GARDENING TIPS FOR DECEMBER
• If a long flowering period is desired, pansies should be placed in
their permanent beds not later than this month. Fertilize monthly
with manure, super-phosphate or a liquid high-phosphate product.
Keep flowers picked for more bloom.
• Take tulips out of cold storage and plant late this month.
• Fertilize established trees, spring-blooming shrubs, spurias and
sweet peas (after they are a foot tall) with a fertilizer such as 13-13-
13; Louisiana iris with cotton seed meal and manure.
• Azaleas and camellias may be moved now. Keep moist to lesson
cold weather damage. May acidify again.
• Last month to plant early blossoming spring bulbs, speciosum
and other varieties of lilies. Mulch.
• Water plants well before a freeze; dry roots are easily damaged.
• Don’t forget to provide food and fresh water for birds. More birds
die from lack of water than lack of food.
KEEPING SAFE DURING THE HOLIDAYS
Just a few tips to keep
your holiday season
free from accidents
and injuries:
Christmas Trees - Purchase
green, moist
Christmas trees, never
old or brittle. Check
the needles. Try to find
a tree with needles
that bend instead of break. After purchasing a live tree, be sure to
cut the bottom of the tree to expose new wood that will be able
to soak up water. Always keep live trees watered. Keep trees (and
any other combustibles) away from ignition sources. Ensure that
artificial trees are fire resistant and UL (Underwriters Laboratory)
or FM (Factory Mutual) listed. Make sure the base is steady so the
tree won’t tip over easily.
Christmas Lights and Extension Cords - Only use UL or FM approved
extension cords. Make sure the extension cord is large
enough to carry the intended load. (The thicker the cord, the greater
the load it should be able to carry without overheating.) Inspect the
cord for damages. Do not overload outlets! Use surge protectors
if multiple outlets are needed. Immediately replace any broken
bulbs that have exposed filaments. Never use electric lights on old
metal artificial trees. Don’t run cords through doorways or under
rugs. The insulation on the cords can become damaged if the door
closes on the cord, or if people step on it under the rug, causing a
potential fire and/or shock hazard. Match plugs with outlets.
Toys and Ornaments - Purchase appropriate toys for the appropriate
age. Some toys designed for older children might be dangerous
for younger children. Toys with sharp points, sharp edges, strings,
cords or parts small enough to be swallowed should not be given to
small children. Place older ornaments and decorations that might be
painted with lead paint out of the reach of small children and pets.
Parties - Never drink and drive. Provide non-alcoholic drinks for
designated drivers and other guests.
Grayson Lakes | December 2021 5
Now is the time to begin your plan to have a peaceful holiday season
this year. You can’t change the fact that children and parents will have
spells of anxiety, fatigue, irritability, depression, conflict, worry, nagging
and overindulgence during the holiday weeks. But you can do a lot
to minimize them and you can begin today. Here are just a few ideas:
Buy an inexpensive, small notebook - not too small but you want to
be able to keep it with you conveniently. This is your holiday planning
book. Record notes to yourself, things to do, gift ideas and final lists,
Christmas card lists, decorating ideas, recipes, grocery shopping lists,
party planning lists, store phone numbers, babysitters’ phone numbers.
Any information that will help you get your holiday chores done should
be in that book so that you can refer to it any time you have a chance
(while waiting to pick up your child, in the doctor’s waiting room, on
your coffee break, in your bed at night).
Strategize with your spouse. Discuss whzat makes you happy during
the holidays and really listen to what your spouse says makes him/her
happy during the holidays. Prioritize your families’ Holiday activities
based on this discussion. If you both love
going to Holiday parties, then by all means
go! If both of you dislike those parties but
have always gone because you felt you had
to, then don’t be afraid to turn down some
invitations. Instead, you could have a dress
up evening for your family to go out to dinner
at a really special restaurant then go to a play
or musical performance. You won’t feel guilty
about refusing an adult party invitation if you
have plans for a special evening out with your
entire family. Everyone dress in their nicest
clothes. It’s your only hope for having your
children on their best behavior so that you
can really enjoy the evening.
Get a nice calendar to schedule Holiday
commitments and events you would like to
attend if you can. Involve the whole family in
planning these activities based on the oneto-one
decisions you and your spouse made
previously.
PARENTS’ PLAN FOR STRESS-FREE HOLIDAYS
Shop online or from catalogs. You will find the most unique gifts this
way and you can also get some deals this time of year that take off the
shipping charge or give you bonus merchandise. It really is much less
stressful to shop from your living room than to exhaust yourself at the
mall during the Christmas season. Do your mall shopping early, to get
a relaxed view of all the new merchandise. I like to go to the mall right
before rush hour on weekdays. Very few people are shopping and you
get such a warm, fuzzy feeling knowing that you are not out there in
all that rush-hour traffic.
Schedule some activities to nourish your spirit. Church services,
musical performances and plays are a few that come to mind that
will leave you feeling refreshed and rested rather than frazzled and
exhausted. Your children might rather go to the latest blockbuster at
the mall than to an afternoon choral concert but you know that the
concert will nourish their spirit and help them relax much more than
the movie will.
