JOHN RADFORD
Welcome to Carlisle United
chairman Andrew Jenkins and
Salford City’s board of directors for
this week’s two home games at One
Call Stadium.
Due to programme printing
deadlines, I am writing these notes
before the Emirates FA Cup third
round draw. By the time you read
this, I hope the draw has been
favourable to us, our players and
management, given their exploits this
season in the world’s oldest domestic
cup competition.
I was most proud of our performance
at Doncaster Rovers.
We performed superbly in the
previous round at Sunderland,
which was followed by an equally
memorable day at Keepmoat
Stadium at the weekend.
As many of you know, I have enjoyed
long-standing ties with Doncaster for
many years. My company, One Call
Insurance, is based there and has
previously sponsored Rovers over
many seasons.
Mansfield Town, of course, is and
always been my club since I was a
boy and for me to see over 3,000
Stags’ fans in such fine voice from
start to end made the victory even
more special.
Well done to Nigel, the players
and our supporters for creating an
unforgettable afternoon.
I have been so heartened to see
our management and squad turn
the form book upside down and
earn seven wins from our last eight
fixtures. This should show the
character which we have in our
squad.
As a result of our excellent form, I am
hopeful that our Christmas Cracker
ticket deal will be well received. We
have endeavoured to make watching
the Stags as affordable as possible
over the festive period as we know
that money can be scarce at this time
of year.
Thank you to you all for your positive
and encouraging support.
NIGEL
CLOUGH
Welcome to Carlisle United the supporters who travelled such
manager Keith Millen, Salford long journeys to Sutton United and
City manager Gary Bowyer and Crawley Town in recent weeks, so a
both clubs’ staff and supporters to home draw and the opportunity to
One Call Stadium for this week’s host a memorable cup tie would be
two home matches.
enjoyable.
We head into our first game against
Carlisle off the back of a terrific
victory away at Doncaster Rovers
on Saturday in the Emirates FA Cup
second round.
I was incredibly proud of the players
for our second-half display. I think
the performance after half-time was
probably the best we have played
this season and to do so against
League One opposition was very
encouraging.
To attack the goal that 3,292 of our
constantly-vocal supporters were
situated behind in the second-half
gave us a real lift. The support the
team received on Saturday was
special and we really wanted to
reward the fans for the excellent
backing they have given us all
season.
Some of the football we played in the
win at Keepmoat Stadium was great
to watch. It was pleasing to see a lot
of the one and two touch play we
work on in training come to fruition
for our third goal of the afternoon.
At the time of writing, I am
unaware of the team we will
face in the third round of the
competition because of printing
deadlines.
I hope that we have the opportunity
to host the fixture in front of our
supporters at One Call Stadium. The
lads and I are very appreciative of
We have shown with our recent form
of seven victories in eight games
that we are building momentum
ahead of an important stage in the
season. There are many games over
the festive period and we must look
to accumulate as many points as
possible in order to achieve our goals
come the end of the season.
We hope to build on our recent
success on the road and give our
home supporters two performances
to be proud of.
Enjoy the games.
Mansfield Town Football Club is
delighted to announce former
goalkeeper Ian Deakin as our new
commercial executive.
Ian played for Mansfield from July
2013 to August 2014 and was a
popular member of the first team
squad.
Since retiring as a goalkeeper, the
34-year-old has enjoyed an extensive
career within sales and business
development.
Ian spent ten years working as
a technical sales manager in
the industrial, commercial and
automotive industries.
On joining the Stags in his new role,
he said: “I want to work with local
businesses in and around Mansfield.
NEWSDESK
FORMER GOALKEEPER ANNOUNCED AS NEW
COMMERCIAL EXECUTIVE
“It's a great town and it has good
people in it. People work hard in
this town and we appreciate all the
sponsorship that comes in and the
support the fans give us.
“I want to help elevate the club as
high as possible and I am working
hard to do that."
Ian has already begun work in his
new role. The former Mansfield
'keeper has helped get sponsorship
for the club's new scoreboard.
“We have brought in some new
sponsorship for the scoreboard this
week and the signs will be going up
before the Carlisle game.
“The new scoreboard is brilliant – it
looks impressive and is a tool I can
utilise. I know the fans have been
wanting it for a long time.
“The chairman continues to back the
club by installing that. It's part of the
jigsaw.
“You would love everything at a club
to be all-singing, all-dancing and
new, but it has to come as part of
a jigsaw puzzle and we continue to
develop on and off the field.
“It's my role to make sure that
development happens and to make
sure we build those links."
