media such as

NJ.com. He is the author

of ten books on food,

Jersey diners, the Jersey

Shore, US 1, New York

pizza, and Americana.)

Enough background!

What’s Numero Uno?

It’s Pepper Jawni Pie,

produced by Arnab

Maitra, the owner of

Pizza Crime at 139 Kings

Highway East.

The key ingredients:

Grande Rossa pepperoni,

mozzarella, oregano,

and smoke from Pizza

Crime’s wood-fired oven.

In August 2020, Matt

Skoufalos of NJPen.com

noted that the oven,

“shipped over from Italy

Pizza Crime will be

celebrating its #1 ranking

on Wed Dec 1 from 6 to

9pm, with a special: Buy

the Pepper Jawni and get

a Marinara for half price

– eat-in or take out.

If you decide to “take

out,” you’ll find that a

number of Pizza Crime’s

neighbors have joined

the celebration, with

a block party on Kings

Highway E and Mechanic

Street and specials of

their own:

• DiBartolo’s European

Bakery (voted #1

recently for Best “Wow”

Cake by SJ Magazine)

– See the three-foothigh

tribute to the

Hadrosaurus, the #1

dinosaur in the world.

• Downtown Cookies

(voted #1 for “Monstersized

Magazine) – Free #1

• King’s Road Brewing

Company – Specials

and give-aways at

Haddonfield’s first and

only brewery.

• Sparrow’s Snacks on

Mechanic Street – the

debut of “Number Uno,”

all-natural margarita

pizza popcorn.

Musical entertainment

will be provided on

Mechanic Street from 6

to 8pm by Haddonfield’s

own Craig Whitaker.

The Number One

Block Party is made

possible by Segel

Watson McCarthy of

Weichert Realtors.

Miss the Dine & Donate for the Skirmish?

The next Skirmish on Kings Highway – an annual event when Redcoats battle

Continentals for possession of the Indian King Tavern – is scheduled for Sat

Jun 4, 2022.

A committee of volunteers is working hard to make the next iteration of the

Skirmish the best yet, and is planning a host of ancillary Revolutionary Warthemed

events and activities.

The committee’s most recent fund-raising initiative was a Dine & Donate at

Passariello’s on Tue Nov 23. The restaurant contributed 20% of meal checks as

a donation to the cause.

If you missed the event but would like to contribute, go here: bit.ly/3nHcIWw.

The Friends of the Indian King Tavern Museum is a 501(c)(3) organization, so

donations are tax-deductible. To find out more about the event, and perhaps

get involved, visit IndianKingFriends.org.

The lowdown on leaves

The Borough’s leaf collection program for 2021

is progressing well, thanks in part to favorable

weather.

Two rounds of the town have been completed.

The third round was scheduled to start on Tue Nov

23 or Wed Nov 24.

The best way to find out when leaf collection will

take place in your sector is to go to the Borough’s

website: haddonfieldnj.org. On the home page,

select Latest News, then the Current Topics bullet.

Remember: Place leaves in the park strip, not in

the street – or else! ($50 fine for first offense.)

No park strip? Edge of lawn.

The Last Word

haddonfield.today | 3

Thirty years –

Who would-a thunk it?

By David Hunter

In July 1991, the bean-counters at the Gannett corporation pulled the plug on The

Haddon Gazette, a newspaper that had served the Haddonfield community since 1901

– ninety years. They also terminated five other community newspapers in the

Suburban Newspaper Group.

A weekly broadsheet, the Gazette did more than deliver Haddonfield news to

residents and business owners, it provided an after-school job each Thursday for

dozens of local kids: the quintessential small-town paper route.

Although it enjoyed a high level of “penetration into the market” (as we say in the

biz) – partly because few residents were willing to say “No” to a neighbor kid who

knocked on their door, seeking a 25¢-a-week subscription – the Gazette had trouble

competing with Shoppers Guide, which was mailed free to every home and business

and offered advertisers dozens of editions throughout the region.

So in the summer of 1991, for the first time in nearly a century, Haddonfield found

itself without a newspaper of its own.

Some weeks later, while flying to Australia, I reflected on what that loss meant to our

community. It’s a very long flight, and it affords plenty of time for reflection. Ditto the

flight home. By the time I returned to Haddonfield, I had pretty much decided to take

the plunge, and publish a replacement for the Gazette. Well, sort-of.

Although I had done a lot of writing and was a skilled graphic designer, I was not a

journalist. And I did not have the financial resources that would enable me to hire

someone who knew not only what to say and how to say it, but what not to say. So I

decided to publish a different kind of newspaper – a “newscalendar” – that confined

itself to publicizing coming events.

Thus, What’s On in Haddonfield was born.

I rented the smallest and cheapest

office I could find, above the Military

Recruiting Office on S. Haddon Avenue.

For three months! It was also above

Kwik-Kopy Printing, which meant

that I did not need to spend scarce dollars

on a photocopier and fax machine. (I splurged

on a Macintosh computer instead, with a whopping 105 megabyte hard drive.)

The owner of a retail store in town heard that I was starting a new business and

suggested that a friend of hers might be interested in helping me to run it. I hired Pat

Bigley, who served faithfully as my right hand for nearly 25 years.

Then I ran an ad for a sales rep in the Courier-Post. Donna Eisberg, an experienced

ad rep who had relocated recently from North Jersey, responded. She turned down my

offer of a position, saying that my concept for a newscalendar was “dumb.” I groveled

and she relented, came on board, and stayed – productively – for many years.

We published the first issue of What’s On in Haddonfield on Friday, November 29,

1991 – 30 years ago this week. A mini-tab with a whopping 20 pages.

Of the 37 advertisers in that issue, only six are still in business: Haddonfield Floral

Company, The Happy Hippo, Holl-Murphy Funeral Home (now Kain-Murphy Funeral

Services), Jay West, Patricia of Mullica Hill, and Richard Bennett Clothing for Men.

(You’ll find ads for the Hippo, Kain-Murphy, and Richard Bennett on pages 17, 23, and

37 of this issue, respectively. We must be doing something right.)

Yes, we must be doing something right, because a number of advertisers have been

with us for not just 5 or 10 years, but for 20 years and more: Clean Sweep, Pro Imports,

Lenny Vermaat & Leonard, Arts Plus Gallery, Thom Wagner Architect. Some have said,

“Just keep running my ad until I tell you to stop.” We must be doing something right,

because many readers have told us, “I just love your little publication.”

So to all of those advertisers, to all of those readers, and especially to the dozens of

employees who have come, stayed, and moved on over the past 30 years, I just want

to say – at this time of Thanksgiving – a heartfelt “thank you.” Who would-a thunk it?