CHRISTMAS PROJECTS TO DO WITH
REINDEER ORNAMENTS
Make reindeer ornaments or fridge art by tracing your child’s
hands on to two pieces of tan felt (antlers).
• Then trace their foot on to a piece of dark brown felt (reindeer
face).
• Top with joggle eyes and a red pompom nose…instant reindeer!
• Thread at top for ornament or glue magnet on back.
WINTERLAND HOUSE
• A simple shoe box can be turned into a winter wonderland for
children.
• Cut a rectangle shape in the lid of the shoe box.
• On inside of lid, tape a piece of white tissue paper (this allows
light to filter through).
• On side of shoe box cut another rectangle shape (this allows
you to peer through box).
• On inside of box, glue white or navy blue construction paper
to the sides of the box.
• Glue fiber fill to the bottom of box.
• Streak glue on fiberfill and shake sparkles on it. This is the snow.
• Cut out old Christmas cards and position pictures like a winter
scene in the shoe box.
• Wrap the outside of the box with pretty Christmas paper.
• Viola! Instant winterland viewmaster!
6
CHRISTMAS CARD GAME BOOK - MAKE A SCRAPBOOK OF OLD
CHRISTMAS CARDS INTO A GAME.
• Glue them onto construction paper and take a paper punch and
put three rings or tie heavy yarn.
• Simply find cards that resemble the title of a Christmas song or theme.
EXAMPLE: Baby Jesus In a Manger would be “Away in the Manager.”
A Snowman on a card would be “Frosty the Snowman.” This is a
great way for kids to remember songs!
PRETZEL WREATH
• Cut 5-inch squares from green poster board.
• Cut a 1/2-inch circle from center to make a 3/4-inch circular base.
• Arrange 6 miniature pretzels on base. Mark the center of each large
pretzel loop with a pencil. Remove pretzels and with a hole punch
make holes at the marks.
• Place 6 pretzels over holes and glue them to the base; turn base
over and glue 6 more pretzels, matching them to pretzels on opposite
side. Let dry overnight.
• Spray both sides with varnish and let dry.
• Weave thin ribbon through the holes and tie a bow at the top to
make the wreath. (Note: An adult or an older child may use a hotglue
gun to complete the project in about an hour.)
CINNAMON ORNAMENTS
• Combine 3/4 cup applesauce and a (3.88-ounce) jar ground cinnamon,
stirring well.
• Turn out onto work surface. Roll to 1/4-inch thickness; cut with
3- to 4-inch cookie cutters and cut holes for hanging with a plastic
drinking straw.
• Transfer to wire racks; let stand, turning occasionally, 4 to 5 days
or until dry. Or place on lightly greased baking sheets and bake at
225° for 1 1/2 hours or until dry.
• Insert thin ribbons through holes to hang. Yield: 1 dozen.
STARLIGHT MINT WREATH
• Cut out a cardboard donut.
• Insert a brass fastener and attach a raffia loop (for hanging).
• Or purchase a small wooden embroidery hoop. Glue on starlight
mints and add a bright red bow.
SNOWMAN CAN
• Take an empty coffee can (with lid on) and cover with white construction
paper or white fabric.
• Glue on black buttons for eyes and mouth and orange felt for nose.
• Top with a small child’s knit cap or old fabric remnants and tie
off the top.
• Add blush to cheeks.
APPLE AND ORANGE GARLANDS
Apple Slices: Slice 1/4 inch thick and soak for 30 minutes in a brine
made from the juice of 2 lemons, 2 tablespoons of salt and 1 cup of
water. Spread on parchment paper on a cookie sheet and bake 2-3
hours in a 200-250 degree oven. Easier method: Leave slices in an oven
with a pilot light for 2 days or until they lose all moisture. Strung into
garlands, the apple slices will air-dry completely and “last forever.”
ORANGE SLICES
Cut oranges into thin slices, lay on paper towels and microwave
on high for 1 minute. Flip and repeat several times, then follow
directions for baking apple slices in oven. You can string your slices
on heavy nylon thread (like fishing wire) or heavy dental floss. You
can also add bay leaves, cinnamon sticks (cut short) and baby’s
breath. Make them as long as you want. Add raffia bows to the ends.
graham cracker pie crust
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
DIRECTIONS:
In a small bowl, combine gelatin and cold water; set aside to soften. Combine
milk and 1/2 cup sugar in a small glass bowl. Microwave for 3 minutes or until
milk begins to boil.
In a steady stream, pour hot milk into beaten eggs, whisking constantly. Cook custard in the microwave, whisking
after each minute, until it thickens slightly, about 2 minutes. Stir in softened gelatin and mix until melted. Stir in rum.
Let filling cool to room temperature. (If you refrigerate it, stir occasionally to prevent gelatin from setting too soon.)
In a medium bowl, whip cream until soft peaks form; beat in 1/4 cup sugar. Set aside 1/2 cup of whipped cream
for garnish; keep refrigerated. Fold remaining whipped cream into eggnog mixture. Pour filling into pie crust and
refrigerate 4 hours or overnight. Garnish with reserved whipped cream and a dusting of nutmeg.