Ian is already the club's head of
academy recruitment. His knowledge
of the game, along with his sales
career, make him a natural fit for his
new position at the club.
“In between playing football for
a living I had a day job in sales
management – technical sales for an
automotive company.
“When this job became available I
believe David Sharpe looked at my CV
– I had recently left my day job – and
he asked me if I would come in and
have an interview because of my skill
set and it went from there.
“I have been in the academy role for
nearly two years now. Coops (Richard
Cooper) and myself were at Forest
together, so I have known him for a
long time.
"I am really pleased to be here. It is a
club that is close to my heart and I'm
excited to get started."
The club’s chief executive, David
Sharpe, said: “I’m delighted Ian has
joined us. Having someone in the
role who knows the club inside out
will be a huge positive for us moving
forwards.
“I am confident that Ian will build
upon the great relationships with our
current partners and explore further
opportunitiesfor the club on national,
regional and local levels.”
SPEEDO MICK VISITS ONE CALL STADIUM
Michael Cullen, also known as
‘Speedo Mick’, visited One Call
Stadium recently as he continued
his fundraising journey walking
to football stadiums in the UK and
Ireland.
Mick, pictured above, has spent the
last eight years raising money for
homeless and mental health charities
by walking to different footballing
stadia in his underpants.
“For the last few years I have been
doing fundraising for charities up and
down the country. I do it [the walk]
all in a pair of knickers basically,” he
said.
“The last challenge [completed] was
a 1,000 mile walk during the winter
months of December and January.
We raised quite a lot of money, half a
million pounds!
“In this year’s walk, I have upped my
game a little bit. I am doing a 2,500
mile walk which started on May 01
and I have now been walking for
seven months. No matter what the
weather is like on the day I do it all in
my Speedos.”
Speedo Mick was keen to point
out that despite the curiosity that
surrounds his unique dresswear, the
reasoning behind the walk is one of
great importance.
“The main purpose of the walk is
that we are going to give a quarter
of a million pounds of the money
that we raised from the last walk to
small charities that support mental
health, disadvantaged children and
homelessness. We are obviously
fundraising as well.
“I’m over 2,000 miles into the walk
at the point of reaching One Call
Stadium. Seven months I’ve been
walking. It’s been a long walk and I
just want to [finish the walk] and go
home now to be honest,” said Mick.
“I’ve had loads of support. I’ve had
loads of people in Mansfield stopping
and getting photographs with me and
saying ‘keep going’ or ‘carry on Mick’
which is really important for me.
“The [previously mentioned] quarter
of a million pounds is coming out
of the Speedo Mick Foundation, a
foundation I have set up myself.
“I was an addict. I have been sobered
now for 19 years. Thankfully, things
have changed and I have the support
so I just want to give back to fantastic
charities that make a massive
difference in our community.
“Now I just want to give back through
the Speedo Mick Foundation.”
THE
ACADEMY
Head of academy recruitment, Ian
Deakin, discusses the under-18s’
development this season…
We have players who are doing
well at the minute, especially
some of the first year scholars in
Charlie Carter, Jakub Kruszynski,
Taylor Anderson, Darien Wauchope
– they’re playing under-18s football
which is great.
In terms of development and
progression for them it’s brilliant that
they are in and around our under-
18s, alongside some of boys in the
second year.
It’s great to have some of the older
ones doing well. Jack Deakin’s
scoring a lot of goals at
the minute, Diego
Edwards is doing
well too so we
have a really
strong team in
the under-18s
– both at first year and second year
level.
We go into every game trying to win
and ensure the team continue their
development.
We just hope to continue to progress
and push the lads to try and get in
and around the first team’s squad.
Ultimately, as an academy player
that is what you want to do.
They need to continue this
progression, learn their trade and
then hopefully they will be able to get
into the first team.
The lads will hope to follow in the
footsteps of George Cooper, Nathan
Caine, Ethan Hill and Josh Scott.
Those players have gone into our first
team squad and some are out on
loan at the minute.
For the boys it’s all about
getting towards the next step
in their careers.
when you’re driving. It’s just rude.
FOOD:
I hate ketchup. I can’t stand the smell or
anything. I don’t like tomatoes at all.
MODERN LIFE:
People being too serious. I don’t get it when people
can’t take banter.
FASHION:
Flared jeans. I can’t be dealing with them.
SPORT:
Cricket. It’s too long and boring to watch.
WILDCARD:
The M45.
I’m always
driving on
it and the
traffic on that
motorway is
a big pet hate
of mine.
CHRISTMAS HOLIDAY CLUB AT MANSFIELD TOWN FOOTBALL IN THE COMMUNITY
The Christmas period is coming up
and Mansfield Town Football in the
Community will be running their
holiday club for three days starting
from Monday 20 December through
to Wednesday 22 December.
Open for ages five to fifteen, the
sporting activities are designed and
delivered by an expert coaching team
with the aim of being fun, interactive,
and challenging for the children
involved.
Suitably skilled children will be
recommended to the academy. It
is important to note there are two
activities for this Christmas provision.
On Monday 20 December there will
be an organised trip to a Christmas
pantomime at the Mansfield Palace
Theatre to watch Sleeping Beauty.
This trip is part of the Junior SSA
membership and is free of charge for
members.
Ice creams are provided at the interval
and a Christmas gift will be given to
each member. The meeting time is
1:30pm outside the Palace Theatre.
The show will begin at 2pm.
WHO’S WHO
Children can be collected at the
Palace Theatre between 4:30pm-
5:00pm depending on when the
show finishes. This provision is for
children only and parents will not be
able to attend. All participants will be
supervised by the FITC staff.
For children four and below, an adult
will have to attend and must purchase
a ticket through FITC’s Joeanne
Shuttleworth. She can be contacted
at Joeanne.Shuttleworth@
mansfieldtownfitc.net.
On December 21-22 the Christmas
holiday club will begin with two
full days of football action. Doors
will open at One Call Stadium from
8:30am and close at 4:00pm. The
activities will cost £16 per day.
Mansfield Town FITC has formed a
partnership with Mansfield Soup
Kitchen. By donating a Christmas
shoebox containing gifts such as
gloves, socks, toothpaste, toothbrush,
deodorant, razors, shower gel,
shampoo and sweets, participants
can attend both holiday club days for
just £25.
The shoeboxes will then be given to
the homeless and donated to the
Mansfield Soup Kitchen. Shoeboxes
MUST be donated by Friday 17
December at 12:00pm at the latest.
Any shoeboxes donated after this date
will not be accepted and you will not
be offered the £25 discounted price
for December 21-22. All participants
should bring a packed lunch with
them as well as a drinks bottle.
THE GOLDEN
‘HIS STORY’
ARCHIVE
PROJECTING A PARADE OF GLORIOUS DAYS FROM
THE WORLD’S OLDEST PROFESSIONAL GROUND
From the sublime to the ridiculous
and everything in between, we look
back with a Stags’ hero of the past,
focusing on memorable behindthe-scenes
moments they will never
forget.
Continuing the season with ‘His-
Story’, is former central defender
Tony Kenworthy who made 121
appearances for the Stags from
1986–90, scoring one goal. Most
notably, Tony scored the winning
penalty to defeat Bristol City in
the Freight Rover Trophy final at
Wembley in 1987.
When I first signed for the
club, which was on-loan, I
drove over to Mansfield Town to
meet Ian Greaves and see what
he had to offer. When I arrived, I
was taken to the boardroom – and
there was Ian. He was making
a cup of tea for himself, and he
asked me if I would like one – to
which I replied, ‘Yes please’.
He then proceeded to take the
tea bag out of his own cup and
squeeze it into mine! That was my
cup of tea, and I thought ‘Yes, I’m
going to come here!’.
The culture at Mansfield was such
a contrast compared with where
I’d been previously, at Sheffield
United. I went from having my
kit ironed and hung up ready in
the changing room, to having an
apprentice, with a ball bag (with
the kit in it), walk into the changing
room and tip the bag up onto the
treatment table. It was a free for
all where everyone would jump
up and get some kit. I remember
my first training session when this
happened – I was left with a red
sock and a green sock!
This typified how it was at the club,
but it was a great mentality – I really
enjoyed my time at Mansfield, and
the camaraderie we had!
From one day to the next we didn’t
know what we’d be doing, or where
we’d be training. At the time the
training pitch at Field Mill wasn’t
the best, so we’d end up turning up
at different locations that Ian had
spotted - somewhere, anywhere, he
considered ‘decent’ enough for us
to train!
I remember when we played at
Wembley. Just memories of Ian
giving us a few beers the night
before whilst we sat and listened
to a team talk, then the morning of
the match and Ian was deliberating
whether to have a side parting in his
hair or blow dry it! In fact, we had
arrived a few days before the day of
the final and arranged somewhere
to do some light training. However,
the pitch was not up to it, and Ian
didn’t want to risk anyone getting
injured, so we basically had a few
days off instead. It was such a great
time to play for the club, I really
enjoyed being at Mansfield!
